- Middle 50% SAT: 1500-1560
- Average GPA: 4.54
Starting in fall 2027, UChicago will charge no tuition to students whose families earn under $250,000 with typical assets. Under $125,000, tuition, fees, housing and meals are all covered. That is the class applying right now. If your family has been crossing UChicago off the list because of a sticker price near $100,000, run the numbers again before you do.

📌 University of Chicago at a Glance
- UChicago does not take the CSS Profile. Instead you fill out a free UChicago Financial Aid Worksheet in your UChicago Account, upload parent 2025 tax returns and W-2s (plus business returns if you own one), and file the FAFSA (school code 001774). The “FAFSA Only” card above undersells this. There is real paperwork.
- Free tuition is not automatic. It is need-based, so it only happens if the aid paperwork is in on time: Nov 16 for Early Action and Early Decision I, Jan 15 for Early Decision II, Feb 15 for Regular Decision. Miss it and there is no institutional need-based aid in the first year.
- “Typical assets” matters as much as income. Ordinary checking, savings and small investment accounts are typical. A second property, a family business or a large portfolio can move you out of the guarantee even if your income is under the line. The family farm is not counted.
- Merit money is rare here. Most UChicago aid is need-based. Merit awards start at $2,000, only winners are notified (rolling through the end of April), and only 57 first-year students without need got merit in the latest data.
- Application deadlines come first. Early Action and Early Decision I close Nov 2, 2026. Early Decision II and Regular Decision close Jan 4, 2027.

💰 Cost of Attendance at University of Chicago: 2026–2027 Rates
Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.
📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest University of Chicago has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $2,000 to $5,000 more than the total below.
✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.
| Tuition & mandatory fees | $78,675 |
| Housing & meals (typical) | $21,414 |
| Total billed cost | $100,089 |
Average federal net price: $14,860 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
UChicago is private, so everyone sees the same price no matter which state you live in. The table shows the full 2026-27 bill. For the class starting in fall 2027, though, families under $250,000 with typical assets pay no tuition, and families under $125,000 pay nothing for tuition, fees, housing or meals. Above those lines, UChicago still meets 100% of demonstrated need with grants, not loans. The sticker price is real for wealthier families. For most families it is not the number you will pay.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at the University of Chicago
Is UChicago really free for families under $250,000?
Tuition is, starting with students who enroll in fall 2027, as long as your family has typical assets and you file the aid paperwork on time. Under $125,000, housing, meals and fees are covered too. Between $125,000 and $250,000 you would still pay toward housing, meals and fees, but UChicago meets any remaining demonstrated need with grants.
What does “typical assets” mean?
UChicago describes typical assets as standard checking and savings accounts and small stock trading accounts. Things that are not typical include owning real estate besides your home, owning a business, a large stock portfolio, or significant cash or investments that produce dividends. Rural families: the family farm is not counted as an asset.
Do I need the CSS Profile for UChicago?
No. UChicago no longer accepts the CSS Profile or anything sent through IDOC. You complete the free UChicago Financial Aid Worksheet inside your UChicago Account, upload parent 2025 federal tax returns and W-2s, add business tax returns if a parent owns any share of a business, and file the 2027-28 FAFSA.
Will my student have to take out loans?
Not as part of the aid package. UChicago replaces loans with grants. Students can still choose to borrow federal loans, but they are not expected to.
Why are first-year fees higher than later years?
First- and second-year students pay a $720 class fee on top of the regular student fees, so required fees are about $2,715 in year one compared with $1,995 later. The tuition figure above includes the first-year fees.
How do I get a real estimate for my family?
Use UChicago’s Net Price Calculator. For the fall 2027 class, enter your 2025 tax information. If a parent owns a business, the calculator may not be accurate, so plan on a direct conversation with the aid office.
Can Illinois families add state money?
Yes. Illinois residents who qualify for need-based aid can use the state’s MAP Grant at UChicago, and it counts toward meeting your need. File the FAFSA as early as you can and check our Illinois aid and grants guide for the current MAP priority date.

📅 UChicago Money Timeline (Simple Version)
- Nov 2, 2026: Early Action and Early Decision I applications due. Merit and First Phoenix consideration ride on this application.
- Nov 16, 2026: Aid documents due for Early Action and Early Decision I applicants. This is what unlocks the free tuition guarantee.
- Jan 4 and Jan 15, 2027: Early Decision II and Regular Decision applications due Jan 4. Aid documents for Early Decision II due Jan 15.
- Feb 15, 2027: Aid documents due for Regular Decision applicants.
- Through the end of April: Merit scholarship winners hear back on a rolling basis.
Parent rule of thumb: the aid paperwork deadline is the one that costs real money. Put it on the calendar the same day your student hits submit.
Automatic Scholarships: University of Chicago
Note: “Automatic” here means “if you qualify, you get it.” The Free Tuition Guarantee still needs the aid application. First Phoenix only needs the admissions application.
Automatic Scholarships: FAQs (University of Chicago)
Who gets the Free Tuition Guarantee?
Admitted students starting in fall 2027 or later whose families earn under $250,000 with typical assets. You have to submit the UChicago Financial Aid Worksheet, tax documents and FAFSA by your round’s aid deadline.
What is the First Phoenix Scholarship?
Every student who is the first in their family to attend college gets at least $20,000 across four years. “First-gen” here means your parents did not earn a degree from a four-year college or university. No extra application is needed.
If my student is first-gen and also qualifies for free tuition, do the awards add up?
First Phoenix becomes part of a package that covers at least full tuition. If your family has no financial need, First Phoenix is a stand-alone award of at least $20,000.
Are there automatic scholarships based on ACT or SAT scores?
No. UChicago is test-optional with a no-harm policy, and its merit scholarships are chosen by committee. See the Competitive section below.
Do these renew?
Yes. Need-based aid is reviewed each year, so file every year. First Phoenix runs four years with good academic standing.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)
✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at UChicago?
| Aid Type | Stacks? | Parent Translation |
|---|---|---|
| University merit scholarship | Coordinated | If you also have need, merit usually covers part of that need instead of adding extra on top. |
| Police and Fire, CPS, Partner Schools | Yes, with need aid | Up to full tuition, and UChicago still meets the rest of your demonstrated need. |
| QuestBridge Match | Replaces | One full four-year scholarship package. It is the whole package, not an add-on. |
| Outside scholarships | Yes, 100% | You keep every dollar. UChicago only trims its aid if your total gift aid would go over the full cost of attendance. |
| Illinois MAP Grant | Part of package | State grant money counts toward meeting your need. |
Honest take: if your student is chasing a big merit check, UChicago is a long shot. If your family is under $250,000, the free tuition guarantee will usually do more than any merit award could. Merit matters most for families above that line with no financial need.
❓ Competitive Scholarship FAQs
Is there a separate merit scholarship application?
No. Every first-year applicant is considered automatically through the admissions application. Transfer students are not eligible for merit.
How will we know if we won a merit scholarship?
Winners are notified on a rolling basis through the end of April. UChicago only notifies winners, so silence means no award.
Does UChicago offer a National Merit scholarship?
UChicago’s current scholarship pages do not list a National Merit award. If your student is a Finalist, ask your regional admissions counselor directly before naming UChicago as your first choice with National Merit.
Who qualifies for the National Police and Fire Scholarship?
Admitted children, stepchildren or adopted children of active, sworn, professional police officers or firefighters anywhere in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, including sheriffs’ offices. Children of officers injured or killed on duty, or mandatorily retired, also qualify. It needs a separate form and covers up to full tuition.
We live in Chicago. Are there special awards?
Yes. CPS graduates are considered automatically for up to full tuition. Children of CPS teachers and school-based staff can get the CPS Educators Award. Graduates of four partner schools (UChicago Charter Woodlawn, Senn, Providence St. Mel and Kenwood) have their own scholarship. Chicago residents attending high school in the city also skip the application fee.
Is UChicago a QuestBridge partner?
Yes. Students who match get a full four-year scholarship. Finalists who do not match can still apply through QuestBridge.
What should students prepare?
UChicago’s supplemental essays carry a lot of weight in both admissions and merit. Families can use our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder to organize activities and write stronger responses.

Honors at the University of Chicago
UChicago does not have an honors college, and it does not run a separate honors scholarship program. Families coming from big public universities sometimes look for one and come up empty. The reason is simple: the whole College works the way an honors program does at most schools. Every student takes the Core, classes are small, and research and paid internships are built into the four years for everyone.
- No separate application: There is nothing extra to apply to after admission.
- Departmental honors: Individual majors offer honors, usually earned in the final year through a thesis or project.
- Where the money is instead: Need-based aid, First Phoenix, and the competitive awards above.
Honors Scholarships & Fellowships
This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.
- Paid internships: UChicago connects undergraduates with more than 5,000 paid internships each year.
- Research for nearly everyone: 99% of students complete a substantive internship or research experience.
- Funded first-summer opportunities: First-gen students and Odyssey Scholars can get a funded summer internship or research spot after first year.
Honors: FAQs (University of Chicago)
Does UChicago have an honors college?
No. There is no honors college or honors scholarship track to apply to.
So how does a top student stand out for money?
Through the regular application. Merit scholarships are chosen by committee from the admissions file, and every first-year applicant is considered.
Can students graduate with honors?
Yes. Majors offer departmental honors, typically through a senior thesis or project.

⭐ College Specialty
UChicago is the school for students who like to argue about ideas and then go test them. It is a private research university on Chicago’s South Side, in Hyde Park, and it runs on quarters instead of semesters, so classes move fast. The thing that defines the place is the Core: a shared set of courses in the humanities, social sciences and sciences that every student takes, built to teach students how to think rather than what to think.
Economics: UChicago is the home of the “Chicago School” of economics, and the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics is one of the most influential in the world. Economics is by far the most popular major on campus, and social sciences make up more than a third of all bachelor’s degrees.
- Mathematics and Statistics: About 9% of degrees, with a reputation for rigor that draws students who want real depth.
- Computer Science: One of the fastest-growing majors, now among the most popular on campus.
- Biological and Physical Sciences: Strong pipelines into medicine and research, helped by the university’s national laboratory connections.
- Political Science and Public Policy: Popular paths that tie into the Institute of Politics and the Harris School of Public Policy.
- Molecular Engineering: The Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering offers a newer, research-heavy engineering path in areas like quantum and biotechnology.
- Career outcomes: 98% of the Class of 2025 had job, graduate school or other post-college offers.
