Mississippi Full Tuition Scholarships

Strategic Note: Students who post a 28 or higher ACT composite (or the SAT equivalent) with at least a 3.0 high school GPA. Test prep pays for itself here: moving from a 27 to a 28 is worth $3,000 a year, or $12,000 across four years. Families should go in knowing that Pell eligibility reduces the institutional portion rather than stacking with it, so a Pell-eligible student and a full-pay student generally see the same $18,000 total.

Strategic Note: Just about half of Delta State's students receive Pell, so this is not a narrow award at all, it is close to a default for Mississippi families of modest means. If the household qualifies for Pell and the student is starting college for the first time, tuition is covered, full stop. The two things that trip families up are the FAFSA itself, which has to be filed on time every single year, and the word tuition. This does not touch housing, meals, books or fees, and room and board at Delta State runs roughly $8,700 a year, so budget for that.

Strategic Note: This is the tier most JSU-bound families actually land in, and it is also where the biggest trap sits. Heritage tops out at a 24 ACT. One more point, a 25, moves your student to Provost, which adds a room and a meal plan on top of tuition. If they are sitting at 23 or 24, a single retake is worth more than almost anything else they could do this year. And read the renewal fine print carefully, because three years of coverage on a four-year degree is a real gap that nobody mentions on a campus tour.

Strategic Note: Sixteen students a year, and the 3.5 unweighted plus 28 ACT floor is where most families get their hopes up wrongly - that is the door, not the win. Millsaps admits students with a 21 to 28 ACT middle range, so a 28 puts you at the very top of their applicant pool and the actual scholars will mostly sit above it. What separates finalists is the essay, the two letters and how you carry yourself at Scholars Weekend in February. If your student is at 28 exactly and has a genuinely strong recommendation from someone outside the classroom, this is worth the effort - the optional portfolio is where an unusual kid can stand out. If your student is at 3.5 flat with a 28 flat and a thin activity record, plan on the regular merit award and treat Premier as the lottery ticket.

Strategic Note: A very small cohort. Past Honors classes have been reported at roughly fifteen students. A 29 ACT gets you the invitation to apply, but the two essays and the MMI interview do the actual sorting, and MMI is an unusual format borrowed from medical school admissions where you rotate through short scenario stations rather than sitting for one long conversation. Almost no high school senior has done that before. Look up how MMI works and practice it, because the students who walk in cold get visibly rattled. Anyone with a 29-plus who is serious about MC should apply for both this and Select Scholars, since MC explicitly encourages doing both.

Strategic Note: Roughly the top one percent of PSAT takers in your state. If your child took the PSAT junior year and scored high enough for Semi-Finalist, this is essentially guaranteed money once they are admitted. If they did not, there is no application to submit and no way to earn this one after the fact.

Strategic Note: The runner-up outcome from the same application that awards the Centennial, so there is no separate strategy — you apply once and the panel decides which you get. The practical difference is housing and food, which at The W is real money. Students who land here interviewed well and cleared the academic bar but did not quite top the field. Since the entry requirements are identical to the Centennial, anyone eligible for one should apply knowing this is the likelier result.

Strategic Note: Community college students who planned the transfer from the start. The AA completion requirement is the real filter here — a lot of students bank 50 or 60 credits and move on without the degree in hand, and those students get nothing from this award no matter how good their grades were. The 3.25 is demanding but reachable for anyone taking community college seriously. If your student is at a Mississippi community college right now and thinking about MVSU, the single most valuable piece of advice is to sit down with an advisor and make sure every remaining course counts toward finishing the AA, not just toward credit hours.

Strategic Note: Valedictorians and salutatorians, full stop. If that is your student, this is close to the best value on the list, because the competition pool is tiny compared with the Presidential. The mistake families make is assuming the honor is automatically on file somewhere. It is not. Tougaloo has to see the rank on a transcript and see an application, and if the high school does not print rank on transcripts you will need a letter from the counselor confirming it. Sort that out early.

Strategic Note: The gate here is not Ole Miss. It is the PSAT taken in October of junior year, before most families are thinking about scholarships at all. If you cleared your state's Semifinalist cutoff, this is close to automatic and it covers full tuition, which for a non-resident is the largest award on the board. If you did not, there is no essay and no appeal that gets you in. Everything was decided by a test most students treat as practice.

Strategic Note: This is a very competitive Honors College scholarship. It is most realistic for top incoming Honors students with strong grades, high test scores, leadership, curiosity, strong essays, and a good interview/application package.

Strategic Note: Fifteen students a year, and that number is the whole story. A 30 ACT only buys you the right to apply. What separates finalists is the essay and the video, and most applicants underinvest badly in the video because it feels unfamiliar. Treat it as the real interview. Carey publishes rubrics for both the essay and the video, which is unusually generous, so read them before you write a word. Realistically this is a reach even for a 32 or 33, because the pool is small and the committee is weighing fit and service alongside scores.
