🧭 How Wesleyan Is Different

Wesleyan doesn’t play the merit-scholarship game at all. There are no automatic awards, no “presidential” tiers, and no athletic scholarships. Every dollar of Wesleyan money is based on what your family can actually pay, and since fall 2024 those packages come with no loans built in. Wesleyan also ended legacy preference in admissions in 2023. If your family qualifies for aid, this can be a surprisingly affordable private college. If you don’t, expect to pay close to the sticker price.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Wesleyan (Read This First)

  • Check the aid box when you apply, or wait a year. If your student says they aren’t seeking aid on the application, they can’t get Wesleyan aid until they’ve finished a full year (two semesters) on campus. When in doubt, apply for aid.
  • Aid deadlines are tied to your admission round. CSS Profile, FAFSA, and tax documents are due November 15 for ED I, January 1 for ED II, and January 15 for Regular Decision.
  • Connecticut families: the state’s Roberta Willis grant doesn’t work here. Wesleyan isn’t on the state’s list of participating colleges, so in-state money you’d get at UConn or Trinity won’t follow your student to Middletown.
  • Test scores never change the price. With no merit aid, a 1550 SAT and no SAT at all get the exact same aid package. Scores only matter for admission, and Wesleyan has been test-optional since 2014.
  • The sticker price tops $100,000. Tuition, housing, food, and fees run about $98,300 for 2026-27 before books, travel, and personal costs. Run the numbers with real tax returns before you fall in love.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. Wesleyan University is test-optional for admission, but scholarships can work differently (see the next question).

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Wesleyan University? No merit or athletic scholarships, so test scores never change the money. Admission has been test-optional since 2014.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 31-34; SAT: 1300-1500.

Average net price? About $23,025/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? No. It is a private school, so everyone pays the same rate.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Wesleyan University: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Wesleyan University has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $2,000 to $4,900 more than the total below.

✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

All students: billed cost per year
$98,330
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $76,670
Housing & meals (typical) $21,660
Total billed cost $98,330

Average federal net price: $23,025 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

What’s Not in That Table

Wesleyan is private, so there’s no in-state discount. Every family starts from the same price. Every undergrad lives on campus and buys a meal plan all four years, so the housing line isn’t optional. Two costs sit outside the table: books, supplies, and personal spending (Wesleyan budgets $2,750) and travel, which Wesleyan adds to the aid budget based on how far you live. Student health insurance ($3,267 for 2026-27) is also separate if your student isn’t on your plan.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Wesleyan University

What does Wesleyan really cost per year?
For 2026-27, tuition is $75,916, required fees are $754, and housing and food are $21,660. That’s about $98,330 in billed costs. Add books, supplies, and personal spending, and the full first-year budget is $101,080 before travel. Almost no aided family pays that, but families who don’t qualify for aid should plan for it.

Is the average net price really around $23,000?
Yes. The federal figure for 2023-24 is $23,025, which is what students with grant aid paid on average after grants. It’s an average, though. Lower-income families often pay a few thousand dollars, and families who don’t qualify for need-based aid pay the full sticker price.

Will we have to take out loans?
Not as part of the aid package. Since fall 2024, Wesleyan meets 100% of demonstrated need with grants and a work-study job, no loans. Your family can still choose to borrow to cover your own expected contribution, but the school won’t build loans into the offer.

We live in Connecticut. Do we get any state help at Wesleyan?
Not from the state’s main grant program. Connecticut’s Roberta B. Willis Scholarship goes to residents at participating colleges, and Wesleyan isn’t on the list. Your student would still get Wesleyan’s need-based grant, which is usually far larger.

How much does tuition go up each year?
It varies. For 2026-27 the trustees raised tuition 4.8%. Need-based aid is recalculated every year when you renew, so if the price goes up and your finances stay the same, your grant should rise with it.

Will an outside scholarship shrink our Wesleyan grant?
Not at first. Outside money first replaces the work-study piece, then your student’s summer earnings contribution. Only after those are covered does it start cutting into the Wesleyan grant. That makes small local scholarships worth chasing.

Does a stepparent’s income count?
No. Wesleyan’s financial aid FAQ says a stepparent’s income is not counted as a family resource when it figures the parent contribution. If your parents are divorced or separated, though, the noncustodial parent usually has to fill out the CSS Noncustodial Profile.

📅 Wesleyan Aid Timeline (Simple Version)

  • October 1: CSS Profile opens (Wesleyan’s code is 3959). Start early; it takes longer than the FAFSA.
  • November 15: Aid documents due for Early Decision I.
  • January 1: Aid documents due for Early Decision II.
  • January 15: Aid documents due for Regular Decision.
  • Every November 15 after that: Returning students renew aid for the next year.

Parent rule of thumb: the aid deadline matches your admission round, so pick the round first and put that date on the fridge.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at Wesleyan University

Here’s the short answer: Wesleyan doesn’t give automatic merit scholarships. No GPA tiers, no test-score tiers, nothing you can earn just by having strong numbers. Instead, every aided student gets a Wesleyan Grant sized to the gap between the cost of attendance and what the CSS Profile and FAFSA say your family can pay. Wesleyan promises to meet 100% of that gap with grants and a work-study job.

How the Wesleyan Grant Actually Works

Think of it as simple subtraction. Wesleyan takes the full cost of attendance, subtracts what it calculates your parents can pay, subtracts a small student share, and fills the rest. For first-year students, the student share is a $2,750 work-study job plus a summer earnings expectation (the standard first-year amount is $2,000). Families with a lower parent contribution get a reduced student share, and families whose parent contribution is $7,000 or less have the student share replaced with more grant money in the first year.

Enter the numbers you have. We'll highlight the automatic award your student would actually get and tuck the rest out of the way. Leave it blank to browse everything.
Residency
Based on published cutoffs for entering freshmen. Always verify with the college before finalizing plans.

This institution does not offer designated Automatic Merit scholarships at this time.

Note: The automatic bucket above stays empty for Wesleyan because there’s no merit money to list. All of Wesleyan’s real dollars show up in the need-based grant and in the competitive and hidden gem sections below.

Wesleyan Aid FAQs

Does Wesleyan offer any merit or athletic scholarships?
No. Wesleyan’s aid is based on financial need only. Its sports teams compete in NCAA Division III, which doesn’t allow athletic scholarships anyway.

Do higher test scores mean more money?
No. Two students with the same family finances get the same package whether they sent a perfect score or no score at all. Testing only affects admission, and Wesleyan is test-optional.

What happens if we skip the aid application now and apply later?
Your student won’t be eligible for Wesleyan aid until they’ve finished a full year (two semesters) at Wesleyan. If there’s any chance you’ll need help, apply for aid when you apply for admission.

Do we have to reapply for aid every year?
Yes, for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The renewal opens in early October with a November 15 deadline. International students who get aid as first-years don’t reapply.

What forms does Wesleyan need?
The CSS Profile (code 3959), the FAFSA (code 001424), signed federal tax returns and W-2s through IDOC, and the CSS Noncustodial Profile if parents are divorced or separated. Students who only want federal aid can file just the FAFSA.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Wesleyan has no merit-based flagship scholarship like the big-name awards at many universities. Its competitive money comes in three need-based programs: the QuestBridge Match for low-income U.S. students, and two full-cost programs for international students, the Freeman Asian Scholars and the African Scholars. For most U.S. families, QuestBridge is the only one that applies.

✅ How Wesleyan Money Fits Together

Aid Type Stacks? Parent Translation
Wesleyan Grant (need-based) This is the base Everything else gets measured against this. It fills whatever gap remains after your family share.
QuestBridge Match Replaces This is the Wesleyan package with a $0 parent share, locked in for four years. It isn’t an extra layer on top.
Freeman / African Scholars Replaces These cover the full cost for international students, so there’s nothing left to stack.
Outside scholarships Partly They replace work-study first, then the summer earnings share, before they touch the Wesleyan grant.
Federal Pell Grant Part of the package It counts toward meeting your need. It doesn’t add money on top of a fully met package.

If your student is hunting for a school that rewards a high GPA with a big check, Wesleyan isn’t it. The deal here is different: if your family has real need, Wesleyan promises to cover all of it without loans, and that can beat a merit offer from a cheaper school.

Student savings over $20,000 are counted at 25% a year. ❓ Competitive Scholarship FAQs

How does the QuestBridge Match work at Wesleyan?
Your student applies to QuestBridge’s National College Match in the fall of senior year and ranks Wesleyan. Finalists who rank Wesleyan send their transcript, CSS Profile, and tax documents to Wesleyan by November 1. Matched students are admitted with a four-year package that, for 2026-27, covers the full $101,080 cost with grants and a work-study job. No parent contribution, no summer earnings requirement, no loans.

What if my student is a QuestBridge Finalist but doesn’t match?
They can still apply Early Decision II (January 1) or Regular Decision. Finalists with a complete Regular Decision application can switch to Early Decision II until noon on February 1.

Can U.S. students get the Freeman or African Scholars awards?
No. Freeman is for citizens or permanent residents of eleven East and Southeast Asian countries, and African Scholars is for citizens or permanent residents of Africa’s 54 countries. Students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents aren’t eligible for either. There’s no separate application. Eligible students who apply for aid are considered automatically.

Does Wesleyan still partner with Posse?
No. Wesleyan ended its Posse Veterans partnership starting with the Class of 2027. Veterans can still use GI Bill benefits here, and Wesleyan is a Yellow Ribbon school.

Is there a National Merit scholarship?
No. Since Wesleyan offers no merit scholarships, there’s no National Merit award. A National Merit Finalist gets the same need-based package as any other admitted student.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Wesleyan’s Money Comes After You Arrive

Most of Wesleyan’s hidden money isn’t a scholarship you apply for in high school. It’s the extras that come with a need-based package, plus funding your student can go after once they’re on campus.

  1. Apply for aid with the admission application, every time. That one box unlocks the first-year extras below.
  2. Freshman year, have your student meet the Gordon Career Center so they know how the summer grant cycle works.
  3. Sophomore fall, go to the McNair and Mellon Mays info session if grad school is even a maybe.
  4. Science, math, or psychology majors: find a research mentor by junior year and ask about the free fifth-year master’s.

Parent translation: at Wesleyan, the “scholarship hunt” mostly happens in college, not before it.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These aren’t headline awards, but they fill real gaps: a laptop and setup money for high-need first-years, health insurance help, funding for unpaid summer internships, and a tuition-free fifth year that ends with a master’s degree. Several go only to students already on need-based aid, which is another reason to apply for aid at admission.

Strategic Detail
Wesleyan is a Yellow Ribbon school. When it ended its Posse Veterans partnership starting with the Class of 2027, Wesleyan said it would keep covering tuition costs that VA benefits don't. Confirm the current Yellow Ribbon terms and any cap on participants with Wesleyan's VA certifying official before you count on it.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

What extras do high-need first-years get?
Students whose parent contribution is under about $7,000 may get a laptop, a one-time transitional grant for bedding, dorm setup, and winter clothes, and a first year with no summer-earnings or savings contribution. It’s added to the aid package automatically.

Does Wesleyan help pay for health insurance?
Yes, for some families. Students not on a parent’s plan must buy Wesleyan’s student plan ($3,267 for 2026-27). Families earning under $75,000 with typical assets and no comparable coverage get grant money to cover it.

How do Wesleyan Summer Grants work?
They pay up to $5,000 toward housing, food, and travel for an unpaid or low-paid summer internship, volunteer role, or research spot. Students on need-based aid get their own early application window, and about 40% to 45% of applicants get funded. A student can only get one.

Is the BA/MA program really tuition-free?
The fifth year is. Tuition for two semesters of master’s work is waived in about ten science, math, and psychology departments. Students still pay for housing and food, and those who had Wesleyan grant aid in their senior year may qualify for aid for the master’s year too.

What are McNair and Mellon Mays?
They’re national grad-school pipeline programs with chapters at Wesleyan. McNair serves first-generation, low-income STEM students, and Mellon Mays focuses on the humanities and social sciences. Both give juniors and seniors summer and school-year funding plus a faculty mentor. Students apply in sophomore or junior year, and U.S. citizenship rules apply.

Honors at Wesleyan University

Here’s something that surprises a lot of families: Wesleyan doesn’t have an honors college. There’s no separate honors application at admission, no honors dorm, and no honors scholarship. At a school this size with an open curriculum, the whole place is built around small classes and close work with professors, so there’s no need for a special track on top.

Instead, honors at Wesleyan is something your student earns near the end. Seniors can write a thesis in their major and earn Departmental Honors or High Honors. Students whose work doesn’t fit a single department can apply for Honors in General Scholarship. At the very top, University Honors goes to less than 1% of graduates who earn High Honors and then pass an oral exam before the Honors Committee.

Honors Scholarships & Fellowships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

There are no honors-linked scholarships at Wesleyan, so this section stays empty. The closest thing to “honors money” is the tuition-free BA/MA fifth year and the McNair and Mellon Mays fellowships, covered in the Hidden Gems section above.

Wesleyan’s “Colleges Within the College”
  • College of Social Studies (CSS): A demanding, discussion-heavy major that blends history, government, economics, and philosophy, and one of Wesleyan’s signature programs.
  • College of Letters (COL): A literature, history, and philosophy major where every student goes for Departmental Honors.
  • College of Integrative Sciences (CIS): Interdisciplinary science with hands-on research, and a path into the BA/MA program.
  • College of Film and the Moving Image: Home of Wesleyan’s well-known film program.

Honors at Wesleyan: FAQs

Is there an honors college or honors program to apply to?
No. Wesleyan doesn’t run an admission-based honors college. Honors is awarded at graduation based on a senior thesis or project.

Does earning honors come with money?
No. Honors is an academic distinction, not a scholarship. Wesleyan’s money is need-based, so honors doesn’t change your bill.

What’s University Honors?
It’s the highest award Wesleyan gives, going to under 1% of each graduating class. Students need High Honors first, then a recommendation and an oral exam in front of the Committee on Honors.

Should my student skip the honors thesis to do the BA/MA?
Many BA/MA students do skip the BA thesis, because they’ll write a bigger master’s thesis on the same project during the free fifth year. It’s worth talking through with a faculty advisor by junior year.

⭐ College Specialty

Wesleyan is a small liberal arts school (about 3,200 undergrads) in Middletown, Connecticut, and it’s known for an open curriculum: there are no required core courses, so students build their own path across 47 majors. It also does more research than you’d expect from a school its size. Professors teach every class, there are PhD programs in the sciences and music, and undergrads get pulled into faculty labs early.

Nationally Known Program:
Film Studies lives in Wesleyan’s College of Film and the Moving Image, and it’s the program people outside Connecticut tend to know Wesleyan for. It has a long track record of graduates working in film and television, and it’s one of the most popular majors on campus.
  • Government, Economics & Psychology: These are Wesleyan’s biggest majors by headcount. They’re popular paths into law, policy, consulting, and graduate school.
  • College of Social Studies: A signature, seminar-style major combining history, government, economics, and philosophy, with a heavy reading and writing load.
  • Neuroscience & Behavior and the sciences: Strong research access for undergrads, plus a five-year BA/MA with a tuition-free master’s year in about ten science, math, and psychology departments.
  • Computer Science & Engineering paths: A growing CS major, a newer College of Design and Engineering Studies, and 3-2 dual-degree options that add an engineering degree from Columbia, Dartmouth, or Caltech.
  • English and the arts: A deep bench in writing, music, theater, and dance, with hundreds of arts events on campus each year.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? Wesleyan is a “pay what you can” school, not a “win a scholarship” school. There’s no merit money to chase, and test scores won’t move your price an inch. In exchange, Wesleyan promises to cover 100% of your demonstrated need with grants and a campus job, no loans, and it throws in extras like a laptop, health insurance help, and summer internship money for the families who need them most.

So the real question for your family is simple: what does the CSS Profile say you can pay? If that number is modest, Wesleyan can cost less than a state school. If you won’t qualify for aid, you’re looking at more than $100,000 a year, and a merit offer somewhere else may win. Either way, apply for aid when you apply for admission, keep the aid deadline for your round on the fridge, and if your student loves film, social science, or lab research, give Wesleyan a real look.
