Most schools on this site lead with merit. WashU flips that around. The big money here is need-based, and it comes with three promises most private colleges don’t make:
- Need-blind admission for first-year applicants who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Asking for aid does not hurt your student’s chances.
- 100% of demonstrated need met with no loans. Gaps get filled with grants, scholarships, and work-study instead.
- Your home equity doesn’t count when WashU figures out what you can pay.
Last fall, first-years who qualified for aid got an average need-based grant of about $75,880. Merit is the smaller, harder-to-win piece of the puzzle.

📌 Washington University in St. Louis at a Glance
- There is no automatic merit. No GPA and test-score grid, no guaranteed awards. In fall 2025, only 44 first-years without financial need received a WashU merit scholarship, out of 1,961.
- Early Decision II and merit don’t mix well. WashU decides school scholarships and Signature awards after ED II decisions go out, and it tells families who need a scholarship to attend to apply Regular Decision instead.
- Two scholarship deadlines, not one. The Signature Scholar Programs and the Nemerov Writing Scholars want the application in by December 16 for priority. School scholarships simply ride on the regular admission application.
- Aid forms come due fast. Early Action and ED I families need the CSS Profile and FAFSA in by November 17. Divorced or separated? The noncustodial parent files a CSS Profile too.
- The WashU Pledge has a map. It covers Missouri and 53 southern Illinois counties for families earning $75,000 or less. A Chicago family at the same income isn’t in the Pledge, though WashU still meets their full need.
- New for fall 2027: WashU added an Early Action round and now considers demonstrated interest. A campus visit or virtual session is worth the time.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Washington University in St. Louis: 2026–2027 Rates
Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.
📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Washington University in St. Louis has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $1,900 to $4,800 more than the total below.
✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.
| Tuition & mandatory fees | $72,722 |
| Housing & meals (typical) | $24,272 |
| Total billed cost | $96,994 |
Average federal net price: $21,786 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
WashU is private, so there’s no in-state tuition. Everyone sees the same sticker price. But the WashU Pledge covers tuition, fees, housing, and food for all four years if your student lives in Missouri or one of 53 southern Illinois counties and your family earns $75,000 or less. There’s no separate application. Your student just gets admitted and files the aid forms on time.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at WashU
Why is the sticker price close to $100,000 a year?
For 2026-2027, WashU bills $71,310 in tuition, $1,412 in required fees, and about $24,272 for a double room and the Platinum meal plan. That’s $96,994 before books, travel, and personal costs, which WashU estimates at another $5,266. Almost nobody with financial need pays that number, though.
What do families actually pay?
The federal average net price is about $21,786 a year after grants and scholarships. Last fall, 843 first-years qualified for need-based aid, and every one of them had 100% of their need met. Their average need-based grant was about $75,880.
Will my student graduate with loans?
WashU’s no-loan policy means loans are never part of the aid offer. Families can still choose to borrow to cover their own share. Among 2025 graduates who started at WashU, 18% borrowed, and the average total was about $22,127.
Does WashU count the value of our house?
No. WashU says it no longer counts home equity in need-based aid, which can make a big difference for families who are house-rich but cash-tight.
Does applying Early Decision change our aid?
WashU says the aid offer is figured the same way in every round. If the ED offer truly doesn’t work for your family, talk to your aid counselor; WashU will release your student from the commitment if the cost isn’t affordable.
Is there a way to lock in costs for four years?
WashU’s Partners in Education with Parents (PEP) program can freeze all four years of costs at the first-year rate, depending on how you participate. There’s also an interest-free plan that splits each semester’s bill into five monthly payments.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at WashU (Short Answer: There Aren’t Any)
This institution does not offer designated Automatic Merit scholarships at this time.
- Full need met, no loans: guaranteed for every admitted student who qualifies for aid.
- WashU Pledge: full cost for eligible Missouri and southern Illinois families earning $75,000 or less.
- First-Year Grants: startup cash, store credit, a summer-earnings waiver, and a laptop credit based on income.
You’ll find all three in the Hidden Gems section below.
Automatic Merit FAQs (WashU)
Does WashU offer automatic merit scholarships?
No. All WashU merit awards are competitive and picked by committees. The closest thing to “automatic” is the guarantee to meet 100% of need without loans.
What GPA or test score does my student need for a WashU scholarship?
WashU doesn’t publish cutoffs for any scholarship. For context, enrolled first-years who sent scores landed between 1500-1550 SAT and 33-35 ACT, and 86% of those reporting class rank were in the top 10%. WashU is test-optional for fall 2027.
Does a National Merit Finalist get money from WashU?
Not from WashU itself. WashU doesn’t fund National Merit scholarships. If your student wins one from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, WashU accepts it as an outside scholarship.
Do outside scholarships get taken away?
Generally no. WashU says outside scholarships are usually added on top of your aid, as long as the total doesn’t go over the cost of attendance. State and federal grants follow different rules.
Can my student earn merit money after freshman year?
No. WashU merit scholarships are only awarded during the first-year admission process. That’s why the first application matters so much.
We probably won’t qualify for need-based aid. Is WashU still realistic?
It can be, but go in with clear eyes. Your path to a discount is the competitive awards in the next section, and they’re a long shot for anyone. Run the net price calculator before you fall in love.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)
WashU says school scholarships and Signature awards are decided after ED II decisions come out. If your family needs merit money to make WashU work, WashU’s own advice is to apply Regular Decision, so your student isn’t locked in before knowing.
✅ How Does Merit Fit With Other Aid at WashU?
| Aid Type | Adds On Top? | WashU Parent Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Signature & School Scholarships | Not spelled out | WashU doesn’t publish how merit changes a need-based grant. If you qualify for both, ask your aid counselor how your package changes before you celebrate. |
| Outside Scholarships | Usually yes | Generally added to your existing aid, up to the full cost of attendance. |
| First-Year Grants | Yes | Startup cash and the summer-earnings waiver increase your aid instead of replacing it. |
| Pell & State Grants | Built in | Counted in your package. If total aid goes over the cost of attendance, WashU may trim its own scholarship. |
Here’s the honest math: only about 252 of last fall’s 1,961 first-years received any non-need award, and just 44 of those had no financial need. Apply for everything your student fits, but build your budget around the need-based guarantee, not around winning one of these.
❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs
When is the deadline for the Signature Scholar Programs?
Submit the Common or Coalition Application by December 16, 2026 for priority. Then answer a 250-word question in the WashU Pathway for each program. All scholarship materials must be in by January 4, 2027.
Can my student apply to all three Signature programs?
Yes. Danforth focuses on servant leadership, Ervin on social justice and community impact, and Rodriguez on service and bringing different cultures together. Each one has its own short answer.
What do the Signature programs pay?
Either full tuition plus a $2,500 yearly stipend, or a partial-tuition scholarship. Both renew for the length of the degree as long as your student keeps up academically.
Is there an interview?
Signature finalists are told by the end of February and must attend virtual events and an interview in early March. Fitzgibbon and Conway/Proetz finalists also get a virtual interview. Missing it means losing eligibility.
How many school scholarships are there?
Up to 16 Ampersand (Arts & Sciences, full tuition plus $1,000), up to 10 Langsdorf Fellowships (Engineering, full tuition plus $1,000), and up to 10 Olin Distinguished Scholars (Business, full tuition). Architecture and Art each offer up to one full-tuition award and up to five partial awards.
Does my student need a portfolio?
Only for Architecture (Fitzgibbon) and Art (Conway/Proetz). They need 10-20 pieces of recent work, and no portfolio means no consideration.
Can international students apply?
Yes, for the school scholarships and the Danforth and Rodriguez programs. Ervin is limited to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and undocumented or DACA students living in the U.S.
How should my student prepare?
The 250-word “what do you want to study and why” answer carries extra weight for Ampersand. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help organize the service and leadership stories the Signature committees look for.

Honors at WashU: There’s No Honors College
A lot of families go looking for WashU’s honors college. There isn’t one. WashU’s Common Data Set confirms it doesn’t run an honors program, and when the whole incoming class sits near the top of the academic range, a separate honors track doesn’t add much.
What WashU has instead are smaller communities that play a similar role:
- Signature Scholar Programs: Danforth, Ervin, and Rodriguez scholars get their own orientation, advising, events, and in some cases a first-year seminar. These are the closest thing to an honors cohort.
- School scholar cohorts: Langsdorf Fellows take part in special programming in Engineering, and Ampersand Scholars get priority review for Ampersand first-year programs.
- Beyond Boundaries: a separate interdisciplinary entry point with a small cohort (47 students enrolled this fall).
Honors Scholarships
This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.
WashU doesn’t offer honors-only scholarships. The awards that come with a built-in community are listed in the Flagship section above.
- Kessler Scholars: up to two $5,000 grants for summer research, internships, or study abroad.
- Frist Scholars: a one-time $5,000 summer experience stipend through the career center.
- Study abroad: WashU’s need-based aid and scholarships apply to approved study abroad programs.
Honors FAQs (WashU)
Does WashU have an honors college?
No. The closest equivalents are the Signature Scholar Programs and the school scholar cohorts.
Does my student apply separately for anything honors-like?
Only the Signature programs, which take a 250-word answer per program in the WashU Pathway. Everything else comes from the regular application.
Is being a Signature Scholar a time commitment?
Yes, in a good way. Scholars are expected to attend program events and stay involved on campus and in community service.

⭐ College Specialty
WashU is a mid-sized private research university in St. Louis with about 8,000 undergrads and a 10-to-1 student-faculty ratio. Students apply to one of five schools (Arts & Sciences, Business, Engineering, Architecture, or Art), but they can take classes across all of them and don’t have to declare a major until sophomore year.
Pre-Health and Biology. Biology is one of the biggest majors on campus, and WashU runs dedicated pre-health advising for students headed to medical, dental, or other health programs. If your student is pre-med, this is a big reason families put WashU on the list.
- Engineering (including Biomedical): McKelvey School of Engineering awards about 14% of WashU’s bachelor’s degrees. Biomedical engineering is a natural fit for students who want to mix medicine and design.
- Business (Olin): Olin Business School takes students directly as freshmen, and there’s a joint degree program in business and computer science.
- Computer Science: about 9% of degrees, and growing, with the business joint degree as a popular combo.
- Architecture and Art: the College of Architecture and College of Art take a small number of students and require or strongly encourage a portfolio, which also opens the door to their full-tuition scholarships.
- Thinking about social work? WashU’s well-known Brown School is graduate-only, but undergrads can use a 3-2 path to finish a bachelor’s and a Master of Social Work in five years.
