Northwestern is one of the hardest schools in the country to get into, and one of the most misunderstood when it comes to money. Roughly eight percent of applicants get in. The middle half of enrolled students scored between 1510 and 1560 on the SAT or between 34 and 35 on the ACT. Almost four out of five first-year students come from outside Illinois, which matters here in a way it does not at a public flagship: there is no in-state discount to chase, because Northwestern is private and charges every family the same published rate.
Here is the thing families need to hear first. Northwestern does not give academic merit scholarships. Not small ones, not competitive ones, not a National Merit package. The university says so plainly on its own admissions site, and its Common Data Set backs it up: the only non-need criteria it uses for institutional aid are athletics and music or drama talent. If your student has a 4.0 and a 35 and you were hoping that turns into a discount, it will not. It turns into an admission decision.
What Northwestern offers instead is one of the strongest need-based programs in American higher education. It meets one hundred percent of demonstrated need with no loans packaged in. Most families earning under $70,000 attend at no cost. Most families earning under $150,000 attend tuition-free. More than sixty percent of undergraduates receive aid, and the university spent north of $250 million on it last year. Even families above $150,000 qualify about forty percent of the time. - There are three forms, not two. FAFSA and CSS Profile are due first. Then tax materials go through IDOC four to five days later. Families file the first two, exhale, and miss the third.
- Early Decision means your aid forms are due December 1. Your application goes in November 1, but the money paperwork lands a month later, before you have committed. Do the Net Price Calculator in the summer, not in December.
- Health insurance is a $5,996 surprise. NU-SHIP is not included in the published cost of attendance, and students are automatically enrolled every single year unless someone actively waives it during the open window.
- Moving off campus will not save you money. There is a two-year live-on requirement, and Northwestern budgets the same housing figure whether you live in a dorm or an apartment.
- Named scholarships usually replace, they do not add. When your award letter shows an endowed fund or the NAIS scholarship, that money takes the place of an equal amount of the general Northwestern grant. The total does not change.
- The QuestBridge door closes October 1. That is a full month before Early Decision and it is the most generous path into the school. If it applies to your family, the decision gets made in the summer.

Northwestern requires every full-time student to carry health insurance, and it enrolls students in the university plan (NU-SHIP) automatically at the start of fall term. The 2026-27 premium estimate is $5,996, and it is not included in the cost of attendance figures above. If your family already has coverage that meets the university minimum, you have to file a waiver during the open enrollment window. Every year. Waiving last year does not carry over. Two things work against the usual sophomore-year money-saving move. First, Northwestern has a two-year live-on requirement for incoming undergraduates. Second, when students do move off campus, the aid office uses the same housing and food figure it uses for dorm residents. On-campus and off-campus apartment budgets both come to $99,375. FAQ — Cost of Attendance at Northwestern University
Why is there no in-state price for Illinois families?
Northwestern is a private university. Private schools do not receive state subsidies tied to residency, so there is no resident and non-resident split. A family in Evanston and a family in Phoenix see the identical published rate. What changes your price at Northwestern is not where you live, it is what your financial aid analysis says you can pay.
Does Northwestern participate in any tuition reciprocity or waiver programs?
No. Regional programs like the Academic Common Market and the Western Undergraduate Exchange apply to public institutions. Northwestern has no equivalent. There is one geographic discount at the school, the Good Neighbor award for Chicago and Evanston high school graduates, and even that is need-based rather than a flat tuition break.
If the sticker price is $96,000, what do families actually pay?
The federal average net price, which is what families paid after grants and scholarships, is well under a third of sticker. Northwestern publishes averages by income band: families earning under $60,000 have averaged awards above $67,000, and even families above $150,000 who qualify have averaged around $31,000. Does Northwestern really meet full need without loans?
Yes, and it has since 2016. The university commits to meeting one hundred percent of demonstrated financial need for eligible undergraduates, and aid offers are built from grants, scholarships, a summer earnings expectation, and work-study. No loans are packaged in. That does not mean nobody borrows. Families who cannot cover the calculated family contribution still take out PLUS or private loans, and about twenty-nine percent of graduates leave with some debt. But the aid offer itself does not include loans.
Why does the tuition bill arrive three times a year instead of twice?
Northwestern runs on a quarter system: fall, winter, and spring. The published annual figures cover the standard three-quarter academic year, and the invoice comes each quarter. It is the same total, just split into three payments instead of two, which changes your cash-flow planning if you are used to a semester school.
Will the cost go up each year my student is enrolled?
Plan on it. Northwestern raised undergraduate tuition 3.5 percent for 2026-27, following a 3.3 percent increase the year before and 3.5 percent the year before that. Roughly three to four percent a year is a reasonable planning assumption. The offsetting piece is that need-based aid is recalculated every year against the new cost, so if your family circumstances stay steady, your grant generally rises with the price.
What if our financial situation changes after we file?
Northwestern has a Special Circumstances Review process for exactly this. Job loss, a medical event, a death in the family, or an unusual expense can all be submitted for reconsideration. This is not a negotiation over a merit offer, because there is no merit offer. It is a genuine reassessment of what your family can pay, and it is worth using.
Is a computer included in the cost of attendance?
Not automatically, but it can be added. If your student needs to buy one and does not already have a computer, the aid office can increase the cost of attendance to cover a one-time reasonable purchase, which may unlock additional grant or loan eligibility. Talk to them before you buy, not after.

Parent rule of thumb: at Northwestern, the aid deadline is the real deadline. There is no merit money to chase, so the only leverage your family has is filing complete and early.
Automatic Merit Scholarships — Northwestern University
Not for GPA. Not for test scores. Not for class rank. The university states on its own admissions site that it does not award scholarships based on academic merit, and its Common Data Set confirms that academics is not among the criteria it uses for non-need-based aid. In the most recent reporting year, zero first-year students received non-need-based scholarship or grant aid outside of athletics and talent awards.
We know that is not what most families want to hear, so let us be useful about it. Everything Northwestern gives out flows through demonstrated financial need. That is not a consolation prize. It is one of the most generous need programs in the country, and for a very large slice of American families it produces a smaller bill than the “merit” offers they will get from schools ranked well below Northwestern.
The one thing that is automatic here: file the FAFSA and the CSS Profile on time, and your student is automatically considered for every form of institutional aid Northwestern offers, including named endowed funds and every local-access award on this page. There is no separate scholarship application to hunt down. There is no scholarship portal to log into. The aid forms are the application.

At a school like Alabama or Arizona State, high stats convert directly into dollars off the bill. Does a 4.0 and a 1560 get us money at Northwestern?
No. It helps enormously with admission, and admission is the hard part. But there is no institutional award tied to grades or scores. The middle half of enrolled students already sits at 1510 to 1560, so high stats are the baseline at Northwestern rather than a differentiator worth paying for.
Does Northwestern offer a National Merit scholarship package?
No. Northwestern does not publish a National Merit Finalist award. Some students still receive corporate-sponsored or National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards that follow them to any school, and Northwestern will apply those, but the university itself does not fund a package.
Is Northwestern a Stamps Scholarship partner?

Should we still submit test scores if there is no merit money attached?
That is purely an admissions decision now, which actually simplifies it. Northwestern is test-optional and superscores both the SAT and the ACT for students who do submit. Submit if your scores strengthen the application. Skip them if they do not. Applying without scores does not affect your chances, and it has zero effect on aid either way.
Is QuestBridge an automatic award?
No, and this is worth being clear about. QuestBridge requires a separate application through QuestBridge itself, with essays and recommendations, and ranking Northwestern in the Match is binding. How long does aid last?
Institutional aid runs four years for a student who enters as a first-year and three years for a student who enters as a transfer. Students have to reapply each year and maintain satisfactory academic progress. 🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)
What exists instead is a very small non-need pool, and its two doors are audition rooms and athletic recruiting.
The Common Data Set is the cleanest way to see this. Northwestern reports the criteria it uses when awarding non-need-based institutional aid, and it checks exactly two boxes: athletics and music or drama talent. Academics, leadership, alumni relation, state residency, and minority status are all unchecked. In the most recent year, 15 first-year students with no demonstrated financial need received institutional non-need aid outside of athletics, averaging about $29,000. Another 99 first-years received athletic awards averaging about $53,131.
Fifteen students. That is the entire non-athletic merit pool at a university with roughly nine thousand undergraduates. It is not a program families can plan around, but it is real, and if your student is a serious musician it is worth knowing the audition is the scholarship application.

If your student is built for the essay-and-interview scholarship circuit, that energy is better spent on schools that run those competitions, or on national fellowships like Rhodes, Marshall, and Goldwater once they are enrolled. Northwestern actually places well in those, and its Office of Fellowships exists to help. But it happens after admission, not as a way to pay for it.

Is there any competitive scholarship we can apply for at Northwestern?
Not in the traditional sense. The two non-need paths are a Bienen School of Music audition and athletic recruiting, and neither works like a scholarship application you fill out in the fall of senior year. Music applicants register for auditions by mid-October. Athletic recruiting starts years earlier and runs through coaching staffs.
How many students get non-need money at Northwestern?

It does not appear on Northwestern current list of scholarships. Treat any third-party listing for a Northwestern award as unverified unless you can find it on undergradaid.northwestern.edu.
Can we appeal or negotiate an aid offer?
You can request a Special Circumstances Review. That is different from negotiating. Northwestern will reconsider your analysis if your financial picture changed or if the forms did not capture something real, like a job loss or a medical event. It will not raise an offer because a competitor school offered more merit, because Northwestern is not competing on merit.
What about departmental scholarships once we are enrolled?
Northwestern does not run a centralized departmental scholarship portal the way many big publics do. The post-enrollment money here is research and internship funding, not tuition scholarships. That is covered in the Hidden Gems section below, and there is more of it than most families expect.
Is Northwestern a QuestBridge partner?

Honors at Northwestern: There Is No Honors College
Northwestern does not have an honors college, and it does not report an honors program on its Common Data Set. If your family has been comparing honors colleges at big publics, where honors admission unlocks a scholarship tier, priority registration, and a separate dorm, none of that structure exists here.
What Northwestern has instead is a set of special admission majors and departmental honors tracks. These are academically selective, genuinely rigorous, and worth pursuing. But none of them carries its own tuition scholarship. Their financial value is indirect: earlier access to research, better faculty relationships, stronger fellowship outcomes, and in one case the ability to finish a degree in three years instead of four.
- Applied before you arrive: Integrated Science Program (ISP) and Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences (MMSS). Both require a separate application after you are admitted to Northwestern.
- Applied once you are here: American Studies, Legal Studies, and the English Major in Writing all admit by application in the spring. MMSS also takes about 15 sophomores each year with an April 1 deadline.
- Applied junior year: nearly every department runs an honors track ending in a senior thesis. International Studies is the example listed below, but ask about honors in whatever major your student lands in.
ISP students in Weinberg College can finish a bachelor degree in three years if they complete 38.7 units and all other college requirements by the end of year three. At a 2026-27 cost of attendance near $99,375 per year, skipping the fourth year is worth more than any scholarship discussed anywhere on this page. It is not the right call for every student, and it means giving up a senior year of campus life. But it is a real, published option, and families evaluating ISP should have that number in front of them.

Honors & Special Programs — FAQs (Northwestern University)
Does Northwestern have an honors college?
No. Northwestern reports no honors program on its Common Data Set. The comparable experience runs through special admission majors and departmental honors tracks, and it is decentralized rather than a single college with its own dean and dorm.
Do ISP or MMSS come with scholarship money?
No. Neither carries a tuition award. What they carry is early access to research labs, faculty mentorship, and a track record of feeding fellowship and graduate school placements. If you are evaluating them financially, evaluate them on outcomes and on the ISP three-year path, not on a scholarship line.
What is MMSS actually, and can my student major in it alone?
MMSS is an adjunct major, meaning it must be paired with a stand-alone major in a social science or another approved field. Students take a coordinated 12-course quantitative sequence in their first two years alongside their primary major, and everyone writes a senior thesis. It is not a degree by itself.
What if my student did not take calculus in high school?
Then apply for sophomore entry to MMSS instead. Take introductory calculus freshman year, then apply by April 1 in the spring. Northwestern admits roughly 15 sophomores a year this way, and they finish the MMSS sequence in years two and three.
Do these programs require test scores even though Northwestern is test-optional?
Possibly. Northwestern notes that ISP and MMSS have separate application and admission processes beyond general admission, and advises checking each program site for current requirements. Do not assume the university-wide test-optional policy carries over.
Can a student apply to ISP or MMSS after they enroll?

Are honors classes just more work?

⭐ College Specialty
Northwestern is unusual among elite private universities in that it is really six undergraduate schools sitting on one lakefront campus in Evanston, and your student applies to one of them. That structure shapes everything, including which programs are genuinely nationally known and which majors are easy or hard to switch into later. It is also why Northwestern feels bigger and more pre-professional than a comparable liberal arts university.
Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications — the most recognizable name in American journalism education. Medill is a full undergraduate school, not a department, and its signature feature is the Journalism Residency, a full quarter working in a professional newsroom or media organization for credit. Communication and journalism together account for about eleven percent of Northwestern bachelor degrees.
There is no undergraduate business school at Northwestern. Kellogg is a graduate school. Business and marketing account for about half of one percent of Northwestern bachelor degrees. Students interested in that direction typically major in economics, in MMSS, or in an industrial engineering track and pick up a Kellogg certificate program. If your student wants a BBA, this is the wrong school, and it is better to know that in October than in April.
- School of Communication (Theatre, RTVF, Performance): the single most famous undergraduate theatre pipeline in the country, with an alumni list in comedy, film, and Broadway that speaks for itself. Visual and performing arts make up about seven and a half percent of degrees.
- McCormick School of Engineering: about twelve percent of degrees. Materials science is the standout. The discipline was largely founded at Northwestern and the department has been at or near the top of national rankings for decades. Biomedical, chemical, and industrial engineering are also strong.
- Bienen School of Music: conservatory-level training inside a research university, and the one place where a non-need talent award is genuinely on the table. Auditions register by mid-October.
- School of Education and Social Policy (SESP): small, distinctive, and hard to find elsewhere. Blends education, human development, and policy with a required practicum. This is not a traditional teaching-certification program.
- Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences: the largest school and the home of the biggest majors. Social sciences lead at about seventeen and a half percent of degrees, followed by biological sciences at ten percent, computer science at nearly nine percent, and psychology at over seven percent.
- Undergraduate research culture: genuinely strong and genuinely funded. Northwestern operates a dedicated Office of Undergraduate Research with grant programs open to every major, and about half of all undergraduate class sections enroll fewer than ten students.

✅ Wrapping It Up
Northwestern is the school that punishes the wrong mental model and rewards the right one. If you walk in thinking “my kid has a 35, what will they pay us,” you will leave frustrated, because the answer is nothing. There is no merit money here. Fifteen first-year students a year get non-need institutional aid outside of athletics, and they get it in an audition room.
But if you walk in thinking “what will this actually cost my family,” Northwestern is one of the best answers in the country. One hundred percent of demonstrated need met. No loans in the package. Most families under $70,000 pay nothing. Most families under $150,000 pay no tuition. Even above $150,000, about four in ten qualify for something. The sticker price says $96,003 in direct costs for 2026-27, and the number most families actually pay looks nothing like that.
What that means practically is that all your leverage sits in the paperwork. Three forms, not two: FAFSA, CSS Profile, and then tax materials through IDOC a few days later. December 1 if you go Early Decision, February 1 if you go Regular. October 1 if QuestBridge fits your family, which is a full month earlier than everything else and the single most generous outcome on the board. Nobody at Northwestern is going to reward you for hustle. They are going to reward you for filing complete and on time.
Then there is the second wave that almost nobody counts. Once your student is enrolled, this campus is full of money that never appears on an admission letter: $4,000 for a research summer, $3,500 for an unpaid internship, up to $7,500 for study abroad, $10,000 to circle the globe as a junior, and project and travel grants across every major, not just the sciences. Just remember that SIGP and SURG cannot both be taken in the same summer, and that named endowed scholarships replace rather than add. Learn those two rules and your family will be ahead of most Northwestern parents.
Big picture: journalism, theatre, engineering, and a research culture that funds undergraduates in every field, wrapped around a need-based aid program that quietly makes an elite private education affordable for a much wider range of families than the price tag suggests. Just know going in that there is no undergraduate business school, no honors college, and no merit discount to chase.
