University of Detroit Mercy Scholarships (2026–2027)

Detroit Mercy is the largest Catholic university in Michigan and the only university in the country sponsored by both the Jesuits and the Sisters of Mercy. It sits on the McNichols campus about ten minutes from downtown Detroit, enrolls roughly 2,700 undergraduates, and admits most students who apply. That combination confuses a lot of families: it looks like an easy admit, so people assume the money is thin. It is not. Detroit Mercy discounts heavily, and for Michigan residents with financial need it runs one of the only zero out-of-pocket tuition programs in the state.

The catch is that almost none of it is automatic in the way families expect. There is no published GPA and test score grid to check yourself against, no superscore, and the biggest awards all hinge on a FAFSA detail most people get wrong.

The tuition figure above covers business, health professions, science, humanities and University College. Architecture and Engineering students are charged a higher rate, roughly $1,200 more per year. Nursing students studying at Aquinas College carry an additional annual fee and a different housing figure. • Any time senior year, before May 1: Take the official campus visit. That alone is worth $4,000 over four years.
• December 1: Scholarship priority deadline. Apply by this date for the strongest merit consideration.
• April 1: Last day to be admitted if you want Titan Edge consideration.
• April 15: FAFSA deadline for Titan Edge, with Detroit Mercy listed first.
• August 1: The donor scholarship portal opens for the next academic year. This is the step almost everyone skips.

Parent rule of thumb: the December 1 date is the one that sets your merit number. Everything after that fills gaps.

Most merit-heavy schools publish a grid: hit this GPA and this ACT, get this dollar amount. Detroit Mercy does not, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight. The review weighs grade point average, how hard your coursework was, leadership, service and extracurricular involvement, with test scores counted only if you choose to send them.

What that means practically: you cannot price this school before you apply, and neither can anyone else. Students in the mid-3s and up with real activity records tend to land in the upper part of the band. Students who are strong on paper but thin on involvement often land lower than they expected. Apply, look at the actual offer, then compare.

Transfer students are the exception. Detroit Mercy publishes an actual GPA grid for transfers, and the jump from a 2.49 to a 2.50 is worth $5,000 a year.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

Is there a competitive full-tuition scholarship a freshman from outside Detroit can win?
No. The MPLCC Scholarship is the only full-tuition competitive award open to freshmen, and it requires living inside a defined neighborhood on Detroit’s west side: West McNichols on the north, the Lodge Freeway on the south, Livernois on the west, and Log Cabin and Idaho Streets on the east. Up to two are awarded per year. For everyone else, the Titan Edge is the full-tuition path, and it runs on financial need rather than competition.

What is the difference between the Phi Theta Kappa and Jesuit Founders scholarships?
One requirement. Both are full-tuition transfer awards with the same 3.50 GPA minimum, the same 24-credit threshold, the same essay, letter of recommendation and committee interview, and the same timeline. Phi Theta Kappa requires active PTK membership. Jesuit Founders does not. If your student transferred without joining PTK, that door is still open.

How do I get invited to compete?
You do not apply directly. You apply for transfer admission with 24 or more transferable credits and a 3.50 cumulative college GPA, get unconditionally admitted with no conditions attached, and file the FAFSA with Detroit Mercy listed as school number one. Qualified students are invited. Invitations go out on a rolling basis starting in early May for fall entry.

What are the deadlines?
For fall entry, admission must be complete by early July and scholarship documents are due in late July, with decisions in early August. There is also a winter cycle. Confirm the exact dates for your term with the admissions office, because they shift year to year.

Can I try again next year if I lose?
No. Detroit Mercy states you can only be invited one time to compete. You also cannot defer your admission to another term or change your major after receiving the award. Treat the invitation as your one shot and put real work into the essay and interview.

Does the full-tuition award cover everything?
No. These cover tuition only. Books, additional fees and housing are on you. A student with full tuition covered still needs to plan for roughly $11,500 in housing and food if living on campus. Federal, state and outside aid can be applied toward those costs.

Is Detroit Mercy a National Merit or Stamps partner?
No to both. There is no National Merit Finalist package and Detroit Mercy is not a Stamps Scholarship partner institution.

What about theatre students?
Detroit Mercy runs audition-based awards for both freshmen and transfers, and amounts are not published. Freshmen must be regularly accepted into the Theatre major first, then are invited to audition. Transfers audition during the winter semester by faculty invitation. Contact the Theatre department directly rather than waiting for something to appear in your award letter.

🧠 Parent Strategy: The FAFSA “School Number One” Rule

If you take one thing from this page, take this. Three separate pots of money at Detroit Mercy require that Detroit Mercy be listed as the first school on your FAFSA, not just listed somewhere in the list:

1. The Michigan Tuition Grant and Michigan Competitive Scholarship.
2. The Titan Edge zero out-of-pocket tuition program.
3. The full-tuition Phi Theta Kappa and Jesuit Founders transfer scholarships.

Parent translation: families rank schools on the FAFSA by preference, or alphabetically, or in the order they remembered them. Colleges cannot see your FAFSA ordering and it has no effect on admissions decisions anywhere. Put Detroit Mercy first while you are still deciding. You can change it later. Leaving it third can cost you thousands for no reason at all.

📌 The Second Application Nobody Tells You About

Being admitted and receiving your merit award does not enter your student for a single donor-funded scholarship. Those live in a separate portal at udmercy.academicworks.com, which opens August 1 for the following academic year.

1. Sign in with the Titan User ID, not the email address. This trips up a lot of students on the first try.
2. Complete the general application once. It auto-matches to every donor award the student qualifies for.
3. Answer the optional questions too. That is what drives the matching.
4. Check the dashboard for status and screenshot confirmations.

Funding is limited and awards go out until the money is gone, so the student who completes this in August is in a different position than the one who does it in October.

The HRC Scholars and Ghafari Scholars programs are the most undervalued awards on this page. Each pairs a four-year scholarship with a paid summer engineering internship for three years, sponsored by a major Michigan architecture and engineering firm. Both are limited to Architectural Engineering and Civil Engineering majors, and the cohorts are small. Three summers of paid engineering work and a named industry relationship heading into senior year is worth more than the scholarship dollars, and parents consistently skip past these because the award amount is not published. Apply to both.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Which of these stack with my merit award?
Most of them. The state programs, federal grants, departmental engineering awards and donor scholarships all layer on top of your Detroit Mercy merit aid. The two that do not are the vendor tuition discount and the religious discount, which Detroit Mercy explicitly says cannot be combined with any other university scholarship or grant.

My spouse works for GM. Should we take the 25 percent discount?
Do the arithmetic before you decide. Twenty-five percent of tuition is roughly $8,600 a year at current rates. If your student’s merit award plus the Catholic Education Grant plus the Visit Grant adds up to more than that, take the scholarships instead. If your student is a modest academic fit and the merit offer comes back light, the discount may win. You cannot have both, and you have to refile the discount form every single term. The list of qualifying employers is long and includes GM, Ford, American Axle, DTE, Chase, Comerica, the City of Detroit, Wayne County, the State of Michigan, Henry Ford Health, Corewell Health, Trinity Health Michigan, Ascension, Plante Moran and the Archdiocese of Detroit, among others.

We are a Michigan family. What is the single biggest thing to get right?
The Michigan Achievement Scholarship, worth up to $5,500 a year. It requires only a FAFSA, but you must have been a Michigan resident since July 1 of the previous year, graduated from a Michigan high school in 2023 or later, enrolled full time within 15 months of graduating, and demonstrated need by the state formula. It is also the second ingredient in Titan Edge, so qualifying for the full amount is what unlocks the zero out-of-pocket tuition path.

My student was a Detroit Promise recipient at community college. Does it follow them?
Detroit Mercy participates in the Detroit Promise at the university level, and its own renewal policy lists a 2.5 GPA requirement for Promise students. Two cautions. First, that 2.5 is higher than the 2.0 that covers most Detroit Mercy awards, so a student can keep their merit aid and still lose the Promise. Second, Promise funding cannot be transferred from one university to another once you start, so choose carefully.

We applied for the Tuition Incentive Program years ago and never saw a dollar. What happened?
Probably nothing went wrong. Detroit Mercy is a Phase II only institution for TIP, meaning the funds do not apply until your student has completed at least 56 credits including transfer credits. Families sign up during high school, see nothing for two years and assume it lapsed. Check with financial aid before you write it off. You do have to begin using TIP within four years of finishing high school.

If there is no deadline listed, when should I check?
Ask the department directly. Detroit Mercy’s engineering and science page carries a standing note that some awards may not be funded in a given year, and several departmental applications are not posted publicly, including the Dylenski Travel Grant, which you have to request from the CHASS program coordinator. A five-minute email to the department is worth more than an hour of searching the website.

Can current students get these?
Many of them, yes. The donor portal, TRIO, the Clare Boothe Luce Scholarship at junior standing, VICEROY, Fostering Futures and the state programs are all open to continuing students. The portal reopens every August 1, so this is an annual task, not a one-time one.

• Business: the Commerce Scholarship, up to $16,000 a year, the largest published automatic award at the university.
