🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Hampton University (Read This First)

  • Test-optional closes the merit door. Students with a 3.6+ unweighted GPA can skip the SAT or ACT for admission, but anyone who applies that way cannot receive an Office of Admission merit scholarship. If money matters, send official scores.

The big exception is for Virginia families: domiciled Virginia residents can receive the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG), estimated at $12,750 for 2026-27 at Hampton. 🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Hampton does not publish a separate competitive scholarship program for incoming freshmen, and it doesn’t advertise an institutional full-tuition or full-ride award. The old named awards like Presidential and Trustee were folded into the Office of Admission merit range. The largest money a freshman can count on planning around is that merit award, plus VTAG for Virginia residents.

That’s not a bad thing. At a lot of schools, the big awards go to a small group of finalists after essays and interview weekends. Hampton went the other way on purpose, spreading its merit budget across more students. For families, that means the real “competition” is getting a complete application and strong test scores in early, not winning a finalist weekend.

Freddye T. Davy Honors College at Hampton University

Hampton’s Freddye T. Davy Honors College works differently than most honors programs families run into. Students usually don’t join it straight out of high school. Instead, they earn their way in once they’re on campus, and the payoff is less about a scholarship check and more about being coached for the biggest national awards out there.

  • How students get in: Earn a 3.5 cumulative Hampton GPA, then apply during the spring semester.
  • What it takes to stay: Keep a 3.5 GPA, serve on an Honors committee, and attend two retreats each year.
  • What it takes to graduate with Honors: 24 honors credit hours, a senior research capstone, a research conference presentation, 150 community service hours, at least one prestigious scholarship application, and a graduate or professional school qualifying exam.

Hampton is one of the country’s best-known HBCUs, and it has a real professional streak. A lot of students arrive already pointed at a specific career, whether that’s business, pharmacy, journalism, or nursing, and several of Hampton’s signature programs are built to get them there faster than a typical four-year path.

Signature Program:
5-Year BS/MBA (James T. George School of Business): Students earn a bachelor’s in business administration after three and a half years and an MBA at the end of year five. Along the way they complete two internships (one paid internship before starting graduate courses), earn Excel certification, and take part in a student-led leadership program. Freshmen can be admitted directly with a 1050+ SAT or 22+ ACT and strong high school records.
  • Pharmacy: Students can declare pre-pharmacy straight out of high school and move into Hampton’s four-year Doctor of Pharmacy program. There’s a traditional three-year prerequisite track and a faster two-year track that uses summers.
  • Journalism and Communications: The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications is one of Hampton’s most recognizable names for students heading into media, broadcasting, and public relations.
  • Nursing: The School of Nursing is a popular pathway, and nursing majors should expect a program fee on top of standard tuition.
  • Engineering and Architecture: The School of Engineering and Technology includes Hampton’s architecture program, which also carries its own program fee.

Planning note: Merit scholarships renew for four years total. If your student is heading into the 5-year MBA or the pharmacy pathway, map out how you’ll cover year five and beyond before committing.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Hampton keeps the price conversation refreshingly simple: one tuition rate for everyone, one merit pool worth $10,000 to $25,000 a year, and no finalist weekends to prepare for. What trips families up is how much of the money depends on doing things on time. A complete Common App with real test scores by November 15 decides the merit award, and skipping the SAT or ACT decides it too, just in the wrong direction.

For Virginia families, Hampton may be one of the best private college deals in the state, because the HBCU supplement pushes the state grant to an estimated $12,750. Families from other states should lean on merit, outside scholarships, and the General Scholarship Application to close the gap. Either way, three habits pay off: send scores early, answer the award letter the day it arrives, and keep filling out forms after the acceptance, from the Legacy Scholarship in June to VTAG in September.
