The selection committee is looking for students who embody James A. Campbell's founding mission — educating leaders prepared for purposeful lives. Standout performance in the on-campus interview often distinguishes the final five.

Strategic Note: Students who clear a hard numerical gate and then perform in person. The 3.65 GPA plus 28 ACT requirement screens the field down sharply, and this is one of the few Carson-Newman awards where being test optional actively costs you, since there is no way in without a score. From there it comes down to an essay and face-to-face interviews with faculty. Kids who are comfortable talking with adults about ideas do well. Quiet high achievers sometimes do not, which is worth practicing for.

Strategic Note: Memphis-area students with strong test scores and an ordinary transcript. That combination is the whole story here — the 2.5 GPA floor paired with a 25 ACT is an unusual pairing that deliberately opens the door to bright kids whose grades were dragged down by circumstance rather than ability. Ten awards is a real number, not a token one. If your student is from Shelby County, tests well, and is headed into STEM, business, or education, this is the single highest-value application they can file, and the essay about fairness and compassion is where it gets decided.

If the household qualifies for Pell and the student is starting college for the first time, tuition is covered, full stop. The two things that trip families up are the FAFSA itself, which has to be filed on time every single year, and the word tuition. This does not touch housing, meals, books or fees, and room and board at Delta State runs roughly $8,700 a year, so budget for that.

Full tuition is roughly 24,600 dollars, but Fisk's total direct bill runs about 41,000 once you add mandatory fees, a room, and a meal plan. That leaves somewhere near 16,400 dollars a year still to cover, so this is a very good award that still needs a plan behind it.

Strategic Note: Top of the admitted class — students clearing the 3.5/1320/28 minimums with real headroom, showing academic momentum, and often carrying National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic Scholar recognition. Early applicants (well before the October 15 gate) get the strongest look.

Successful candidates typically carry at least a 3.75 unweighted GPA, have pushed themselves with honors or AP coursework, and show up to the interview ready to demonstrate real leadership, genuine service, and the intellectual curiosity GWU is looking for. The on-site essay matters too — this isn't just an academic competition, it's a full picture of who your student is.

Strategic Note: HPU publishes the actual averages for this cohort: 4.0 unweighted GPA, 1550 SAT, 34 ACT, and top 5% class rank. This is a genuinely elite group — the strongest of the strong. If your student is in this territory, the November 15 deadline and interview weekend are absolutely worth pursuing.

Strategic Note: This is the tier most JSU-bound families actually land in, and it is also where the biggest trap sits. Heritage tops out at a 24 ACT. One more point, a 25, moves your student to Provost, which adds a room and a meal plan on top of tuition. If they are sitting at 23 or 24, a single retake is worth more than almost anything else they could do this year. And read the renewal fine print carefully, because three years of coverage on a four-year degree is a real gap that nobody mentions on a campus tour.

Strategic Note: Outstanding Alabama Community College System transfer students with at least 45 transferable credits, a minimum 3.5 transfer GPA, and strong faculty-supported leadership records.

Seventy thousand in parent income is the line, and you have to clear Pell eligibility on the FAFSA, which for most families means well under that. If you qualify, you qualify. Nobody is judging your essay. The part families underestimate is the renewal GPA. A 3.0 checked every single semester is stricter than it sounds for a first-year student adjusting to college. You get one do-over and that is it.

Strategic Note: Ten students out of a very large qualified pool, so meeting the 30 ACT and 3.5 GPA bar just gets you into the room. What separates winners is the video and interview, and Lipscomb is explicit that it is looking for fit with its Christian mission, so church and service involvement carries genuine weight here. If your resume is strong academically but thin on leadership and service, this is a long shot worth attempting but not worth counting on.

Leadership is named explicitly in the criteria, which means the students who win tend to have run something rather than just joined it. Apply if you clear the numbers, because the Fellowship pool is drawn from the same applications and twenty more students get 30,000 dollars a year out of it.

Strategic Note: Twenty students a year out of a very large applicant pool, so treat the 30 ACT and 3.5 GPA as the ticket to the room rather than a likely win. The Honors College is reading for someone who will actually finish an Honors thesis and use the cohort, which means essays and evidence of sustained commitment carry real weight next to the numbers. The strategic point for any family looking at MTSU with a 30-plus student: the Buchanan shares a December 1 deadline with the automatic scholarships you are already filing for. Applying costs one more form, and the downside is that you fall back on the guaranteed award you would have gotten anyway.

Strategic Note: Two students out of an entering class, so treat this as a lottery ticket you happen to be qualified for, not a plan. The 3.5 and 29 ACT gate is not especially high for a school Milligan's size, which means the pool clearing the bar is much larger than two. What separates winners is the interview and the resume, not the transcript. Faculty are picking students they want in seminar rooms, so demonstrated leadership, service, and the ability to hold a real conversation about ideas matter more than another tenth of a GPA point. Here is the practical part. Everyone who applies for Jeanes and does not win is automatically considered for a Hopwood award instead, so the downside of applying is a few hours of work and the upside is real money either way. Apply.

Strategic Note: Sixteen students a year, and the 3.5 unweighted plus 28 ACT floor is where most families get their hopes up wrongly - that is the door, not the win. Millsaps admits students with a 21 to 28 ACT middle range, so a 28 puts you at the very top of their applicant pool and the actual scholars will mostly sit above it. What separates finalists is the essay, the two letters and how you carry yourself at Scholars Weekend in February. If your student is at 28 exactly and has a genuinely strong recommendation from someone outside the classroom, this is worth the effort - the optional portfolio is where an unusual kid can stand out. If your student is at 3.5 flat with a 28 flat and a thin activity record, plan on the regular merit award and treat Premier as the lottery ticket.

Strategic Note: A very small cohort. Past Honors classes have been reported at roughly fifteen students. A 29 ACT gets you the invitation to apply, but the two essays and the MMI interview do the actual sorting, and MMI is an unusual format borrowed from medical school admissions where you rotate through short scenario stations rather than sitting for one long conversation. Almost no high school senior has done that before. Look up how MMI works and practice it, because the students who walk in cold get visibly rattled. Anyone with a 29-plus who is serious about MC should apply for both this and Select Scholars, since MC explicitly encourages doing both.

Strategic Note: Roughly the top one percent of PSAT takers in your state. If your child took the PSAT junior year and scored high enough for Semi-Finalist, this is essentially guaranteed money once they are admitted. If they did not, there is no application to submit and no way to earn this one after the fact.

Strategic Note: The runner-up outcome from the same application that awards the Centennial, so there is no separate strategy — you apply once and the panel decides which you get. The practical difference is housing and food, which at The W is real money. Students who land here interviewed well and cleared the academic bar but did not quite top the field. Since the entry requirements are identical to the Centennial, anyone eligible for one should apply knowing this is the likelier result.

Strategic Note: Community college students who planned the transfer from the start. The AA completion requirement is the real filter here — a lot of students bank 50 or 60 credits and move on without the degree in hand, and those students get nothing from this award no matter how good their grades were. The 3.25 is demanding but reachable for anyone taking community college seriously. If your student is at a Mississippi community college right now and thinking about MVSU, the single most valuable piece of advice is to sit down with an advisor and make sure every remaining course counts toward finishing the AA, not just toward credit hours.

Strategic Note: Kentucky pipeline-program students who already completed GSP, GSA, GSE, or CHA and also clear Murray State's academic line: 3.5 GPA plus 25 ACT or 1200 SAT. This is powerful tuition money, but it is not broad merit and it does not cover housing or meals by itself. GSA arts students may also have a separate arts-review path tied to portfolio or audition strength.

Strategic Note: Eligible veterans, Guard or Reserve members, active-duty students, and qualifying dependents benefit when they complete the VA paperwork correctly and stay on top of certification each term. This is not general merit aid, but for military-connected families it can be one of the most important funding sources.

Strategic Note: Undergraduate and graduate cybersecurity students with strong academics and commitment to public-sector cybersecurity careers who can meet federal employment and security clearance requirements.

Strategic Note: Lowest-income NC residents who meet FAFSA and residency

Strategic Note: This is for Kentucky students who completed the Governor's Scholars Program and follow NKU's scholarship process. The key gatekeeper is not just GPA; it is having the GSP credential, submitting documentation, and meeting NKU's scholarship application requirements on time.

Strategic Note: Exactly one traditional CPCC transfer student per year — the very top performer in the applicant pool in terms of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership. This is a prestige, ultra-competitive award. If you're a CPCC student with a near-perfect GPA and strong leadership history, this is worth pursuing with a fully polished application.

Strategic Note: A very small number of qualified dependents nationwide whose home institutions certify them for Tuition Exchange or ACS Exchange and who are then selected by Sewanee through a competitive process.

Strategic Note: Actively drilling Louisiana National Guard members who meet STEP service and academic requirements, remain in good standing with the Guard, and submit paperwork on time each term.

Strategic Note: A genuinely small group. National Merit Finalist status runs to roughly the top one percent of PSAT takers nationally, and there is no way to backfill it if you missed the PSAT junior year. The honest read is that this award is not something you can decide to pursue as a senior. Either the PSAT already went your way or it did not. If it did, Southern is one of the schools where that credential converts directly into tuition rather than a token $2,500 stipend, and it is worth comparing against what the flagship publics in your state will offer.

Strategic Note: High-achieving freshmen with at least a 3.6 GPA and ACT of 28 or higher (or SAT around 1320+) and documented leadership or service.

Strategic Note: Transfer students with strong academic records who can write authentically about pushing through real obstacles. The single winner is chosen from a group of five finalists, so even 'runner-up' outcomes come with meaningful money.

Strategic Note: Metro Nashville Public Schools graduates who enroll full-time at TSU, hold at least a HOPE GPA of 3.0 or ACT 21 / SAT 1060, and are HOPE Scholarship–eligible through TSAC. If you graduated from an MNPS school and are heading to TSU, this is one of the most powerful local-to-local scholarship combinations in Tennessee — full tuition, no essay, automatic consideration.

Strategic Note: Valedictorians and salutatorians, full stop. If that is your student, this is close to the best value on the list, because the competition pool is tiny compared with the Presidential. The mistake families make is assuming the honor is automatically on file somewhere. It is not. Tougaloo has to see the rank on a transcript and see an application, and if the high school does not print rank on transcripts you will need a letter from the counselor confirming it. Sort that out early.

Strategic Note: Be clear-eyed here - Trevecca named three McClurkan recipients for 2026. Three. Meeting the 28 ACT and 3.5 GPA bar only earns you the right to apply, and plenty of qualified students never get the McClurkan Day invitation. What separates finalists is not the transcript, it is a documented track record of service and leadership that a committee can see and ask about across an interview table. Apply if you clear the numbers, because the upside is full tuition and the application costs you an afternoon. Just do not build your college budget around winning it. Your realistic number at Trevecca is the Strickland or Dunning award you already qualify for automatically.

Strategic Note: Strong students sitting just under the Scholars PLUS cutoff — a 30 to 32 ACT with a 3.7 GPA. The gap between a 32 and a 33 on the ACT is worth a meal plan and the rest of your housing here, so if your student is at a 32 and has a test date left, one more sitting is the single highest-value thing they can do.

Strategic Note: High-achieving graduates from selected New Orleans high schools who are nominated and selected through the Mayoral Scholars partnership. This is a local-access scholarship, not a national merit competition.

Strategic Note: Faculty and staff kids, full stop. The catch is that seats are limited and Union explicitly reserves the right to pick among applicants when demand exceeds space. That makes the October 1 deadline unusually important — this is one of the few Union awards where applying late genuinely costs you a slot rather than just paperwork. If your parent works in higher education and you did not know this existed, that is the most expensive thing on this page you have not yet acted on.

Strategic Note: Students with more than strong grades: academic honors, leadership, service, work, activities, or standout achievement in an intended field. This is the kind of award where a 4.0 alone is not the story. UA is looking for evidence that the student will add something distinctive to campus.

The 3.5 GPA and 31 ACT or 1390 SAT make a student eligible to be considered; they do not make this automatic. Essays, rigor, activities, leadership, and interview performance can all matter.

Strategic Note: This is a Kentucky-only leadership scholarship for students who already have a serious civic, service, or public-leadership profile. The winners are usually students who can connect academics, leadership, and public service into a clear story during the application and interview process.

Strategic Note: First-year applicants with near-perfect academic records, a very rigorous course load, and applications that stand out in the Premier review. Your student needs to be among the highest achievers in UM’s admitted class to be competitive here.

Strategic Note: The gate here is not Ole Miss. It is the PSAT taken in October of junior year, before most families are thinking about scholarships at all. If you cleared your state's Semifinalist cutoff, this is close to automatic and it covers full tuition, which for a non-resident is the largest award on the board. If you did not, there is no essay and no appeal that gets you in. Everything was decided by a test most students treat as practice.

Strategic Note: This is one of the strongest Honors scholarship opportunities at UNCG. It is most realistic for top Global Honors admits with excellent academics, leadership, community engagement, and a strong fit with the Honors program.

Strategic Note: This is a very competitive Honors College scholarship. It is most realistic for top incoming Honors students with strong grades, high test scores, leadership, curiosity, strong essays, and a good interview/application package.

Strategic Note: One top in-state student from each of Tennessee's 95 counties with at least a 3.2 UT core weighted GPA and strong community engagement — think student body president, Eagle Scout, lead volunteer, or someone with a genuine and distinctive story of service. Applying early (November 1) positions your student for the fullest consideration.

Strategic Note: Strong students who move fast. A 3.7 with a 30 ACT is a real bar at a school this size, but the tighter filter is timing. With one award per academic program, a qualified student who deposits in April beats a stronger student who waits until July. If your student is at or above the cutoff, treat the deposit date as the actual competition — not the grades.

Strategic Note: Top Virginia achievers, often first-gen/URM

Strategic Note: Top cybersecurity-related majors committed to federal or government cybersecurity service after graduation.

Strategic Note: Students who already have a service track record deep enough to write three distinct essays about, and who can survive an interview with the committee. The essay prompts favor someone who has built or run something - a program, a nonprofit, an initiative - over someone who has volunteered a lot of hours. If service is genuinely the center of your life, this is the Vanderbilt award where you have the most distinct profile. If you're adding service to look good, the interview will find that out.

Strategic Note: High academic-merit first-year applicants below the Presidential tier.

Strategic Note: A small number of Pamplin Leadership Award recipients — typically 3 to 4 students annually — who demonstrate sustained excellence in academics and leadership during their first year at Virginia Tech. This is an elite within an elite: you must first win the Pamplin Leadership Award just to be eligible to apply.

Strategic Note: Kentucky families with real financial need. The student needs to be Pell-eligible, CAP-eligible, in-state, full-time, and at or above a 3.0 unweighted GPA. This can make tuition disappear, but it does not make WKU free.

Strategic Note: Selection is competitive; top consideration to academic ability, first-generation and/or limited-income (Pell-eligible) students, and demonstrated interest in diverse perspectives. Preference for in-state; a handful of out-of-state awards.

Strategic Note: Fifteen students a year, and that number is the whole story. A 30 ACT only buys you the right to apply. What separates finalists is the essay and the video, and most applicants underinvest badly in the video because it feels unfamiliar. Treat it as the real interview. Carey publishes rubrics for both the essay and the video, which is unusually generous, so read them before you write a word. Realistically this is a reach even for a 32 or 33, because the pool is small and the committee is weighing fit and service alongside scores.

Strategic Note: Students whose parent is a benefits-eligible employee at a participating Tuition Exchange institution — and whose application lands in a year when Wofford has available import slots. The benefit is meaningful (tuition-level coverage) but requires early action on the home institution's end, since they control the certification process.
