🧭 How Bates Is Different (Read This Before Anything Else)

Bates doesn’t hand out merit scholarships or athletic scholarships. Not small ones, not for a perfect GPA, not for anything. Every dollar of Bates aid is based on what your family can afford, and Bates promises to cover 100% of the gap between its price and what the financial aid formula says you can pay. So the real question at Bates isn’t “will my kid earn a scholarship?” It’s “what will our family contribution look like?” Run the MyinTuition estimator before you fall in love with the place.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Bates (Read This First)

  • Ask for aid when you apply, or you lose the chance. Your student has to check the financial aid box on the admission application. Bates won’t consider anyone for its grant money after admission decisions go out.
  • The aid paperwork is due with the application. The CSS Profile, tax returns through IDOC, and the FAFSA are due November 15 for Early Decision I and January 10 for Early Decision II and Regular Decision. These aren’t spring deadlines.
  • Both parents file, even after a divorce. Bates counts the noncustodial parent’s income too. A parent who simply won’t pay doesn’t get you a waiver; Bates only waives this with third-party documentation of serious circumstances.
  • Watch for the sibling cliff. If an older sibling is in college now, your parent contribution can roughly double the year that sibling graduates. Bates says this outright, so budget for it.
  • Early Decision is where most of the class comes from. In the most recent cycle Bates admitted 318 Early Decision applicants for a first-year class of 493, about two-thirds of the class. ED is binding, but Bates says it doesn’t change the size of your aid package.
  • Test scores never touch the money. Bates has been test-optional since 1984, and since there’s no merit aid, sending or skipping scores has zero effect on what you pay.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. Bates College is test-optional for admission, but scholarships can work differently (see the next question).

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Bates College? No merit or athletic scholarships, so test scores never change the money. Bates has been test-optional since 1984 and superscores both tests.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 31-34; SAT: 1325-1510.

Average net price? About $27,390/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? No. It is a private school, so everyone pays the same rate.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Bates College: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in November 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Bates College has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $1,900 to $4,700 more than the total below.

✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

All students: billed cost per year
$94,560
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $73,760
Housing & meals (typical) $20,800
Total billed cost $94,560

Average federal net price: $27,390 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

One Price for Everyone

Bates charges a single fee that bundles tuition, housing, and food, and it’s the same whether you live in Maine or Mississippi. There’s no out-of-state premium to waive and no regional exchange to chase. What actually moves your price is the need-based aid offer, so the most useful thing you can do is run Bates’ MyinTuition cost estimator with your real numbers.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Bates College

What is Bates’ “single fee” for 2026-27?
It’s $94,560: $73,760 for tuition plus $20,800 for food and housing. Bates bills it as one number instead of listing a dozen separate fees, which makes it easier to compare against other schools’ full direct cost.

What costs are not in the single fee?
First-year students pay a one-time $475 fee, though Bates adds grant to cover it for students on need-based aid. The student health plan runs $2,352 a year unless you show other coverage. Bates also estimates about $900 for books and supplies, $1,000 for personal expenses, and $250 to $1,150 for travel. Those last three don’t show up on the bill but are part of the budget Bates uses to figure your aid.

What do families actually pay at Bates?
The federal average net price is about $27,390 a year after grants. But that average hides a huge spread. Here’s what federally aided students paid by family income, according to College Scorecard:

  • $0 to $30,000: about $1,899
  • $30,001 to $48,000: about $7,617
  • $48,001 to $75,000: about $9,606
  • $75,001 to $110,000: about $21,363
  • Over $110,000: about $46,685

For a lot of middle-income families, Bates can cost less than an out-of-state public flagship. Families who don’t qualify for aid pay the full single fee.

Is Bates cheaper for Maine residents?
The sticker price is the same for everyone because Bates is private. Maine families can sometimes pick up a Maine State Grant on top of Bates aid by filing the FAFSA, which you’ll see listed in the scholarship section below.

How much will my student have to borrow?
Bates meets full need with grants, a work job, and a small loan. Bates puts no more than $3,000 of student loan in a package each year, and students who stick to its recommendation finish with about $12,000 in federal loans. Federal rules allow first-years to borrow up to $5,500, but that extra is optional. In the class of 2025, only 23% of graduates borrowed at all.

Does aid follow my student on study abroad or Short Term?
Yes. Aid works for approved semester and year programs, up to what it would have been on campus. Bates also gives aid for extra-cost Short Term courses in April and May, which is how a student on aid can take a four-week course in another country.

When will the 2027-28 price come out?
Bates usually posts next year’s costs in May. Expect a modest increase each year, and know that your aid gets recalculated every year from your updated CSS Profile and FAFSA.

📅 Bates Aid Timeline (Simple Version)

  • November 1: QuestBridge Finalists send Bates financial aid materials.
  • November 15: CSS Profile, IDOC tax documents, and FAFSA due for Early Decision I.
  • January 10: Same paperwork due for Early Decision II and Regular Decision.
  • March 1: Summer Research Fellowship and the first round of Purposeful Work internship funding (current students).
  • May 1: Continuing students renew aid every year.

Parent rule of thumb: the aid deadline is the admission deadline. Have last year’s tax returns handy before your student hits submit.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at Bates College

Bates has no automatic merit scholarships. There’s no GPA cutoff, no test-score tier, and no “Dean’s Scholarship” waiting in the admission letter. Instead, Bates looks at your family’s finances through the CSS Profile and promises to cover 100% of your calculated need for all four years. If you’re a Maine resident, any state grants you qualify for will show up in the cards below.

This institution does not offer designated Automatic Merit scholarships at this time.

Note: A strong student who doesn’t qualify for need-based aid will pay the full single fee at Bates. If merit money is a must for your family, Bates belongs on the list next to schools that do offer it, not in place of them.

Need-Based Aid FAQs (Bates College)

Does Bates give any merit or athletic scholarships?
No. Bates puts its entire aid budget into need-based grants, more than $48 million a year, and nearly half of students get aid.

So how does Bates decide how much aid we get?
Bates uses the College Board’s Institutional Methodology. It looks at income, assets, family size, and how many kids are in college at once, then subtracts your expected contribution from the full cost. Bates fills the rest with a grant, a campus job of about seven hours a week, and a small loan of no more than $3,000 a year.

Do test scores or grades change our aid?
No. Bates says flat out that good grades and sports don’t earn more aid. Scores are optional for admission and play no part in the money.

Will applying Early Decision cost us aid?
Bates says no. An ED package is comparable to what you’d get in Regular Decision. It’s based on estimates and prior-year taxes, then checked against your current-year return.

Is the aid good for all four years?
Yes, for eight semesters, as long as you reapply by May 1 each year and stay in good academic standing. The amount can change if your income changes or a sibling graduates, but Bates still meets full need each year.

What if our finances change after we get the offer?
You can ask for a review with documentation. Job loss, a parent’s death, big medical bills, and one-time income all count. Offers from other colleges and parents refusing to pay don’t.

What Maine state aid shows up here?
Maine residents may qualify for the Maine State Grant through the FAFSA. Future teachers can also look at Educators for Maine, a forgivable loan that pairs with Bates’ Teacher Education minor.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Bates has no competitive merit scholarships: no full-ride essay contest, no finalist weekend, no named presidential award. The one “big package” route is the QuestBridge National College Match, which is built for high-achieving students from low-income families and covers the full direct cost with no family contribution.

✅ How Money Combines at Bates

Aid Type Works With Bates Aid? Bates Parent Translation
Bates Grant It’s the base Your need-based grant. Everything else fits around it.
QuestBridge Match Replaces The Match Scholarship is the whole package, so there’s nothing to stack it with.
Outside scholarships Yes, generously They knock out the loan and work job first, or lower your family share. Bates only trims its grant if total grant aid passes the full cost.
Parent employer tuition benefits Partly They reduce your need, but they can’t replace your expected family contribution.
Summer research and internship funding Separate Paid for summer work outside the school-year package. Details are in Hidden Gems below.

Here’s the kitchen-table version: at Bates, chasing outside scholarships actually pays off. Because they replace loans and work first, every outside dollar your student wins is a dollar your family doesn’t borrow or a shift your kid doesn’t have to work.

❓ QuestBridge and Competitive Aid FAQs

What does the QuestBridge Match cover at Bates?
For 2026-27 the package is $95,035 in grants plus a $2,500 work-study job. That means $0 from parents, $0 from the student, and no loans. It covers tuition, housing, food, and fees; travel isn’t included.

What are the QuestBridge deadlines?
Students apply to QuestBridge in early fall of senior year. Finalists who rank Bates send Bates’ financial aid materials by November 1, and Match results come out December 1.

Is a QuestBridge Match binding?
Yes. A matched student commits to Bates and withdraws other applications, so only rank Bates if you’d be thrilled to go.

What if my student is a Finalist but doesn’t match with Bates?
They aren’t out of the running. Finalists who ranked Bates move into Regular Decision automatically, and students can switch to Early Decision II through QuestBridge. Bates still meets full need either way.

Does Bates offer National Merit or athletic scholarships?
No. Bates is a Division III NESCAC school with no athletic scholarships, and it doesn’t fund merit awards of any kind. A National Merit award from a company or outside sponsor would count as an outside scholarship and replace loans or work first.

What should students prepare if they’re aiming for QuestBridge?
Strong essays and a clear activity list matter most. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help organize both.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Bates Pays for Summers

Bates doesn’t have hidden merit money, but it does have something a lot of families miss: real cash for summer research and internships. That matters if your student is on aid, because an unpaid internship usually means losing the summer paycheck.

  1. First year: get to know professors and ask about summer research by winter break.
  2. Apply for a $5,000 Summer Research Fellowship by March 1 (open to first-years through juniors).
  3. Sophomore or junior year: land an internship offer, then request up to $5,000 in Purposeful Work funding in the March round.
  4. On aid without health insurance? Enroll in the Bates plan and ask for the health insurance grant.

Parent translation: the earlier your student lines up a mentor or an offer, the better the odds. These go to students who plan ahead, not just top GPAs.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These aren’t automatic and most need their own application. They don’t replace your Bates grant, and they can make a big difference for students on aid. Outside money like Yellow Ribbon benefits for veterans shows up here too.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

How many Summer Research Fellowships does Bates give?
About 25 to 30 a year at $5,000 each, for 8 to 10 weeks of full-time research with a professor. Named funds cover the sciences, humanities, politics, economics, and research in Asia, so it isn’t just for lab majors.

Who can get Purposeful Work internship funding?
Sophomores and juniors who already have an internship offer. Awards go up to $5,000, and students who haven’t been funded before get priority. Rounds open with a March 1 deadline and continue into April.

Does Bates help with health insurance costs?
Yes, for students on aid. If your student has no other coverage and enrolls in the $2,352 Bates plan, Bates covers all or part of the premium depending on your family contribution.

Is there help for veterans and military families?
Bates is a Yellow Ribbon school with no cap on the number of students. It adds up to $17,500 a year beyond what the Post-9/11 GI Bill pays toward tuition.

Do outside scholarships still matter if Bates meets full need?
Yes, more than at most schools. Outside awards replace loans and work first, so they lower what your student owes after graduation instead of just shrinking the Bates grant.

Honors at Bates College

Bates doesn’t have an Honors College, and it doesn’t have honors scholarships. What it has is an Honors Program for seniors. It’s an academic distinction, not a money program, and students don’t apply to it from high school.

  • Who: Seniors nominated through their major department. Interested students talk to their advisor by the end of junior year.
  • What: A two-semester thesis (or a creative project in some majors) through fall and winter of senior year.
  • The twist: An oral exam with a committee that includes a professor from another department and an outside expert from another college.

Honors Scholarships & Fellowships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

There are no honors-based awards at Bates right now. If Bates adds any, they’ll appear above automatically.

Why this still matters: Most Bates majors require a senior thesis or capstone anyway. That means a large share of students graduate with a real research project on their resume, honors or not, which is a big deal for grad school and fellowship applications.
Where the “Honors-Level” Money Actually Lives
  • Summer Research Fellowships: $5,000 to do research with a professor, open to first-years through juniors.
  • Purposeful Work funding: Up to $5,000 for sophomores and juniors with an internship offer.
  • Fulbright and national fellowships: Bates has been a Fulbright top producer for more than a decade, with a fellowships office to help.

Honors FAQs (Bates College)

Is there an Honors College my student applies to with their application?
No. There’s no separate honors admission and no honors dorm. Honors is something students earn in senior year.

Does Honors come with a scholarship?
No. All Bates aid is need-based, so Honors is recognition on the diploma, not money.

Is a senior thesis required?
For most majors, yes. Honors is the more intense version, with a longer timeline and an outside examiner.

What about Latin honors?
Those are separate and based on GPA. Summa, magna, and cum laude go to roughly the top 2%, next 8%, and next 15% of the class.

⭐ College Specialty

Bates is a small liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine, with about 1,700 students and a 9-to-1 student-faculty ratio. It’s the kind of place where professors know your kid by name and expect them to do real research before they graduate. It also has a long streak of doing things its own way. Bates was the first coed college in New England, and it went test-optional back in 1984, decades before it was trendy.

What Makes Bates Different: Short Term
Bates runs two regular semesters plus a four-week “Short Term” from late April into May. Students take one course and go all in. That might be geology fieldwork in Colorado, Shakespeare in London, marine economics on the Maine coast, or a course in Rwanda or Vietnam. Students on aid can get help with extra-cost Short Term courses, so this isn’t just for families who can pay their way.
  • Economics, Politics, and Psychology: These are where the most Bates degrees land, and they feed into the Stangle research funds for politics, economics, and law.
  • Neuroscience: A standout program with its own endowed summer research money and a new seminar series that brings in national researchers.
  • Engineering: Students can earn an engineering degree at Bates, or do a combined plan with Columbia, Dartmouth, Case Western, RPI, or WashU.
  • Digital and Computational Studies: An interdisciplinary major that blends computing with the questions liberal arts students actually care about.
  • Fellowships: Bates has been a Fulbright top producer every year for more than a decade, and it’s been the No. 1 producer twice in recent years.
  • Lewiston as a classroom: About half of students take a community-engaged course each year through the Harward Center, working with schools and nonprofits in town.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? Bates is a “no games” school. There’s no merit money to chase and no scholarship weekend to win, just one promise: if Bates admits your student, it covers every dollar of need the formula finds, for all four years. For lower- and middle-income families, that can make a $94,560 sticker price cost less than a state school. For families who won’t qualify for aid, it’s full price, period.

So the work at Bates looks different. Run the cost estimator early. Check the aid box on the application and get the CSS Profile in on time. Know that Early Decision is where most of the class comes from. Once your student is there, go after the summer research and internship money that turns a liberal arts degree into a resume. If you get those right, Bates can be one of the best values in New England.
