Niagara University Scholarships (2026–2027)

Niagara University is a small Catholic, Vincentian school on the bluffs above the Niagara River gorge, about 25 minutes from Buffalo and right across the river from Canada. Admissions is rolling and roughly 87% of applicants get in, so for most families the real question isn’t “can my kid get in?” It’s “what will Niagara actually put on the table?”

Here’s the short version. Nearly every freshman gets a merit award between $15,000 and $25,000 a year, decided at the same time as the admission decision. A handful of small add-ons can push that higher, up to a ceiling most families don’t hear about until the award letter shows up.

📌 Niagara University at a Glance

New full-time freshmen entering in the fall can lock tuition at $20,130 per semester for eight straight semesters. That’s $500 a semester more than the regular 2026-27 rate of $19,630, so your family pays about $1,000 extra in year one and then stops absorbing annual increases. If regular tuition climbs about 3% a year, our rough math says the lock comes out a little over $3,000 ahead across four years. That’s our estimate, not Niagara’s. The catch: you have to sign up by September 1 of freshman year, and Niagara says late requests aren’t accepted.

Niagara won’t let merit plus additional scholarships go above 75% of tuition and fees. With 2026-27 tuition and the student fee at $41,180, that ceiling is about $30,900. A Trustees’ Scholarship ($25,000) plus the Housing Grant ($2,500), an Area Grant ($2,000), and Eagle Experience ($1,250) comes to $30,750, which fits just under the line. Add a $1,000 Alumni Legacy award and you’re over, so Niagara reduces something. If your student is in the top merit tier, don’t count every small award twice.

📅 Niagara Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

• April 1 of junior year: Purple Eagle Leadership Award nominations are due. Yes, junior year.
• Fall of senior year: Attend any Niagara admissions event, in person or virtual. That’s step one of Eagle Experience.
• October 31, 2026: Eagle Experience application deadline for Fall 2027 freshmen.
• Rolling, at admission: Freshman merit (Trustees’ through NU Grant) arrives with the admission decision, usually 3 to 4 weeks after a complete application.
• January 15 to April 15: Sabres Scholars applications for incoming CoHST freshmen. The Merani Scholarship is also due April 15. (Both dates are from the 2026 cycle.)
• September 1: Last day for new freshmen to sign up for the Level Tuition Plan.

Parent rule of thumb: the admissions application has no deadline at Niagara, but the money does. Work backward from October 31.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

What does the Lois Lyon Brennan Scholars Program cover?
Full tuition, fees, books, a double room, and board for students living on campus, for up to four years. It’s Niagara’s only true full ride. Students need a high school average of 92 or higher, significant financial need, and real leadership in school and community. There’s no public application form, so contact your admissions counselor early and ask to be considered.

What’s the Purple Eagle Leadership Award, and why does it start in junior year?
It’s $25,000 a year plus a book award, renewable for four years, for a student with at least a 90 average and a track record of service and leadership. Families don’t apply. A counselor, teacher, community leader, or mentor nominates the student during junior year, and nominations are due April 1. If your student is a junior right now, this is the one to bring up with the school counselor.

How much is the Vincentian Scholarship worth?
Niagara describes it as an elite four-year program funded by the Glynn family, with a heavy focus on social justice and work alongside local community leaders. It doesn’t post the dollar amount on its scholarship page, so ask admissions directly. Scholars have to keep a high GPA and stay active in the program.

Who should apply for the NUSTAR Fellowship?
Students majoring in a natural science who want to start real lab research early. It pays a $6,000 yearly stipend plus a faculty-led research seminar, conference travel funding, and a shot at summer research money. Applicants need B or better grades in high school biology, chemistry, or environmental science, and they interview with faculty. Review starts February 1, and students must keep a 3.5 GPA.

Is there anything extra for Phi Theta Kappa transfers?
Yes. Every PTK Merit recipient can apply for an extra $3,000 a year. The application includes short essays and a recommendation letter, and Niagara awards only two per semester, so the writing matters.

Does Niagara offer athletic scholarships?
Yes. Niagara competes in NCAA Division I and offers athletic aid in 13 sports, including men’s ice hockey, women’s bowling, and women’s lacrosse. 🧠 Parent Strategy: Niagara’s “Second Search”

Getting admitted gets your student the merit award. It does not put them in the running for Niagara’s endowed scholarships. Those live in a separate system called the NU Scholarship Opportunity Search, inside myNU.

1. Once admitted, log into myNU and open the NU Scholarship Opportunity Search under “Systems.”
2. Search by intended major. The business college alone lists 15 named funds.
3. Apply early. In the most recent published cycle, the search opened January 1 and closed April 15.
4. Keep an eye on any need-based Monteagle Grant in the award letter. Niagara calls it a placeholder, and an endowed scholarship can replace part or all of it.

Parent translation: skip this step and your student still gets merit, but you leave the named-fund money for other families.

🎖 Army ROTC “3+1” at Niagara

Niagara hosts an Army ROTC program with an unusually good add-on. If your student wins a three-year National ROTC Scholarship, Niagara pays first-year tuition, which effectively makes it four. Niagara also provides free room and board while the student is on the ROTC scholarship. The application window for high schoolers runs from June of junior year through March of senior year.

What’s the Merani Scholarship?
It’s $7,500 a year for incoming hotel and restaurant management or tourism and recreation management majors, funded by Merani Hotel Group. Recipients train alongside Merani executives at their hotels on both sides of the falls. You’ll need the application, a resume, and two recommendation letters, and the 2026 deadline was April 15.

How do students get into the Sabres Scholars Program?
Niagara is the Buffalo Sabres’ exclusive higher education partner. Each year 10 incoming freshmen in the College of Hospitality, Sport, and Tourism Management, mostly sport management majors, get mentorship from the Sabres and LECOM Harborcenter plus a one-time $1,500 signing bonus. Some rising juniors land a paid Sabres internship. Applications ran January 15 to April 15 in 2026.

What’s a Monteagle Grant?
It’s Niagara’s need-based grant, awarded from the FAFSA one year at a time. Niagara is upfront that it’s a placeholder until endowed scholarships are assigned. If your student wins an endowed award, the total may not go up, because it can replace part of the Monteagle Grant. File the FAFSA every year.

Can a student cut housing costs after freshman year?
Yes, by becoming a Community Advisor. Sophomores and upperclassmen with at least a 2.5 GPA and prior residence hall experience can apply. The position comes with a grant equal to room plus half of the board charge, which is real money at more than $14,000 a year for room and board.

Do these count toward the 75% cap?
Niagara’s own awards do. Outside-funded scholarships like Merani may work differently, and Niagara doesn’t spell it out, so ask Financial Aid to show you the math when the award letter arrives.

The capstone is a year-long research project done one-on-one with a faculty member. For students headed to graduate school, law school, or competitive jobs, that’s something concrete to talk about in interviews, and Niagara’s honors alumni say exactly that.
