📊 Admissions Snapshot
- Acceptance Rate: ~7%
- Middle 50% ACT: 33-35
- Middle 50% SAT: 1470-1540
- Average GPA: N/A
Bowdoin doesn’t play the merit scholarship game at all. There are no automatic awards, no GPA tiers, and no scholarship weekends. Instead, the college looks at what your family can actually pay, covers the rest with grants, and doesn’t put loans in the package. It has worked that way since 2008.
- Need-blind, even for international students. Asking for aid doesn’t count against a first-year applicant.
- Roughly half the students get Bowdoin grant money. In 2025-26, the average need-based grant was about $70,968.
- About one in four aided incoming students pays $0. That means no parent contribution and no student contribution.
- Test scores are truly optional. Bowdoin was the first college in the country to drop the requirement, back in 1969. About half of the newest class didn’t send scores.

📌 Bowdoin College at a Glance
- No merit money means no “bonus” for high stats. A 1550 SAT earns the same scholarship as no score at all. The only exception is a $1,000 a year award for National Merit Finalists who pick Bowdoin first.
- Need-blind has two exceptions. Waitlisted and transfer applicants may be admitted need-aware. Transfers who don’t apply for aid when they’re admitted are never considered later, and international transfers get no need-based aid.
- The ED2 aid deadline is the same day as the application (January 5). Regular Decision aid forms are due February 1, and QuestBridge aid materials are due November 1. Missing them can limit your aid.
- “Meets full need” does not mean “free.” Students are still expected to earn about $2,300 in summer and $2,400 from a campus job, and families cover indirect costs like books and travel (about $2,500+).
- Your aid is recalculated every single year. A sibling graduating, a raise, or an inheritance can lower it. Divorced or separated parents each file a CSS Profile.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Bowdoin College: 2026–2027 Rates
Figures verified against official sources in November 2026.
📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Bowdoin College has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $1,900 to $4,800 more than the total below.
✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.
| Tuition & mandatory fees | $74,968 |
| Housing & meals (typical) | $20,432 |
| Total billed cost | $95,400 |
Average federal net price: $22,228 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
Bowdoin builds your aid around the full cost of attendance, about $97,900 for 2026-27 once you add books, personal expenses, and travel to the $95,400 bill. Bowdoin subtracts what the CSS Profile says your family can pay, plus a $2,400 campus job expectation, and fills the gap with grants. There are no loans in the package. What’s left for your family is the parent share, the student’s summer earnings (about $2,300, waived for families under $75,000), and day-to-day indirect costs. Students from Maine or Vermont must also apply for their state grant, which Bowdoin counts toward meeting need.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Bowdoin College
Is Bowdoin cheaper for Maine residents?
No. Bowdoin is private, so tuition is the same for everyone. Maine families can still pick up the Maine State Grant (up to $2,500 a year, FAFSA by May 1), and Vermont residents may be able to use their Vermont grant at Bowdoin. Bowdoin requires eligible students from both states to apply.
What do families at different incomes actually pay?
Bowdoin publishes its own medians for aided first-years who entered in Fall 2023: about $4,700 for incomes up to $48,000, $9,100 for $48,001 to $75,000, $17,500 for $75,001 to $110,000, $23,400 for $110,001 to $150,000, $36,834 for $150,001 to $200,000, and $47,250 above $200,000. Families who don’t qualify for aid pay the full cost.
Why does the federal net price above look different from Bowdoin’s table?
The federal number is an average across aided students for an older year, while Bowdoin’s table uses medians by income band. Neither one is your number. Bowdoin’s net price calculator and quick six-question estimator are the best way to see your own estimate.
How much is my student expected to contribute?
About $2,300 from summer work and $2,400 from a campus job, roughly $4,700 a year. Campus jobs pay $15.30 to $17.55 an hour, usually 5 to 10 hours a week. Outside scholarships can cover this share instead, and students from families under $75,000 have the summer piece replaced with grant money.
Is health insurance included?
Not in the totals above. Every student is auto-enrolled in Bowdoin’s plan ($4,442 for 2026-27) unless you waive it with comparable coverage. Students on aid who need the plan can ask Student Aid to cover it with an extra aid credit.
Will our aid stay the same for four years?
Probably not. Bowdoin re-figures need every year from new CSS Profile and FAFSA filings. Aid usually goes up when a sibling starts college and down when one finishes. Students on aid need at least a 2.000 cumulative GPA.
Can aid be used for study abroad?
Yes. Bowdoin lets students take their aid with them for approved off-campus study that earns Bowdoin credit. Meet with a Student Aid counselor before committing to a program.

📅 Bowdoin Aid Deadlines (Simple Version)
- November 1: QuestBridge Match aid materials.
- November 15: Early Decision 1 (CSS Profile + FAFSA due the same day as the application).
- January 5: Early Decision 2 (again, same day as the application).
- February 1: Regular Decision aid forms.
- February 15 each year after: Returning students re-apply.
- May 1: FAFSA deadline for the Maine State Grant (Maine residents).
Parent rule of thumb: file the CSS Profile and FAFSA with the application, not after. The forms open October 1.
Automatic Merit Scholarships at Bowdoin College
This institution does not offer designated Automatic Merit scholarships at this time.
Note: Because money at Bowdoin follows need, the most important “application” is the CSS Profile. A strong student who skips it gets nothing, while a family that files gets a full-need package.
Automatic Aid: FAQs (Bowdoin College)
Does Bowdoin give automatic merit scholarships?
No. All Bowdoin aid is need-based. The college has never run a merit tier system.
Will high test scores earn my student more money?
No. Scores only matter for admission, and even there they’re optional. Bowdoin superscores the SAT and ACT if you choose to send them.
What is guaranteed if my student gets in?
A package that meets 100% of calculated need, made of grants and a campus job, with no loans. In the most recent admitted class, need-based Bowdoin scholarships ranged from $3,820 to $98,800.
Is there anything automatic at all?
Two things. Students from families under $75,000 have their $2,300 summer earnings expectation replaced with grant money, and every student gets a MacBook Pro, iPad mini, and Apple Pencil to keep. Both are covered in Hidden Gems below.
We live in Maine. Do we get anything extra?
Maine residents who file the FAFSA by May 1 can get the Maine State Grant (up to $2,500 a year). Bowdoin requires eligible Maine students to apply, and it counts toward meeting need.
Should we bother filing if we think we earn too much?
Run Bowdoin’s net price calculator first. Plenty of families earning $150,000 to $200,000 still qualify for grants at a school with a $95,400 bill.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)
✅ How Money Stacks at Bowdoin
| Aid Type | Stacks? | Parent Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Bowdoin Need-Based Scholarship | Base layer | This is the big one. It fills whatever gap is left after your family share and the campus job. |
| QuestBridge Match | Replaces | Covers every billed cost for eight semesters. Your family still handles books, travel, and personal costs. |
| Bowdoin National Merit ($1,000/yr) | Yes | Bowdoin says it does not reduce need-based scholarship. Small, but truly extra. |
| Outside Scholarships | Yes, up to the full cost | Bowdoin only trims its own grant if outside money plus other resources go past the full cost of attendance. Until then, it lowers what your family pays. |
| Pell, FSEOG, Maine or Vermont State Grant | Part of the package | Counted toward meeting need, so they shift who pays the gap rather than shrinking your family share. |
| Athletic Scholarships | None | Bowdoin plays in the NESCAC and awards no athletic scholarships. Recruited athletes get the same need-based aid as everyone else. |
If your student is hunting for a big merit prize, Bowdoin isn’t the place. Its pitch is the opposite: admit the student first, then make the money work based on what the family can pay. For a middle-income family, that often beats a merit offer elsewhere. Run the numbers before you decide.
❓ Competitive Scholarship FAQs (Bowdoin)
How does the QuestBridge Match work at Bowdoin?
QuestBridge Finalists who rank Bowdoin and match get aid covering all direct costs (tuition, fees, housing, food) for eight semesters, with no loans. Bowdoin’s aid materials are due November 1. Finalists who don’t match move to Regular Decision automatically, and can switch to ED1 or ED2 by emailing Bowdoin.
Does Bowdoin sponsor National Merit Scholarships?
Yes, a small one. Finalists who name Bowdoin as their first choice get $1,000 a year regardless of need. National Merit Foundation Scholars get $2,500 in year one, then $1,000 a year after that.
Does the National Merit award reduce our need-based aid?
Bowdoin says no. For students who qualify for need-based aid, it does not reduce Bowdoin scholarship eligibility.
Does the Arts Supplement or an athletic recruitment come with money?
No. Both can help in admissions, but neither carries a scholarship. All Bowdoin aid is need-based.
Are outside scholarships worth chasing?
At Bowdoin, yes. Its policy is to let students benefit from outside scholarships as much as possible, so they mostly lower what your family pays instead of disappearing into a reduced grant.
What should students prepare?
The CSS Profile and FAFSA on time matter more than any essay here. For outside scholarships, families can use our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder.

Honors at Bowdoin College
Bowdoin doesn’t have an honors college or a separate honors program, and there’s no honors scholarship. At a college of about 1,900 students with an 8 to 1 student-faculty ratio, small seminars and close work with professors are simply how everyone learns.
- Departmental honors: Seniors can earn honors in their major by completing an honors project, usually a year-long independent study with a faculty advisor.
- Latin honors: Awarded at graduation based on GPA, capped at the top 20 percent of the class.
- No separate application in high school: Nothing extra to file for honors as an applicant.
Honors Scholarships & Fellowships
This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.
Bowdoin currently has no honors-linked scholarships. If that changes, they’ll appear above automatically.
- Summer research fellowships: 180 students in 2026, many working one-on-one with faculty on projects that later become honors theses.
- Kent Island field station: The Irma Cheatham fellowship paid $6,000 in 2026, plus $1,000 for students on aid, for research in the Bay of Fundy.
- Graduate scholarships: More than $400,000 a year for seniors and alumni headed to graduate or medical school.
Honors: FAQs (Bowdoin College)
Does Bowdoin have an honors college?
No. Honors at Bowdoin happens inside each major, through a senior honors project.
Is there an honors scholarship?
No. All Bowdoin aid is need-based, so honors standing doesn’t change your package.
Who can do an honors project?
Seniors in good standing, with approval from their department. Some programs review proposals competitively and limit how many projects they accept each year.
Is it worth doing?
For students thinking about graduate school, usually yes. A year of independent research with a professor is exactly what graduate programs and fellowship committees look for.

⭐ College Specialty
Bowdoin is a small liberal arts college on the midcoast of Maine, about 30 minutes north of Portland. It’s one of the most selective colleges in the country. What makes it different from other top liberal arts schools is its location: few colleges use the ocean, the Arctic, and the Maine woods as classrooms the way Bowdoin does.
Government and Economics: These two have been the most popular majors at Bowdoin for years, feeding students into law school, public policy, finance, and consulting. Government and Legal Studies is the single largest major on campus.
- Coastal and environmental science: The Schiller Coastal Studies Center on Orr’s Island gives biology, environmental studies, and earth and oceanographic science students a working marine lab, plus a field station on Kent Island in the Bay of Fundy.
- Arctic studies: The Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum, named for two alumni explorers, now lives in the new Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies, and students still join research trips north.
- Sciences and math: Biology, mathematics, computer science, neuroscience, and biochemistry are all among the top declared majors.
- AI and the liberal arts: A $50 million gift from Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings, Class of 1983, launched the Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity in 2025, adding faculty and student research funding across fields.
- Research for everyone: More than 200 students a year do funded research with faculty, which is unusually high for a liberal arts college.
