📊 Admissions Snapshot

  • Acceptance Rate: ~100%
  • Middle 50% ACT: N/A
  • Middle 50% SAT: N/A
  • Average GPA: N/A
📝 Why the Snapshot Shows “N/A”: WilmU Is Open Admission

Wilmington University accepts students who have finished high school or a GED, so there is no admit rate or test score range to report. SAT and ACT scores are not required. If your student has them, they can skip the math and English placement tests (a 480 Reading and Writing or 530 Math on the SAT does it). Two groups must send scores anyway: athletes, because the NCAA requires it, and homeschooled students. A few education programs also want a 3.0 GPA over the last two years of high school, or the program chair’s sign-off.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Wilmington University (Read This First)

  • There is no automatic merit and no WilmU need-based grant. WilmU says so on its own Net Price Calculator page. The low tuition is the discount. Every other WilmU dollar comes through one scholarship application.
  • The scholarship deadline is in summer, not December. Last cycle it was June 1 for fall and Nov 1 for spring. Most awards last one year, so your student reapplies every cycle.
  • An unpaid bill blocks scholarships. Every WilmU award requires a 2.5 GPA and a billing account with no balance carried over from a past semester. Stay on a payment plan and keep it current.
  • Part-time means smaller federal loans starting fall 2026. WilmU’s cost-of-attendance sheet warns that loans are now cut for students who are not full-time. STAR also requires 12 credits every fall and spring.
  • The FAFSA date on the card is Delaware’s, not WilmU’s. May 17 is the state deadline for ScIP and the career scholarships. Miss it and the state money is gone even though WilmU never asked for an early FAFSA.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. Wilmington University is test-optional for admission, but scholarships can work differently (see the next question).

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Wilmington University? WilmU does not use SAT or ACT for admission or for any of its own scholarships. Scores only exempt students from placement tests, and athletes and homeschoolers must submit them. Delaware's Hebner award is the one place a 1290 SAT matters.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: N/A; SAT: N/A.

Average net price? About $15,644/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? No. It is a private school, so everyone pays the same rate.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Wilmington University: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Wilmington University has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $400 to $900 more than the total below.

✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

All students: billed cost per year
$18,810
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $13,290
Housing & meals (typical) $5,520
Total billed cost $18,810

Average federal net price: $15,644 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

🏠 There Are No Dorms: What the “Housing & Meals” Line Means

WilmU has no residence halls, and nothing on that housing line is billed. The figure is WilmU’s own estimate of what it costs a dependent student to live at home for two four-month semesters ($690 a month). Federal aid uses it to set how much a student can borrow. A student renting an apartment on their own can be budgeted much higher. The tuition line assumes 30 credits at $439, plus $120 in registration and technology fees.

📍 Where Your Student Takes Classes Changes the Price

For 2026-27, undergraduate tuition is $439 a credit at New Castle, Brandywine, and online, and $380 a credit at Dover. Active-duty service members pay $250 a credit (not guard, reserves, or family). There is no in-state or out-of-state difference at all.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Wilmington University

Do out-of-state students pay more at Wilmington University?
No. WilmU charges the same per-credit rate to every undergraduate, whether your student lives in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Maryland. A family from out of state is not paying a premium the way they would at a public university.

Why is the average net price higher than tuition?
Because the federal net price counts more than tuition. It includes books, transportation, and that living allowance, then subtracts grants. With little WilmU grant money in the mix, the average family pays about $15,644 a year all-in, even though tuition alone is about $13,290.

Is the Dover campus really cheaper?
Yes, $380 a credit versus $439, which is about $1,770 less over a 30-credit year. Not every program runs fully at Dover, so check that your student’s major is offered there before building a plan around it, and ask how a schedule that mixes locations is billed.

Can our student use the Academic Common Market at WilmU?
No. The Academic Common Market only discounts public colleges, and WilmU is private. It doesn’t need it anyway, since WilmU already charges everyone the same rate.

What does going part-time do to financial aid?
Starting fall 2026, WilmU’s cost-of-attendance sheet says federal loans are reduced for students who are not enrolled full-time. Delaware’s ScIP and career scholarships also require full-time enrollment. Part-time works at WilmU, but it shrinks the aid package.

What else should we budget beyond tuition?
WilmU’s own aid budget assumes about $200 per course for books and supplies and $175 a month for transportation. A few science, nursing, and culinary courses also carry lab fees of $20 to $120. None of this is billed by WilmU except the lab fees.

📅 WilmU Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • Dec 1: Delaware’s state scholarship portal opens (ScIP, Hebner, Career-Based, Educator Support).
  • Early February: WilmU’s own scholarship application opens (Feb 10 last cycle).
  • Feb 26: Hebner deadline for Delaware seniors with a 3.0 and 1290 SAT.
  • May 17: Delaware’s need-based and career scholarships close, and the FAFSA must be in by the same day.
  • June 1: WilmU’s fall scholarship deadline (last cycle). Spring awards close Nov 1.

Parent rule of thumb: at WilmU the state money closes before the college money does. Get the Delaware forms done in spring, then do the WilmU application before June.

Automatic Scholarships at Wilmington University

WilmU does not hand out automatic merit based on GPA or test scores. What you’ll find here are guaranteed discounts tied to a pathway: future teachers from Delaware high schools, SEED graduates from Delaware Tech, and graduates of partner community colleges. If your student fits the box and files the paperwork, the money is theirs. Delaware state aid for residents shows up here too.

Start with your state. The awards in this first group come from the state, not the college. They are decided by residency and the FAFSA, and they stack on top of whatever automatic merit award the college gives below. If you live out of state, use the toggle above and these will step aside.

Who Actually Wins
Most winners: A very small group defined by a parent's service and death, not by grades or income. For a WilmU student the real question is whether the major exists at UD, DSU, or Delaware Tech, because that decides full versus prorated.
One award, not a pile. Colleges apply your student's single best automatic award. Automatic scholarships almost never stack with each other, though some stack with housing, departmental, or outside money. The stacking notes on each card tell you which.

Stacking & Combining
WilmU does not publish a stacking rule for this award. It is a rate discount, so Pell, Delaware state awards, and outside scholarships sit on top of it as long as total aid stays under the cost of attendance.

💡
Strategic Detail
WilmU's scholarship list says up to $7,196 and its guidelines page says about $7,730 for a full degree, both figured on older rates. At the 2026-27 rate of $439 a credit, 15% across a 120-credit degree works out to roughly $7,900. Course fees and books are not covered. Some College of Education programs also require a 3.0 GPA over the last two years of high school for admission, or program chair approval.
🕵

Strategic Detail
Half tuition only; fees and books are not covered. Full-time (12 or more credits) is required every fall and spring, and dropping below 12 credits mid-semester ends the award. Summer counts with 6 or more credits. Delaware's 2025-26 scholarship compendium lists a 3.5 GPA in one place and 3.25 in another; WilmU's own guidelines say 3.25.
🕵

💡
Strategic Detail
WilmU's scholarship list caps this at $4,500 total; an older WilmU partner page says up to $5,000. Partner schools are listed in the Intent to Enroll form's drop-down, so confirm your community college is on it before counting on this.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Community college graduates who planned the transfer ahead of time and filed the intent form. Part-time students qualify too, which matters at a school where many students work.
Data last verified Oct 31, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Note: Test scores play no part in any of these. The only place an SAT matters for a WilmU student is Delaware’s Hebner award, and that one is state money.

Automatic Scholarships: FAQs (Wilmington University)

Does Wilmington University give automatic merit scholarships?
No. WilmU states that it offers no need-based institutional aid and does not automatically award merit. Its low per-credit tuition is the main discount, and the awards above are pathway programs, not GPA tiers.

How much is the Aspiring Teachers Scholarship worth?
It takes 15% off every tuition credit for the whole bachelor’s degree. At 2026-27 rates that’s roughly $7,900 over 120 credits. WilmU’s own pages quote $7,196 and $7,730, both based on older rates. It covers tuition only, not fees or books.

Who qualifies for Aspiring Teachers?
Students who graduate from a Delaware high school, enroll within 12 months, and major in early childhood (Birth-2), elementary (K-6), or middle-level (6-8) education. File the Intent to Enroll form before starting, and keep a 2.5 at WilmU.

How does the STAR Scholarship work with SEED?
SEED covers tuition at Delaware Tech for eligible Delaware students. Finish the associate degree there with a 3.25 or better, start at WilmU within six months, and STAR pays half of WilmU tuition. Your student must stay full-time and keep a 3.0.

Can out-of-state students get any of these?
The Partner Transfer Scholarship is open to graduates of WilmU’s partner community colleges, including out-of-state ones listed on the intent form. Aspiring Teachers, STAR, and the state awards are for Delaware students.

Do these renew every year?
Yes, as long as your student keeps the GPA: 2.5 for Aspiring Teachers and Partner Transfer, 3.0 for STAR. They don’t reapply each year, unlike most WilmU scholarships.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Wilmington University doesn’t have a big-name flagship scholarship with interviews and finalist weekends. Instead, it has one online scholarship application that screens your student for a list of donor and university awards, mostly in the $1,000 to $5,000 range, and mostly for one year at a time.

✅ What WilmU’s Scholarship Money Looks Like

Award Type Typical Size Parent Translation
General awards (one application) $2,000 to $5,000, one year Apply every cycle. Winning once doesn’t carry over to next year.
Dean’s Merit (one per college) $5,000, one year Requires a 4.0. Ask whether a high school GPA counts in year one.
Neighborhood Scholarship Full tuition, four years Real money, but only for William Penn High School seniors.
Athletics (NCAA Division II) Usually partial Handled by coaches, not the scholarship application.
Federal and Delaware aid Pell, ScIP, career awards The biggest pieces for most families. FAFSA and the state form by May 17.

Every WilmU scholarship has the same floor: a 2.5 cumulative GPA, no academic integrity record, and a billing account with no balance carried over from a past semester. Graduate students apply through the same system, so the bigger general awards draw a large pool. Students who apply in both the fall and spring windows give themselves more chances.

❓ Competitive Scholarship FAQs

When is the deadline for WilmU scholarships?
For the 2026-27 year, the application opened Feb 10 and closed June 1 for fall awards. Spring awards close Nov 1. WilmU posts the next cycle’s dates when the application reopens, usually in early February.

Can an incoming freshman apply before starting classes?
Yes. WilmU only requires a completed admissions application on record. Apply for admission first, then submit the scholarship application in the same spring.

Do these scholarships renew?
Most don’t. WilmU lists them as one-year awards, so your student applies again each cycle. The exceptions are the pathway discounts in the section above and the Neighborhood Scholarship.

Is there a full-ride or full-tuition scholarship anyone can compete for?
No. The only full-tuition award is the Neighborhood Scholarship for William Penn High School seniors. For everyone else, the biggest WilmU awards are $5,000, or $10,000 for full-time military-connected students through the Shaw Scholarship.

Does WilmU offer athletic scholarships?
WilmU competes in NCAA Division II in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, and D2 schools can offer athletic aid, usually as partial awards. That conversation happens with the coach, not through the scholarship application.

What should my student put into the application?
Several awards ask for leadership, community involvement, or a passion for a field. Have specific stories ready, not just a list. Our Brag Sheet Builder and Essay Toolkit help organize them.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Use the Filters on WilmU’s Scholarship List

WilmU’s Available Scholarships page has a filter most families scroll right past. The narrow awards are where the smaller pools are.

  1. Filter by your student’s college (Nursing, Business and Technology, and so on).
  2. Filter for “Active Military, Veterans, and Family” if anyone in the house has served.
  3. Filter for “Transfer Students Only” if your student is coming from community college.
  4. Read the “Additional Criteria” column, then make sure the application speaks to it.

Parent translation: the same application covers all of these, so the work is in knowing which boxes your student fits before they write.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Do these need a separate application?
Most come through the same WilmU scholarship application as the general awards. The AmeriCorps Matching Scholarship is different. It’s awarded once your student sends proof of completed service and registers for at least 18 credits a year.

Can part-time students win these?
Yes, most of them. WilmU lists the Shaw, Lions Club, nursing, and health sciences awards as open to part-time students. Shaw pays half as much for part-time students.

We’re a military family. What’s worth applying for?
The Shaw Scholarship is the big one, up to $10,000 for full-time students. Active-duty service members also get WilmU’s $250-a-credit rate. Note that the reduced rate doesn’t extend to guard, reserves, or family.

Are there outside scholarships just for WilmU students?
A few small ones. Delaware’s scholarship compendium lists the Janet W. Bratten and Mary King memorial scholarships, $500 each, for students attending Delaware State or Wilmington University. WilmU also keeps an external scholarship page on its site.

What if my student misses the June 1 deadline?
WilmU runs a second window for spring awards, with a Nov 1 deadline last cycle. Not every award is offered in spring, so June is still the main shot.

Honors at Wilmington University

WilmU doesn’t have an honors college or honors program, so there’s no separate application, honors housing, or honors scholarship to plan around. That fits the school. It’s built around flexible, career-focused classes for students who are often working, and recognition comes through grades rather than a separate track.

  • Dean’s List: a 3.5 or higher in a semester with at least 9 credits.
  • Graduating with honors: Latin honors start at a 3.50 and require at least 45 credits earned at WilmU.
  • Transfers: Phi Theta Kappa members with a 3.3 can apply for WilmU’s PTK Recognition Scholarship.

Honors Scholarships & Fellowships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

For the high achiever: the closest thing WilmU has to an honors award is the College Dean’s Merit Scholarship, $5,000 for a 4.0 student in each academic college. It’s listed with the competitive awards above.

Honors: FAQs (Wilmington University)

Does Wilmington University have an honors college?
No. WilmU recognizes strong students through the Dean’s List and Latin honors at graduation, not a separate honors program.

Is there an honors scholarship?
Not by that name. The College Dean’s Merit Scholarships ($5,000 for a 4.0) and the Varsalona Scholarship ($5,000 for full-time students with a 3.0 and real leadership) are the top academic awards.

Should a high-achieving student still consider WilmU?
It depends on what they want. If they want a small honors community and research seminars, look elsewhere. If they want a low-cost, flexible path into cybersecurity, nursing, teaching, or business, a strong student can stand out and finish with little debt.

⭐ College Specialty

Wilmington University is a private, nonprofit school built for flexibility. Classes start every eight weeks, many programs run fully online, and the main campus in New Castle is joined by locations in Dover and Brandywine. Its strength isn’t prestige. It’s practical, career-focused degrees at a price that’s well below most private colleges in the region.

Nationally Known Program:
Cybersecurity. WilmU’s cybersecurity program carries a National Center of Academic Excellence designation from the NSA, the federal government’s seal that a program teaches to national cyber defense standards. Students can add a digital forensics concentration, and WilmU’s student team has won the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center’s digital forensics challenge.
  • Nursing and Health Sciences: WilmU’s nursing program serves both future nurses and working RNs finishing a bachelor’s degree. Nursing is also on Delaware’s high-need list for the state’s Career-Based Scholarship.
  • Teacher Education: early childhood, elementary, and middle-level programs lead to Delaware licensure. The Aspiring Teachers Scholarship takes 15% off tuition for Delaware graduates who choose them.
  • Business and Human Resources: business, accounting, and human resource management programs designed for students who are already working or want to start quickly.
  • Criminal Justice: a popular pathway for students headed into law enforcement and public safety careers in the region.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? Wilmington University doesn’t play the merit-aid game. There’s no sticker price that gets slashed by a scholarship letter. The price is low to begin with, it’s the same for every family in every state, and it drops further if your student takes classes in Dover or fits one of WilmU’s pathways.

For Delaware families, those pathways are the real story. A future teacher from a Delaware high school gets 15% off every credit. A SEED student can do two years free at Delaware Tech, then finish at WilmU for half tuition. Add Pell and Delaware’s state awards, and a bachelor’s degree here can cost far less than almost anywhere else in the state. The catch is paperwork: the state forms close in May, WilmU’s scholarship application closes in early June, and most awards have to be won again every year.

If your student wants dorms, an honors college, and a traditional four-year campus, this isn’t that school. If they want a flexible, career-focused degree in cybersecurity, nursing, teaching, or business without a mountain of debt, WilmU deserves a serious look.
