🧭 Why Hope’s Price Works Differently

Hope stacks three things most private colleges don’t. First, tuition is anchored: the full-time rate your student starts with is the rate they finish with. Second, every admitted first-year for fall 2027 gets the $12,000 More Hope Award automatically, on top of an academic tier worth $8,000 to $22,000. Third, about 40 students a year win Hope Forward, which covers full tuition in exchange for a promise to give back after graduation. Put together, the sticker price is a starting point, not the bill.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Hope College (Read This First)

  • Hope Forward replaces your merit. If your student accepts it, the academic scholarship and the More Hope Award go away. Full tuition still beats even the top merit stack, but it’s a swap, not an add-on.
  • Dec 1, not Dec 15. The Hope Forward application is due Dec 15, but the admission application has to be in by Dec 1 to be eligible. That’s two weeks ahead of Hope’s Early Action II deadline.
  • Feb 1 is the real merit deadline. It’s the date Hope needs a complete application to guarantee scholarship consideration, and the last day it accepts an updated GPA or new test scores.
  • Tuition is locked, merit is capped. The anchored rate holds for up to 10 years, but merit pays for only eight semesters. Any semester below full-time or out of good academic standing burns one of those eight for good.
  • Michigan families: list Hope first on the FAFSA. Hope says it must be the first school on the FAFSA for Michigan state aid like the Michigan Achievement Scholarship.
  • Test-optional has one exception. The $22,000 Trustee tier requires scores. Every other tier has a GPA-only path.

FAQ

Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. Hope College is test-optional for admission, but scholarships can work differently (see the next question).

Do you need test scores for scholarships at Hope College? Test-optional for admission and for four of five merit tiers. The top Trustee tier ($22,000) requires scores. Hope superscores ACT and SAT, including ACT section scores, and scores only help.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 25-31; SAT: 1130-1330.

Average net price? About $30,700/year after aid.

Does this school use waivers/reciprocity? No. It is a private school, so everyone pays the same rate.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Hope College: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in November 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Hope College has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $1,200 to $3,100 more than the total below.

✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

All students: billed cost per year
$61,380
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $46,980
Housing & meals (typical) $14,400
Total billed cost $61,380

Average federal net price: $30,700 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

⚓ Heads Up: Fall 2027 Students Lock In a Higher Rate

The table above shows Hope’s 2026 to 2027 numbers ($46,450 tuition for that year’s first-years). Hope has already posted the rate for students starting in fall 2027: $48,850 tuition, $7,200 housing, $7,400 food and a $540 fee, or $63,990 in billed costs. Under the Anchored Tuition Pledge, that $48,850 tuition rate stays the same all four years. Housing, food and fees are not locked and can rise.

Small heads up: Hope’s own 2027 to 2028 table lists tuition as $48,450, but the text on the same page says $48,850, and only $48,850 adds up to the $63,990 total. Plan on the higher number.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Hope College

Do out-of-state students pay more at Hope?
No. Hope is private, so a student from Ohio or Texas pays the same tuition as a student from Grand Rapids. The only difference in Hope’s official budget is travel: it adds $440 for Michigan residents and $1,090 for out-of-state students.

What does “anchored tuition” actually mean for our family?
The full-time tuition rate your student starts with is the rate they pay every year after that. Families with an upperclassman at Hope right now are paying anywhere from $37,990 to $43,450, depending on the year they started. The lock covers tuition only, so housing, food and fees can still go up, and it only applies when your student is enrolled full time (12 or more credits).

What will we actually pay after scholarships?
The federal average net price at Hope was about $30,700 a year, based on 2023 to 2024 data. That number came before the $12,000 More Hope Award existed, so families entering in fall 2027 should expect to pay noticeably less than that average if their student also earns an academic tier. Run Hope’s Net Price Calculator with your own numbers.

What’s the full cost of attendance, not just the bill?
For students who started in 2026, Hope’s financial aid office budgets $64,900 to $65,550 a year once you add books ($1,260), personal expenses ($1,780) and travel. That’s the number Hope uses to figure out need-based aid.

Is there any Michigan state money at a private college like Hope?
Yes. Recent Michigan high school graduates can use the Michigan Achievement Scholarship at Hope, and a few smaller state programs apply too. The catch: Hope says it must be the first school listed on your FAFSA. File early, too. Hope’s financial aid calendar uses July 1 as its date for guaranteed state aid consideration, but its other pages say March 1 and May 1, so March 1 is the safe target.

Can my student live off campus to save money?
Possibly, but Hope warns that living off campus or commuting can lower your need-based aid, because the aid budget drops to a $3,760 living allowance. Run the numbers before you sign a lease.

📅 Hope Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • Dec 1: Admission application in if your student wants a shot at Hope Forward.
  • Dec 15: Hope Forward application due.
  • January to March: Distinguished Artist Award auditions and portfolios (dates vary by art).
  • Feb 1: Merit deadline. Complete application, plus the last day for an updated GPA or new scores.
  • Mar 1: File the FAFSA (and list Hope first if you’re in Michigan).

Parent rule of thumb: if your student’s senior fall grades or a retake score could bump them up a tier, get it to Hope before Feb 1. After that, the tier is set.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at Hope College

Here’s how it works at the kitchen table: your student’s admission application is the scholarship application. Hope looks at GPA (and test scores, if sent) and drops your student into one of five academic tiers. Then every admitted first-year gets the $12,000 More Hope Award on top. So the real range is $20,000 to $34,000 a year for students who meet at least the Anchor benchmark. Hope superscores, and scores only help: you always get the higher of your GPA-only tier or your GPA-plus-scores tier.

Strategic Detail
Hope's renewal page confirms Hope sponsors college-funded National Merit Scholarships and adds a "National Merit Supplement." No amount is published on Hope's site; third-party figures ($17,000 to $18,000) are old. Hope does not say how it combines with the academic tier, so treat it as replacing rather than adding until your offer says otherwise.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: National Merit Finalists who list Hope as their first-choice college with NMSC. Hope does not publish the dollar amount, so ask admissions what the award plus Hope's National Merit Supplement adds up to.
Data last verified Nov 2, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Note: Each tier has two doors. For example, the Distinguished Scholar Award opens with a 3.8 GPA alone, or with a 3.6 GPA plus a 26 ACT or 1230 SAT. The one exception is Trustee, which always requires scores. Hope’s tier table was still labeled for Fall 2026 entrants when we checked in November 2026, so confirm the cutoffs on your student’s award letter.

Automatic Merit FAQs (Hope College)

Does the More Hope Award stack with the academic scholarship?
Hope presents it as a separate $12,000 award that every admitted fall 2027 first-year receives, on top of whatever academic tier your student earns. That’s how you get from $8,000 to $20,000 at the low end and from $22,000 to $34,000 at the top. Hope’s page doesn’t use the word “stack,” so double-check the award letter.

My student is test-optional. What’s the highest tier they can get?
Presidential, which starts at $14,000 with a 3.95+ GPA alone. Trustee ($22,000) is the only tier that requires test scores (a 34 ACT, 1490 SAT or 103 CLT with a 3.95+ GPA).

Does Hope superscore?
Yes. Hope superscores the ACT and SAT, including individual ACT section scores. If test scores are printed on your student’s high school transcript, Hope counts them automatically unless your student opts out.

What does it take to keep the scholarship?
Full-time enrollment and Satisfactory Academic Progress, Hope’s standard progress policy. There’s no special scholarship GPA like a 3.0 floor. But the award pays for only eight semesters, and every semester your student drops below full time or falls out of good standing costs one of those eight permanently.

Is there a National Merit scholarship?
Yes. Hope sponsors college-funded National Merit Scholarships and adds its own “National Merit Supplement.” Hope doesn’t publish the dollar amount, so if your student is a Finalist, list Hope as their first choice with NMSC and ask admissions what the combined package looks like.

Can these awards be used for study abroad?
Yes. Hope merit and the More Hope Award can be used for up to two semesters of Hope-approved off-campus study.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Hope has one big competitive award, and it’s unusual: Hope Forward. It covers full tuition, and instead of paying up front, recipients promise to give back to Hope every year after graduation, in whatever amount they choose. It’s open to any applicant with a 3.0 or higher GPA, and it’s chosen on essays, a reference and an interview, not test scores. Recent classes have been around 40 students.

⚖️ Hope Forward vs. Keeping Your Merit

If your student… Merit + More Hope (per year) Hope Forward (per year)
Earns Trustee $34,000 Full tuition plus the activity fee and required course fees, up to 16 credits a semester, for 8 semesters
Earns Distinguished Scholar $24,000
Earns Anchor $20,000
The strings attached Full time and good academic standing Same, plus 5 to 10 hours a month in the cohort and annual giving after graduation

Parent translation: Hope Forward replaces every other Hope scholarship. For a fall 2027 student facing $48,850 in tuition, it’s worth roughly $15,000 to $29,000 more per year than the merit stack, depending on the tier. Housing and food aren’t covered, but your student can still get need-based help for those if you file the FAFSA. The real question isn’t money. It’s whether your student wants a four-year community built around service and giving.

❓ Hope Forward FAQs

When is the deadline?
The Hope Forward application is due Dec 15, but the admission application must be in by Dec 1. First-round decisions come out in mid-January, followed by interviews in person or online.

How does my student apply?
Either inside the main application (Common App, the Hope App or Scoir) or through Hope’s separate Hope Forward form. They’ll need an essay answering the Hope Forward prompt and a reference form from someone who isn’t family.

Does “pay it forward” mean a loan?
No. Recipients commit to donating to Hope at least once a year after graduation, in an amount they choose. Nothing is repaid as a loan.

What does it not cover?
Housing, food, books, summer classes and any credits over 16 in a semester. It does cover tuition for up to two semesters of Hope-approved off-campus study.

Can my student still do athletics, music or Phelps Scholars?
Yes. Hope says Hope Forward doesn’t stop students from joining other programs, and it isn’t a separate dorm, so they can live wherever they’re assigned.

What if my student is a finalist but doesn’t win?
They keep their merit tier and More Hope Award. Hope’s renewal page also lists a “Hope Forward Interview Award,” which suggests some finalists receive something extra, but Hope doesn’t publish the terms. Ask your admissions rep.

🎭 Parent Strategy: The Arts Money Hides in Five Different Deadlines

Hope’s Distinguished Artist Awards usually stack on top of academic merit and More Hope, but each art has its own deadline, and none of them line up with the Feb 1 merit date. Put these on the fridge for fall 2027:

  • Music: apply by Jan 10 (Jan 18 audition) or Feb 14 (Feb 19 or 20 auditions).
  • Creative writing and visual arts: Feb 15.
  • Theatre: Mar 1, with DAA Day on Mar 5. Your student must visit campus by Mar 5.
  • Dance: Mar 22, with a video audition.

Parent translation: most of these are $3,000 a year for four years. That’s $12,000 over four years for a kid who was going to keep dancing, singing or writing anyway.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These aren’t automatic, and a few are only for specific students, but they’re real money that a lot of families never ask about.

Ask Your Admissions Rep About These

Hope’s scholarship renewal page names several awards it doesn’t advertise anywhere else, including the Road to Hope Award, RCA Award, Legacy and RCA Legacy Awards, Hope Heritage Award, Twins and Triplets Award, CBO Scholar Award and Covenant Scholarship. Hope doesn’t publish who qualifies or how much they pay, so we don’t list amounts. If your family belongs to a Reformed Church in America congregation, has a Hope alum, has twins heading to college or works with a college access organization, it’s worth a direct question.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Does my student have to major in the art to keep a Distinguished Artist Award?
It depends on the art. Creative writing, theatre and visual arts require a major or minor. Music requires staying in lessons and an ensemble. Dance just requires the 2.6 GPA. Every DAA requires at least a 2.6 Hope GPA.

Is there need-based money at Hope?
Yes. The Hope Grant is based on the FAFSA, has no GPA requirement and renews for up to eight semesters as long as need continues. Hope also says need-based aid may replace merit for semesters where a student loses eligibility.

We work at another college. Is there a tuition benefit?
If your college is part of the Council of Independent Colleges Tuition Exchange Program, Hope accepts up to three students a year tuition-free. Your student applies to Hope, gets admitted, then submits the CIC application. Hope notifies picks in late March.

What about international students?
Hope considers every international applicant for $25,000 to $35,000 a year automatically. Applications completed after Mar 1 are only considered if money is left, and Hope says families should plan to cover about $30,000 a year themselves.

Does Hope take the GI Bill or Yellow Ribbon?
Hope processes VA education benefits. Federal data lists Hope as a Yellow Ribbon school, but Hope’s own VA page tells families to contact financial aid to confirm, so call before you count on it.

Honors Programs at Hope College

Straight answer: Hope doesn’t have an honors college or a separate honors program with its own scholarships. The arts and humanities research program families sometimes hear about, the Mellon Scholars, has ended. At Hope, the “honors-level” money lives in the top merit tiers (Trustee and Presidential) and in Hope Forward, both covered above.

Honors Scholarships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

If Hope adds an honors-specific scholarship in the future, it will show up here automatically.

What High-Achievers Do at Hope Instead
  • Undergraduate research: U.S. News ranks Hope #22 nationally for undergraduate research and creative projects. Students work alongside professors, including during paid summer research.
  • Hope Forward cohort: the closest thing Hope has to an honors community, with seminars, retreats and a four-year cohort.
  • Phelps Scholars Program: a first-year program built around community and culture that any incoming student can apply to. It doesn’t come with a scholarship.

Honors FAQs (Hope College)

Is there an honors college my student should apply to?
No. Hope doesn’t have one, so there’s no separate honors application or deadline to track.

Then where does a top student’s extra money come from?
From the Trustee ($22,000) or Presidential ($14,000 and up) tier, plus the $12,000 More Hope Award, or from Hope Forward’s full tuition. A National Merit Finalist who lists Hope first also gets Hope’s National Merit package.

Is research only for science majors?
No. Science is where Hope is best known, but Hope’s yearly undergraduate research celebration includes arts, humanities and social science projects too.

⭐ College Specialty

Hope is a Christian liberal arts college of about 3,400 students in Holland, Michigan, ten minutes from Lake Michigan. It’s small enough that professors know your student by name, but it punches well above its size in two areas: hands-on research and the arts.

Nationally Known For:
Undergraduate research. U.S. News ranks Hope #22 in the country for undergraduate research and creative projects, alongside much bigger universities. At Hope, students don’t wait until grad school to work in a lab. Freshmen and sophomores regularly join faculty projects in chemistry, biology, neuroscience and other fields, and many spend paid summers doing research on campus.
  • The arts: Hope was the first private liberal arts college in the country to earn national accreditation in all four arts: art, dance, music and theatre. That’s why the Distinguished Artist Awards matter here.
  • Engineering: Unusual for a liberal arts college of this size. U.S. News ranks Hope’s undergraduate engineering #82 nationally, and it’s one of the larger majors on campus.
  • Nursing and health professions: Hope’s nursing program is accredited by the CCNE, with first-time NCLEX licensing exam pass rates of 90% or higher every year Hope reports (2019 to 2023).
  • Business, psychology and education: These are the largest majors by graduates, along with a strong teacher preparation program.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Big picture? Hope is a private college that’s quietly working to take the scary out of the sticker price. Tuition is locked the day your student starts. Every admitted fall 2027 student gets $12,000 off the top. Most will add another $8,000 to $22,000 in merit just for their grades. And a few dozen students a year get full tuition through Hope Forward, a program built on gratitude instead of debt.

The families who come out ahead at Hope do three things. They get the application in by Dec 1 if Hope Forward is even a maybe. They send any better grades or scores before Feb 1. And they put Hope first on the FAFSA if they live in Michigan. If your student loves research, the arts or a small campus where professors pull them into real work, Hope deserves a spot on the list and a run through its net price calculator.
