Talladega College is Alabama’s oldest private historically Black college, founded in 1867 by two formerly enslaved men who wanted a school for their community’s children. Today it is small, about 700 undergraduates, and open to most students who apply: it is test-optional, asks for a 2.0 unweighted GPA, and guarantees admission at a 3.0. About 85% of applicants were admitted for fall 2024.

The money side works differently than at most colleges on this site. There is no automatic merit, every Talladega scholarship comes through a May 1 checklist, and the college’s own awards are figured last, after federal and state grants. Read the gotchas below before you compare award letters.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Talladega College (Read This First)

  • The college is accredited but on Warning. Its accreditor kept Talladega on Warning in June 2026 over ten standards, including finances and federal financial aid compliance. The next decision comes in June 2027. Federal aid still flows, but ask admissions directly what the plan is (more in the cost section below).
  • One Talladega scholarship per year, period. If your student earns an academic award and a band award, the college keeps the bigger one and voids the other. It cannot be brought back later.
  • Talladega money is “last dollar.” Pell, state grants, and outside scholarships are applied first, and the college can shrink its own award to fit. A bigger Pell Grant often means a smaller Talladega line, not more total help.
  • May 1 is a hard stop. FAFSA, the UNCF scholarship application, the merit scholarship application, next year’s class schedule, and the housing application all have to be in. Miss one and the scholarship is forfeited, and decisions cannot be appealed.
  • 15 credits and a dorm room are part of the deal. Scholarship students must take at least 15 hours every semester and live on campus. Tuition is billed per credit, so dropping to 12 hours can cost the award without saving much.
  • The tier your student gets as a freshman is the tier for four years. It never moves up, and if it is lost, it does not drop down to a smaller award.
  • The online scholarship tools are out of date. The scholarship page still links a 2024-25 application form that did not load for us, and the net price calculator estimates from 2021-22 aid. Call the aid office instead of trusting either one.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. Talladega College is test-optional for admission.

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Talladega College? Talladega is test-optional for admission, but it has not published whether ACT or SAT scores count toward the Presidential, Provost, or Dean awards. If your student has a score at or above 21, ask the scholarship office before deciding not to send it.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 19 (average); SAT: N/A.

Average net price? About $12,450/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? No. It is a private school, so everyone pays the same rate.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Talladega College: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Talladega College has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $500 to $1,300 more than the total below.

✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

All students: billed cost per year
$26,742
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $18,682
Housing & meals (typical) $8,060
Total billed cost $26,742

Average federal net price: $12,450 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

How These Numbers Were Built

Talladega charges $505.41 per credit hour instead of a flat rate. The table uses 15 credits a semester, because that is the minimum a scholarship student must carry: $7,581 in tuition plus $1,760 in fees each semester, and $4,030 for a standard room and meal plan. Every student pays the same rate no matter what state they come from. A single room adds $2,850 a semester in the older halls or $4,250 in the New Residence Hall, and Talladega scholarships do not cover that upgrade.

⚠️ Accreditation: What “Warning” Means for Your Family

Talladega is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, now called The Commission on Colleges and Universities. In June 2025 the Commission placed the college on Warning over its finances, and in June 2026 it kept the college on Warning on two tracks. One covers finances (financial resources, financial responsibility, control of finances, and control of outside grant money). The other came out of a routine five-year review and covers student achievement, qualified leadership, enough full-time faculty and program coordinators, physical facilities, and compliance with federal financial aid rules.

Here is the plain version. A college on Warning is still fully accredited, so credits count and federal aid like Pell and student loans still pays out. Warning can only last two years, and Talladega reaches that limit in June 2027. At that meeting the Commission can lift the Warning, move the college to Probation for Good Cause, or remove its accreditation. The college has made real changes since its 2024 payroll crisis, including new leadership, cut sports, and a $15 million loan, but the outcome is not known yet.

Questions worth asking admissions: What did the June 2026 reports fix? What happens to enrolled students if the 2027 decision goes badly? Does Talladega have a teach-out agreement with another college? Keep transcripts and syllabi from every semester either way.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Talladega College

Do out-of-state students pay more at Talladega?
No. Talladega is private, so a student from Georgia or Illinois pays the same tuition as a student from Talladega County. That is one reason a big share of its freshmen come from outside Alabama.

Why does the number of credit hours matter so much?
Tuition is $505.41 per credit with no flat-rate band. At 15 credits a semester tuition runs about $7,581; at 18 credits it is about $9,097. Scholarship students have to take at least 15 hours, and Talladega scholarships do not pay for anything past 18 hours or for winter and summer classes.

Is the average net price really around $12,450?
That is the most recent believable federal figure (2022-23). The newest federal report lists $1,267 for 2023-24, which looks like a reporting error, because every income group that same year paid $12,835 or more. By income in 2023-24, families under $30,000 averaged about $12,835, families earning $75,000 to $110,000 about $18,723, and families above $110,000 about $22,348.

Can I trust Talladega’s net price calculator?
Use it as a rough floor, not a quote. It estimates from what students paid in 2021-22, when tuition and fees were about $13,866. They are about $18,682 at 15 credits now, so a calculator estimate will likely come in low.

Does the accreditation Warning affect my student’s financial aid?
Not right now. A college on Warning stays accredited and can keep awarding federal aid. One of the standards the Commission cited is compliance with federal aid rules, so it is fair to ask the aid office what changed and how refunds and disbursements are running this year.

When is the bill due?
The balance has to be paid, or a payment plan set up, by the first day of classes. Students who are not financially cleared lose access to the residence halls and dining hall, so get the aid paperwork finished in the summer, not the week of move-in.

📅 Talladega Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • October 1: FAFSA opens. File right away; Alabama’s ASAP grant comes from a small pot that runs out.
  • Winter and early spring: Apply for admission, audition for band or choir if that is in the plan, and ask the aid office for the current merit scholarship application.
  • May 1: Every scholarship item must be on file: FAFSA, UNCF application, merit scholarship application, class schedule, and housing application.
  • After June 15: New-student scholarships post, as long as the FAFSA is complete.

Parent rule of thumb: treat May 1 as the real deadline for everything, even if your student is still choosing between colleges.

Automatic Merit Scholarships: Talladega College

Talladega does not offer guaranteed, no-application merit money. Its academic awards (Presidential, Provost, and Dean) depend on an application, the May 1 checklist, and available funding, so we list them under Flagship Scholarships below. What does land here is state money that comes automatically, or close to it, once the FAFSA is filed. Use the in-state toggle to see what an Alabama family can count on.
Find your student's tier
Enter the numbers you have. We'll highlight the automatic award your student would actually get and tuck the rest out of the way. Leave it blank to browse everything.
Residency
Based on published cutoffs for entering freshmen. Always verify with the college before finalizing plans.
Start with your state. The awards in this first group come from the state, not the college. They are decided by residency and the FAFSA, and they stack on top of whatever automatic merit award the college gives below. If you live out of state, use the toggle above and these will step aside.

Alabama's only broad need grant. $300 to $5,000 a year, decided by the college, and it runs out. Stacks with Pell and with every college award. At Talladega, state grants are applied before the college's own scholarship, so ASAP can shrink the Talladega award rather than add to it.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Low-income families who file the FAFSA in October. There is no separate form and no published cutoff; the aid office packages it from a fixed pot, so the late filers are the ones who get nothing.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Dependents of veterans with a 40% or higher VA rating who get the ADVA application in before the first semester. The deadline is the problem: it is not granted retroactively, so a family that discovers it in October has lost the fall.

This institution does not offer designated Automatic Merit scholarships at this time.

Note: Talladega applies state grants before its own scholarships. For an Alabama family, ASAP usually changes how the total is split, not how big it is.

Automatic Merit: FAQs (Talladega College)

Does Talladega have automatic merit scholarships?
No. Every Talladega academic scholarship requires the merit application and the full May 1 checklist, and the college says awards are based on availability. Plan as if nothing is guaranteed until it is on the award letter.

Why doesn’t Talladega get Alabama’s $3,000 Alabama Student Grant?
Talladega is not on the state’s list of participating colleges for that program. Alabama families should not expect it here, even though it shows up at other private colleges in the state.

What state aid can an Alabama student get?
The Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP) is a need-based grant of $300 to $5,000 a year, decided by the aid office from the FAFSA. Children of veterans rated 40% or more disabled can use the Alabama G.I. Dependent Scholarship, and Alabama National Guard members can use ANGEAP. Talladega lists both military programs on its aid page.

Can students from other states bring their state grant?
Sometimes. Federal data show that 78% of Talladega’s full-time freshmen received some state or local grant in 2023-24, averaging about $8,278. Check whether your home state’s grant can be used at a private college in Alabama before you count on it.

What if my student is below a 3.0?
Students under the 3.0 assured-admission line may come in through Talladega’s bridge program. The catalog says it includes guaranteed eligibility for a sophomore-year scholarship, which gives a strong first year a real payoff. Ask admissions what that scholarship is worth.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Talladega’s 2026-27 catalog names four scholarship types: Presidential, Provost, Dean, and Transfer. It does not publish the GPA cutoffs or dollar amounts. The last grid Talladega published, in its 2021 admissions brochure, is below so you know roughly where your student lands. Treat it as a starting point and confirm the current version with the scholarship office.

📋 Last Published Tier Grid (2021 Brochure)

Tier GPA ACT / SAT What It Covered
Presidential3.75 to 4.025+ / 1200+Tuition, fees, room and board
Provost3.5 to 3.7523 to 24 / 1130 to 1190Tuition and fees
Dean3.25 to 3.421 to 22 / 1060 to 1120Half tuition

The 2021 grid also had a fourth tier, the Tornado Scholarship, for a 3.0 to 3.2. It no longer appears in the 2026-27 catalog. Talladega is now test-optional for admission and has not said whether scores still count for these awards, so a student with a 21 or higher should ask before leaving the score off.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at Talladega?

Aid Type Stacks? Parent Translation
Two Talladega awards (academic, band, choir, athletic) No Only one Talladega scholarship per year. The college keeps the larger one and voids the other for good.
Pell and FSEOG Applied first Talladega’s award is figured after these, and Pell plus a Talladega scholarship cannot go above the standard cost of attendance.
State grants (ASAP, home-state grants) Applied first Same as Pell: they can shrink the Talladega share instead of adding on top.
Outside scholarships (UNCF, church, local) Yes, within cost They do not count against the one-award rule, but the college may trim its own award to keep the total under cost of attendance.
Refunds No Talladega scholarships and UNCF awards never turn into a refund check, even if they cover more than the bill.

Here is what that means at the kitchen table. Compare the total grant aid on each award letter, not the line labeled “Talladega Scholarship.” A Pell-eligible student with a Presidential award may see a smaller Talladega number than a classmate with no Pell, while both end up with about the same coverage.

The last published grid (2021 admissions brochure) listed a 3.75 to 4.0 GPA and ACT 25+ (SAT 1200+) for full tuition, fees, room and board; the 2019 catalog required a 3.50 college GPA to renew. Talladega packages its own scholarships last, after Pell, state grants, and outside awards, and can reduce them; institutional aid plus Pell cannot exceed the standard cost of attendance, does not cover the New Residence Hall upgrade, overloads past 18 credits, or winter and summer terms, and cannot produce a refund. Recipients must enroll in 15 credits each semester and live on campus. The tier offered at admission is locked for four years. Only one institutional scholarship per year.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Students with a 3.75 or higher whose admission file is complete by Early Action and who have every May 1 item on file. Because the award is figured after Pell and state grants, a Pell-eligible winner often sees a smaller Talladega dollar amount than a family with no Pell; the total covered, not the line item, is the number to compare.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

When is the deadline for Talladega’s academic scholarships?
May 1. By then the FAFSA, the UNCF General Scholarship application, the merit-based scholarship application, next year’s class schedule, and the housing application all have to be on file. Missing any one forfeits eligibility, and decisions are final.

Can my student move up a tier after a strong first year?
No. The tier offered at admission is the one your student keeps for four years. If it is lost for low grades or dropping below 15 credits, the college does not drop the student to a smaller award; it is gone.

What GPA keeps the award?
Talladega reviews scholarships every term but does not publish current renewal GPAs. The last catalog that listed them required a 3.50 for Presidential and a 3.30 for Dean. Ask for the renewal rule in writing with the award letter.

Does a Presidential award mean college is free?
Not quite. Even in the old grid it covered standard tuition, fees, room, and board. It does not pay for a New Residence Hall upgrade, classes past 18 credits, winter or summer terms, books, or travel, and it is applied after Pell and state grants.

Is there money for transfer students?
Yes. The Transfer Scholarship is aimed at community college graduates with at least a 3.0 GPA. The amount is set case by case, and the same May 1 checklist applies.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Ask for the Money by Name

Most of Talladega’s smaller awards are handed out by the aid office or a scholarship committee, not through a public application. Families who ask get considered; families who wait usually do not.

  1. Call or email the aid office (finaid@talladega.edu) and ask for the current Common Scholarship Application. The link on the website is the 2024-25 form and did not load for us.
  2. Ask about the Angel Award, a one-year, donor-funded award Talladega created for students facing financial hardship. It is not renewable, so it works best as a gap filler.
  3. Name any award your student fits below (major, church, state, gender) and ask whether they are being considered.
  4. Get every answer in an email so you have it later.

Parent translation: band, choir, and endowed Talladega awards still fall under the one-scholarship rule. Outside money such as UNCF, Daniel Hand, and Lettie Pate Whitehead does not, so that is where real stacking happens.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These awards are not automatic, and none publish a dollar amount, but each one targets a specific kind of student. Some come from Talladega itself, and some are outside money the college packages for you. Men’s basketball players can also ask about the Coach Charles “Chuck” Elliott Annual Scholarship, which needs a 2.5 GPA and community service.

Money the college does not control. Federal programs, city promise funds, foundations, and employers. The college may help you apply, but someone else writes the check, and these almost always stack with the college's own awards.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Can my student get a band scholarship and an academic scholarship?
Not both. Talladega allows one institutional scholarship per year and keeps the larger one. A strong student who also plays should ask what each award is worth before accepting either.

Is the UNCF General Scholarship optional?
Not if your student wants to keep a Talladega scholarship. The catalog lists it as part of the May 1 checklist, so file it every year.

Who gets the Lettie Pate Whitehead and Daniel Hand awards?
Lettie Pate Whitehead money goes to Christian women with financial need from nine Southeastern states, including Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The Daniel Hand Fund supports students of African descent at colleges tied to the United Church of Christ. Neither has a public application, so ask the aid office directly.

Are there awards tied to a major?
Yes. The Farris Shorter Scholarship is for History majors with a 3.0, and the Dr. Preston B. Rowe Scholarship is for Psychology majors with a 2.5 and community service. Both are picked by the Scholarship Committee, and renewal is possible but not guaranteed.

How will we know if my student won something?
It shows up on the financial aid award letter, which arrives after the FAFSA is complete. New-student scholarships post after June 15, and continuing-student awards after May 15, as long as the FAFSA is on file.

Honors Program at Talladega College

Talladega started the Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb Honors Program in 2023, named for the pioneering cell biologist and cancer researcher. It is an honors program inside the college, not a separate honors college, and it is built for students who want a harder, more discussion-heavy path toward graduate school or a professional career.

  • What students get: smaller core classes, priority registration, priority in the housing lottery, an honors lounge, and stronger recommendation letters for graduate school
  • What they take: honors sections of English, humanities, history, education, and science, plus three upper-level electives
  • How it ends: an honors thesis or capstone, with “Honors” on the transcript and an honors cord at graduation

Honors Scholarships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

Talladega has not published any scholarship tied to the Honors Program. The program’s value is in the classes, advising, and housing priority, not in extra money.

Note: Admission criteria and deadlines for the Honors Program are not posted online. The contact listed is the associate director, Ms. Rachelle Williams (rwilliams@talladega.edu). Ask in the spring of senior year so your student can register for honors sections at orientation.
Where the Real Scholarship Money Is for Strong Students
  • Presidential and Provost: the top academic tiers, decided by the May 1 checklist.
  • Outside awards: UNCF, Daniel Hand, and Lettie Pate Whitehead stack within cost of attendance.
  • Major awards: Farris Shorter (History) and Preston B. Rowe (Psychology) for continuing students.

Honors Program: FAQs (Talladega College)

Does joining the Honors Program come with money?
No scholarship is published for it. Honors students compete for the same Presidential, Provost, and Dean awards as everyone else.

Can my student join as a sophomore or transfer?
Yes. Students entering as sophomores take a shorter set of honors history courses, then the same electives and thesis.

Is honors housing better?
Honors students get priority in the housing lottery. Remember that Talladega scholarships only cover a standard room, so a single room or New Residence Hall upgrade is still on you.

Are honors classes harder?
They are smaller and more discussion-based, and every honors course still counts toward the regular core and graduation requirements, so it does not add extra years.

⭐ College Specialty

Talladega is a small liberal arts college, and that size is the point. Classes are small, professors know students by name, and the campus sits in a historic district in the foothills about an hour east of Birmingham. It was the first college in Alabama to admit students of any race, and its history is still on the walls: the Hale Woodruff Amistad Murals hang in the campus art museum, and DeForest Chapel holds 59 stained-glass windows by artist David Driskell.

Most Popular Path:
Business Administration is Talladega’s biggest major by a wide margin, with concentrations in accounting, finance and banking, management, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Business graduates outnumbered every other major in 2024-25, and the college also offers business degrees for working adults through its evening and online FASTtrack program.
  • Psychology: the second-largest major, and the home of the Preston B. Rowe Scholarship.
  • Computer Science, Information Systems, and Cybersecurity: three separate degrees plus a campus Cyber Center, a newer focus that is growing.
  • Biology and Chemistry: a long tradition of sending graduates to medical and graduate school, once recognized nationally for its science track record.
  • Social Work and Education: Social Work holds national CSWE accreditation, and teacher preparation is approved by the Alabama State Department of Education.
  • Music: the Great Tornado Band, the largest group on campus, led London’s New Year’s Day Parade in 2024, and the touring College Choir has a national reputation.
  • Criminal Justice: one of the top majors by degrees awarded, with its own honor society.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? Talladega is a historic, close-knit HBCU with open doors, the same price for every state, and real scholarship money for strong students. It also asks more of families than most colleges do. There is no automatic merit, the college allows only one of its own scholarships, its awards are figured after Pell and state grants, the best odds go to files finished by November 15, and every piece of paperwork is due by May 1.

The accreditation Warning is the part to weigh carefully. Talladega is accredited today, federal aid is flowing, and new leadership has stabilized the finances, but the decision point arrives in June 2027. If your student is drawn to Talladega, ask hard questions, get every scholarship promise in writing, compare the total grant aid on each award letter, and have a backup college that you would be just as happy with.
