Automatic Merit Scholarships — Spelman College
Most schools publish a grid — this score plus this GPA equals this dollar amount. Spelman doesn’t, and it isn’t hiding one. Automatic Merit — FAQs (Spelman College)
Do I have to apply separately for Spelman scholarships?
No. Spelman states plainly that your application for admission also serves as your application for merit scholarships. Once you’re admitted, you’re automatically considered for every merit award available to first-year students. The only exceptions are the Bonner, UPS, and Ralph Lauren scholarships, which are handled outside the Office of Admissions and do require separate applications.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)
At schools like Alabama or Georgia, the biggest awards live behind their own application: extra essays, an interview weekend, a finalist competition in February. Spelman collapses all of that into one step. There is no finalist weekend, no scholarship interview, no nomination process. Everything — including the two full-ride Presidential awards — is decided from the admission file.

The Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program at Spelman
Spelman only invites admitted Early Action and Early Decision students to apply for the Honors Program. Regular Decision applicants are not eligible. Students who were deferred out of an early round and later admitted are also not eligible.
There is no late application, no appeal, and no sophomore-year entry point advertised for first-year applicants. If Honors matters to your daughter, the application must go in by November 1. Full stop.
Founded in 1980 and named for scholar-teacher Ethel Waddell Githii, the Githii Honors Program is Spelman’s interdisciplinary community for students who want their academic life to be the center of the college experience rather than a box to check. It’s built around independent research, a reading and lecture series, faculty mentorship, and a senior portfolio or research project.
The framing matters here. Githii isn’t a perks program — you won’t find a pitch about priority registration and nicer dorms.
