Strategic Note: Four incoming first-year students from the Nashville, Tennessee area who present outstanding academic and leadership records. Traditionally, about eight finalists are invited to interview for the four available awards.

Fisk does not consider test-optional applicants for full tuition awards, so you need scores on file. Run the math before you get too excited. Full tuition is roughly 24,600 dollars, but Fisk's total direct bill runs about 41,000 once you add mandatory fees, a room, and a meal plan. That leaves somewhere near 16,400 dollars a year still to cover, so this is a very good award that still needs a plan behind it.

Strategic Note: Tennessee families in real financial need, and the bar is a specific one. Seventy thousand in parent income is the line, and you have to clear Pell eligibility on the FAFSA, which for most families means well under that. If you qualify, you qualify. Nobody is judging your essay. The part families underestimate is the renewal GPA. A 3.0 checked every single semester is stricter than it sounds for a first-year student adjusting to college. You get one do-over and that is it.

Apply if you clear the numbers, because the Fellowship pool is drawn from the same applications and twenty more students get 30,000 dollars a year out of it.

Everyone who applies for Jeanes and does not win is automatically considered for a Hopwood award instead, so the downside of applying is a few hours of work and the upside is real money either way. Strategic Note: A very small number of qualified dependents nationwide whose home institutions certify them for Tuition Exchange or ACS Exchange and who are then selected by Sewanee through a competitive process.

Strategic Note: A genuinely small group. National Merit Finalist status runs to roughly the top one percent of PSAT takers nationally, and there is no way to backfill it if you missed the PSAT junior year. The honest read is that this award is not something you can decide to pursue as a senior. Either the PSAT already went your way or it did not. If it did, Southern is one of the schools where that credential converts directly into tuition rather than a token $2,500 stipend, and it is worth comparing against what the flagship publics in your state will offer.

Strategic Note: Metro Nashville Public Schools graduates who enroll full-time at TSU, hold at least a HOPE GPA of 3.0 or ACT 21 / SAT 1060, and are HOPE Scholarship–eligible through TSAC. If you graduated from an MNPS school and are heading to TSU, this is one of the most powerful local-to-local scholarship combinations in Tennessee — full tuition, no essay, automatic consideration.

Strategic Note: Be clear-eyed here - Trevecca named three McClurkan recipients for 2026. Three. Meeting the 28 ACT and 3.5 GPA bar only earns you the right to apply, and plenty of qualified students never get the McClurkan Day invitation. What separates finalists is not the transcript, it is a documented track record of service and leadership that a committee can see and ask about across an interview table. Apply if you clear the numbers, because the upside is full tuition and the application costs you an afternoon. Just do not build your college budget around winning it. Your realistic number at Trevecca is the Strickland or Dunning award you already qualify for automatically.

Strategic Note: Faculty and staff kids, full stop. The catch is that seats are limited and Union explicitly reserves the right to pick among applicants when demand exceeds space. That makes the October 1 deadline unusually important — this is one of the few Union awards where applying late genuinely costs you a slot rather than just paperwork. If your parent works in higher education and you did not know this existed, that is the most expensive thing on this page you have not yet acted on.

Strategic Note: High-achieving cybersecurity or IT students at UTC who intend to work for federal, state, local, or tribal government in cybersecurity roles.

Strategic Note: One top in-state student from each of Tennessee's 95 counties with at least a 3.2 UT core weighted GPA and strong community engagement — think student body president, Eagle Scout, lead volunteer, or someone with a genuine and distinctive story of service. Applying early (November 1) positions your student for the fullest consideration.

Strategic Note: Strong students who move fast. A 3.7 with a 30 ACT is a real bar at a school this size, but the tighter filter is timing. With one award per academic program, a qualified student who deposits in April beats a stronger student who waits until July. If your student is at or above the cutoff, treat the deposit date as the actual competition — not the grades.

Strategic Note: Students who already have a service track record deep enough to write three distinct essays about, and who can survive an interview with the committee. The essay prompts favor someone who has built or run something - a program, a nonprofit, an initiative - over someone who has volunteered a lot of hours. If service is genuinely the center of your life, this is the Vanderbilt award where you have the most distinct profile. If you're adding service to look good, the interview will find that out.
