Purdue University Scholarships (2026–2027)

Purdue is the rare big-name engineering school where the price behaves. Tuition has not gone up in fourteen straight years, and the Board of Trustees locked it again for 2026–2027 at its June 2026 meeting. Indiana residents pay the same base tuition their neighbors paid in 2012. That is genuinely unusual and it is the main reason Purdue shows up on so many affordability lists.

But the freeze covers base tuition, and most families reading this page are not coming to Purdue for a base-rate major. They are coming for engineering, computer science, business, nursing or aviation, and every one of those carries a differential fee on top of the headline number. We break that out in the cost section below, because it is the difference between planning for $28,794 and planning for $32,844.

Purdue’s tuition freeze is real and it is remarkable. What the freeze does not cover is the differential fee attached to Purdue’s most popular colleges. These are published on the Bursar’s 2026–2027 fee page and they are charged on top of the base tuition in the table above.

Purdue raised the engineering, computer science and business differential fees by $1,000 per semester for nonresident and international students entering in fall 2026 or later. Indiana residents were not affected, and neither were students already enrolled before fall 2026. That is why the out-of-state differential runs exactly $2,000 a year higher than the in-state one. If you are reading an older Purdue cost breakdown, this is the line that changed.

The Boiler Gold Grant covers tuition, fees and books as last-dollar aid for up to eight semesters if you are Pell eligible or your family AGI is $80,000 or less. That ceiling is higher than most families assume. Purdue Promise layers on top of the Indiana 21st Century Scholarship to cover housing, food, books and transportation. Both require a FAFSA by April 15, and Indiana enforces that date hard.

📅 The Purdue Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

• Oct. 1: FAFSA opens. Purdue’s federal school code is 001825.
• Nov. 1: Firm deadline. A complete application gets you admission review, all five university-wide merit awards, and Honors College consideration in one shot.
• Dec. 15: Priority deadline for the Departmental Scholarship Application in Scholarship Universe. This is a separate step.
• Mid-March: Financial aid notifications begin for admitted students who filed a FAFSA.
• April 15: FAFSA priority filing date. Indiana residents must hit this date to stay eligible for state aid, Purdue Promise and the Boiler Gold Grant.

Parent rule of thumb: at Purdue, Nov. 1 is not a suggestion and Dec. 15 is not optional. Treat both as hard.

🧠 How to Read Purdue Merit If You Have Been Shopping Alabama-Style Schools

At a stats-grid school, a 3.8 and a 32 buys a known number and you can plan on it in September of senior year. Purdue does not work that way. There is no chart. Two students with identical transcripts can get $16,000 and $0, and the difference lives in the essay, the rigor of the senior schedule, the activity list, and how competitive that year’s pool is for that specific major.

Practically, that means two things. First, the application itself is the scholarship application, so treat the essay and the Purdue-specific questions as money documents, not admissions paperwork. Second, do not put Purdue in the “safety with big merit” column on your family spreadsheet. Put it in the column where you budget for full cost and treat any award as upside.

💰 What the Awards Actually Do to the Bill

Housing, food and any differential fee still apply on top. Purdue caps total aid at published cost of attendance, so a large award can reduce other aid rather than stacking on it.

Purdue and the Indiana University School of Medicine launched a Baccalaureate-Doctor of Medicine (B-MD) program at the IU School of Medicine West Lafayette campus in fall 2024, and it is open only to Beering and Stamps applicants. Students are accepted independently into Purdue, the Honors College and the medical degree program, with a commitment to the West Lafayette campus for all of medical school.

The additional bar is specific: applicants must be Indiana residents with a minimum combined SAT of 1390 or an ACT composite of 31. Acceptance is provisional and depends on GPA, MCAT, coursework and professionalism requirements along the way. For an Indiana family with a strong pre-med student, this is one of the highest-value pathways in the state and it runs entirely through the Nov. 1 Honors application.

How do I apply for the Beering or the Stamps?
You do not, at least not directly. Apply to Purdue West Lafayette through the Common App and complete the John Martinson Honors College portion by Nov. 1. Purdue runs a preliminary holistic evaluation and invites a select group to apply for its prestigious merit awards. That invitation is the only door in.

How many are given?
Roughly 15 Beering Scholars and somewhere around 5 to 10 Stamps Scholars per year, out of an applicant pool that runs past 78,000. Treat these as lottery-adjacent and apply because the cost of applying is a Nov. 1 deadline you were hitting anyway.

What does the Beering actually cover?
It is one of the most comprehensive packages in American higher education. Standard cost of attendance for one bachelor’s degree, one master’s degree or MBA, and one doctoral degree at Purdue, or medical school through Indiana University, plus a one-time study abroad opportunity during the undergraduate years. Scholars stay in the Honors College throughout.

What does the Stamps cover?
Full educational cost of a bachelor’s degree plus up to $10,000 in enrichment funds for summer research internships, academic conferences, Purdue study abroad and unpaid internships or co-ops. Scholars also join the national Stamps community, which is a real professional network rather than a line on a certificate.

Do I have to be a U.S. citizen?
U.S. citizen or permanent resident for both awards.

Is Purdue a Stamps partner?
Yes. Purdue established its Stamps Scholarship in 2011 and the first scholars enrolled that fall. Some older scholarship databases have this wrong.

What happened to the Presidential Distinguished and Trustees Distinguished scholarships?
Neither appears on Purdue’s current scholarship page. They may have been restructured, renamed or retired. We have pulled them from this guide rather than list awards we cannot verify. If a counselor or third-party site tells you to apply for one, confirm with Purdue Admissions first.

🧠 Parent Strategy: Purdue’s Two-Application Rule

Getting admitted to Purdue does not mean you applied for all the money. The Nov. 1 admission application handles the five university-wide awards. College and department money runs through a separate Departmental Scholarship Application in Scholarship Universe, with a Dec. 15 priority deadline. Two deadlines, two applications, six weeks apart.

1. Submit the complete admission application by Nov. 1.
2. Wait two to three business days. That is how long it takes for your Scholarship Universe account to open after you apply.
3. Log into Scholarship Universe and complete the Departmental Scholarship Application before Dec. 15.
4. Search departmental awards tied to the intended major, then affinity and alumni-club awards.
5. File the FAFSA by April 15. Several college-level awards carry a need component, and Indiana state aid dies at that date.

Parent translation: skip Dec. 15 and you can still get a Trustees award, but you will never see the departmental money that closes the gap on housing and fees.

Purdue’s own deadline page says it is “currently enhancing the scholarship application experience for both incoming and current students,” with more information due in October. The Dec. 15 priority date and the FAFSA dates are firm. The exact portal steps may shift. Check the Division of Financial Aid site in October rather than trusting any walkthrough written before then, including this one.

What is the single highest-value thing an Indiana family can do?
File the FAFSA by April 15 and check whether you clear the Boiler Gold Grant threshold. It covers tuition, fees and books as last-dollar aid for up to eight semesters if you are Pell eligible or your family AGI is $80,000 or less. The $80,000 ceiling catches a lot of families who assume they earn too much to qualify for anything. It now covers incoming resident freshmen at Purdue Indianapolis as well as West Lafayette.

What is the difference between Purdue Promise and the 21st Century Scholarship?
This trips up almost everyone. The Indiana 21st Century Scholarship covers tuition and regularly assessed fees. Purdue Promise is the gap scholarship layered on top, covering housing and food, books, transportation and miscellaneous costs. Together they can bring a qualifying family close to full cost of attendance. Promise also comes with a required support program including a Student Success Coach and Boiler Gold Rush, whose $375 fee Purdue covers.

Can current Purdue students still get these?
Yes, and this is where the leadership awards live. The Class of 1937 Scholarship and the Charles O. McGaughey Leadership Award are both for continuing students at West Lafayette or Indianapolis with a 3.0 GPA. The McGaughey requires no recommendation letters, which removes the most common reason these applications never get finished. Both cycles open in November with deadlines historically in mid-January.

My student did 4-H. Is there anything there?
There is, and Purdue barely publicizes it. The Division of Financial Aid receives a list of eligible students each February from the Department of Youth Development and Agricultural Education based on 4-H achievement, and applies a State 4-H Club Fee Remission. There is no application on your end and Purdue does not publish the dollar value. If your student did 4-H in any of Indiana’s 92 counties, it costs one phone call to Financial Aid at 765-494-5050 to ask.

Do I have to be a music major for the band and orchestra awards?
No. Purdue’s Bands and Orchestras performance awards are open to all undergraduates, not just music majors, and consistent participation improves your odds in later years. Auditions typically run in the December to February window. For a strong high school musician heading into engineering, this is free money attached to something they were going to do anyway.

What about the alumni club and affinity scholarships?
Purdue Alumni Club awards are set by each local chapter, with amounts and deadlines that vary by region and typically fall between January and March. The Purdue Black Alumni Organization also administers two awards through the Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette. Worth knowing about those two: there is no open application portal, deadlines are listed on the application itself, and qualifying students receive the application by email. Call the Purdue Alumni Association at 800-414-1541 rather than hunting for a form.

What if I miss Dec. 15?
It is a priority deadline rather than a hard close for every individual award, but colleges award in rounds starting in February with notifications in mid-March, and money awarded in round one does not come back. Some colleges also run separate spring cycles for continuing students. Contact your student’s college scholarship office directly after admission rather than assuming the portal is the whole story.

There is a second door. Current Purdue students can apply to the JMHC with a 3.3 cumulative GPA and at least four semesters of study remaining. The application opens in November and closes January 30, with decisions in March. Students can also take an HONR course or honors-contract a class beforehand with just a 3.0 GPA, which is a low-risk way to see whether the curriculum fits before committing.

Purdue University in Indianapolis is a full part of the main campus now, not a branch or a regional. It runs its own engineering majors including motorsports engineering, has its own Honors College presence, and carries the Indy Scholars award at a minimum of $10,000 a year from a smaller applicant pool. Families treating it as a consolation prize are leaving money and a legitimate degree path on the table.
