Planning tip: At large public universities, tuition, fees, and housing usually increase modestly each year (often in the 2–5% range). For early budgeting, families may want to plan for roughly $1,000–$1,500 more in-state or $2,000–$3,000 more out-of-state in total direct costs once new rates are published.

What the table above leaves out

Spelman’s official first-year cost of attendance for 2026-2027 comes to $61,683 living on campus, not the direct-cost total above. The difference is the stuff that never shows up on a tuition chart: student health insurance at $1,758 a year, a one-time $405 new-student fee, plus books, transportation, personal expenses, and loan fees. Ask the Student Account Center whether the health insurance charge can be waived with your family’s own coverage before you build your budget around it.

Georgia Residents: State Money Follows You to a Private College

This is the piece out-of-state families cannot access and in-state families often forget. Spelman participates in all three Georgia programs:

• HOPE Scholarship and Zell Miller Scholarship: Spelman publishes a standard rate of $2,985 per semester at 12 or more credit hours, and $1,493 per semester at 6 to 11 hours. HOPE needs a 3.0 high school GPA as calculated by GSFC. Zell Miller needs a 3.7 plus a 1200 SAT or 25 ACT.
• Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant (GTEG): non-need-based help for Georgia residents attending an eligible private college in the state. The amount is set by the legislature each year.
• Georgia College Completion Grant (GCCG): up to $2,500 for students who have finished at least 80 percent of their degree and hit a funding gap. This one shows up junior or senior year, so put a note in your calendar now.

📅 Spelman Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

• Nov 1: Early Action and Early Decision both close. This is the only round that opens the door to Honors and to the Bonner, UPS, and Ralph Lauren awards.
• Dec 1: The earliest FAFSA priority date Spelman publishes. Treat it as the real one.
• Feb 1: Regular Decision closes. Merit is still on the table in this round. Honors is not.
• At admission: Scholarship decisions arrive with the acceptance letter in the SpelCheck portal, not months later.
• May 1: $500 enrollment deposit due.

Parent rule of thumb: at Spelman, “apply early” is not scheduling advice. It is money advice.

A word on the label. At most schools “automatic” means a published chart: hit this GPA and this test score, get this dollar amount. Spelman does not work that way. What is automatic here is the consideration. Your student’s application for admission is her scholarship application. There is no separate form, no request to submit, and nothing to opt into. A committee reviews every admitted student and awards from that pool. So there is no number to chase, and no number to fall short of either.

Spelman mixes two very different kinds of awards and the language looks similar. The Presidential and Dean’s tiers are described as tuition, fees, and room and board for four academic years, meaning each year is covered. The Student of Distinction Scholarship covers up to $10,000 across four academic years, which works out closer to $2,500 a year. Same phrasing, wildly different value. Check which one an offer letter is describing before you build a budget on it.

Spelman does not have a separate competitive scholarship track, and that is not a gap in our data.

There is no essay contest, no finalist weekend, no nomination process, and no interview round for institutional merit at Spelman. Everything the Office of Admissions awards runs through the one application your student already submitted. If you have been building a spring calendar around scholarship interviews the way you would for a big public flagship, you can take that off the list here.

The one real exception is the group of Civic Scholar awards, covered in Hidden Gems below, which are handled outside Admissions and do require a separate application.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

Is there a scholarship deadline separate from the admission deadline?
For everything the Office of Admissions awards, no. The admission deadline is the scholarship deadline. Early Action and Early Decision close Nov 1, Regular Decision closes Feb 1.

Does Spelman participate in National Merit?
No. Spelman is not a National Merit sponsor institution, so a Finalist designation does not trigger a scholarship package here the way it does at some public flagships.

Is Spelman a QuestBridge or Stamps partner?
No to both. Neither program is a route into Spelman aid.

If there is no competitive track, where does a strong student stand out?
In the Honors Program invitation and in the Civic Scholar awards. Both are gated behind applying Early Action or Early Decision, which loops back to the same Nov 1 date.

What actually strengthens the application?

🧠 Parent Strategy: Spelman’s “Two Doors” Rule

Almost every award on this page comes to your student automatically through the admission application. Three do not. The Bonner, UPS, and Ralph Lauren scholarships are awarded outside the Office of Admissions, require a separate application, and are only open to students who applied Early Action or Early Decision.

1. Apply Early Action or Early Decision by Nov 1. This is the door. Miss it and doors two and three do not exist.
2. File the FAFSA by Dec 1. Several of these awards are need-informed, and aid is distributed in the order files are completed.
3. Call Admissions at 404-270-5193 and ask directly how to apply for the Civic Scholar Programs. Spelman names them but does not publish a standalone application page.
4. Save every confirmation. Scholarship decisions live in the SpelCheck portal alongside the acceptance letter.

Parent translation: at Spelman there is no spring scramble to catch up. Everything is decided off the application she submits in the fall.

The overlooked one: the Gordon Zeto Scholarship for international students is the only Spelman award that explicitly includes student health insurance on top of tuition, fees, and room and board. That insurance line is roughly $1,758 a year, and for an international family it is often the hardest cost to plan around.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Do I have to apply for these separately?
For most of them, no. The Office of Admissions considers every admitted first-year student for the awards it controls. The three exceptions are Bonner, UPS, and Ralph Lauren, which are awarded outside Admissions and do require their own application.

What is the difference between the Flanigan Scholarship and the Robert D. Flanigan Scholarship?
They are two different awards, and Spelman lists them separately. The Flanigan Scholarship is a four-year need-based award for Georgia residents, with preference for Atlanta Public Schools graduates. The Robert D. Flanigan Scholarship is a four-year award covering tuition, fees, and room and board for students graduating from the Atlanta Public School system. If your student is an APS graduate, she is potentially in the running for both.

Can these stack with a Presidential or Dean’s award?
Generally not, because most of the awards on this page are also full-tuition or full-ride packages, and Spelman gives one coordinated offer rather than two large scholarships. The capped awards behave differently. A $20,000 or $25,000 four-year award leaves room underneath for need-based grants and Georgia state money.

The $25,000 Joan B. Johnson award, is that per year?
No. Spelman’s wording is $25,000 toward direct costs for the next four academic years. Budget it as roughly $6,250 a year. Same structure applies to the $20,000 Karsh KIPP award.

Bonner, UPS, and Ralph Lauren do not list amounts. Why?
Spelman names all three but does not publish coverage figures for them. We are not going to guess at a number your family might plan around. Call Admissions and ask for the current award value in writing before you count on it.

Are these open to current Spelman students?
The awards on this page are first-year awards. Continuing students apply through Spelman’s separate scholarship portal, which matches enrolled students to awards each year. That process requires a completed FAFSA and typically a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and first-round offers go out around July 10.

⚠️ The one thing that will cost you Honors: applying in the wrong round.

• Only Early Action and Early Decision admits are invited to apply. Both close Nov 1.
• Regular Decision applicants and students deferred out of an early round are explicitly not eligible.
• The rising-sophomore application was permanently suspended in 2023. There is no second chance in year two, and transfer students cannot apply either.

This is the single most consequential deadline on this entire page, and it has nothing to do with money directly. It is a one-shot door.

Being straight with you: Spelman does not attach dedicated scholarship funding to the Githii Honors Program, so there is nothing to list here. Honors students draw from the same institutional awards every other admitted student is considered for. Some schools bury a second pot of money behind an honors application. Spelman does not, and pretending otherwise would waste your student’s time.

What Honors Is Actually Worth Here

• Faculty access: smaller seminar settings and close work with faculty, which is the foundation of graduate school recommendations.
• Research pipeline: a departmentally supervised senior research project, which matters enormously if she is headed for a PhD or medical school.
• Community: a first-year retreat and a cohort that sticks together for four years.
• Study abroad and exchange: Honors students carry their program requirements into domestic exchange and study abroad rather than pausing them.

The thing most families do not know about:
The Atlanta University Center Consortium. Spelman shares cross-registration with Morehouse and Clark Atlanta, plus the shared Woodruff Library. In practice that means a Spelman student takes courses across three campuses without transferring, without a separate application, and without extra tuition. A 2,600-student college that functions academically like a much larger one is a genuinely unusual thing to buy.

💰 If Engineering Is the Goal, Read This Twice

Spelman does not grant engineering degrees. It runs the Dual Degree Engineering Program (DDEP) through the AUC Consortium with Georgia Tech and roughly fifteen other partner engineering schools. Your student majors in something like physics, math, chemistry, computer science, economics, environmental science, or general science, spends three years at Spelman, then transfers for two more years at the engineering school and finishes with two bachelor’s degrees.

Here is the part nobody puts in a brochure. It is a five-year plan and a Spelman scholarship is a four-year award. A renewable Spelman scholarship covers the three years she is at Spelman. Years four and five are billed by the partner engineering institution under that school’s own aid rules. If DDEP is the plan, ask both schools in writing what happens to funding at the handoff, and do it before she deposits. That gap is a five-figure surprise for families who assume a four-year scholarship covers a four-year degree.
