This page covers Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, a private liberal arts college of about 2,100 undergrads founded in 1823 and a member of the NESCAC athletic conference. It is not Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, which runs a completely different scholarship system. Double-check the name before you plug numbers into a spreadsheet.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Trinity College (Read This First)
The new Connecticut grants don’t automatically stack. Trinity says it reviews all its awards together and that grants and scholarships “are not necessarily added together.” A half-tuition county grant plus a half-tuition merit award does not mean free tuition.
Merit is rarer than the website makes it sound. Trinity advertises full-tuition and half-tuition merit, but in fall 2025 only 35 first-years without financial need got any merit, and the average was about $20,100.
Apply for aid in year one or you may never get it. Trinity says students admitted without Trinity grant money are unlikely to get any later. If there’s any chance you’ll need help, file the CSS Profile and FAFSA now.
The CSS Profile is required every single year, not just freshman year, and aid is recalculated annually.
Illinois families: the Lincoln Award full ride requires Regular Decision. Applying Early Decision anywhere, including Trinity, makes your student ineligible.
“Full tuition” is not “free.” Even the Hartford grant leaves about $3,330 in fees plus books, travel, and personal costs.
FAQ
Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. Trinity College is test-optional for admission, but scholarships can work differently (see the next question).
Do you need test scores for scholarships at Trinity College? Test-optional for admission and for merit. Trinity says every applicant is considered for merit whether or not scores are sent, and it superscores if you do send them.
What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 31-33; SAT: 1350-1460.
Average net price? About $34,832/year after aid.
Does this school use waivers/reciprocity?
No. It is a private school, so everyone pays the same rate.
💰 Cost of Attendance at Trinity College: 2026–2027 Rates
Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.
📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Trinity College has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $1,900 to $4,800 more than the total below.
✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

Average federal net price: $34,832 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
One Price for Everyone, Plus a Few Line Items Worth Knowing
Trinity is private, so there’s no in-state discount on the bill itself. For 2026-27 the billed charges are $72,820 tuition, a $2,900 general fee, a $430 student activity fee, $13,150 for a standard room, and $7,180 for meals, which comes to $96,480. Trinity also budgets about $2,600 a year for books, travel, and personal costs. Students in the Crescent Street Townhouses pay $8,465 a term for housing instead of $6,575.
The real discount for Connecticut families shows up as grants, not a lower sticker. Starting with fall 2027 entrants, the World Class in Connecticut grants cut tuition in half for six counties and cover tuition, room, and board for Hartford residents. Connecticut residents with need can also add the state’s Willis grants. See Connecticut aid & grants.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Trinity College
What does Trinity College really cost for 2026-27?
The bill is $96,480 for the year: tuition, two required fees, a standard room, and the meal plan. Add roughly $2,600 for books, travel, and personal spending and the full budget is close to $99,000. Very few families pay that, though. Trinity meets 100% of calculated need, and in fall 2025 the average first-year need-based grant was $62,221.
Is the average net price really about $34,800?
That’s the federal College Scorecard average for students who got grants, based on 2023-24 data. It blends families of every income level. Your number could be much lower or higher, so use Trinity’s net price calculator with your own tax info.
Do Connecticut residents pay less at Trinity?
The sticker is the same, but starting with students entering in fall 2027, admitted students living in Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, or Tolland County get a grant worth half of tuition. Students living in the city of Hartford get tuition, room, and board covered. Neither requires financial need. Fairfield and Windham County families don’t qualify for those two grants but can still get the state’s Willis aid if they have need.
Will our aid stay the same all four years?
Trinity recalculates need every year from a new CSS Profile and FAFSA. If your income, assets, and household stay about the same, your grant should too, as long as you meet the deadline and keep up satisfactory academic progress. A sibling leaving college or a parent remarrying can change it.
Can we skip financial aid freshman year and apply later if things change?
This is the big trap. Trinity says that for students admitted without Trinity grant aid, it’s unlikely money will be available later. You can still get federal and state aid, but Trinity’s own grants are mostly reserved for students who applied from the start. If there’s any chance you’ll need help, apply in year one.
Does Trinity’s aid include loans?
Some packages do, but they’re small. In 2025-26 the average need-based loan for first-years was about $3,200. About half of the Class of 2025 borrowed, with an average total of about $33,500 in federal loans.
November 15: Early Decision I application, CSS Profile, and FAFSA. Merit is decided in this same read.
January 15: Early Decision II and Regular Decision application, plus CSS Profile and FAFSA.
February 1: Hillel Leadership Scholarship application. Also the last day to switch from Regular Decision to Early Decision II.
February 15: Lincoln Award (Illinois residents) and the Connecticut Willis Need-Merit nomination by your counselor.
Parent rule of thumb: the aid forms are due the same day as the application. Trinity’s older first-year aid page says January 17, but its newer FAQ and admissions pages say January 15. Go with the 15th.
Automatic Scholarships at Trinity College
Trinity has no GPA-and-test-score merit chart. The money you get just by being admitted and filling out the right forms is need-based aid plus, starting in fall 2027, two new grants based on where you live. None of these need a separate application.

Up to $5,250 a year for full-time study at a four-year college is the 2025-2026 rate; Connecticut resets amounts each year.
✚
Stacking & Combining
Does not stack with the Willis Need-Based Grant. State law bars a Need-Merit winner from also getting the need-based award, so this replaces it rather than adding to it. Combines with Pell and with college merit up to the cost of attendance.

How to Apply
The student cannot apply. The high school counselor submits the student through the state's CT Scholars system, and the student lists Trinity on the FAFSA. Both must be in by February 15, 2027.

Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Connecticut seniors with modest family incomes whose counselor actually submitted them. Rank or a single test score gets a student in the door. The ones who miss it usually miss because the counselor never logged into CT Scholars before February 15.

Automatic Aid: FAQs (Trinity College)
Does Trinity give automatic merit for a certain GPA or test score?
No. Trinity’s merit scholarships are decided case by case during the admission read, with no published cutoffs. The automatic money here is need-based aid and the new Connecticut grants.
Which counties qualify for the Centered in Connecticut grant?
Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, and Tolland. The grant goes to admitted students whose primary home is in one of those counties. Fairfield and Windham counties are not on the list. Students who attend an independent school in one of the six counties may also qualify, and Trinity’s aid office makes that call.
Do we have to show financial need to get the county or Hartford grant?
No. Both are based only on where you live. You’d still file the CSS Profile and FAFSA if you want need-based aid on top.
Does the Hartford Capital City Grant make Trinity free?
Close, but not quite. It covers tuition, room, and board. Fees (about $3,330), books, travel, health insurance, and personal costs are still on you, though need-based aid can help with those.
If my student also wins merit, do we get both on top of the county grant?
Not necessarily. Trinity says it reviews all institutional awards together and that grants and scholarships are not necessarily added together. Expect the total to be adjusted, and compare the final award letter, not the headline numbers.
How generous is Trinity’s need-based aid?
Very. Trinity meets 100% of calculated need. In fall 2025 every first-year found to have need got it fully met, and the average first-year need-based grant was $62,221.
We live in Connecticut but outside those six counties. Is there anything for us?
Yes, if you have need. The state’s Roberta B. Willis Need-Based Grant (up to $4,500) and Need-Merit Scholarship (up to $5,250) can both be used at Trinity. They’re listed above.
Trinity has three merit levels: the Presidential (full tuition), the Bicentennial (half tuition), and the 1823 (amount varies). There’s no separate application and no test-score requirement. Every admitted student is reviewed. Here’s the part the brochure skips: in fall 2025 only 35 first-years without financial need received any merit at all, and their average award was about $20,100. Full and half tuition are real, but they’re rare.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs
How do we apply for the Presidential or Bicentennial Scholarship?
You don’t apply separately. Every admitted student is reviewed for merit during the admission read, so the application itself (essays, activities, recommendation, and an interview if you do one) is the scholarship application. Decisions come with the admission and aid letters.
Does my student need SAT or ACT scores to get merit?
No. Trinity says every applicant is considered for merit whether or not they send scores. If you do send them, Trinity takes the highest score on each test across dates. Only about 13% of the fall 2025 class sent scores, and the middle half of those SAT scores ran 1350 to 1460.
How many students get full tuition?
Trinity doesn’t say. What we know from the 2025-26 Common Data Set is that 35 first-years without financial need got merit, averaging about $20,100. That tells you most merit lands at the 1823 level, well under half tuition.
Are Trinity’s merit scholarships renewable?
Trinity’s aid pages don’t list renewal rules for these awards. When an award letter comes, ask the aid office to put the renewal terms and any GPA requirement in writing.
Is Trinity a Posse partner? How do students get in?
Yes. Trinity has taken Posse Scholars since 2002, and Posse awards are full tuition for four years. Students can’t apply on their own. A public high school or community group in a Posse city has to nominate them, usually early in senior year. Trinity’s Posse page has more.
Does Trinity still take QuestBridge?
No. Trinity was one of QuestBridge’s founding partners but left the program years ago. QuestBridge finalists can still apply to Trinity the regular way and will get Trinity’s full-need aid.
What should my student focus on in the application?
Trinity looks at the whole person: course rigor, the essay, one academic recommendation, activities, and an interview, which Trinity strongly recommends. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help organize all of it.
🧠 Parent Strategy: Tell Trinity What the Forms Don’t
Trinity sets aside awards of $10,000 to $30,000 a year for families whose FAFSA and CSS Profile don’t capture the whole picture. Most families never ask. Here’s how to put yourself in the running:
File the CSS Profile and FAFSA by the deadline (Nov 15 for ED I, Jan 15 for everyone else).
If something isn’t on the forms, like a job loss, medical bills, caring for a relative, or a business that looks better on paper than it is, write it down.
Ask directly whether your family can be considered for Trinity’s awards and grant opportunities.
Parent translation: the formula is the starting point, not the final word. A clear, honest letter can be worth thousands a year.
💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships
These don’t show up on the merit chart, but they’re real money. Some are tied to specific backgrounds or places, and a couple of the best come from outside foundations with their own rules and deadlines.

It’s a need-based grant from a private trust for Hartford County high school seniors who belong to a UCC/Congregational church and keep at least a 70 average. The committee’s page is on Trinity’s aid site, but the money can be used at any accredited four-year college. Applications for 2027-28 are expected to open October 1.
Can these stack with Trinity’s need-based aid?
Outside awards like Lincoln and Fuller usually come in on top as outside resources, but Trinity may adjust parts of its own package. Trinity money like the Hillel scholarship gets reviewed together with everything else. Always ask how a new award changes the rest of the letter.
Are there ways to earn money on campus beyond scholarships?
Yes. Students in Trinity’s Interdisciplinary Science Program can stay for a paid 10-week summer research job with free campus housing. Federal Work-Study jobs are posted on Handshake, and turning down work-study won’t reduce the rest of your aid.
Trinity doesn’t have an honors college, and there’s no honors scholarship to chase. What it has instead are Gateway Programs: small, invitation-only first-year communities where students take linked classes with a handful of classmates and faculty who share the same interest. Think of them as an honors experience without a price tag attached.
Interdisciplinary Science Program (ISP): first-year students team up with STEM faculty on real research. There’s an optional paid 10-week summer research job with free campus housing.
Humanities Gateway: four linked seminars over freshman year in literature, history, philosophy, and religion, for up to about 20 students.
InterArts: for students who make art. Two seminars plus arts electives, with priority registration for high-demand arts classes.
Global Health Humanities: health and healthcare seen through the humanities, with projects in Hartford and a capstone abroad or in the city.
Community Action Gateway: two seminars plus a hands-on research project with Hartford community partners.
Honors Scholarships & Fellowships
This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.
Trinity doesn’t currently offer scholarships tied to an honors program. If that changes, they’ll appear here automatically.
How invitations work: Gateway spots go to admitted students by invitation, not through the regular application. For the Humanities Gateway, selected admits get an invitation around mid-March. Trinity says saying yes or no has no effect on the admission decision.
Recognition Later On
President’s Fellows: Trinity’s top senior honor, given to one standout senior per major. The 2026-27 group has 32 students.
Departmental honors: earned through strong grades in the major and, in many departments, a senior thesis.
Honors & Gateway Programs: FAQs (Trinity College)
Does Trinity have an honors college?
No. Trinity’s Gateway Programs fill that role for first-year students, and departmental honors and the President’s Fellows recognize top upperclassmen.
Do Gateway Programs come with scholarship money?
No. The one money angle is the Interdisciplinary Science Program’s optional paid summer research job, which includes campus housing.
Can my student apply to a Gateway Program?
Not in the usual way. Trinity invites admitted students whose applications show a strong interest in the area. If your student is excited about science research or the humanities, make sure that comes through in the essay and activities.
Will a Gateway Program make freshman year harder?
It replaces part of the normal first-year schedule rather than piling on extra classes. For example, the Humanities Gateway counts as the first-year seminar, and students still take two or three other courses each semester.
Trinity is a small liberal arts college with a big-city twist. Most schools its size sit in quiet towns. Trinity sits in Connecticut’s capital, a few minutes from the statehouse, courts, insurance companies, and hospitals. That shows up in what students study. Over half of all majors are in the social sciences, and economics and political science have been the two most popular majors every year for the past decade.
Nationally Known Program: Public Policy and Law: an interdisciplinary major that pairs law, economics, and policy analysis with a required internship. Being in a capital city is the advantage. Students can work in state government, courts, and advocacy groups during the school year, not just over the summer.
Economics and Political Science: the two biggest majors, feeding finance, consulting, law school, and government jobs.
Engineering: Trinity is one of only a few highly selective liberal arts colleges with an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Engineering, with concentrations in electrical, mechanical, computer, and biomedical engineering.
Neuroscience and Psychology: both sit consistently among the top six majors, with real research opportunities for undergrads.
Hartford as a classroom: the Center for Hartford Engagement and Research connects students with local projects. Trinity also runs its own study-away programs in Rome, Cape Town, Vienna, and New York City.

Big picture? Trinity is a need-first college that just got a lot more interesting for Connecticut families. If you have financial need, Trinity meets all of it, and the average first-year grant tops $60,000. If you live in central Connecticut, the new county grant takes half of tuition off the table with no need required. If you live in Hartford itself, tuition, room, and board are covered.
What Trinity isn’t is a merit-scholarship machine. The full-tuition and half-tuition awards are real, but only a few dozen students without need get any merit each year, and the typical award is around $20,000. So treat merit as a bonus, apply for aid in year one, send the CSS Profile every year, and read the final award letter line by line, because Trinity combines its awards rather than simply adding them up. Do that, and a small college in a capital city can cost a lot less than the sticker says.

Your kid did everything right. That does not mean the money follows.
Most families build a college list first and think about scholarships second, which is backwards. This free four-part series shows you where the money actually comes from, and how to build a list around it.
