📊 Admissions Snapshot

  • Acceptance Rate: ~27%
  • Middle 50% ACT: Not used (test-blind)
  • Middle 50% SAT: Not used (test-blind)
  • Average GPA: 4.12-4.28 (middle 50%, fall 2026 admits)
📈 Getting In: What the Numbers Actually Say

  • Fall 2026: about 141,700 first-year applications and a 27% admit rate. The middle half of admits had a 4.12 to 4.28 GPA.
  • Out-of-state students get in at a much higher rate. For fall 2025, about 40% of out-of-state applicants were admitted, compared with about 25% of Californians. The catch is the price tag (see Cost of Attendance below).
  • No early action, no early decision. Everyone applies through the same UC application between Oct 1 and Nov 30.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at UC San Diego (Read This First)

  • The UC application is the scholarship application. Regents, Chancellor’s, Triton Scholars and Jacobs Scholars are all picked from it. There’s no second form, so the personal insight answers are doing double duty.
  • There is no automatic merit here. No GPA chart, no guaranteed award. For most California families, the real money is need-based: Blue and Gold, Cal Grant and UC grant.
  • March 2 is the money deadline. FAFSA or CADAA, plus the Cal Grant GPA your high school sends. Miss it and the state money can disappear.
  • Out-of-state families get almost no need-based help. UC San Diego says it cannot give university grant money to nonresidents. Triton Scholars and the Regents Scholarship are the exceptions.
  • You’re admitted to a major, not just the school. Computer science, engineering, data science and similar majors are “selective.” If your student gets in as undeclared, the earliest chance to switch in is the summer after freshman year, and it is not guaranteed.

💰 Cost of Attendance at University of California, San Diego: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest University of California, San Diego has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $800 to $2,100 more than the in-state total below. $1,600 to $4,000 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$41,697
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $21,254
Housing & meals (typical) $20,443
Total billed cost $41,697
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$80,967
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $60,524
Housing & meals (typical) $20,443
Total billed cost $80,967

That is $39,270 more per year than California residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $12,470 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

Out-of-State Reality Check

UC San Diego has no regional tuition deal (it’s not a WUE school) and no out-of-state tuition waiver. Out-of-state students pay a $39,270 nonresident supplement every year on top of regular tuition, and UC says almost every nonresident undergraduate stays a nonresident all four years. The only campus-level relief is merit: the Triton Scholars Award ($5,000 to $20,000 a year) and the Regents Scholarship ($5,000 a year). Run the net price calculator before you fall in love with the campus.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at UC San Diego

Will tuition go up every year?
Not for your student. Under UC’s Tuition Stability Plan, the tuition rate is set for each entering class and stays flat for up to six years. A student starting in fall 2026 pays the 2026 rate all the way through. Housing and campus fees can still go up.

Why is the out-of-state bill so much higher?
California taxpayers subsidize residents. Everyone else pays the $39,270 nonresident supplemental tuition on top of base tuition, which is why the out-of-state total lands near $81,000 a year before any scholarship.

Can my student become a California resident after freshman year?
Plan as if the answer is no. UC says it is extremely difficult for undergraduates whose parents live outside California, and nearly all of them stay nonresidents through graduation. Budget all four years at the out-of-state price.

Do we have to pay for UC San Diego’s health insurance?
It’s billed automatically (about $3,195 a year), but you can request a waiver if your family’s plan meets UC’s standards. That is real money, so check the waiver rules and deadline before fall quarter.

What does “Blue and Gold” actually mean for us?
It’s UC’s promise to California families, not a separate check. UC says most California families earning up to $100,000 get enough grants and scholarships to cover systemwide tuition and fees. Housing and food are still on you, which is where Cal Grant B, Pell and the UC grant come in.

Is the $12,470 net price realistic?
That’s the federal average for students who got grant aid, and California’s state programs pull it down. Out-of-state families should ignore it. Their real number is usually far higher, because they don’t qualify for Cal Grant or the UC grant.

📅 UC San Diego Money Timeline (Simple Version)

  • October 1: FAFSA and California Dream Act Application open.
  • November 30: UC application due. This is also the deadline for Regents, Chancellor’s, Triton Scholars and Jacobs Scholars consideration.
  • March 2: FAFSA or CADAA filed, and the Cal Grant GPA sent by the high school. This unlocks Cal Grant, Middle Class Scholarship and most UC grant money.
  • Mid-March onward: Admission decisions roll out. Scholarship offers arrive with admission or with the aid offer.
  • May 1: Deadline to say yes.

Parent rule of thumb: put March 2 on the fridge. It decides more of your bill than anything else on this list.

Automatic Aid at UC San Diego (Need-Based, No Separate Application)

Straight talk: UC San Diego has no automatic merit scholarships. No GPA grid, no guaranteed award for a test score (UC doesn’t even look at the SAT or ACT). What is automatic is need-based money. File the FAFSA or CADAA by March 2, and California students are considered for everything below without another form.

Residency
Based on published cutoffs for entering freshmen. Always verify with the college before finalizing plans.
Start with your state. The awards in this first group come from the state, not the college. They are decided by residency and the FAFSA, and they stack on top of whatever automatic merit award the college gives below. If you live out of state, use the toggle above and these will step aside.

✚
Stacking & Combining
Pays UC systemwide tuition and fees, $15,588 in 2026-27. Housing is not included. Stacks with the UC grant, Pell, and campus scholarships. Guaranteed (an entitlement) for every graduating senior who meets the GPA, income, and deadline.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Every California senior with a 3.0 whose family is under the ceiling and whose school sent the GPA to CSAC by March 2. The miss is almost always the GPA verification, which the high school must submit separately; a student with a perfect FAFSA and no verified GPA gets nothing.

📅 Deadline: FAFSA or CADAA plus GPA verification by March 2
✓ Renews (4 yrs)

✔ Stackable
🏫 2.0+ GPACalifornia resident or AB 540 student; 2.0 GPA; 2026-27 income ceiling $76,100 for a family of four, assets under $111,900; FAFSA or CADAA and a verified GPA by March 2

✚
Stacking & Combining
For lower-income families. Year one is a $1,648 access award for books and living costs; from year two it adds the full Cal Grant A tuition amount for your school on top of the access award. Students with dependent children or a foster care history can get up to $6,000 in access money. Stacks with Pell and college aid.

💡
Strategic Detail
State program, not a University of California, San Diego award. Rules and amounts are set by the state and can change with each budget. Full details on the CollegeReadyParent CA page.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Low-income seniors with at least a 2.0 who filed by March 2. The first-year letter looks small because tuition does not kick in until sophomore year; families sometimes decline a school over that without realizing year two is worth ten times more.

Middle Class Scholarship
📅 Deadline: FAFSA or CADAA by March 2; no separate application
✓ Renews (4 yrs)
Varies
✔ Stackable
California resident or AB 540 student at a UC or CSU; household income and assets under $262,000 (dependent students, 2027-28 ceiling); no GPA requirement; no separate application

✚
Stacking & Combining
No fixed amount: the state computes cost of attendance minus other gift aid, minus an $8,616 student contribution, minus a parent contribution for incomes over $100,000, and pays a share of what is left based on the year's budget. Comes after Cal Grant and Pell, stacks with campus aid, and reaches families well above the Cal Grant ceiling.

💡
Strategic Detail
State program, not a University of California, San Diego award. Rules and amounts are set by the state and can change with each budget. Full details on the CollegeReadyParent CA page.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Families between roughly $100,000 and $262,000 at a UC or CSU, the group that gets nothing from Cal Grant. The award changes every year with the state budget, so a sophomore's letter can be smaller than freshman year's for reasons that have nothing to do with the student.
One award, not a pile. Colleges apply your student's single best automatic award. Automatic scholarships almost never stack with each other, though some stack with housing, departmental, or outside money. The stacking notes on each card tell you which.

Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan
📅 Deadline: March 2 (FAFSA or CADAA plus Cal Grant GPA verification)
✓ Renews (4 yrs)

✔ Stackable
California residents (including AB 540 students) who qualify for aid. UC says most California families earning up to $100,000 receive enough grant and scholarship money to cover systemwide tuition and fees.

✚
Stacking & Combining
Not a separate check. It is UC's promise that your combined grants (Pell, Cal Grant, UC grant, scholarships) will cover at least systemwide tuition and fees. Housing, food and books sit outside the promise.

💡
Strategic Detail
UC's current wording is "most families up to $100,000." Older UC San Diego materials still say $80,000.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: California families under roughly $100,000 who file the FAFSA or CADAA by March 2 and make sure the high school sends the Cal Grant GPA. Families who miss March 2 can lose the state piece, and then the tuition promise is much harder for UC to keep.

✓ Renews (4 yrs)
Varies
✔ Stackable
California residents or AB 540 eligible students enrolled at least half time, with need shown on the FAFSA or CADAA. Every federal, state and campus document deadline must be met.

✚
Stacking & Combining
This is the campus's main need-based money and fills the gap after Pell and Cal Grant. UC San Diego states it cannot give university grant money to non-California residents.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
California students with need who answer every document request on time. The students who lose it are usually the ones who miss a verification upload in the Financial Aid Tool over the summer before freshman year.
Data last verified Oct 29, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Note: These awards are for California residents and AB 540 students. UC San Diego states it cannot give university grant money to non-California residents. Out-of-state families should jump to the Triton Scholars Award in the next section.

Automatic Aid: FAQs (UC San Diego)

Does UC San Diego give automatic merit scholarships for high GPAs?
No. Every merit award here is selected, not formula-based. Strong students are reviewed for the Regents Scholarship, Chancellor’s Scholarship, Triton Scholars and Jacobs Scholars from the UC application itself.

What income qualifies for Blue and Gold?
UC says most California families earning up to $100,000 get enough grant money to cover systemwide tuition and fees. There’s no separate application. The FAFSA or CADAA by March 2 is the application.

What is the UC Grant-In-Aid?
It’s UC San Diego’s own need-based grant, and it fills the gap after Pell and Cal Grant. It’s only for California residents and AB 540 students, and you lose it if you miss document deadlines.

Can we get the Middle Class Scholarship if we make too much for Cal Grant?
Often, yes. It’s built for California families above the Cal Grant limits, up to about $262,000 in income and assets, and it comes from the same FAFSA or CADAA. The amount changes every year with the state budget.

What’s the most common way families lose this money?
The Cal Grant GPA. The high school has to send it to the state by March 2, separate from your FAFSA. Ask the counselor in the fall of senior year whether it’s going in.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Here’s what makes UC San Diego different: you never fill out a scholarship application for these. Every award below is picked from the UC application your student submits by November 30. The personal insight answers, the activities list and the course choices are the whole scholarship file. Merit money is also rare here. In 2025-26, about 409 first-years received non-need institutional scholarships, averaging roughly $12,700.

✅ How UC San Diego Awards Fit Together

Award Who It’s For Parent Translation
Regents Scholarship Residents and nonresidents $5,000 a year plus first-choice college and priority registration. The perks can matter as much as the money.
Chancellor’s Scholarship California residents Up to $5,000 a year. Background and need count, so file the FAFSA even if you think you won’t qualify.
Triton Scholars Award Out-of-state and international $5,000 to $20,000 a year. The only real campus merit lever for nonresidents.
Jacobs School Scholars Engineering and CS admits Covers the full California-resident cost after other aid. It doesn’t cover the nonresident supplement.
Need-based grants California families with need Scholarships count inside your aid package. Total aid can’t go over your cost of attendance, so some grant dollars may shift.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

How do we apply for the Regents Scholarship at UC San Diego?
You don’t, separately. File the UC application by November 30 and your student is reviewed automatically. Winners hear when financial aid offers come out in the spring, and get $5,000 a year for four years plus priority enrollment and their first-choice college when space allows.

Can out-of-state students win merit money at UC San Diego?
Yes, through the Triton Scholars Award ($5,000 to $20,000 a year) and the Regents Scholarship. Triton renews only while the student stays a nonresident and doesn’t get a nonresident tuition waiver.

Is the Jacobs School Scholarship a full ride?
For California residents, effectively yes. It pays whatever is left of the full in-state cost of attendance after other grants. Out-of-state winners still owe the $39,270 nonresident supplement. Students must stay in an engineering major and keep a 3.5 GPA.

When is the FAFSA deadline for the Chancellor’s Scholarship?
The Chancellor’s page says April 2, but every other UC San Diego and UC source says March 2, which is also the Cal Grant deadline. Use March 2 and you’re covered either way.

Do SAT or ACT scores help with any of these?
No. UC is test-blind for admission and scholarships. Course rigor, grades and the personal insight answers do all the work. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help with exactly those pieces.

Is UC San Diego a National Merit or Stamps school?
No. UC San Diego doesn’t sponsor National Merit Scholarships and isn’t a Stamps partner.

🧠 Parent Strategy: The “Two Forms” Rule

At UC San Diego, the restricted scholarships below are matched to students from two places: the UC application and the FAFSA or CADAA. There’s no campus scholarship portal to fill out as a freshman. That makes the job simple, but unforgiving.

  1. Fill in every activity and every honor on the UC application. That’s the only place donors’ criteria can be seen.
  2. Pick a real intended major. Several awards here target social science, STEM or pre-med students.
  3. File the FAFSA or CADAA by March 2, even if you think you earn too much. Many of these awards prefer students with need.
  4. If UC San Diego asks for proof (tribal enrollment, foster care status, high school), upload it fast.

Parent translation: skip the FAFSA and your student quietly drops out of the running for most of this list.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These are smaller, targeted awards that most families never hear about. Some go to students from San Diego and Imperial counties, some to tribal members or former foster youth, one goes to a student from Hawaii, and several reward a specific major or financial need. They stack with need-based aid inside your total cost of attendance.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Who qualifies for the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship?
California residents admitted from eligible public or public-charter high schools in San Diego or Imperial County, with family income under $80,000 and a FAFSA or CADAA filed by March 2. It pays up to $10,000 a year for four years. Ask your counselor if your school is on the list.

Are there scholarships for Native American students at UC San Diego?
Yes, two that layer together. The UC Native American Opportunity Plan covers systemwide tuition and fees for California tribal members, and the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship for tribal members adds up to $10,000 a year.

Is there anything for out-of-state students in this list?
One standout: the Allene Huanani Wong Scholarship, up to $10,000 a year for an entering student from Hawaii, with preference for science, math or engineering.

Do I need a separate application for these?
Not as an entering freshman. UC San Diego selects from the UC application and aid forms, then may ask for documents to confirm eligibility. Watch email and the applicant portal closely after admission.

Does the Hispanic Scholarship Council Scholarship require a certain background?
No. UC San Diego says its scholarships don’t consider race or ethnicity. This one looks at merit, financial need, and a preference for first-generation students.

Honors at UC San Diego: How It Really Works

If you’re used to big state schools with an Honors College, UC San Diego will surprise you. There’s no campus-wide honors program and no honors application. Instead, honors runs through the eight undergraduate colleges (Revelle, Muir, Marshall, Warren, Roosevelt, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth). Each college has its own general education requirements and, in most cases, its own invite-only honors seminar.

  • College honors programs: Revelle Honors Program, Muir’s Caledonian Society, Thurgood Marshall Honors Program, Warren Honors Council and Society, Roosevelt’s first-year honors seminar, Sixth’s community-engaged honors program, Seventh’s first-year honors seminar. Eighth’s program is still being built.
  • How students get in: Mostly by invitation. Revelle, for example, invites first-years with a 3.8+ high school GPA and strong AP, IB or honors coursework, plus Regents, Jacobs, Chancellor’s and Chancellor’s Associates Scholars.
  • Provost Honors: Any student with a 3.5+ GPA in 12 graded units for a quarter (no D, F or No Pass) earns it, and it goes on the transcript.
  • Major honors: Many departments, from computer science to economics to biology, run senior honors programs, usually built around a thesis.

Honors Scholarships & Fellowships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

Honest note: UC San Diego doesn’t attach scholarship money to its honors programs. The perks families associate with an Honors College, like priority registration, research access and mentoring, come with the Regents Scholarship and Chancellor’s Scholarship instead. Both are covered in the Flagship section above.
Why the College Choice Matters
  • GE load varies a lot: Some colleges give more freedom (Muir is known for flexibility), others have heavier writing or core sequences. That affects how easily a student can double major.
  • You rank colleges on the UC application. Regents Scholars get their first choice when space allows. Everyone else is placed by preference and availability.
  • Your major is the same at every college. The college shapes general education, advising and where you live, not what you can study.

Honors at UC San Diego: FAQs

Does UC San Diego have an Honors College?
No. There’s no campus-wide honors program. Honors happens inside each of the eight undergraduate colleges and inside individual majors.

How do you get into honors at UC San Diego as a freshman?
Mostly by invitation from your college, based on your high school record. Some programs also invite students who earn a strong GPA in their first quarters on campus.

Is there honors scholarship money?
Not tied to honors itself. The scholarship perks come through the Regents and Chancellor’s Scholarships.

Which college should my student pick?
Read each college’s general education list first. It’s the biggest day-to-day difference, especially for students planning a double major or a heavy STEM load.

⭐ College Specialty

UC San Diego is a research powerhouse that happens to sit on the cliffs of La Jolla. It’s been ranked the No. 6 public university in the country by U.S. News for four years running. If your student lights up around science, data or how the brain works, this is one of the best places in the country to be an undergrad.

Nationally Known Program:
Jacobs School of Engineering: In the 2027 U.S. News rankings, biomedical engineering placed #6 in the nation, bioinformatics #7, and the brand-new artificial intelligence major (launched fall 2025) jumped to #8. Engineering overall ranks #9 among public schools, and data science ranks #8 nationally.
  • Computer Science & Data Science: Top-15 computer science and a top-10 data science program, with deep ties to San Diego’s tech and biotech employers.
  • Biology & Pre-Health: Biological sciences is the single most common degree on campus, with UC San Diego Health and the biotech corridor next door for research and clinical experience.
  • Cognitive Science & Psychology: UC San Diego created one of the first cognitive science departments in the country, and psychology ranks in the national top 15.
  • Ocean & Earth Science: Scripps Institution of Oceanography is part of the campus, which gives marine biology and climate-science students access to one of the world’s best-known ocean research centers.
  • Economics: A top-20 undergraduate economics program, popular as a pre-business path alongside the Rady School of Management.

One honest caution: the most popular of these majors (computer science, engineering, data science) are “selective.” Students admitted to them get in directly. Students who aren’t can try to switch after freshman year, but in summer 2026 only about 45% of computer science applicants made it. Choose the major on the UC application carefully.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? UC San Diego is a top-tier research university that rewards two kinds of families very differently. If you live in California and earn under about $100,000, the combination of Blue and Gold, Cal Grant and the UC grant can make a world-class science education surprisingly affordable. That’s true even though there’s no automatic merit to chase.

If you’re out of state, it’s a different conversation. Your student has a better shot at getting in, but you’ll be looking at roughly $81,000 a year, with the Triton Scholars Award as your main way to bring that down.

Either way, the playbook is the same and it’s short. Treat the UC application as your scholarship application, choose the major carefully because switching into the popular ones is a lottery, and get the FAFSA or CADAA in by March 2.
