What a Tenth of a GPA Point Is Worth

Merit grids are price lists: earn this number, receive that award. We priced every rung of the 231 published ladders in our database to answer the question families argue about at the kitchen table: what actually moves the needle, the GPA or the test? And because nearly every grid prints its test floors in two currencies, we priced the test both ways, in ACT points and in SAT points.

Start with the price list itself.

On the published merit ladders in our database, moving up one rung pays a median of $3,000 a year, $12,000 over four years. One additional ACT point is worth a median of $2,000 a year. On the same grids, that test rung reads as 30 SAT points, so 30 additional SAT points carry the same $2,000. One additional tenth of a GPA point is worth $600.

Every dollar figure in this study comes from the same college’s own published grid: the difference between what a student earns on one rung and what the same student would earn on the rung above. No modeling, no estimates of chances. These are prices the colleges themselves printed, and where they printed them in both testing currencies, we report both.

What we counted

Automatic means the award is granted on published criteria with no separate application, the same definition as in our first study. Our universe is 2,271 automatic awards at 380 of our 422 colleges, excluding ROTC and military awards, service academies, athletic aid, and employee tuition waivers.

The pricing analysis uses the subset of that money that is structured as a ladder: 1,433 tiered awards at 231 colleges, a little over half the database. From those ladders we extracted every adjacent pair of rungs at the same college where the dollar value rises, 271 usable steps at 105 colleges, and then isolated the steps where only one input changes: 75 steps where the GPA requirement rises and the test requirement does not, and 15 where the test rises and the GPA does not. That isolation is what lets us quote a clean price per GPA tenth and per test point. Nearly every test-priced step publishes its floor in both ACT and SAT terms, so the SAT figures in this study are the same steps read in the college’s own SAT column, not a separate sample. The test sample is small either way, and we treat it accordingly in the limitations.

Finding 1: The currency of automatic money is GPA

Before pricing the increments, look at what gates the money at all.

Of the 1,175 automatic awards that publish any academic requirement, 98% use GPA. Only 38% involve a test score at all, and a test-only gate is nearly extinct: 28 awards in the entire database. A student cannot test their way past a transcript. The GPA is the passport; the test, where it appears, adjusts the fare. And where the test appears, it almost never appears in only one form: of the 444 test-gated automatic awards, 414 publish both an ACT floor and an SAT floor for the same rung. Just 26 awards are gated by the ACT alone and 4 by the SAT alone. There is no separate pot of ACT money or SAT money. There is one rung, printed with two price tags.

The 1,096 awards with no academic gate are not free money for everyone. They are overwhelmingly defined by geography instead: 192 are in-state awards, 140 are out-of-state awards, mostly the tuition waivers we documented in our first study, and 33 are regional. Where the grid does not ask who you are academically, it usually asks where you live.

Finding 2: The price of one rung

Across the 271 steps we priced, the median rung is worth $3,000 a year, with the middle half of steps falling between $1,500 and $6,750. Multiply by four: the typical single step on a merit grid is a $12,000 decision. Ninety-five of the 271 steps are worth $5,000 a year or more, and at 38 colleges the ladder’s top rung reaches full tuition or better.

This is the number that should reframe how families read a merit grid. The grid is usually presented as trivia, a table on an admissions page. It is closer to a wage scale. A student sitting just below a rung in the fall of junior year has a concrete, knowable amount of money riding on whether they cross it, and unlike nearly everything else in admissions, the college has told you the amount in advance.

Ladders like these exist at 55% of the colleges in our database, ranging from 44% of northeastern colleges to about 60% across the Southeast, Southwest, and West. This is the mechanical foundation of the regional pattern in our first study: where the grid exists, the money is knowable before you apply.

Finding 3: The test point beats the GPA tenth, three to one

Now the kitchen-table question. When the same college’s ladder prices both inputs, here is what each is worth, in every currency the grids print.

Where colleges price the increments separately, a test point pays a median of $2,000 a year against $600 for a GPA tenth: roughly three to one. In SAT terms, that works out to about $650 a year for every 10 points. Now weigh the effort behind each. A tenth of a cumulative GPA takes semesters of sustained work to move, and by senior fall it is nearly frozen. An ACT point, or a 30-point SAT gain, is routinely earned in a single retake with a few weeks of targeted practice. On the grids, the cheapest input to improve is also the one that pays triple.

The exchange rate the colleges print themselves

We did not have to borrow a conversion table to price the SAT. The grids publish their own. Because 414 test-gated awards print both floors on the same rung, the database contains hundreds of ACT-to-SAT pairings written by the colleges, and the pattern is unmistakable: on merit grids, one ACT point trades for 30 SAT points. The median rung that prices a test spans 3 ACT points or 100 SAT points, and on the steps priced in both currencies, the dollars per ACT point and the dollars per 30 SAT points come out identical, because they are the same step read twice.

The middle column matches the official College Board and ACT concordance exactly. The right column is the part families miss.

The two-door trap. The same rung has two doors, and colleges do not hang them at the same height. An ACT 28 rung pairs with an SAT floor anywhere from 1250 to 1320 depending on the college, and an ACT 30 rung pairs with anything from 1320 to 1400. A student holding a 1330 walks through the 30-equivalent door at some colleges and finds it locked at others, and at a single college a student can be over the floor through one test’s door while under it through the other. The strategy writes itself: check both columns on every grid, and if a retake is in order, retake whichever test sits closer to that college’s printed pair. The money on the other side is the same.

The retake math, stated plainly. If your student’s score sits within a point or two of an ACT floor, or within about 30 points of an SAT floor, a Saturday retake carries a median expected value of $8,000 over four years per rung crossed, and the registration fee for either test is about $70. The digital SAT now runs a little over two hours and is offered seven times a year, so the retake is a smaller ask than it was for earlier siblings. There is no other afternoon in the college process with that return. This compounds the lesson of our test-optional study: the colleges that keep score floors on their money are the same formula-driven colleges whose grids pay for every point.

One more reason the retake is rarely wasted: there is no dead zone in either currency. Every ACT score from 20 to 32 is a published floor somewhere in our database, and SAT floors run from 830 to 1600, with nearly every 10-point increment between 1000 and 1450 appearing as a published floor at some college. The most common ACT floors are 24, 28, and 30; the most common SAT floors are their twins, 1160, 1300, and 1200. A student moving from 21 to 22, or from 1090 to 1100, crosses a paying threshold at some colleges just as surely as a student moving from 29 to 30.

Finding 4: The cliffs at 3.0 and 3.5

Merit grids are step functions. Nothing is awarded for progress toward a rung; everything is awarded for crossing it. So it matters enormously where the rungs sit, and they are not evenly spread.

Two floors, 3.0 and 3.5, gate 503 awards between them, 44% of all GPA-gated automatic money. These are the supercliffs of American merit aid. A student at 3.49 is, at nearly two hundred colleges, one hundredth of a point from a different financial aid package, which is why the difference between a B+ and an A- in one senior-fall class can be the most expensive grading decision a teacher never knows they made. If your student is within a few hundredths of either cliff, that is where the semester’s effort belongs.

Read the fourth row too, because it is the quiet good news. Sixty-one automatic awards publish a floor of 2.5, and 306 sit at exactly 3.0. The ladder has low rungs. The B student is not shut out of automatic money; they are simply never told which colleges printed a price for them. Our scholarships-by-GPA guide sorts these directly.

Finding 5: Which GPA, and which score? The fine print that moves the number

Everything above assumes you know what number your student actually has. On the grids, that is less obvious than it sounds, in three specific ways.

Weighted or unweighted. Among automatic awards that state a policy, 57% accept a weighted GPA and 43% count only the unweighted number. A student carrying a weighted 3.7 built on honors bumps may be a 3.4 in the eyes of nearly half these grids, on the wrong side of the 3.5 supercliff while the family believes they cleared it. Before trusting any grid, ask which GPA the college recalculates, because many compute their own from the transcript and it matches neither number on the report card.

Superscore or single sitting, for each test. Among test-gated automatic awards with a stated policy, 67% superscore the SAT and 61% superscore the ACT, combining the best sections across test dates; the rest take single-sitting scores only. At a superscoring college, an early junior-year sitting costs nothing and banks sections toward the floor; at a single-sitting college, the plan is one well-prepared attempt. Same student, same scores, different strategy. And do not assume the two tests share a policy: a dozen awards in our database superscore one test but not the other, so the question has to be asked twice. As we found in our test-optional study, the answer comes from the financial aid office, in writing, not from the admissions page.

Which door your student is standing in. As Finding 3 showed, a college’s published ACT and SAT floors for the same rung are usually concordance twins but not always, and the mismatches run in both directions. A family that only ever checks the column for the test their student happened to take can miss a rung the other column would have granted. Read both columns on every grid, every time.

What this means for your family

  • Get the grid for every college on the list. Search the college’s name plus “merit scholarship chart.” At more than half our colleges the price list is published, and it converts the vague advice “grades matter” into an exact dollar figure.
  • If the score is near a floor, retake. Within a point or two on the ACT, or within about 30 points on the SAT, of any published floor, the median rung is worth $8,000 over four years against a roughly $70 registration fee, and nearly every score band in both tests is a paying threshold somewhere.
  • Triage effort by price. A test point pays roughly three times what a GPA tenth pays and takes a fraction of the time to gain. Test prep first, then GPA defense, is the order the grids themselves recommend.
  • Find your cliff. On the GPA side, 503 awards change hands at 3.0 and 3.5, and one senior-fall grade can decide it. On the test side, the crowded floors are ACT 24, 28, and 30, and SAT 1160, 1300, and 1200.
  • Check both test columns on every grid. The same rung pairs a 28 ACT with anything from a 1250 to a 1320 SAT depending on the college. Retake whichever test sits closer to that college’s printed pair; the money behind both doors is identical.
  • Ask which GPA counts. Forty-three percent of grids with a stated policy use the unweighted number, and many colleges recalculate their own. Confirm before assuming your student cleared a rung.
  • Ask about superscoring for scholarships, for each test. Sixty-seven percent of test-gated automatic awards superscore the SAT and 61% the ACT, and some colleges superscore one but not the other. If yes, sit the test early and bank sections; if no, plan one well-prepared attempt.
  • B students, get in line. Sixty-one automatic awards start at a 2.5 and 306 at a 3.0. The ladder has low rungs, and standing on one still pays.
  • Then make the deadline. All of this money still closes at the priority application deadline, usually around December 1, as documented in our first study. The best score in the world earns nothing filed in March.

Two questions counselors and parents ask

Is the SAT or the ACT better for scholarships?

Neither, by design. On 414 of the 444 test-gated automatic awards in our database, the same rung publishes both an ACT floor and an SAT floor, and the dollar value behind them is identical. The right question is which test gets your particular student over a particular college’s printed pair faster. Because the pairings vary from college to college, a student sitting between the two doors should retake the test that is closer to the floor on that specific grid.

How many SAT points equal one ACT point on merit scholarship grids?

Thirty. The pairings colleges publish on their own grids match the official concordance almost exactly at the median, and the typical test-priced rung spans 3 ACT points or 100 SAT points. So the $2,000-a-year median value of one ACT point reads as about $650 a year per 10 SAT points, and a 30-point SAT gain carries the same $8,000 four-year value as a one-point ACT gain. Individual colleges drift from the concordance by as much as 50 points in either direction, which is why the printed grid, not the conversion table, is always the final word.

Limitations

The test cell is small. Fifteen clean test-only steps is a direction, not a decimal. We report it because the direction is corroborated by the visible structure of the grids themselves, where test tiers routinely span wider dollar ranges than GPA tiers, but the $2,000 figure deserves softer confidence than the GPA figure, which rests on 75 steps.

The SAT figures are the same steps, read in the second column. Nearly every test-priced step publishes its floor in both ACT and SAT terms, so our SAT prices are not an independent sample; they are the ACT-denominated steps converted at the pairing each college itself printed. Those pairings match the official concordance at the median but vary by up to about 50 points across colleges, so the per-college value of an SAT band can sit above or below our figures. The grid on the college’s own page is the final word.

These prices describe colleges that publish ladders. Our per-increment figures come from the 231 colleges with tiered grids, which skew toward the formula-driven public universities of the South, Southwest, and Midwest documented in Finding 6 of our first study. At holistic-aid colleges, concentrated in the Northeast, there is no grid to climb and these prices do not apply.

Published criteria are not the whole criteria. All figures describe what colleges print. Where both GPA and test rise between rungs, 6 steps, we excluded the step rather than apportion the dollars. Steps where the award value did not rise were likewise excluded.

Dollar figures are per year and assume renewal. Four-year figures multiply the annual step by four, which assumes the student keeps the award. Renewal GPAs, credit-load requirements, and one-time awards were the subject of Finding 8 of our first study, and every caution there applies to these ladders too.

These 422 colleges are not a random sample of American higher education. They are the institutions we have built pages for, weighted toward the colleges families ask us about. Every figure describes our dataset, not the country, and no figure here predicts what any single college will pay your student. The grid on that college’s own website does.
