NAU is the friendliest admissions door of Arizona’s three public universities. Students who finish junior year on track to graduate with a 2.5+ core GPA are guaranteed admission, applications are rolling (no early action or early decision), and about 9 out of 10 applicants get in. The money side is just as simple: merit is based on your student’s unweighted core GPA, with no essay and no test score needed.
The big news is for out-of-state families. Starting with Fall 2027 freshmen, NAU cut non-resident tuition from $30,000 to $16,000 a year. That makes it one of the more affordable out-of-state options in the West.
🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Northern Arizona University (Read This First)
The out-of-state price changed for Fall 2027. Tuition is now $16,000 a year for every non-resident on the Flagstaff campus, whether you come in through WUE or NAU’s new Flagstaff Advantage Rate. Older articles and calculators may still show $30,000.
Merit now comes with a housing rule. Starting Fall 2027, students who get a merit scholarship must live in NAU housing with a meal plan their first year. Budget for it.
Test scores don’t move the money. NAU’s automatic scholarships use the unweighted GPA from 14 core high school classes. A great ACT won’t bump your student up a tier.
The November 15 date on the card is for Honors money, not regular merit. Students who apply to the Honors College by November 15 are considered for a limited $1,000 Honors scholarship. The catch: your student has to be admitted to NAU before they can open the Honors application, so apply to NAU early.
NAU tuition awards don’t stack. Your student gets one tuition scholarship. The only exception is the $5,000 IB Diploma award, which sits on top.
Locking in merit has three steps. Accept the admission offer, pay the enrollment fee, and send final high school transcripts right after graduation.

Average net price? About $16,544/year after aid.
Does this school use waivers/reciprocity?

That is $4,380 more per year than Arizona residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.
Average federal net price: $16,544 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. 📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options
New for Fall 2027: every out-of-state freshman on NAU's Flagstaff campus pays $16,000 a year in tuition, down from $30,000. Students from the 14 WUE states get this rate through the Western Undergraduate Exchange. Everyone else gets it through NAU's Flagstaff Advantage Rate (FAR). There is no extra form for either one.
Both groups also get the same automatic merit scholarship of $2,500 to $6,500 a year, based on core GPA. The $16,000 rate applies to the Flagstaff campus only. NAU's other Arizona campuses and online programs are priced separately.
How we built these numbers
The tuition rows use the rates Fall 2027 freshmen will actually pay: $12,000 for Arizona residents and $16,000 for out-of-state students, plus NAU’s published 2026-27 fees ($2,377 in-state, $2,757 out-of-state). NAU will post 2027-28 fees in the spring. Housing and meals ($15,805) is NAU’s estimate for a double room and the largest meal plan. Room rates alone run from $5,682 for a discounted triple to $9,994 for a private Honors suite, so a smaller meal plan or cheaper hall can bring that number down.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Northern Arizona University
How much is NAU out-of-state tuition for Fall 2027?
$16,000 a year for new non-resident undergraduates on the Flagstaff campus, down from $30,000. Fees, housing, and meals are extra. Every out-of-state freshman also gets an automatic merit scholarship of $2,500 to $6,500 a year on top of that rate.
Is WUE still worth anything at NAU?
WUE still gets you the $16,000 rate, but starting in Fall 2027 so does NAU’s Flagstaff Advantage Rate for students from every other state. The scholarships are identical too. In practice, a student from Colorado and a student from Texas now pay the same tuition. Neither one needs a separate form.
Do freshmen have to live on campus?
If your student gets a merit scholarship (and nearly every admitted freshman does), yes. Starting Fall 2027, NAU requires merit recipients to live in NAU housing with a meal plan their first year to keep the four-year award. About 86% of NAU freshmen already live on campus.
What’s the cheapest way to live on campus?
Room rates for 2026-27 start at $5,682 for a discounted triple in Allen or Wilson Hall and $7,320 for a traditional double. Meal plans for 2026-27 run about $2,874 to $3,642 a semester, depending on how many swipes you pick. Housing applications open November 1 and rooms are assigned in the order applications come in, so earlier is better.
What does the average family actually pay?
The federal average net price is about $16,544 a year after grants and scholarships. Arizona families earning $65,000 or less can qualify for full tuition through Access2Excellence, and Pell-eligible Arizona students can get remaining tuition and fees covered through the Arizona Promise Program.
Does tuition stay the same all four years?
Not guaranteed. The Arizona Board of Regents sets tuition every year. Merit scholarships are fixed dollar amounts that renew for up to four years with a 2.0 GPA and full-time enrollment, so any tuition increase comes out of your pocket.
Fall of senior year: Apply to NAU. Decisions are rolling, and automatic merit is figured from the application.
November 15: Honors College application deadline for the $1,000 Honors Merit Scholarship (must be admitted to NAU first).
October 1 to April 1: File the FAFSA. April 1 protects Access2Excellence eligibility; NAU’s general preferred date is April 15.
January to April 15: ScholarshipUniverse general application for donor and department scholarships.
May 1: Accept the offer and pay the enrollment fee. This is what locks in the merit award.
Parent rule of thumb: automatic merit doesn’t have a “beat this date” deadline, but Honors money and need-based aid do. Treat November 15 and April 1 as your real deadlines.
Automatic Merit Scholarships: Northern Arizona University
Every admitted freshman gets an automatic tuition scholarship based on one number: the unweighted GPA from 14 core high school courses (English, math, lab science, social science, and fine arts or CTE). No essay, no separate application, and test scores are not used. Arizona residents and out-of-state students are on different scales, shown in the cards below.

Note: These awards cover tuition only, in fall and spring. Students get one NAU tuition scholarship, and the $5,000 IB Diploma award is the only one that stacks on top. Starting Fall 2027, keeping a four-year merit award requires living in NAU housing with a meal plan the first year.
Does the Lumberjack Scholars Award cover full tuition?
Almost. It’s $11,000 a year, and Arizona resident tuition is $12,000, so families still owe about $1,000 in tuition plus fees, housing, and meals. It’s NAU’s top automatic award for Arizona residents with a 3.75+ core GPA.
What are Summit, Peak, Ascent, and Trailhead?
These are NAU’s new out-of-state merit tiers starting Fall 2027: $6,500 (3.75+), $6,000 (3.50 to 3.74), $5,000 (3.00 to 3.49), and $2,500 (any admitted student below 3.00). WUE students and Flagstaff Advantage Rate students get the same amounts.
How does NAU figure the core GPA?
NAU uses an unweighted 4.0 scale across the 14 core courses it requires for admission: four years each of English and math, three of lab science, one of American history, one more social science, and one of fine arts or career and technical education. Honors and AP bonus points don’t count, so an A in AP Chemistry is worth the same 4.0 as an A in regular chemistry.
Does my student need to submit an ACT or SAT for money?
No. NAU states that test scores are not required for scholarship consideration, and the merit tiers are based on GPA alone.
How does the President’s IB scholarship work?
Students who earn the full IB Diploma (24+ points with CAS completed) get $5,000 a year on top of their regular merit tier, up to the out-of-state portion of tuition. It’s open to Arizona residents and out-of-state students, with nothing extra to file.
My student did Academic Decathlon. Is that extra money?
Possibly not. The Arizona Academic Decathlon award is $2,000 a year for Arizona residents with two years of competition. It can’t be combined with other NAU tuition scholarships, and every admitted Arizona resident already gets at least $2,500. Ask NAU how it applies to your student.
How do students keep the award?
Keep a 2.0 cumulative NAU GPA and stay full-time (12+ credits each semester). Awards renew for up to eight semesters. If something goes wrong, NAU accepts a Scholarship Reinstatement Request.
NAU is mostly an automatic-money school. It doesn’t run a big essay-and-interview scholarship competition for incoming freshmen. The one major exception is for Arizona’s top seniors: NAU gives its own full-tuition award to students named Flinn Scholarship Semifinalists or higher.
The Flinn Scholarship itself is run by the Flinn Foundation, not NAU. It’s a full ride worth more than $140,000 at ASU, NAU, or the University of Arizona. Only about 20 seniors win it each year out of more than 1,000 applicants. The part many families miss is that you don’t have to win Flinn to get NAU’s award. Making the Semifinalist round is enough.

No. The Dorrance Scholarship Program is no longer accepting applications, and its current freshman class is the last one selected. First-generation Arizona students should look at NAU’s First Scholars Program and Access2Excellence instead (see Hidden Gems).
Does NAU offer a National Merit package?
Not anymore for new students. NAU’s financial aid office says 2024-25 was the last year its National Scholars Award was available to incoming freshmen.
🧠 Parent Strategy: The FAFSA Is NAU’s Real Scholarship Application
NAU’s biggest hidden money for Arizona families isn’t a scholarship you write an essay for. It’s need-based aid that NAU stacks to cover full tuition, and the FAFSA is the only application.
File the FAFSA (NAU code 001082) as soon as it opens October 1, and no later than April 1.
After admission, log into ScholarshipUniverse and complete the general application between January and April 15.
Answer every matching question so ScholarshipUniverse can match your student to department and donor awards.
First-generation Arizona student? Apply for First Scholars in April after accepting your offer.
Parent translation: merit arrives on its own, but the full-tuition paths only open if the FAFSA is in early.
💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships
These awards aren’t part of the automatic merit ladder. Several are need-based programs that can take an Arizona student’s tuition bill to zero, and the rest reward specific talents or commitments.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
Who qualifies for Access2Excellence (A2E)?
Arizona residents with household income of $65,000 or less, plus members of Arizona’s 22 federally recognized tribes no matter their income or home state. The FAFSA has to be in by April 1. A2E covers full tuition at the Flagstaff and statewide campuses (not online).
Is A2E extra money on top of merit?
No, it’s a promise about the total. NAU applies your merit scholarship first, then Pell and other grants, until tuition is covered. Grant money left after tuition can go toward fees, housing, and meals. NAU’s pages disagree on whether A2E covers fees for tribal members, so confirm with financial aid.
What’s the difference between A2E and the Arizona Promise Program?
A2E is NAU’s program based on income. Arizona Promise is state-funded and based on Pell eligibility. Promise covers whatever tuition, mandatory fees, and college fees are left after other aid, and NAU notes it can cover the Honors fee too. Many Pell-eligible students qualify for both.
What is First Scholars?
$2,000 a year for four years for first-generation Arizona students with financial need, plus mentoring and a built-in community. Applications open in April and close in May, and students apply after accepting their NAU offer.
How do music scholarships work?
Kitt School of Music scholarships come from the audition. Live audition dates for Fall 2027 run February 5 to March 27, 2027, and recorded auditions are accepted. Audition in February to be safe for full scholarship consideration.
Does NAU have ROTC?
Yes, both Army and Air Force ROTC. These scholarships are awarded through the military’s national process, so the deadlines follow their timelines, not NAU’s.
The NAU Honors College gives strong students small seminars, their own residence hall, and some one-of-a-kind experiences. The best known is the Grand Canyon Semester, a field-based semester that includes days on the Colorado River. Admission isn’t automatic. Students apply separately, and they have to be admitted to NAU first.
Minimum to apply: 3.0 unweighted core GPA, two essays, and a resume
Scholarship deadline: November 15 for the Honors Merit Scholarship
Housing priority: be admitted to Honors by February 1 to give yourself the best shot at the Honors residence hall
Honors fee: NAU lists $360 per semester, which Arizona Promise can cover for eligible students

Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Arizona Honors freshmen with real financial need after other aid, often first-generation or from underserved communities, who keep a 3.30+ GPA.
Data last verified Oct 21, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.
Continuing Honors students can apply for more than a dozen named Honors scholarships through the Honors College’s own application each February and March.
Deadline Note: Honors applications received by 11:59 pm on November 15, 2026 are considered for the Fall 2027 Honors Merit Scholarship. Your student can’t open the Honors application until NAU admits them, so if they haven’t applied to NAU yet, do it this week.
Honors Perks That Save Money
Flinn award: NAU’s Flinn award includes about $1,200 a year toward Honors fees.
Internship and research grants: Honors offers $2,000-per-semester nonprofit internship fellowships, community-based experience awards, and capstone grants.
Emergency help: the José Ángel Cruz fund gives Honors students up to $500 once for urgent needs.
Is Honors admission automatic for high-GPA students?
No. Every student applies with two essays and a resume, and Honors does turn students away. Test scores and GPA are considered but aren’t the only factors.
Why does NAU admission have to come first?
The Honors application requires an NAU login, which students only get after applying. Since Honors Merit money is tied to November 15, applying to NAU early in the fall is the real first step.
What is the Garcia Family Honors Scholars Program?
$4,000 a year for up to four years for Arizona Honors freshmen who still have financial need after other aid. The application opens in February 2027, and students hear back in mid-May. It can’t be held alongside the Flinn Scholarship but stacks with other awards.
Can out-of-state students join Honors?
Yes. Honors admission and the Honors Merit Scholarship are open to all admitted students. The Garcia award is for Arizona residents only.
Is the Honors residence hall guaranteed?
No. Honors admission doesn’t guarantee a spot, and rooms go in the order housing applications come in. Apply to Honors by February 1 and submit the housing application early.
NAU started in 1899 as a school for training teachers and grew into an R1 research university sitting at 7,000 feet in Flagstaff, next to the largest ponderosa pine forest in the world and about 80 miles from the Grand Canyon. That location isn’t just scenery. It shapes what NAU does best: programs that put students outside, in the field, and in the industries of the Southwest.
Nationally Known Program: School of Forestry: NAU has trained foresters since 1958, and students work in the surrounding Coconino National Forest instead of reading about it. Paired with the School of Earth and Sustainability, this is NAU’s signature for students who want careers in land management, wildfire, water, or climate work.
Hotel and Restaurant Management: One of NAU’s most recognizable programs, housed in the Franke College of Business and feeding Arizona’s huge tourism and resort industry.
Franke College of Business: About 15% of NAU’s bachelor’s degrees, with majors in accounting, finance, marketing, management, and information systems.
Health professions: Nursing through the Maria and Steve Sanghi College of Nursing, plus physical therapy and other health programs that together account for about 16% of degrees.
Education: NAU’s original mission. It still prepares a large share of Arizona’s teachers.
Engineering: The Steve Sanghi College of Engineering offers hands-on programs with a strong civil and environmental side.

Big picture? NAU is one of the most predictable deals in the West. If your student gets in, and most do, the merit money shows up automatically based on core GPA, with no essays and no test scores. Arizona families earning $65,000 or less can get tuition covered entirely through Access2Excellence, and Pell-eligible students can close the fee gap with Arizona Promise.
For out-of-state families, Fall 2027 changes the math. Every non-resident now pays $16,000 in tuition before a $2,500 to $6,500 scholarship, which puts net tuition between about $9,500 and $13,500 a year in a mountain college town with forestry, hospitality, business, and health programs that lead to real jobs. Just budget for the first-year housing requirement.
Your three moves: apply to NAU early so your student can hit the November 15 Honors deadline, file the FAFSA by April 1, and complete the ScholarshipUniverse general application by April 15.
