🎓 Quick context before the numbers

New College is Florida’s public honors college, and it is small: about 870 undergraduates on a bayfront campus in Sarasota, with an 8 to 1 student-faculty ratio and an average class of 14. Students build each semester around a written “contract” with a faculty advisor and get written evaluations from professors instead of the usual letter grades on most work. That setup matters for money, too, because it changes how scholarships get renewed.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at New College of Florida (Read This First)

  • There is no merit grid anymore. New College rewrote its scholarship page in late October 2026 and no longer publishes dollar amounts or GPA and test cutoffs. Your number shows up in the offer letter. Charts online showing a “Four Winds” award or a $10,000 out-of-state scholarship are from older years.
  • Feb 1 is the money date. Nov 1 is just Early Action. Applying for fall by Feb 1 is what triggers the scholarship guarantee, and the FAFSA priority date is also Feb 1. Admission stays open until July 1, but the money does not wait that long.
  • Best one wins. If your student qualifies for more than one New College scholarship, they get the single largest one, not the total. And all aid combined is capped at the cost of attendance.
  • An “incomplete” now counts as an F. Starting with Fall 2025 records, New College computes a GPA for aid purposes, and unfinished work is scored as failing. Bright Futures and Benacquisto need a 3.0, and NCF’s own aid needs a 2.0 plus finished contracts.
  • The Foundation application is a separate step. It only opens after admission, lives in the myNCF portal, and has to be redone every year.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? No. New College of Florida is test-required for admission.

Do you need test scores for scholarships at New College of Florida? SAT, ACT, or CLT scores are required for admission, so every New College scholarship decision sees them. The CLT counts the same as the SAT and ACT.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 21-27; SAT: 1120-1280.

Average net price? About $9,078/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? Yes. Institutional waivers are available.

💰 Cost of Attendance at New College of Florida: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest New College of Florida has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $400 to $1,100 more than the in-state total below. $900 to $2,400 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$21,258
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $6,724
Housing & meals (typical) $14,534
Total billed cost $21,258
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$47,005
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $32,471
Housing & meals (typical) $14,534
Total billed cost $47,005

That is $25,747 more per year than Florida residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $9,078 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

Grandparent Waiver: Out-of-state students with a grandparent who meets Florida residency documentation rules can have the out-of-state portion of tuition waived, worth about $21,323 a year. Supply is limited and first-come, first-served. For 2025-26 high school graduates the minimum scores were 1330 SAT, 29 ACT, or 95 CLT. Submit the form right after admission.

Florida high school waiver: A student who does not qualify as a Florida resident for tuition but attended a Florida high school for three straight years and graduated there can be charged in-state rates. This status does not unlock Florida grants or Bright Futures.

D.C. TAG: Washington, D.C. residents can use the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant at New College, up to $10,000 a year.

What Families Actually Paid, by Income

The federal government tracks what first-year, in-state students paid after grants (2023-24, the latest published year). The spread is wide, which is why the net price calculator matters more than the sticker price here.

  • $0 to $30,000: about $3,591 a year
  • $30,001 to $48,000: about $3,582
  • $48,001 to $75,000: about $4,880
  • $75,001 to $110,000: about $10,204
  • $110,001 and up: about $13,586

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at New College of Florida

How much does New College of Florida cost per year?
For 2026-27, New College estimates the full budget at $26,198 for Florida residents and $51,945 for out-of-state students. The part you actually get billed for (tuition, fees, housing, and food) is $21,258 in-state and $47,005 out-of-state. The rest covers books, transportation, and personal costs.

Is New College free for low-income students?
Close to it for tuition. Students who qualify for a Federal Pell Grant get full tuition and fees covered through a mix of grants, scholarships, and waivers, and the Pell Grant itself is not counted toward that. So the Pell money is left over for housing and food. This applies to out-of-state students too.

Can out-of-state students pay in-state tuition at New College?
A few can. The Grandparent Waiver removes the out-of-state portion of tuition (about $21,323 a year) for students with a Florida-resident grandparent, but it is limited and first-come, first-served. Students who went to a Florida high school for three straight years may qualify for in-state rates, and D.C. residents can use D.C. TAG. New College does not list a regional tuition exchange.

Does Bright Futures cover New College?
Yes. Florida Academic Scholars covers 100% of tuition and fees, about $6,724 here, and Medallion covers 75%. Neither touches housing or food, which run about $14,534 on campus. That housing line is where most Florida families feel the cost.

Does New College meet full financial need?
It reports meeting, on average, all of the need it calculated for first-year students who got need-based aid. But the same report shows only 28 of 82 of those students had their need marked fully met, so do not plan around a guarantee. File the FAFSA by Feb 1 and compare the actual offer.

Is housing required?
Most first-years live on campus (83% in fall 2025), and on-campus housing comes with a required meal plan. Budget about $9,450 for housing and $5,084 for food for 2026-27.

📅 New College Money Timeline (Simple Version)

  • Nov 1: Early Action application. Gets you a decision by mid-December, and there’s no application fee.
  • Feb 1: The real money date. Apply for fall by now for the scholarship guarantee, and file the FAFSA by the same day.
  • January through March 31: Foundation scholarship application inside the myNCF portal (the 2026 window ran Jan 9 to Mar 31).
  • Aug 31 after graduation: Florida residents file the FFAA for Bright Futures.

Parent rule of thumb: treat Feb 1 as your deadline even if your student is still deciding between schools.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at New College of Florida

New College considers every admitted student for its scholarships automatically. There’s no extra form for the main awards. What’s different here: there’s no published chart. The college reads the whole file (grades, course rigor, activities, leadership) and sets the amount. SAT, ACT, or CLT scores are required for admission, so they are part of that read.

Residency
Based on published cutoffs for entering freshmen. Always verify with the college before finalizing plans.
Start with your state. The awards in this first group come from the state, not the college. They are decided by residency and the FAFSA, and they stack on top of whatever automatic merit award the college gives below. If you live out of state, use the toggle above and these will step aside.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Florida students with a 3.5 recalculated GPA and a 29 ACT who logged the hours and filed the FFAA. At New College the renewal risk is different from a big state school: there are no letter grades on most work, so an unfinished contract or an incomplete is what sinks the 3.0, not a bad final.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Florida students with a 3.0 recalculated GPA and a 24 ACT plus the hours. The 1190 SAT line is the one that catches people, and there is no GPA-only path. Most of New College's first-years clear the GPA side easily, so the test score is usually the deciding factor.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Florida students with the lowest Student Aid Index who file the FAFSA by Feb 1. New College gives preference to on-time filers, and the pool is small: about $216,000 in FSAG went to NCF students in 2023-24.

🕵
Who Actually Wins

NCF rewrote this page on Oct 27, 2026 and no longer publishes amounts. Older tables (Four Winds, $10,000 to $15,000 out-of-state awards) are from 2023-24 and 2024-25 and should not be used for planning. Renewal needs satisfactory contracts, a 67% completion pace, and, from Fall 2025 records on, a 2.0 GPA computed by the Registrar. Incompletes count as an F.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most admitted students who apply for fall by Feb 1. New College says it funds virtually every admitted first-year who meets that date. The amount comes from a read of the whole file, not a grid, so two students with the same GPA can see different numbers. For a sense of scale, first-years without financial need averaged $10,466 in institutional merit in NCF's 2025-26 estimate.

💡
Strategic Detail
Renewal follows NCF's aid rules: satisfactory contracts, a 67% completion pace, and a 2.0 Registrar-computed GPA, plus continued Pell eligibility each year.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Pell-eligible students from any state who file the FAFSA early and clear verification quickly. For an out-of-state Pell student that means roughly $32,471 of tuition and fees covered before Pell is touched. The family still faces housing and food, about $14,534, minus whatever Pell covers.
Data last verified Oct 31, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Note: Florida state aid (Bright Futures, FSAG, Benacquisto) shows above New College’s own awards. Use the in-state / out-of-state toggle to see only what applies to you. New College gives each student its single best institutional award, and total aid from all sources is capped at cost of attendance.

Automatic Merit FAQs (New College of Florida)

How much is the Presidential Honors Scholarship?
New College no longer publishes an amount. It’s set from the whole application. For a sense of scale, first-year students without financial need averaged $10,466 in New College merit money in the college’s 2025-26 estimate.

Do I need a separate application for New College scholarships?
Not for the automatic ones. Apply for fall admission by Feb 1 and your student is considered. The Foundation scholarships are the exception and need their own application after admission.

Is tuition free at New College for Pell students?
Tuition and fees are covered for Pell-eligible students, in-state or out-of-state, and the Pell Grant is kept separate so it can go toward housing and food. File the FAFSA by Feb 1.

Can my student get more than one New College scholarship?
Usually not from the college itself. New College assigns the best single award. State aid like Bright Futures, plus Pell and Foundation scholarships, can stack on top up to the cost of attendance.

How does Bright Futures renewal work without letter grades?
The Registrar computes a GPA from your student’s evaluations. Bright Futures Academic Scholars needs a 3.0, Medallion needs a 2.75, and starting with Fall 2025 records an incomplete counts as an F.

How do I keep New College’s own scholarship?
Finish each semester’s contract and January project, complete at least two-thirds of attempted credits, and hold a 2.0 on the Registrar’s aid GPA. Stay full time (12 credits) every semester.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

New College has one big-ticket award, and you can’t apply for it. The President’s Inner Circle is a full ride (tuition, fees, room, and board) for Florida students with exceptional grades and test scores, and admissions reaches out to the students it picks. There’s no essay contest or finalist weekend.

Two things to know about how it works. First, it’s a last-dollar guarantee. New College counts Bright Futures, Pell, other grants, and waivers first, then fills the rest up to tuition, fees, room, and board. Second, the total is locked at the year-one price, so if housing goes up later, the difference may have to come from somewhere else.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at New College?

Aid Type Stacks? Parent Translation
New College admission awards No You get the single best one. Presidential Honors and the Inner Circle don’t add together.
President’s Inner Circle Built from everything State and federal aid count toward the full ride, so winning Bright Futures doesn’t give you extra cash on top.
Bright Futures / Benacquisto Yes State awards stack with New College merit up to cost of attendance.
Foundation scholarships Yes The college says these can sit on top of admission merit. They’re your best tool for the housing gap.
Pell and need-based grants Usually Pell is kept outside the Pell guarantee, so it can pay for housing and food.
Outside scholarships Up to the cap If total aid would pass cost of attendance, something gets trimmed. Ask which award shrinks before you count on it.

A last-dollar guarantee. New College reaches tuition, fees, room, and board using gift aid from all sources (Bright Futures, Pell, other grants, waivers, and NCF money), with the total fixed at the costs listed in the year of admission. Later price increases may have to come from other sources.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Florida students at the very top of New College's applicant pool, picked by admissions rather than by application. No cutoffs are published, but for context the top quarter of the class sits above a 1280 SAT or 27 ACT, and more than half had a 4.0 weighted GPA. Students who do not hear from admissions by early spring should ask their counselor directly.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

How do you get the President’s Inner Circle Scholarship?
You don’t apply. New College’s admissions office contacts Florida students with exceptional GPAs and test scores. In past cycles the admission file had to be complete by April 1 and the invitation had to be accepted within 14 days, so check email closely in the spring.

Can out-of-state students get the Inner Circle full ride?
No. It’s for Florida residents only. Out-of-state students compete for Presidential Honors and can look at the Grandparent Waiver.

Is the Inner Circle really a full ride?
It covers tuition, fees, room, and board at the price listed the year your student starts. It doesn’t cover books, travel, or personal costs, and later price increases aren’t guaranteed.

Is the Inner Circle running for Fall 2027?
New College’s page still describes the Fall 2026 class. Ask admissions directly before building a budget around it.

Is New College a National Merit sponsor?
Yes, New College is on NMSC’s college-sponsor list. That matters for Florida Finalists, because a college-sponsored award is one of the ways to become a National Merit Scholar and unlock Benacquisto, which covers the full in-state cost of attendance. Name New College as first choice with NMSC on time.

Is New College a Stamps or QuestBridge partner?
No to both.

🧠 Parent Strategy: The Second Application Most Families Skip

The admission offer covers New College’s automatic money. The Foundation scholarships, funded by donors, alumni, and local groups, need a separate application that only opens after your student is admitted.

  1. Get admitted and set up the New College account (the @ncf.edu email comes with it).
  2. Log into the myNCF portal and click the Scholarship Manager tile.
  3. Finish the one General Application. It considers your student for every fund they fit.
  4. File the FAFSA, because some funds require financial need.
  5. Watch the NCF email from mid-April and send any follow-up forms fast.

Parent translation: skip this and your student still keeps the admission award, but you leave the money that usually covers housing on the table. And it has to be redone every year.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

When is the New College Foundation scholarship deadline?
In the 2026 cycle the application opened January 9 and closed March 31. The 2027 dates aren’t posted yet, so check the Foundation page in early January.

Can my student apply before being admitted?
No. Only admitted or current students with an @ncf.edu account can open Scholarship Manager. That’s one more reason to apply early.

Can my student get a Foundation scholarship and Presidential Honors?
Yes. New College says the two can combine, as long as total aid stays at or under the cost of attendance.

What is the New College Need-Based Grant?
It’s the college’s own grant for students who still have unmet need after other aid. There’s no form beyond the FAFSA, and on-time filers (Feb 1) get preference.

Do Foundation scholarships renew?
Not automatically. Students reapply every year, and an award can be cancelled for changing degrees, unfinished contracts, or dropping below full time.

Will an outside scholarship reduce my New College aid?
It can if the total would push past the cost of attendance. Report it to financial aid and ask which award gets adjusted.

Honors at New College: The Whole School Is the Honors Program

At most universities, “honors” means a smaller college inside a big one, with its own application and its own scholarships. New College works the other way around. It is Florida’s public honors college, so every student is in the honors program from day one. There’s no second application, no honors cutoff, and no separate honors scholarship to chase.

  • Contracts: each semester your student writes goals and a course plan with a faculty advisor, and finishing that contract is what counts.
  • January projects: a month-long independent study project every January.
  • Senior thesis: students finish with a thesis or senior project and an oral baccalaureate exam.
  • Evaluations, not grades: professors write evaluations. Since Fall 2025, students can choose letter grades in some courses, which helps for pre-med and other prerequisites.

Honors Scholarships & Fellowships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

New College doesn’t run a separate honors scholarship. The “Presidential Honors Scholarship” in the automatic section is the college’s general merit award, open to every admitted student.

Why the structure matters for money

Because there are no letter grades on most work, keeping scholarships is mostly about finishing things. An unfinished contract or an incomplete hurts more here than one bad grade would elsewhere, and since Fall 2025 an incomplete counts as an F in the aid GPA.

Honors FAQs (New College of Florida)

Does New College have a separate honors college?
No. The entire college is Florida’s honors college, so there’s nothing extra to apply to.

Is the Presidential Honors Scholarship only for honors students?
Every New College student is an honors student, so it’s open to all admitted students. It’s the main automatic merit award.

Will graduate schools understand narrative evaluations?
New College sends a letter explaining its system and can prepare grade or GPA equivalency letters on request. Students can also choose letter grades in key courses.

Is the workload heavier than a regular state university?
It’s more self-directed. Classes are small (average 14 students), and students are expected to manage their own contracts and independent projects.

⭐ College Specialty

New College is a small liberal arts school that happens to be public. Students design much of their own path and spend a lot of time one-on-one with faculty, and the college sits right on Sarasota Bay. Since 2023 it has been through a major leadership and curriculum overhaul under a state-appointed board, so the school your student visits may look different from older reviews and rankings. Visit in person and ask current students what’s changed.

Signature Program:
Marine Biology: New College’s bayfront campus is home to the Pritzker Marine Biology Research Lab, and marine biology is one of the most common majors among recent graduates. For a student who wants to be doing hands-on field research in their first two years, this is the draw.
  • Computer Science and Data Science: one of the most popular majors, with a Master’s in Applied Data Science on campus for students who want to keep going.
  • Biological and Physical Sciences: a strong share of graduates, supported by a natural science complex that’s well equipped for a school this size.
  • Economics and Environmental Studies: both regularly among the top graduating majors.
  • Liberal Arts and design-your-own majors: the single largest group of graduates. Students can build a custom area of study with faculty approval.
  • Athletics: a growing NAIA program (the Mighty Banyans), which is new for a school that had almost no varsity sports a few years ago.

✅ Wrapping It Up

New College is a different kind of bet. It’s a public school priced like one, with in-state tuition around $6,700, but it runs like a tiny private liberal arts college: small classes, contracts instead of grade sheets, and a senior thesis for everyone. For the right student, the self-starter who’d rather design a path than follow one, that’s rare at a public price.

The money side takes a little more work than usual, because New College stopped publishing its scholarship chart. Here’s the short version. Apply for fall by Feb 1 and file the FAFSA the same day. Florida students should line up Bright Futures, and Pell-eligible students from any state get tuition and fees covered. Then do the second application most families miss, the Foundation scholarships in the myNCF portal, because that’s the money that usually closes the housing gap. Once your student is there, help them understand that finishing every contract matters more for keeping scholarships than any single grade would.

I started CollegeReadyParent while working through college costs for my own kid, and quickly figured out that the number a school advertises and the number a family actually pays are two very different things. Since then I’ve gone school by school pulling apart award letters, scholarship pages, and cost sheets to find what families are supposed to just know. This site is the version of that research I wish someone had handed me. More about Leo →
