🗺️ Which Out-of-State Waiver Do You Fall Under?

SAU’s non-resident premium is about $6,200 a year, which is small to begin with. These waivers can erase most or all of it. Find your row before you assume you are paying the out-of-state column.

SAU has an unusually good estimator for a school its size. It lets you pick the specific residence hall, the specific meal plan, your residency, and your scholarship tier, then shows you a real semester bill. Most schools this size offer nothing close. Open the SAU Cost Calculator →

One caution: it is a cost estimator, not a federal Net Price Calculator. It does not model need-based grant aid, so treat the result as your bill before the FAFSA does its work.

Why is the out-of-state gap so small here?
Because SAU keeps the non-resident premium low on purpose. The difference between the in-state and out-of-state totals is roughly $6,200 a year, where at many public universities that gap runs $15,000 or more. Add a tuition waiver on top and out-of-state families can end up paying close to what Arkansas residents pay.

Can out-of-state students actually get the in-state rate?
Not the in-state rate exactly, but the non-resident portion of tuition can be waived, which gets you most of the way there. Students from Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas qualify by living in university housing, with no form to submit. Two Texas counties and eight Louisiana parishes qualify without the housing requirement. Children of SAU alumni qualify from any state.

Is the average net price figure realistic?
It is the federal average of what families actually paid after grants and scholarships, with loans excluded. It is a useful benchmark and a poor prediction. Half of SAU’s undergraduates receive a Pell Grant, so families with need often land well below the average, while a family with no need and a mid-tier merit award can land above it. The number also lags a year or two behind current pricing.

Does living on campus cost more or less?
More on paper, but not always in practice. Housing and meals add roughly $8,400 a year. Against that, living on campus is what triggers the out-of-state waiver for students from the six neighboring states, and it is worth an extra $1,000 a year on the Presidential Distinguished scholarship. For some families the dorm is the cheaper choice once you count what it unlocks.

Why are books and travel not in the total?
Because SAU does not bill you for them. The university invoices tuition, mandatory fees, housing, and your meal plan. Books, transportation, and personal spending vary too much by student to belong in a billed total, so they are kept separate. Budget for them anyway.

Will tuition go up each year?
Almost certainly, though SAU’s increases have historically been modest. Scholarship amounts, by contrast, are typically fixed at the dollar figure you were awarded. That means the gap between your award and your bill widens slightly every year, so budget for a little more in years three and four than in year one.

Does SAU require the CSS Profile?
No. FAFSA only. SAU’s federal school code is 001107. Arkansas residents should also file the state Academic Challenge application separately at sams.adhe.edu, because that one is administered by the state and has its own July 1 deadline.

📅 SAU Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

• January 15: Early decision deadline for academic scholarships. This is the date to actually work toward.
• March 1: Priority deadline for scholarships, and the deadline for the Leadership Incentive, Mulerider, and College Scholarship applications.
• April 15: Community College Transfer Scholarship deadline, fall entry only.
• July 1: Arkansas Academic Challenge deadline, filed with the state at sams.adhe.edu, not with SAU.

Parent rule of thumb: SAU says plainly that awards are limited in number and funds can deplete before March 1. Aim for January and treat March as the emergency backstop.

🔑 The Thing Most Families Miss: There Are Two Ways In

SAU’s grid is not one ladder. It is two ladders, and your student only has to climb one of them. Only the top two awards require both a test score and a GPA. Everything below that accepts either one on its own.

What this means at your kitchen table: a student with a 3.75 GPA who tests badly, or who never took the ACT at all, still walks into $7,000 a year. That is the highest award at SAU reachable without a test score, and it is worth more than most families expect.

One small string attached: awards granted on the basis of a test score also require a 2.5 minimum cumulative high school GPA.

🏅 Check Class Rank Before You Accept Anything

The Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Top 10% award pays $6,600 a year and only asks for an ACT between 19 and 26. Compare that against what those same scores earn on the test-only track:

• ACT 24 with no class rank considered: $4,000 (SAU Success)
• ACT 24 in the top 10 percent of the class: $6,600
• ACT 21 with no class rank considered: $3,000 (Scholastic Merit)
• ACT 21 in the top 10 percent of the class: $6,600

Over four years that difference is more than $14,000. If your student ranks, make sure the high school reports it and make sure SAU has it.

❓ Flagship and Competitive Scholarship FAQs

When is the deadline for the competitive awards?
March 1 for both the Leadership Incentive Award and the Mulerider Scholarship. Leadership Incentive selections are made after March 1, so do not read silence in February as a rejection.

What does the Leadership Incentive Award actually require?
A 3.25 GPA, an ACT between 20 and 22 or an SAT between 1030 and 1150, a recommendation as a leader, two letters of recommendation, and a resume. That is a modest paperwork lift for $6,600 a year.

Why does Leadership Incentive pay for only two years?
It renews for four semesters rather than the eight that most SAU awards carry. Budget accordingly. It is still roughly $13,200 over its life, which beats what a 20 to 22 ACT earns anywhere else on the grid, but do not plan a four year budget around it.

Should my student take the Mulerider Scholarship if offered?
Do the arithmetic first. It pays $3,000 a year for eight semesters, and accepting it makes your student ineligible for SAU’s other academic scholarships. A student who would have qualified for Blue and Gold Excellence at $7,000 would be trading down. A student sitting at the Achievement Award tier would be trading up.

Does SAU have a full-ride competition?
No. There is no competitive full-ride or full-tuition package at SAU. The one award flagged as full tuition is The SAU Difference, and that is a last-dollar program for Arkansas residents who receive both Pell and the Academic Challenge, not a competition.

Is SAU a National Merit or Stamps partner?
No to both. SAU is not a current Stamps Scholarship partner and does not publish a National Merit Finalist package.

Where should we put our essay energy instead?
Into the Honors College application, the departmental awards, and outside scholarships. 🧠 Parent Strategy: The Awards SAU Will Not Hand You

SAU’s academic grid is automatic. Almost nothing below is. Every award on this list requires your student to go find it, and several of them live on departmental pages that the main scholarship page never links to.

1. Out-of-state family? Start with the tuition waivers. Nothing else on this page moves the number as much.
2. Arkansas family? File the Academic Challenge application at sams.adhe.edu by July 1, then check whether The SAU Difference applies to you.
3. Artist, singer, or actor? Contact the department directly and schedule the audition or portfolio review. Do not wait for admissions to prompt you.
4. Agriculture major? Email the Department of Agriculture. Their deadline page runs behind and you will miss it if you wait for the website.
5. Already enrolled? The College Scholarships and the non-traditional award open up after you have hours on the books.

🎭 The Performance Awards Are Bigger Than People Expect

At most small publics, arts scholarships are a token few hundred dollars. At SAU they are not. The Art Department award runs $2,500 to $4,500 per semester, which at the top end is larger than every automatic academic tier except the Presidential awards. Theatre runs $500 to $2,500 per semester with a 2.00 GPA floor, which makes it reachable for a talented student whose transcript is ordinary.

Two rules to know: a student may hold only one performance scholarship, so an art award and a theatre award cannot be combined. And the music awards for choir and band do not have published amounts, so audition first and then ask the director what the number looks like.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Do these stack with my student’s academic scholarship?
It depends on which one, and this matters. The performance awards and the state Academic Challenge sit alongside an academic scholarship. The College Scholarships for upperclassmen explicitly cannot be held at the same time as an SAU academic award. Always read the award letter rather than assuming.

We are out of state. Which of these should we chase first?
The non-resident tuition waivers, by a wide margin. If you live in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, or Texas, choosing university housing triggers the waiver with no form at all. Bowie and Cass County in Texas, and eight named Louisiana parishes, qualify without even the housing requirement. Children of SAU, Southern State College, or SAU Tech alumni qualify from any state.

What is The SAU Difference, in plain English?
It is a last-dollar program for first-time Arkansas freshmen who receive both a Pell Grant and the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship. Once those two are applied, SAU fills whatever tuition and mandatory fee gap remains. Housing and meals are not included. Note that SAU has not yet posted 2026-2027 terms, so confirm with financial aid before building a budget around it.

Several of these have no deadline listed. What do I do?
Call. The Agriculture award has run a late March deadline in past cycles but the departmental page has not posted a 2026-2027 date. The music awards run on audition schedules. The non-traditional award has no published deadline on the main grid. In every one of these cases the department or admissions office has the answer and the website does not.

Can current SAU students get any of these?
Yes, and this is the part families forget. The College Scholarships are open to students who have completed two semesters and 30 hours at SAU, with 20 awards a year split evenly across the four colleges. The Peoples Bank non-traditional award is aimed at returning adult students and upperclassmen. This Is Home is open to both incoming and current students.

Is there anything for transfer students?
The Community College Transfer Scholarship pays $2,500 in fall and $2,500 in spring, but only for fall entry and only for students coming from a community college, not another four-year school. SAU also names a Mulerider Transfer Scholarship on the same page without publishing an amount, so ask about both.

Honors normally asks for two essays and two letters of recommendation. All of that is waived if your student has an ACT of 30 or higher, the Presidential Distinguished scholarship, or the Hallman scholarship. For a top-tier applicant, the Honors application collapses into a form. There is no published deadline, and SAU says decisions come promptly once materials arrive.

Honors offerings at SAU skew toward the unusual rather than the accelerated. Recent and scheduled full honors courses have included Ancient Egypt, Sustainability of Natural Resources, The Psychology of Serial Killers, Politics and Popular Music, 3-D Printing, and Guitar Making, the last of which ends in a student-built instrument exhibit and concert.

Full honors courses were cut during the pandemic and have since been restored with provost funding, so the catalog is still rebuilding.

Parent note: admission to the BSN is a second gate, not automatic with admission to SAU. Applicants must score 75 percent or better on the HESI A2 preadmission exam, which must be taken at SAU, with a maximum of three attempts. Plan for that early.

SAU competes in intercollegiate rodeo, keeps a live mule as its mascot, and calls its students Muleriders, which is either charming or baffling depending on where you grew up. For the class entering in 2025 and after, the university also launched the Mulerider Next Step Guarantee, an initiative built around making sure graduates leave with either a job or a path into further education. It is the kind of promise a school makes when its identity is built on outcomes rather than prestige.
