Here’s the first thing to understand about Sacred Heart: merit money is decided almost entirely by your student’s transcript. SHU’s scholarship committee looks at the high school record, class rank, and how hard the course load was. Test scores are optional, even for scholarships. That’s good news for strong students who don’t test well, and it means senior-year grades and course choices still matter.
🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Sacred Heart (Read This First)
Merit is first-come, first-served, and it’s locked at admission. SHU says awards are limited and only given at the time of admission. The amount won’t go up in later years, even though tuition will.
The CSS Profile is required for SHU’s own need-based grants. The FAFSA alone won’t get your student considered. Aid priority dates follow your admission plan: Nov 15 (ED I), Dec 1 (EA I), Jan 15 (ED II), Feb 1 (EA II), Feb 15 (Regular).
The bill is bigger than the tuition line. Health insurance ($3,252 in 2026-27) is billed automatically unless you waive it by the August deadline. Program fees start sophomore year, and Nursing runs $1,400 a semester.
Early Decision has real perks and a financial escape hatch. ED admits get a $1,000 grant, a free intersession course, and a $1,000 Ireland study abroad grant. SHU won’t hold you to the contract if the numbers don’t work. ED also requires an interview.

What the SHU Bill Actually Includes
One price for everyone. Sacred Heart is private, so there’s no out-of-state premium and no reciprocity program to chase.
Tuition covers 12 to 18 credits. It’s $27,085 a semester in 2026-27. A 19th credit costs $1,225.
The meal plan isn’t optional for dorm students. Students in on-campus halls are assigned Big Red Unlimited at $3,485 a semester.
Health insurance is billed unless you waive it. It’s $3,252 for the year. If your student is on your family plan, file the waiver before the August deadline.
Program fees start sophomore year. Nursing is $1,400 a semester, Business $750, Exercise Science $575, and Computing & Engineering $500.
The $1,500 enrollment deposit is due May 1. $1,350 goes toward first-semester tuition and $150 is held as a housing damage deposit.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Sacred Heart University
What does a year at Sacred Heart really cost before aid?
For 2026-27, tuition and the student services fee come to $54,520. A standard residence hall with the required meal plan adds about $20,700, so the direct bill is roughly $75,200. Add $3,252 if you don’t waive health insurance. SHU also estimates about $2,850 for books, $1,000 for transportation, and $1,500 for personal expenses.
Do out-of-state students pay more at SHU?
No. Sacred Heart is private, so a family from Connecticut and a family from Texas see the same price. Your cost changes only through merit, need-based aid, and the smaller grants covered below.
What do families actually pay after aid?
The federal average net price is about $46,000 a year for students who received grant aid. Aid helps, but SHU isn’t a school where most families pay a small slice of sticker price. Run SHU’s net price calculator with your real numbers before you fall in love.
Why is our bill higher than the tuition number on the website?
Three things usually surprise families: the unlimited meal plan every dorm student is assigned, health insurance billed unless waived, and program fees that start sophomore year. Nursing families should budget an extra $2,800 a year from sophomore year on.
Can we lower the housing cost?
Some. Standard halls are $6,865 a semester, while the newest halls run up to $8,110. Students who live at home pay for only a small commuter meal plan ($515 a semester). They may also qualify for SHU’s need-based Curtis Commuter Grant.
Will our merit scholarship go up when tuition goes up?
No. SHU says there should be no expectation that merit increases in later years. Plan for the gap between your aid and the bill to grow a little each year.
Do we have to file the CSS Profile?
Yes, if you want to be considered for SHU’s own need-based grants. File both the CSS Profile (school code 3780) and the FAFSA (school code 001403). Both open October 1, and your priority date depends on which admission plan your student uses.
📅 SHU Aid Priority Dates (Match Your Admission Plan)
Nov 15: CSS Profile and FAFSA priority for Early Decision I
Dec 1: CSS Profile and FAFSA priority for Early Action I
Jan 15: CSS Profile and FAFSA priority for Early Decision II
Feb 1: CSS Profile and FAFSA priority for Early Action II

Parent rule of thumb: merit at SHU is limited and handed out first-come, first-served. An earlier application means your student is reviewed while there’s more money in the pot.
Automatic Merit Scholarships at Sacred Heart University
Every new freshman is considered for merit during the admission review, with no separate scholarship application. SHU awards four named programs worth $6,000 to $20,000 per year. The committee focuses on the transcript, class rank, course selection, and GPA. Test scores are optional, even for merit.

Automatic Merit FAQs (Sacred Heart University)
What are SHU’s merit scholarships?
There are four: the President’s Excellence Award, the Trustee Scholarship, the College Scholarship, and the Conley Award. Together they range from $6,000 to $20,000 a year.
How does SHU decide who gets which one?
SHU’s Scholarship Review Committee reads the high school transcript and class rank. Course selection and overall GPA carry the most weight. SHU doesn’t publish cutoffs, so there’s no chart to aim for. A tougher schedule with strong grades is the best move.
Do test scores help with merit?
They aren’t required. SHU says every merit and need-based program is available whether or not your student submits SAT or ACT scores. Send them only if they make the application stronger.
Is there a scholarship deadline?
There’s no separate one, but the money is limited and awarded first-come, first-served. In practice, “early” is the deadline. The earliest aid priority dates are Nov 15 for Early Decision I and Dec 1 for Early Action I.
Are these scholarships renewable?
Yes, for four years (eight semesters) of full-time undergraduate study. Your student has to keep the cumulative GPA set for their specific scholarship, which will be spelled out in the award paperwork.
Will the amount go up later?
No. Merit is awarded only at admission, and SHU says not to expect increases. If your student is in a 3+3 or 4+1 dual-degree track, merit covers the eight undergraduate semesters. Graduate-phase years are priced separately.
Can merit be combined with other aid?
Yes. Merit combines with SHU need-based grants (CSS Profile required) and with Early Decision perks. Total gift aid can’t exceed the cost of attendance.
Sacred Heart does not run a competitive freshman scholarship program. There’s no essay contest, no finalist weekend, and no full-ride competition. All freshman merit comes through the admission review. The closest thing to “competitive” money is an invitation to the Thomas More Honors Program, which goes to roughly the top 15% of applicants.

If your student is hunting for a full-tuition competition with essays and interviews, SHU isn’t that school. SHU’s value comes from transcript-based merit, need-based grants for families who file the CSS Profile, and a handful of add-ons. It works best for students who apply early and stack every small piece.
This institution does not offer designated Competitive scholarships at this time.
❓ Competitive Scholarship FAQs
Does Sacred Heart offer full-tuition or full-ride scholarships?
Not through an SHU competition for freshmen. The main outside route to full tuition is an Air Force ROTC scholarship, available to SHU students through a crosstown program with Yale’s detachment. The Air Force, not SHU, awards it, and it doesn’t cover room and board.
Can we ask SHU to raise our merit award?
SHU says merit is awarded only at the time of admission. If your family’s finances changed, talk with Student Financial Assistance about your need-based aid instead.
Does SHU give athletic scholarships?
Yes. SHU competes in NCAA Division I, and Intercollegiate Athletics is one of its activity-based aid programs. That money runs through coaches, so start the conversation with the program early.
What’s the most competitive money at SHU?
An Honors Program invitation. It goes to about the top 15% of freshman applicants, arrives with the acceptance letter, and adds scholarship money on top of merit.
If SHU is truly your student’s first choice, Early Decision comes with extras regular applicants don’t get:
A $1,000 Welcome Home Grant for the first year.
One free intersession course (SHU values it at about $2,000).
A $1,000 grant toward a semester or short program at SHU’s campus in Dingle, Ireland.
A guaranteed double room option and priority registration every semester.
Parent translation: that’s roughly $4,000 in value. ED is binding, but SHU says it will release your student if enrolling isn’t financially feasible. Run the net price calculator first, schedule the required interview, and then decide.
💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships
These are the smaller pieces most families never hear about. Some are automatic if you check a box or file a form. Others depend on your admission plan, your family, or what your student does on campus. None of them is huge on its own, but together they can close a real gap.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
We’ll have two kids at SHU at the same time. Is there a discount?
Yes. SHU’s Family Discount Allowance reduces tuition when two or more immediate relatives are full-time undergraduates in the same semester. SHU doesn’t publish the amount. You have to file the form at least a week before registration, every semester.
My student graduated from a Catholic high school. Is there extra money?
There used to be. SHU’s 2024-25 catalog mentioned an additional grant for Catholic high school graduates, but it isn’t in the current catalogs. Ask your admissions counselor directly whether it applies to your student’s entering year.
Is there still a valedictorian or salutatorian scholarship?
SHU last published a $2,500 award for both in its 2024-25 catalog, and it doesn’t appear in newer catalogs. If your student ranks first or second, make sure the school counselor reports it, and ask admissions whether the award is still offered.
We live nearby. Is there help for commuters?
Yes. The Curtis Commuter Grant helps students who live at home and commute. It’s need-based, so file the CSS Profile and FAFSA, and it renews for up to four consecutive years.
Can band, choir, theatre, or dance help pay for SHU?
Yes. SHU has activity-based grants for athletics, Pioneer Bands, University Choir, Theatre Arts, University Dance, community service, student leadership, RAs, and more. Amounts vary, and staying involved is what keeps the money coming.
Is there money after freshman year?
Yes. SHU invites qualifying sophomores, juniors, and seniors to apply for donor-funded endowed scholarships. Tell your student to watch for that email from Student Financial Assistance and actually apply.

Data last verified Sep 28, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.
*SHU’s current Honors page promises a “generous merit scholarship” but doesn’t list the amount. The last published figure was an additional $2,000 a year (2024-25 catalog). Confirm the number on your award letter.
Date to Watch: To get honors housing, your student has to commit to SHU and the Honors Program by April 1. That’s a month before the regular May 1 deposit date, so decide early if the invitation comes.

Honors Program FAQs (Sacred Heart University)
Do we have to apply to Honors separately?
No. Every freshman applicant is reviewed automatically, and invitations go out with acceptance letters.
How selective is it?
SHU says an invitation represents about the top 15% of the applicant pool, and space is limited.
Do test scores matter for Honors?
SHU is test-optional. Its 2024-25 catalog noted that students could submit scores if they wanted them considered for Honors. If your student has strong scores, sending them is a reasonable move.
How much is the Honors scholarship?
SHU’s current pages don’t state an amount. It was last published as an extra $2,000 a year on top of the regular merit award. Your award letter will show the real number.
Are Honors classes harder?
SHU says the content isn’t necessarily more difficult. The classes are smaller and more discussion-based, and students take more ownership of the work.
Sacred Heart is a Catholic university in Fairfield, Connecticut, about an hour from New York City. It’s grown fast, and it now has more than 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The best way to think about SHU is as a career-launch school. Its most popular majors point straight at jobs: finance and business economics, exercise science, nursing, marketing, and psychology. SHU also reports that nearly all undergraduates are working or in grad school within a year of graduating.
Nationally Known Program: Jack Welch College of Business & Technology. Named for the former GE chief executive, SHU’s business school was named one of Poets&Quants’ best undergraduate business schools for 2026. Finance and marketing are two of SHU’s top five majors. One heads-up for parents: business majors pay a $750-per-semester program fee starting sophomore year.
Nursing: The Davis & Henley College of Nursing runs one of SHU’s biggest undergraduate programs. Nursing applicants must meet the Early Decision or Early Action deadlines.
Health Professions and dual degrees: Exercise science is a top major, and SHU offers accelerated paths into physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physician assistant programs. About 35% of recent freshmen are in dual-degree programs, which can save a year or more of tuition.
Psychology: One of SHU’s five most popular majors and a common launch point for counseling and graduate work.
Communications & Media: The School of Communication, Media & the Arts shares a building with the business school and runs hands-on programs in sports media, strategic communication, and film.
A campus in Ireland: SHU owns a global campus in Dingle, Ireland, with winter, summer, and semester options. Early Decision admits get a $1,000 grant toward it.

Big picture? Sacred Heart is a career-focused Catholic university with a strong business school, a big nursing and health sciences pipeline, and a campus in Ireland. The money works differently than at a lot of schools. Merit comes from the transcript, not test scores. It’s handed out first-come, first-served, and it never goes up. The real sticker price, with the required meal plan, health insurance, and program fees, is higher than the tuition line suggests.
SHU works best for families who move early. That means applying on an early plan, filing the CSS Profile and FAFSA by that plan’s date, and picking up every smaller piece: the Family Discount, the Early Decision perks, Honors money, and activity grants. If SHU is your student’s clear first choice, run the net price calculator and take a hard look at Early Decision. The perks are real, and SHU will release you if the numbers don’t work.

Your kid did everything right. That does not mean the money follows.
Most families build a college list first and think about scholarships second, which is backwards. This free four-part series shows you where the money actually comes from, and how to build a list around it.
