Alabama A&M uses a number it calls the Composite Predictive Index, or CPI. It’s simple: take your student’s high school GPA and add their ACT composite. A 3.0 GPA plus an 18 ACT is a CPI of 21. You need an 18 for full admission (with at least a 2.25 GPA), and a 16 can still get conditional admission. Students without a test score can be admitted on a 2.25 GPA through AAMU’s testing waiver.
That same mix of GPA and test score decides the out-of-state discount too, so it’s worth knowing your student’s numbers early.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Alabama A&M (Read This First)
AAMU doesn’t publish a deadline for its two biggest awards. The Presidential (full ride) and Merit (full tuition) scholarships need their own application and a signed contract, and the only official word is that the application is “closed until Fall 2027.” No closing date appears anywhere on AAMU’s site. Check the financial aid page every few weeks and apply the day it opens.
February 1 is the date that matters. AAMU calls February 1 its priority date for the maximum aid package. Have the FAFSA filed and the admission file complete by then. Most AAMU awards are paid “while funding lasts,” so late files get less.
Out-of-state families: pay the $115 enrollment fee early. The Normalite discount doesn’t post until that fee is paid, and AAMU says it’s awarded pending availability of funds.
Test-optional for admission is not test-optional for money. The waiver gets your student in, but Heritage awards need a 17 ACT, and Presidential and Merit need real scores. The exception is the Academic Recognition Scholarship, built for students without a qualifying score.
Most awards replace each other. Presidential and Merit stand alone. The only academic pairing AAMU allows is Heritage Gold or Silver plus Normalite for out-of-state freshmen.
AAMU’s own pages disagree. We found three different Normalite amounts and two FAFSA priority dates. Use the earliest date and get dollar amounts confirmed in writing.

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Alabama A&M University? Heritage awards need a 17 ACT and Presidential/Merit need scores; the Academic Recognition Scholarship is the only no-test merit path.
What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 14-19; SAT: 810-1040.
Average net price? About $17,621/year after aid.
Does this school use waivers/reciprocity?
Yes. Institutional waivers are available.
💰 Cost of Attendance at Alabama A&M University: 2026–2027 Rates
Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.
📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Alabama A&M University has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly
$400 to $900 more than the in-state total below.$600 to $1,400 more than the out-of-state total below.
In-State: billed cost per year

Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees

$8,384
Total billed cost

Out-of-State: billed cost per year

Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$19,312
Housing & meals (typical)
$8,384
Total billed cost
$27,696
That is $8,760 more per year than Alabama residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.
Average federal net price: $17,621 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.
📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options
Alabama A&M is not part of a regional tuition exchange, and we could not confirm any undergraduate Academic Common Market programs here. The out-of-state discount comes from AAMU itself.
The Normalite Opportunity Scholarship goes to first-time freshmen from outside Alabama with a Composite Predictive Index of 20 or higher (high school GPA plus ACT composite). AAMU lists it at $8,610 a year on its main scholarship page and $8,700 on the award's own page, against a 2026-27 out-of-state premium of $8,760. It also stacks with Heritage Gold or Silver. Confirm the current amount at scholarships@aamu.edu before you build a budget around it.
Out-of-State? This Is the Part to Read Twice
For 2026-27, the gap between AAMU’s in-state and out-of-state tuition is $8,760 a year. AAMU’s Normalite Opportunity Scholarship, most recently posted at $4,395 a semester ($8,790 a year), covers essentially all of it for first-time freshmen from outside Alabama who meet its GPA and test score chart. Pair it with Heritage Gold and an out-of-state student with a 3.25 GPA and an 18 ACT is paying in-state tuition with $5,000 left over. Details are in the automatic scholarships section below.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Alabama A&M University
How much more does out-of-state cost at Alabama A&M?
About $8,760 more a year in tuition for 2026-27. Alabama residents pay $293 per credit hour and non-residents pay $585, but full-time students pay a flat semester rate instead of paying by the hour. Housing and meals cost the same for everyone.
Can out-of-state students pay in-state tuition at AAMU?
Effectively, yes, through the Normalite Opportunity Scholarship. AAMU’s Admissions office posted it at $8,790 a year in February 2026. Older AAMU pages list $8,610 and $8,700, so confirm the current figure in writing. We could not confirm any undergraduate Academic Common Market programs at AAMU, so don’t count on that route.
Does taking more classes cost more?
Not between 12 and 18 credit hours. AAMU charges one flat rate in that range, so a student taking 15 or 18 hours pays the same as one taking 12. That’s a quiet way to graduate on time without paying extra.
What does the housing number in the table include?
A traditional residence hall ($1,955 a semester) plus the full 21-meal plan ($2,240 a semester). Suite-style halls run $2,863 to $4,500 a semester and Normal Hills apartments run $2,760 to $5,099, so your real number depends on where your student lives.
What’s the $380 book charge on the bill?
That’s AAMU’s Follett Access program, which bundles course materials for 100- and 200-level classes at a flat $380 a semester for full-time students. You can opt out by the posted deadline (August 28 for Fall 2026) if buying or renting books yourself is cheaper.
Is the average net price really around $17,600?
That’s the federal average for students who received grant or scholarship aid. Students who stack Heritage and Normalite, or who qualify for Pell, often pay less. Families with no aid will pay closer to the full numbers in the table.
When should we file the FAFSA for AAMU?
By February 1. One AAMU page lists March 1, but the Freshman FAQ calls February 1 the priority date for the maximum aid package, and scholarship money runs out. The earlier date is the safe one.
Can financial aid cover the enrollment, housing and orientation fees?
No. The $115 enrollment and SOAR fee, the housing application fee and the housing deposit are out-of-pocket costs. Pay the enrollment fee quickly, since out-of-state scholarships don’t post until it clears.
Fall of senior year: Apply for admission and send official scores (ACT code 0002, SAT code 1003). Heritage and Academic Recognition offers come from the completed admission file.
Fall and winter: Watch for the Presidential and Merit application. AAMU doesn’t publish a closing date, so apply the day it opens.
February 1: AAMU’s priority date for the maximum aid package. File the FAFSA (school code 001002) and finish the admission file by now.
As soon as your student is admitted: Pay the $115 enrollment fee. Out-of-state students’ Normalite award posts only after it clears.
Parent rule of thumb: AAMU pays most of its awards while funding lasts. Early files get the full offer, and late files get whatever is left.
Automatic Merit Scholarships: Alabama A&M University
These awards come straight from your student’s admission file, with no separate application. AAMU doesn’t publish a hard deadline for them, but they’re paid while funding lasts, so treat February 1 as your real deadline. The Heritage tiers need at least a 17 on the ACT, and the Academic Recognition Scholarship covers students with a 3.0 GPA and no qualifying score. Out-of-state freshmen can also get the Normalite Opportunity Scholarship, which stacks with Heritage Gold or Silver.

Automatic Merit FAQs (Alabama A&M University)
Is there a deadline for AAMU’s automatic scholarships?
Not a published one. AAMU awards them from the admission file while funding lasts. Its Freshman FAQ calls February 1 the priority date for the maximum aid package, so have the FAFSA filed and the transcript and scores in by then.
Who qualifies for the Normalite out-of-state scholarship?
First-time freshmen from outside Alabama who hit one of these combinations: a 2.25 GPA with an 18 ACT (960 SAT), a 3.0 GPA with a 17 ACT (920 SAT), or a 4.0 GPA with a 16 ACT (880 SAT). AAMU’s Admissions office posted the award at $4,395 a semester in February 2026. It posts only after the $115 enrollment fee is paid, and funding is limited.
What test score does my student need for Heritage?
A 17 on the ACT for any Heritage tier. AAMU’s current scholarship page doesn’t publish an SAT equivalent for Heritage, so if your student only has an SAT score, email scholarships@aamu.edu and ask how it converts.
Does AAMU superscore?
AAMU doesn’t publish a superscore policy for scholarships. Send your student’s best single sitting and ask the scholarship office whether they’ll consider section scores from other dates.
What if my student doesn’t have a test score at all?
Look at the Academic Recognition Scholarship. With a 3.0 GPA and no qualifying score, it pays $4,000 a year in-state and $5,000 out-of-state. That’s more than Heritage Silver, so a 3.0 student with a borderline score should ask which award they’d get before sending it.
Can my student get more than one AAMU scholarship?
Only one combination works: out-of-state freshmen can pair Normalite with Heritage Gold or Silver. Everything else is one academic award per student. Band, choir, athletic, 1890, TMCF, UNCF and private donor money can stack on top of any of them.
What does an out-of-state student actually get?
Take a student from Georgia with a 3.3 GPA and an 18 ACT. They clear the Normalite chart ($8,790) and qualify for Heritage Gold ($5,000), for about $13,790 a year. That wipes out the out-of-state premium with $5,000 to spare.
How does my student keep the award?
Keep a 2.80 cumulative GPA (2.50 for Heritage Bronze) and finish 30 credit hours across each fall and spring. Dropping a class in the spring is the most common way students lose a renewable award without realizing it.
AAMU’s two biggest awards look automatic on paper: the cutoffs are published and there’s no essay contest. But both the Presidential and Merit scholarships require their own application, and the offer comes with a contract your student has to sign and send back. The bigger problem is that AAMU doesn’t publish a deadline. Its aid page only says the application is “closed until Fall 2027.” Your job this year is to catch the window the moment it opens.

Out-of-state families should run the numbers before celebrating a Merit offer. Merit covers out-of-state tuition, which is worth more than Heritage plus Normalite, but it doesn’t stack with them. ❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs
When is the Presidential and Merit deadline?
AAMU doesn’t publish one. We checked its scholarship pages, aid pages, FAQs and news posts, and none lists a closing date. The aid homepage only says the application is closed until Fall 2027. Check that page every few weeks this fall and winter, submit the day it opens, and email scholarships@aamu.edu to ask how long it will stay open.
Is the Presidential Scholarship really a full ride?
Yes. It covers tuition, room, board and fees, plus a $1,000 book allowance each semester, for up to eight semesters. Your student keeps it with a 3.50 GPA and 30 credit hours each year.
My student hit the numbers but didn’t get an offer. Now what?
First check that the scholarship contract was signed and returned, because AAMU won’t post the award without it. Then use AAMU’s Scholarship Appeal, Deferment, or Upgrade form, which the scholarship committee reviews case by case.
Can my student raise their test score after admission and move up?
Possibly. The same appeal and upgrade form is how AAMU reviews a new score. Approval isn’t guaranteed and depends on funding, so get the higher score in as early as you can.
Can Presidential or Merit be combined with band or athletic money?
Yes. AAMU’s stacking grid says band, choir and athletic awards stack with both. They just can’t be combined with another AAMU academic scholarship.
AAMU’s academic awards mostly replace each other, but its stacking grid says a whole category of money sits on top of everything. Unlike AAMU’s own awards, most of these have real deadlines, so put them on the calendar now.
October through March: If your student is considering the military, the national Army ROTC scholarship has three rounds (October 12, January 18 and March 8 for this cycle).
Winter: Agriculture, food science, forestry and environmental students should apply for the USDA 1890 National Scholars Program (last deadline March 8).
February and March: Alabama STEM students in the top 10% should watch for the STEM Star Scholarship window.
Spring: Schedule a band or choir audition, check the Thurgood Marshall College Fund list, and apply to your local AAMU alumni chapter (Houston’s deadline was April 1).
Parent translation: the academic award sets your floor. These awards are how you lower the bill below that floor.
💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships
None of these are automatic, and most need an audition, an essay or a separate application. The payoff is that they stack with AAMU’s academic awards, which almost nothing else at AAMU does.

Money the college does not control. Federal programs, city promise funds, foundations, and employers. The college may help you apply, but someone else writes the check, and these almost always stack with the college's own awards.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
Do these really stack with Presidential or Merit?
AAMU’s stacking grid says band, choir, athletic, 1890, First Lady, TMCF, UNCF and private donor awards all stack with every academic scholarship. The only ceiling is your student’s total cost of attendance.
What is the USDA 1890 National Scholars Program?
It’s a federal scholarship open only at the 19 historically Black 1890 land-grant universities, and AAMU is one of them. It covers full tuition, fees, books, room and board, plus a summer internship with USDA. Students need to be U.S. citizens majoring in agriculture, food, natural resources or a related field. The last deadline was March 8, 2026.
How does Army ROTC money work at AAMU?
High school seniors apply for the national scholarship through goarmy.com. This cycle’s rounds close October 12, 2026, January 18, 2027 and March 8, 2027. The Army currently lists full tuition and fees, $1,200 a year for books and $420 a month during the school year. Students who join ROTC on campus can still compete for shorter awards.
How do band scholarships work at AAMU?
Your student schedules an audition for the Marching Maroon & White through the band website. AAMU doesn’t post audition deadlines or award amounts, so sign up early. Band offers come with a contract that has to be returned within three weeks.
What’s the STEM Star Scholarship?
A $5,000 award ($2,500 a semester) from AAMU and the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville. It’s for Alabama freshmen in the top 10% of their class with financial need who plan a STEM degree in the College of Engineering, Technology, and Physical Sciences. The last window ran February 15 to March 31, 2025, and we couldn’t confirm a 2026-27 cycle.
What’s the Noyce program, and is it right for my student?
It pays up to $18,000 a year for the junior and senior years to biology, chemistry, physics and math majors who become high school teachers. Deadlines are March 25 for fall and October 25 for spring. The catch: each funded year requires two years of teaching in a high-need school district, or the money turns into a loan.
Are there awards for students from my city?
Often, yes. AAMU’s National Alumni Association and local chapters, including Houston, the Washington DC metro area and Huntsville-Madison County, give scholarships to incoming and current students. The Houston chapter’s award was $1,000 for 2026-27, with an April 1 deadline.
AAMU runs an Honors Program, not a separate honors college. It’s been around since 1993 and brings in a sizable class each fall. Admission isn’t automatic: your student applies separately and, if they meet the requirements, sits for an interview.
GPA: 3.30 cumulative, and AAMU means it. A 3.28 doesn’t round up.
Test score (incoming freshmen): ACT 23 or higher, or SAT 1130 or higher
Application: Online form, a 300 to 500 word essay, a résumé and a transcript, then an interview
Transfers: Must apply before starting at AAMU and have fewer than 48 college credits
Honors Scholarships
This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.
We couldn’t find any scholarship tied to Honors Program membership itself. Honors students are paid through the same academic scholarships as everyone else. Notice the overlap: the Honors test bar (23 ACT, 1130 SAT) is the same as the Merit Scholarship’s, so a student who qualifies for one usually qualifies for both.
Deadline Note: Applications for 2026-27 are closed. AAMU says 2027-28 deadlines will be posted later this fall, so check the Honors application page before winter break.
What Honors Students Get
Priority registration and priority housing in selected residence halls
A dedicated Honors advisor and an honors curriculum
Access to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund Leadership Institute and the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge team
Leadership retreats, research opportunities and help pursuing national fellowships
Honors Program FAQs (Alabama A&M University)
Is Honors admission automatic with good grades?
No. Your student submits a separate application with an essay and résumé, and eligible applicants are interviewed.
Does the Honors Program come with money?
Not directly. Honors students rely on AAMU’s academic scholarships. Because the Honors bar matches the Merit Scholarship’s, a student who gets into Honors should make sure they also applied for Merit.
Can current AAMU students join?
Yes, but only during their first year, and they need three years left before graduation.
Can out-of-state students apply?
Yes. Residency doesn’t affect Honors eligibility.
Is the 3.30 GPA weighted or unweighted?
AAMU doesn’t say. Ask the Honors office at 256-372-5385 before assuming a weighted GPA will count.
Alabama A&M sits on “The Hill” in Huntsville, one of the country’s biggest aerospace and defense towns. It’s a historically Black land-grant university founded in 1875, and that land-grant mission still shapes what it does best: agriculture and the sciences on one side, engineering and business on the other. In 2025 it earned Carnegie’s new Research College and University designation, a first for the school.
Nationally Recognized Program: Business. AAMU’s business programs earned AACSB accreditation in 2019 and had it reaffirmed in 2025, a stamp held by a small share of business schools worldwide. For families comparing HBCUs, that’s a real quality signal at a public school price.
Engineering and Computer Science: AAMU lists ABET accreditation for civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, both engineering technology programs and computer science. Being in Huntsville puts students near NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal and a long list of defense contractors.
Agriculture, Food Science and Forestry: This is the land-grant core. Food science carries IFT accreditation, and students in these fields can compete for the USDA 1890 National Scholars Program.
Teacher Education: A longtime strength, with programs aimed at Alabama’s STEM teacher shortage and at recruiting more Black male teachers.
Popular majors: Biology, business administration, social work, urban and regional planning, and computer science draw large numbers of students.

These are AAMU’s own pages for admissions, scholarships, costs and the Honors Program. When dates or dollar amounts here differ from what you see on AAMU’s site, go with AAMU and confirm in writing.
Big picture? Alabama A&M is one of the friendliest schools in the South for the student with good-not-perfect grades. A B average and a 17 on the ACT earns real, renewable money here. If you live outside Alabama, the Normalite award nearly erases the out-of-state premium, and it’s one of the few places that does that for ordinary stats.
The catch is paperwork. AAMU’s full ride and full-tuition awards need their own application and a signed contract, and the school’s own pages don’t always agree on dates. So get the test score in early, watch the Presidential and Merit window like a hawk, file the FAFSA by February 1, and then go after the money that stacks: band, the USDA 1890 scholarship, TMCF and your local alumni chapter. Do those things and a Huntsville degree in engineering, business or the sciences can come in well under sticker price.
