Tuskegee is a private university in rural east Alabama, about 40 minutes from Auburn and an hour from Montgomery. It is one of the best-known HBCUs in the country, it sits on a campus that is also a National Historic Site, and it is the only HBCU that offers ROTC programs for every military branch, including the Space Force. Enrollment runs around 2,650 undergraduates, so this is a small campus with a very large name.

Because Tuskegee is private, there is no in-state or out-of-state price. Every family sees the same tuition number. What separates one family’s bill from another is almost entirely which rung of the merit grid the student lands on, and whether they submitted a test score.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Tuskegee (Read This First)

  • Test-optional gets you admitted. It does not get you money. Tuskegee states plainly that students admitted through the test-optional pathway are not eligible for the Presidential or Merit scholarships. The financial aid office goes further and says test-optional applicants from outside Alabama may not apply for merit-based scholarships at all. If your student wants merit here, send scores.
  • Your ACT score must include the Science section. Tuskegee requires the Science section on the new 2025 ACT reporting (Writing is optional). A student who took the shortened version of the ACT may have a score Tuskegee cannot use. Check this before test day, not after.
  • No superscoring for money. Superscored ACT and SAT results are not permitted for scholarship awards. One sitting has to carry the whole thing.
  • Tuskegee contradicts itself on the application, so do both. The scholarship page says there is no separate scholarship application, then says in bold that a priority scholarship application opens December 1 and closes January 1 and that all students must apply in that window. Assume the window is real and watch your email.
  • Two different deadlines, one month apart. Presidential consideration closes December 1. Merit consideration closes January 15. Miss December 1 and the top award is simply gone, no matter how strong the file is.
  • You get one grid award, not several. Tuskegee awards a single tier from the freshman chart. There is no stacking your way up from Achievement to Merit.
  • A $500 enrollment fee can cancel your scholarship. New students must pay a non-refundable enrollment fee by the priority date printed on the scholarship letter, and the award is subject to cancellation if it is late. Scholarships do not cover that fee.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Tuskegee University 2026-2027

📅 2027–2028 Planning Note: The costs below reflect the most recently published figures (2026–2027). Universities typically finalize the next year’s rates in the spring, and we’ll update this page once official 2027–2028 numbers are released.

Planning tip: At large public universities, tuition, fees, and housing usually increase modestly each year (often in the 2–5% range). For early budgeting, families may want to plan for roughly $1,000–$1,500 more in-state or $2,000–$3,000 more out-of-state in total direct costs once new rates are published.

Category (2026–2027) In-State Out-of-State
Tuition & Mandatory Fees (2 semesters) $24,750 $24,750
Housing & Meals (typical) $11,820 $11,820
Total (Direct Costs) $36,570 $36,570

Average Federal Net Price: $35,126 — this is what families actually paid after grants and scholarships (no loans), based on the most recent federal data. Your specific cost could be significantly lower or higher depending on your financial aid eligibility and merit scholarships. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Same Price for Everyone

Tuskegee is a private university, so there is no in-state or out-of-state tuition split and no residency waiver to chase. A family in Ohio and a family in Macon County see the identical tuition line. The only Alabama-specific benefit is the Alabama Incentive Grant, which adds standard double housing on top of a quarter-tuition award for qualified Alabama residents.

⚠️ Heads Up: Tuskegee’s Net Price Calculator Is Currently Down

As of this update, the Net Price Calculator linked from Tuskegee’s financial aid page returns an error message stating that the institution is no longer active with the calculator vendor. That means families cannot run their own estimate through the school’s tool right now. Until it is restored, call or email the Office of Student Financial Services at finaid@tuskegee.edu or 1-800-416-2831 and ask for a written estimate. Tuskegee’s federal school code is 001050.

💸 New for 2026-2027: The Parent PLUS Cap

Federal law now caps Parent PLUS borrowing at $20,000 per year and $65,000 lifetime. Parents can no longer borrow up to the full cost of attendance. At a school with roughly $36,570 in direct costs and modest average grant aid, that gap has to be closed with merit, outside scholarships, or a payment plan. Tuskegee flags this on its own financial aid page and is openly telling families that outside scholarships matter more than they used to. Plan for it now rather than in August.

FAQ — Cost of Attendance at Tuskegee University

Why does Tuskegee’s own fee sheet show a bigger number than the total above?
Because it includes three things our table keeps separate. Tuskegee’s 2026-2027 sheet lists an undergraduate total of about $39,160, which adds mandatory health insurance ($1,800), the All-Access E-Book fee ($710), and renters insurance ($80) on top of tuition, standard fees, room and board. Our table shows tuition and core mandatory fees plus housing and meals so the comparison to other schools stays apples to apples. Budget for the extra $2,590 either way.

Can we waive the student health insurance if we already have coverage?
No. Tuskegee states that health insurance is mandatory with no waivers for all students as a condition of registration, and it is charged every semester. This surprises a lot of families who assume they can opt out with proof of a family plan. Build the $1,800 into your number.

Is there a cheaper housing option than what the total shows?
Yes. The housing figure reflects a mid-range double room. The standard required residence halls (Banneker, Bethune, Douglass, and Tantum) run about $5,305 per semester for room and board at double occupancy, which is roughly $1,200 a year less than the summary figure. Singles and the newer suites cost more. Also note that students with fewer than 60 credit hours are required to live in a double-occupancy residence hall, so freshmen do not get to shop the apartment options.

Can a room and board scholarship pay for a campus apartment?
No, and this catches Presidential and Alabama Incentive Grant winners off guard. Tuskegee states that room and board scholarships and grants cannot be used to pay apartment rental. If your student later moves to University Commons, Marable, or one of the Auburn apartment properties, the housing portion of the award does not follow them there.

Why is the average net price so high compared to other schools?
This is the honest part. The federal average net price at Tuskegee is about $35,126, which sits just under full direct cost and well above the national average of roughly $20,400. The top merit tiers here are genuinely generous, but they are limited in number and the average admitted student does not reach them. Read the net price as a warning that you should not assume aid, and read the merit grid as the specific path to beating it.

What is this $500 enrollment fee I keep seeing?
The scholarship page says new students must pay a non-refundable $500 enrollment fee by the priority date on their scholarship letter, and that the award can be cancelled if it is not received. The bursar’s fee sheet instead itemizes a $200 non-refundable new-student enrollment fee plus a $300 non-refundable housing application fee, which adds to the same $500. Either way, plan on $500 that no scholarship will cover, and treat that date as a hard one.

Do siblings get a discount?
They can. Two or more siblings enrolled in the same semester are eligible for a $300 per-student tuition discount per semester, plus a room discount of $650 per student (two siblings) or $975 per student (three siblings). The catch is that the discounts are not available if either student holds a full tuition or room scholarship, or lives in campus apartments. Applications must be filed annually.

Will tuition go up each year?
Expect modest annual increases, as at most private universities. Your scholarship tier, however, stays defined the same way (full tuition, half tuition, quarter tuition), so a percentage-based award moves with the price while a fixed-dollar transfer grant does not.

📅 Tuskegee Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • October 1: FAFSA opens. Scholarships and grants at Tuskegee are conditioned on completing it, so this is not optional even for merit families.
  • December 1: Two things happen at once. Completed admission applications must be in for Distinguished Presidential consideration, and the priority scholarship application window opens.
  • January 1: The priority scholarship application window closes. Students who qualify are emailed a link and have to submit inside the window.
  • January 15: Completed applications must be in for University Merit consideration. Scholarship award notifications also go out by this date.
  • Mid-February: Scholars Day. Students who receive a scholarship offer are encouraged to attend. Invitation only.
  • July 1: Final fall admission deadline. Applying this late means the merit grid is already spoken for.

Parent rule of thumb: December 1 is your real deadline, not July 1. Everything worth money at Tuskegee is decided in that six-week December-to-January stretch.

Automatic Merit Scholarships — Tuskegee University

Tuskegee publishes a straight grid: hit the GPA and the test score, and you know which award you are looking at. There is no essay contest and no committee guesswork for these tiers. The two things that will cost you money are missing the December or January deadlines, and applying test-optional. Tuskegee does not superscore the ACT or SAT for scholarship purposes, so the best single sitting is what counts.
A note on which year this grid covers: the chart below matches the criteria Tuskegee currently publishes for its next entering freshman class. Cost figures elsewhere on this page are the university’s 2026-2027 published rates. If your student is applying now, this is the grid that applies to them.

One award, not a pile. Colleges apply your student's single best automatic award. Automatic scholarships almost never stack with each other, though some stack with housing, departmental, or outside money. The stacking notes on each card tell you which.

🔁 Renewal Is Stricter Than Most Families Expect
  • 30 earned hours per year, on top of the GPA floor for your tier.
  • Only Tuskegee credits count. External credits, transfer courses, and grades earned elsewhere do not count toward renewal.
  • Summer does not count. Renewal has to be earned in the fall and spring semesters.
  • Senior year of high school still matters. Tuskegee reserves the right to revoke an award if the final cumulative high school GPA or test score falls below the requirement. A senior slide can undo the offer.
  • Annual portal registration. Recipients must register for the Thurgood Marshall, UNCF, and Tuskegee University scholarship portals every year.

Note: students receive the single highest tier they qualify for, not a combination. Institutional awards can be combined with federal and outside aid, but the total cannot exceed the cost of attendance, and if the FAFSA shows federal grant eligibility, institutional awards are adjusted down to direct cost.

Automatic Merit — FAQs (Tuskegee University)

What does my student need for full tuition?
The University Merit Scholarship covers full tuition plus a $300 e-book voucher at a 3.7 unweighted GPA with a 1300 SAT or 28 ACT. That is the entry point for a tuition-free year at Tuskegee.

What if we are just under those numbers?
The grid keeps going. University Achievement (3.5 / 1200 / 26) covers up to half of tuition. The Tuskegee University Grant (3.3 / 1180 / 23) covers a quarter. The Alabama Incentive Grant (3.0 / 1100 / 21) covers a quarter of tuition plus standard double housing, but only for qualified Alabama residents.

Does Tuskegee superscore the ACT or SAT?
No. The financial aid office states in capital letters that superscored results are not permissible for scholarship awards. Plan your test dates so one sitting carries the score you need.

Can my student get merit without submitting test scores?
Generally no, and this is the single most expensive mistake families make here. Test-optional applicants are not eligible for Presidential or Merit. The financial aid page states that test-optional applicants from outside Alabama may not apply for merit-based scholarships at all. The Alabama Incentive Grant is the only tier Tuskegee footnotes as open to test-optional applicants.

Is there really a separate application or not?
Tuskegee says both things on the same page. It says there is no separate scholarship application and that all students are considered on the basis of the admissions file, then states in bold that the priority scholarship application opens December 1, closes January 1, and that all students must apply within the window. Watch your student’s email around December 1 for the application link, and complete it. Do not rely on the sentence that says you do not need to.

Are these renewable?
Yes, with the GPA plus 30 Tuskegee-earned credit hours per year described above. Renewal GPAs run 3.5 for Presidential, 3.3 for Merit, 3.2 for Achievement, and 3.0 for the two grants.

What about transfer students?
Tuskegee sets aside a separate transfer track with its own chart, including a full-tuition transfer merit award at a 3.5 transfer GPA, a $5,000 Transfer Grant at 3.2, and a $5,000 Alabama Transfer Incentive Grant plus housing at 3.0 for Alabama residents. Students must meet both the accepted transfer credit and GPA requirements.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Tuskegee runs one flagship award, and it is the only thing on this page that comes with an interview. The Distinguished Presidential Scholarship covers tuition, room and board, fees, and a $300 e-book voucher. That is a full ride in everything but name, at a school where the average family pays close to sticker. There is no second tier of named competitive awards, no fellows program, and no finalist weekend beyond the mid-February Scholars Day.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at Tuskegee?

Aid Type Stacks with Merit? Parent Translation
Grid awards with each other No Your student gets one tier from the chart, the highest they qualify for. Presidential and Merit are not additive.
Federal grants (Pell, FSEOG) Yes, with a catch They combine, but if the FAFSA shows federal grant eligibility, Tuskegee adjusts the institutional award down to direct cost. Do not assume merit plus Pell equals a refund check.
Outside / external scholarships Yes, up to a ceiling Institutional plus federal plus external cannot exceed total cost of attendance. Tuskegee actively encourages outside awards now that Parent PLUS is capped.
Departmental awards Usually yes The endowed departmental funds in Hidden Gems are the realistic way to close a gap on top of a grid award.
ROTC Often yes Tuskegee hosts Army, Air Force, and Naval ROTC and those scholarships cover tuition. Check the award letter for replacement language.
Athletics Handled separately Athletic aid runs through the Department of Athletics, not financial aid. Talk to the coach and the aid office both.

Bottom line: Tuskegee is a single-award school with a generous top tier. If your student is a 3.8 with a 30 ACT, the Presidential is worth building an application timeline around, because it is the difference between paying $36,000 and paying close to nothing. If they are not in that range, the money conversation here is about the grid plus departmental funds, not about winning a competition.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

What exactly does the Distinguished Presidential cover?
Full tuition, room and board, fees, and a $300 e-book voucher. Practically speaking, that is the whole billed cost of attending.

What does it take to be considered?
A 3.8 unweighted GPA with a 1400 SAT or 30 ACT, a completed Standard Admission application received by December 1, the scholarship application submitted inside the December 1 to January 1 window, and an interview. It is the only Tuskegee award that requires one.

Can a test-optional applicant win it?
No. Presidential and Merit both require qualifying ACT or SAT scores, and superscores are not accepted.

How many are awarded?
Tuskegee does not publish a number, and we will not guess at one. What the university does say is that these are a limited number of renewable merit scholarships and that all awards are subject to the availability of funds. Applying early is the only lever families actually control.

What is Scholars Day?
An invitation-only event in mid-February for students who have been extended a scholarship offer. Tuskegee encourages recipients to attend. Treat the invitation as a good sign and go if you can.

What keeps it?
A 3.5 cumulative GPA and 30 earned Tuskegee credit hours per year. Summer coursework and outside credits do not count toward that 30.

Is Tuskegee a National Merit or Stamps partner?
No to both. There is no National Merit Finalist package here and Tuskegee is not a Stamps partner school. It is a UNCF member institution, and recipients are also required to register annually with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and UNCF scholarship portals.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Tuskegee’s Money Lives in the Departments

Tuskegee has no central scholarship portal like the big public flagships do. Instead it publishes a long list of endowed departmental funds on the financial aid site, most of them selected by faculty inside a single college. There is no “apply to all” button. The awards go to students the department already knows.

  1. Pick the intended major early, because nearly every one of these funds is tied to a specific college or department.
  2. Email the department directly, by name, and ask which of their endowed scholarships an incoming or continuing student can be considered for. Contacts are published per college: engineering students write Ms. Toya Dean, business students write the CBIS office.
  3. Get on the FAFSA. Several of these funds require documented financial need even though they are called scholarships.
  4. Ask your student to be visible in the department. Faculty select most of these, and “demonstrated leadership in the college” appears again and again in the criteria.
  5. Register annually for the UNCF and Thurgood Marshall portals. Tuskegee requires it of scholarship recipients anyway, and both push additional awards to member-school students.

Parent translation: at Tuskegee, the merit grid is automatic and the departmental money is relational. One is a formula, the other is a phone call.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These are the awards that do not show up in the admission packet. Most are endowed departmental funds, most stack on top of a grid award, and several are aimed at students who are already on campus rather than incoming freshmen. Where Tuskegee publishes a dollar figure for the fund rather than a per-student amount, we have said so instead of guessing.

Awarded for one year and renewable for up to four academic years while the student remains in good academic standing. Awards depend on availability of funds under the endowment spending policy.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 The Sibling Discount Nobody Talks About

This one is buried in the bursar’s fee sheet, not the scholarship page. If two or more siblings attend Tuskegee in the same semester, each gets a $300 tuition discount per semester, plus a room discount of $650 per student for two siblings or $975 per student for three. For a two-sibling family in the residence halls, that is roughly $1,900 a year off the bill.

The catch: it is not available if either student holds a full tuition or room scholarship, or lives in the campus apartments. And the application has to be filed annually for each family. Ask the bursar’s office, not financial aid.

🎖 Don’t Overlook ROTC Here

Tuskegee is the only HBCU that offers ROTC for every military branch, including the Space Force, and it hosts Army, Air Force, and Naval detachments on campus. Those scholarships cover tuition. For a family staring at a $36,000 direct cost with a capped Parent PLUS loan, this is a legitimate path that most college lists never mention. Contact the detachments directly rather than going through financial aid.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Can these stack with a grid scholarship?
Generally yes, and that is the point of this section. The ceiling is total cost of attendance, and if the FAFSA shows federal grant eligibility your institutional awards get adjusted down to direct cost. Read the award letter closely, because the ceiling is where surprises happen.

Which ones can an incoming freshman actually get?
Realistically, two. The CSCI Scholars Program is awarded to incoming freshmen who declare Computer Science, Information Systems, or Information Technology, hold a 3.5 high school GPA, and have an ACT Math of 24 or SAT Math of 540. The Food and Nutritional Sciences Advisory Board Scholarship is written for an entering student with an 850 SAT and a 3.0 GPA. Most of the rest require completed credit hours at Tuskegee.

How do I apply if there is no application listed?
For most of these, you do not. Faculty and department committees select recipients. The move is to email the department, state the major, and ask directly what a student needs to do to be considered. For the CSCI award specifically, Tuskegee tells students who are not contacted but want to be considered to call the Department of Computer Science at 334-727-4593.

Why do so many of these say the amount varies?
Because Tuskegee publishes the size of the endowed fund, not the size of the individual award, and several funds are split among multiple recipients. We would rather tell you a number is unpublished than print one that turns out to be the whole pool.

Do these require the FAFSA?
Several explicitly require documented financial need, and Tuskegee conditions scholarships and grants generally on completing the FAFSA. File it even if you expect to qualify for nothing federal.

What about outside scholarships?
Tuskegee is leaning on them harder than it used to, and says so on its financial aid page in the context of the new Parent PLUS caps. The university links families to UNCF, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and a rotating list of outside opportunities. External awards are applied to the student account through the Bursar’s Office.

The Honors Program at Tuskegee University

Read this before you plan around it: Tuskegee’s honors option is a University-Wide Honors Program, not an honors college, and your student cannot apply as a high school senior. Only rising sophomores are accepted. There is also no scholarship money attached to it. If honors admission is part of how your family is comparing schools, Tuskegee works differently from a place like Alabama or Mississippi State, and it is better to know that now.

What Tuskegee offers is a co-curricular program that sits alongside the degree rather than replacing part of it. Students apply after their first year with a 3.2 GPA or better, and the value is access rather than tuition dollars: dinners with the Provost and President, direct engagement with Lyceum speakers, faculty mentors, and preparation for graduate and professional school. Graduates receive presidential recognition and an honors notation on the official transcript.

Completing the program is a real commitment. It requires 45 documented community service hours, participation in the Year-Long Common Reading experience, attendance at 12 Lyceum events, one research, internship, or international experience, a culminating honors paper that may be published in the university research journal, and a maintained 3.2 GPA.

Honors Scholarships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

There is no separate honors scholarship pool at Tuskegee, and we are not going to invent one.

At many universities, honors admission is the gateway to a second layer of money. That is not how it works here. Every institutional dollar in this guide flows through the freshman merit grid, the Distinguished Presidential award, or a departmental fund. Honors participation adds a credential and a network, not a line on the bill.

The practical read: if your student is strong enough to be thinking about honors, aim that energy at the December 1 Presidential deadline instead. That is where the money is. Honors can be added sophomore year once they are already on campus and their GPA is established.

Where High-Achieving Students Should Actually Look
  • Distinguished Presidential: 3.8 GPA, 1400 SAT or 30 ACT, interview, December 1. Tuition, housing, meals, and fees.
  • Departmental Honors: individual departments run their own tracks. The Department of History and Political Science, for example, places strong incoming students in a Freshman Honors Program and offers a Senior Honors sequence.
  • Undergraduate Research: Tuskegee runs an Office of Undergraduate Research, which pairs naturally with the honors research requirement.
  • CSCI Scholars: for computing majors, this is the closest thing to an honors-style selective cohort with money attached.

Honors Program — FAQs (Tuskegee University)

Can my senior apply to honors along with admission?
No. Tuskegee states that only rising sophomore students will be accepted into the program. Your student applies after completing their freshman year.

What GPA do they need?
A 3.2 or above to apply, and a maintained 3.2 to stay in and complete.

Does honors come with a scholarship?
No. There is no honors-specific award. Merit money at Tuskegee comes from the freshman grid and the Presidential scholarship, both decided before enrollment.

Is it worth doing without the money?
For a student headed to graduate or professional school, yes. The transcript notation, the research or international requirement, and direct faculty mentorship are the kinds of things that show up on a med school or PhD application. For a student who just wants the degree, it is a significant time commitment for a credential.

Who do we contact?
The program lists Dr. Sheena Harris, Assistant Professor of History, at 334-724-4317 and tuhonors@tuskegee.edu.

⭐ College Specialty

Tuskegee is a small private university with an outsized footprint. Booker T. Washington founded it in 1881, George Washington Carver did his life’s work here, and the campus itself is a National Historic Site designed in part by Robert R. Taylor, the first African American graduate of MIT. Families sometimes come for the history and then discover that the academic program list is unusually technical for a school of 2,650 undergraduates.

Nationally Known Program:
Aerospace Science Engineering — Tuskegee runs an ABET-accredited aerospace engineering degree, and it is the direct academic descendant of the Tuskegee Airmen legacy that made this campus famous. Very few schools this size offer accredited aerospace engineering at all, and the combination of that program with ROTC detachments for every branch makes Tuskegee genuinely unusual for a student pointed at aviation, defense, or space.
  • Veterinary Medicine and the Animal Sciences pipeline: Tuskegee’s College of Veterinary Medicine is the reason many pre-vet families look here at all, and the undergraduate Animal, Poultry and Veterinary Sciences track feeds it. One honest note for planning: the College of Veterinary Medicine was placed on probationary accreditation status by the AVMA Council on Education in 2022 and remains accredited while it works to clear the cited deficiencies, with a 2025 national licensing exam pass rate of 72 percent. Undergraduate admission is unaffected, but if the DVM program is the destination, verify current status with the college before you commit.
  • Engineering across the board: ABET accreditation covers mechanical, chemical, electrical, and computer engineering along with aerospace, and the computer science degree is separately accredited by ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission. Construction Science is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education.
  • Architecture: a five-year professional Bachelor of Architecture accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, housed on a campus that African American architects built. Not many undergraduates get to study architecture inside their own case study.
  • Chemistry: the B.S. is approved by the American Chemical Society, and Tuskegee is the only HBCU and one of just nine universities in Alabama to hold that approval. For a pre-med or pre-pharmacy student, that is a real signal.
  • Business: the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science holds AACSB accreditation, which fewer than a third of business schools worldwide carry.
  • Nursing and Allied Health: the nursing program is accredited by ACEN and approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing. Recent NCLEX-RN pass rates have run in the mid-60 percent range, which is below where most states want programs to sit, so ask the school directly about current pass rates and what they have changed.
  • Social Work: accredited by the Council on Social Work Education continuously since 1974, one of the longer unbroken runs in the country.

The honest summary: Tuskegee is a legacy institution with a serious technical core and a price tag that only works if your student lands on the merit grid. The programs above are the reason to reach for that grid rather than settle for a cheaper option.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Here is the honest shape of Tuskegee. The published merit grid is one of the clearest in the country: five tiers, a GPA, a test score, and you know what you are getting. A 3.7 with a 1300 SAT means full tuition. A 3.8 with a 1400 means tuition, housing, meals, and fees. That is real money, and it is knowable a year in advance.

The flip side is that the average family here pays close to sticker. The federal average net price of about $35,126 sits just under full direct cost and well above the national average, which tells you the grid is the exception rather than the rule. Add the new $20,000 annual cap on Parent PLUS borrowing and the fact that Tuskegee’s own net price calculator is currently offline, and this becomes a school where you cannot afford to guess at the numbers.

So the plan is simple, even if it is not easy. Submit test scores, because test-optional admission closes the door on Presidential and Merit. Make sure the ACT includes the Science section. Get the completed application in by December 1, not July 1. Watch for the scholarship application link that opens December 1 and closes January 1, and submit it even though the same page says you do not need to. File the FAFSA. Then email the department your student wants to major in and ask what endowed funds they control, because that is where the second layer of money lives at Tuskegee.

If your student lands on that grid, they get an ABET-accredited engineering degree, or an ACS-approved chemistry degree, or a NAAB-accredited architecture degree, on a campus that is also a National Historic Site, for a fraction of what a comparable private school would charge. If they do not, the math gets hard fast. Which is exactly why the December calendar matters more here than almost anywhere else on this site.
