Paying for college can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re the first in your family to navigate it all. Utah Tech University keeps costs lower than many universities, and there are clear ways to bring the price down even further through automatic merit aid, competitive scholarships, and special programs. This guide breaks it all down in plain English so you can compare options and see how it fits alongside Utah’s state aid programs and the full College Scholarships Hub.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Utah Tech University

Expense In-State Out-of-State
Tuition & Mandatory Fees (12–20 credits, full year) $6,481.74 $18,713.58
Housing & Meals (Financial Aid allowance) $9,434 $9,434
Books & Supplies (allowance) $900 $900
Personal (allowance) $5,530 $5,530
Travel/Transportation (allowance) $1,944 $1,944

Notes: Tuition & fees reflect the official 2025–2026 full-time band (12–20 credits) per semester totals doubled for the year. Living costs are UT’s standard financial-aid allowances (actuals vary by housing/meal choice).

Average Annual Cost (federal “net price”): $15,265
What families actually paid on average after scholarships and grants were applied — no loans included.
Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)learn how WUE pricing works
Utah Tech participates in WUE, which sets tuition at 150% of the in-state tuition for eligible nonresidents.
Worked example (2025–2026): Out-of-state tuition & fees are $9,356.79/semester. WUE tuition & fees are $4,632.99/semester (tuition $4,176.24 + fees $456.75). That’s about $4,723.80 saved per semester (~$9,447.60 per year).
  • Who qualifies? Legal residents of WUE states/territories in eligible programs; online-only programs are ineligible.
  • How much? ~150% of in-state tuition (plus standard fees).
  • Apply or automatic? First-time admits are auto-considered; if not notified after admission, submit the WUE waiver application. Limited awards; keep GPA ≥2.0 and 12–20 credits/term to retain.

Who gets in-state rates?
Utah residents per state residency rules; nonresidents may qualify later via residency reclassification (time on WUE does not count toward residency).

How is the credit band applied?
Utah Tech charges a flat full-time rate for 12–20 credits per semester; taking more credits within the band doesn’t increase base tuition.

Are allowances fixed bills?
No. Books, personal, travel, and most housing/meal figures are planning allowances for financial aid; your actual costs vary by choices.

✅ Automatic Merit Scholarships

Utah Tech awards admission-based scholarships automatically when you’re admitted by the priority date. Awards are tied to your Index Score (unweighted GPA × 10 + highest ACT composite) or unweighted GPA alone. Top nonresident and resident tiers use the index; mid tiers are GPA-only.

Scholarship Award Amount Eligibility (plain English) Separate App? Renewable? Who Actually Wins?
Presidential (Resident) Pays full in-state base tuition (up to 130 attempted credits) First-time freshman; admitted by Mar 1. Awarded by Index ≥ 68. No Yes — keep ≥12 credits/term and ≥24/year; min college GPA 3.5; fall & spring only. Students with high GPAs plus strong ACT to reach Index ≥68 (example: 3.8 GPA + 30 ACT = 68).
Chancellors (Resident) $3,400/year (in-state base tuition portion) Index 64–67.9; admitted by Mar 1. No Yes — ≥12 credits/term & 24/year; min GPA 3.2. Competitive GPAs with solid ACT; typical ~3.6–3.8 with ACT mid-20s to high-20s.
Trustees (Resident) $2,400/year GPA 3.7–4.0; admitted by Mar 1. No Yes — ≥12 credits/term & 24/year; min GPA 3.0. Strong academic record without needing test scores (GPA-only tier).
Deans (Resident) $1,500/year GPA 3.4–3.69; admitted by Mar 1. No Yes — ≥12 credits/term & 24/year; min GPA 3.0. Solid B+/A- students (no test score required).
Merit (Resident) $1,000/year GPA 3.0–3.39; deadline typically Mar 1 (extended to May 1 for 25–26 per UT page). No Yes — ≥12 credits/term & 24/year; min GPA 3.0. B students meeting the GPA band.
Presidential (Nonresident) Pays full nonresident base tuition (up to 130 attempted credits) First-time freshman; admitted by Mar 1. Index ≥ 68. No Yes — ≥12 credits/term & 24/year; min GPA 3.5. Top GPAs plus strong ACT to hit Index ≥68.
Chancellors (Nonresident) Resident-tuition rate (student pays in-state base tuition; UT cites ~$5,435/yr on 24-25 tuition) Index 61–67.9; admitted by Mar 1. No Yes — ≥12 credits/term & 24/year; min GPA 3.2. High GPAs with solid ACT to reach 61–67.9 index.
Founders (Nonresident) 125% of resident tuition (student pays ~125% resident base tuition) GPA 3.25–4.0; admitted by Mar 1. No Yes — ≥12 credits/term & 24/year; min GPA 3.0. Good academic record (GPA-only tier for nonresidents).
WUE / Red Rocks (Nonresident) ~150% of resident tuition; UT cites ~$8,152.56/yr on 24-25 tuition GPA ≥ 2.5; July 15 deadline; limited awards. No for first-time admits (auto-considered); otherwise submit waiver by deadline. Yes — typically ≥12 credits/term; min GPA 2.0. Students from WUE states or Red Rocks-eligible pathways meeting GPA ≥2.5.
Good Neighbor (Nonresident) Resident tuition + surcharge HS graduate from AZ (Mohave/Coconino) or NV (Clark/Lincoln); GPA ≥ 2.5; July 15 deadline. Yes — apply for the program. Yes — ≥6 credits/term; min GPA 2.0. Border-county residents who meet GPA and apply on time.
Half Merit (Nonresident) Resident tuition + 1/2 nonresident differential (student still pays portion of NR diff.) GPA 2.30–2.49; July 15 deadline. Yes — apply (waiver). Yes — ≥12 credits/term & 24/year; min GPA 2.0. Nonresidents with mid-2 GPA range who apply by July 15.

Note: Dollar examples on Utah Tech pages reference 2024–2025 tuition for illustrations; rates adjust annually. Utah Tech explicitly states you cannot stack an academic scholarship with a nonresident waiver (e.g., WUE/Red Rocks/Good Neighbor/Half Merit). Keep one best award.

Do I need a separate application?
No. For the automatic academic tiers (resident and nonresident), your admissions file (including transcript and, where required, ACT/SAT) submitted by March 1 is your application. Waiver programs like WUE/Red Rocks, Good Neighbor, and Half Merit may require a brief waiver application if you weren’t auto-notified.

Are test scores required?
Utah Tech awards freshmen scholarships with and without ACT/SAT. However, per the catalog, the top two academic scholarships require ACT/SAT; others are GPA-only. For index-based tiers, UT uses your highest ACT composite in the index formula. No official policy indicates ACT/SAT superscoring; plan on highest single-sitting composite being used for index calculations.

What are the renewal rules?
Most awards require you to complete at least 12 credits per semester (24 per year) and keep the stated college GPA (e.g., 3.5 for Presidential, 3.2 for Chancellors, 3.0 for Trustees/Deans/Merit; 2.0 for WUE/Red Rocks/Good Neighbor/Half Merit). UT recently shifted to a credit-based timeline: eligibility lasts until 130 overall attempted credits (see award letter for details).

Can I stack with WUE or other waivers?
No. UT states scholarships and nonresident waivers do not stack — you’ll keep the single best offer.

🏆 Competitive Scholarships

Some universities set aside selective awards that go beyond the automatic GPA/test-based scholarships. These usually require an extra application, essay, or interview, and they are limited in number. At Utah Tech University, there are currently no central, university-level competitive scholarships published for 2025–2026 outside of the automatic merit and waiver programs already listed. Honors-specific and departmental opportunities are covered separately in their own sections below.

Scholarship Award Amount Eligibility Separate App? Renewable? Who Actually Wins?
No competitive university-level scholarships are listed for this cycle.

Why is this table blank?
Utah Tech does not currently advertise any university-wide competitive scholarships beyond the automatic merit and nonresident waiver programs. Departmental and Honors awards are separate and will be covered later in this guide.

Does this mean my student can’t apply for extras?
Not at all. Many departments (Engineering, Business, Arts, etc.) and the Honors Program have their own donor-funded or selective scholarships, but they aren’t run through the central freshman scholarship process.

Where should I look instead?
Once your student chooses a major or joins Honors, check the departmental scholarship portal and the Honors College section of this guide for competitive opportunities that require essays, applications, or faculty recommendations.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

Beyond the big automatic awards, Utah Tech students can also tap into smaller, niche programs — often tied to need, identity, service, or military pathways. These “hidden gems” don’t always get as much attention, but they can make a real difference for families when stacked with other aid.

Disclaimer: Award amounts and GPA requirements are based on 2025–2026 published ranges. Figures for ROTC and Earn to Learn may vary slightly by year or funding availability — check program pages for the most current amounts.

  • Student Leadership Scholarships — awarded to students in leadership roles; application required through UT portal.
  • Alpha Alpha Alpha (Tri-Alpha) Honor Society — for first-generation students with ≥30 credits and ≥3.2 GPA; offers national-level scholarship opportunities.
  • Talent & Departmental Scholarships — available in Fine Arts (music, theater, art) and various academic colleges; applications through specific departments.
  • Clubs & Organizations — students in leadership positions in campus groups may qualify for leadership-based funding.

Are these awards automatic?
No. Hidden gem awards almost always require a separate application, whether it’s through ROTC, the scholarship portal, or the study abroad office.

Can these stack with automatic merit?
Yes. Most hidden gem scholarships can stack on top of automatic merit or waivers, though ROTC scholarships replace tuition charges directly.

Do I need to reapply each year?
It depends. ROTC and first-gen scholarships can be renewable if you maintain the required GPA and standing. Study abroad grants are one-time awards tied to the program.

Where do I find them?
Check the Utah Tech Scholarship Portal, ROTC program pages, and Global Education office for current applications and deadlines.

🎖️ Honors Program (Booth Honors at Utah Tech University)

The Booth Honors Program gives ambitious students a way to go deeper — with small seminars, closer mentoring, and opportunities that make a big school feel personal. It’s designed for motivated learners who want more challenge, not more years on their degree plan.

What a Typical Utah Tech Honors Student Looks Like
• High school GPA: 3.5+ (UT requires maintaining ≥3.25 once enrolled)
• Strong writing and curiosity shown in the application essay
• Leadership or service involvement on campus or in the community
• Doesn’t need ACT/SAT for admission, but often brings solid test scores if submitted
Honors Perks That Matter
  • Priority class registration each semester
  • Small, discussion-based Honors seminars
  • Dedicated Honors space (“The Booth”) and LLC housing option
  • Faculty mentorship, research support, and travel grants
  • Special community events and networking with peers

Is admission automatic?
No. Students apply directly to the Booth Honors Program. Applications are open year-round, but for priority benefits, apply by March 16 (fall) or October 1 (spring).

Does it add time to graduation?
No. Honors requirements overlay your existing degree — they don’t add extra semesters.

Are there extra scholarships?
Honors students may compete for research and travel grants, but there are no automatic tuition discounts tied directly to Honors.

Final Thoughts

College costs can be confusing, but Utah Tech makes it easier to plan with clear automatic scholarships, special waivers, and hidden-gem programs like ROTC and first-gen support. Pair that with the Booth Honors experience, and your student can get a strong education while keeping the price within reach. Take some time to compare Utah Tech’s offers with other Utah schools and regional WUE partners — the savings can be significant when you look at the full picture.
