🏔️ Why Fort Lewis Is Different

Fort Lewis is a small public liberal arts college of about 3,400 students sitting on a mesa above Durango, in the Four Corners region. Admission is broadly accessible (about 77% of applicants get in), and the money side is unusually simple: merit is based on your student’s high school GPA alone, posted on a public grid, with no essays and no test scores. The bigger story is the set of tuition-free paths. Native American students and many lower-income Colorado families can attend without paying tuition at all.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Fort Lewis College (Read This First)

  • You get one tuition award, not a stack. GPA merit, WUE, the New Mexico Reciprocal, and the Native American Tuition Waiver cannot be combined. FLC gives your student whichever one helps most.
  • File the FAFSA by November 15. FLC awards its own aid first-come, most-in-need. Late filers can still get Pell and federal loans, but some FLC money runs out.
  • New Mexico families: apply by June 1. The New Mexico Reciprocal (in-state tuition) is only for students who apply to FLC by June 1.
  • The Foundation application is a separate step. Hundreds of donor and department scholarships live on AcademicWorks. The window opens December 1, and the priority deadline is February 15.
  • “Tuition-free” means tuition only. The Native American Tuition Waiver and the Tuition Promise do not cover about $2,716 in fees, housing, meals, or books. Budget for those.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Fort Lewis College: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Fort Lewis College has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $500 to $1,300 more than the in-state total below. $800 to $1,900 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$25,027
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $11,043
Housing & meals (typical) $13,984
Total billed cost $25,027
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$37,723
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $23,739
Housing & meals (typical) $13,984
Total billed cost $37,723

That is $12,696 more per year than Colorado residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $17,705 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

The Native American Tuition Waiver covers 100% of tuition (not fees) for enrolled citizens of federally recognized tribes and Alaska Native villages, and for their children. FLC participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE), valued at $8,532 for 2026-27 (reducing out-of-state tuition to $12,492), and offers a New Mexico Reciprocal Scholarship valued at $12,696 (lowering out-of-state tuition to the in-state rate). Merit tuition scholarships, WUE, the New Mexico Reciprocal, and the Native American Tuition Waiver cannot be combined.
Out-of-State Savings: Pick the Best One

Out-of-state tuition at FLC is $21,024 for 2026-27. Here is how families bring that down. Students from WUE states with a 3.25+ GPA pay $12,492 through the Western Undergraduate Exchange. New Mexico residents with a 3.0+ GPA pay the in-state rate through the New Mexico Reciprocal. Everyone else gets $4,000 to $8,000 off through GPA merit. These cannot be combined, so run the numbers for your student and FLC will apply the biggest one.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Fort Lewis College

What does a full year at FLC really cost, not just the bill?
FLC’s own budget for a first-year student living on campus is about $30,468 for Colorado residents and $43,766 for out-of-state students. That includes things you won’t see on the bill: about $1,300 for books, $2,240 to $2,842 for transportation, and $1,782 for personal costs. The table above shows only what FLC actually charges you.

What is the College Opportunity Fund, and do I have to do anything?
Yes. Colorado pays part of every resident’s tuition through a stipend called the College Opportunity Fund (COF). It’s worth $1,392 per semester for a full-time student. Your student has to apply for COF once and authorize FLC to use it. The in-state tuition shown here already assumes COF is in place, so skipping it means a bigger bill.

Does the Native American Tuition Waiver cover everything?
No. It covers tuition only. Students still pay mandatory fees (about $2,716 a year), housing, meals, and books. Tribal agency scholarships, Pell Grants, and FLC Foundation scholarships are the usual ways families cover the rest.

How does the FLC Tuition Promise work?
If your family is a Colorado resident with income of $70,000 or less on the FAFSA, FLC guarantees tuition is covered. All your other grants and scholarships go toward tuition first, and FLC pays whatever gap is left. If tuition goes up, the Promise goes up with it. Your student must enroll full-time (12+ credits) and finish the FAFSA by each term’s Census Date. Like the waiver, it covers tuition only.

We live in New Mexico. Do we pay out-of-state tuition?
Not if your student has a 3.0+ high school GPA and applies by June 1. The New Mexico Reciprocal Scholarship lowers tuition to the Colorado rate, worth $12,696 for 2026-27. Students transferring from San Juan College with an associate degree and a 2.75+ GPA get the in-state rate through a separate reciprocal scholarship.

Is the average net price of about $17,700 realistic?
It’s the federal average after grants and scholarships, so it blends Colorado residents, out-of-state students, and waiver recipients together. FLC’s Net Price Calculator gives a personal estimate. Keep in mind it leaves out Foundation scholarships, athletic awards, and the Tuition Promise, so many families will actually pay less than it shows.

📅 FLC Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • By November 15: File the FAFSA. FLC awards its own aid first-come, most-in-need.
  • At admission: GPA merit, WUE, and the New Mexico Reciprocal are awarded automatically. No extra application.
  • December 1 to February 15: Foundation and departmental scholarship application on AcademicWorks (priority deadline Feb 15).
  • By June 1: New Mexico students must have applied to FLC to get the New Mexico Reciprocal.

Parent rule of thumb: treat November 15 as your real deadline. The FAFSA gets your student in line early for the need-based money that runs out.

Automatic Merit Scholarships at Fort Lewis College

FLC merit is based on cumulative high school GPA only. ACT and SAT scores are not used at all, so there’s nothing to superscore and no reason to retest for money. Admitted first-year students are considered automatically, and awards renew for up to four years with a 2.0 FLC GPA.

Who Gets What (2026 Grid)

4.0+$8,000 (Presidential + Colorado Scholars)$8,000 (Presidential)
3.80 to 3.99$5,000 (Presidential)$8,000 (Presidential)

3.00 to 3.24$2,000 (Professor’s)$4,000 (Professor’s)

Note: Students from WUE states with a 3.25+ GPA can take WUE instead ($8,532 off, for $12,492 tuition), which beats every GPA award. The Colorado Scholars $3,000 add-on needs a 3.0 FLC GPA to renew; the base award needs a 2.0.

Automatic Merit FAQs (Fort Lewis College)

Do test scores matter for FLC merit?
No. Every automatic award is based on cumulative high school GPA. Your student can apply test-optional and still get the full award for their GPA.

Why do out-of-state students get more than Colorado students?
Out-of-state tuition is higher, so FLC offers bigger awards to stay competitive. A student with a 3.8 GPA gets $5,000 as a Colorado resident and $8,000 from out of state. Out-of-state students also hit the $6,000 Provost’s level at 3.25, where Coloradans need 3.5.

Can my student get merit and WUE together?
No. Merit, WUE, the New Mexico Reciprocal, and the Native American Tuition Waiver cannot be combined. For a WUE-state student with a 3.25 to 3.79 GPA, WUE ($8,532) is worth more than the Provost’s award ($6,000). At 3.8 and above, it’s closer to a toss-up, so compare the final numbers.

What is the Colorado Scholars award?
It’s a $3,000 add-on for Colorado residents with a 4.0+ GPA. Stacked on the $5,000 Presidential award, it brings the total to $8,000 a year. The add-on renews only if your student keeps a 3.0 at FLC.

My student has a GED. Do they qualify?
Yes. A GED score of 175+ in all four subjects earns the Provost’s award ($4,000 in-state, $8,000 out-of-state). A score of 165 to 174 earns the Dean’s award ($3,000 in-state, $6,000 out-of-state). A 165+ also qualifies GED students for WUE and the New Mexico Reciprocal.

Is there merit for transfer students?
Yes. Transfers with a 3.0+ college GPA and no prior bachelor’s degree get $1,500 to $2,000 a year in-state, or $2,500 to $3,000 out-of-state, depending on GPA. No separate application is needed.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Fort Lewis does not run a big-name competitive scholarship with interviews or finalist weekends. FLC puts its money into three places instead: automatic GPA merit, tuition-free paths (the Native American Tuition Waiver and the Tuition Promise), and hundreds of smaller Foundation and departmental awards. Those smaller awards are covered in Hidden Gems below.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at FLC?

Aid Type Stacks? FLC Parent Translation
GPA Merit, WUE, NM Reciprocal, Native American Tuition Waiver No (pick one) Your student gets the single biggest tuition award they qualify for. These never combine.
FLC Tuition Promise Fills the gap All other grants and scholarships go to tuition first. The Promise pays whatever tuition is left.
Foundation & Departmental Awards Yes These sit on top of merit. For Tuition Promise families, they count toward tuition first, so they help most once tuition is already covered.
COSI Achieve, Pell, State Grants Yes Need-based money that layers on top. File the FAFSA early, because COSI is first-come.
Athletic & Cycling Scholarships Usually Talk to the head coach directly. These also count as gift aid under the Tuition Promise.

If your student is chasing a full-ride, essay-and-interview scholarship, FLC isn’t that kind of school. Where it shines is predictability. You can look up your student’s GPA on the grid and know the merit number before you apply. Plenty of families also land at a tuition-free price through the waiver or the Promise.

This institution does not offer designated Competitive scholarships at this time.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs

Does Fort Lewis have a full-ride scholarship?
Not a merit-based one. The largest automatic award is $8,000 a year. The closest thing to “full” is the tuition-free path: the Native American Tuition Waiver, or the Tuition Promise for Colorado families earning $70,000 or less. Both cover tuition only, not housing or fees.

Is there any scholarship my student has to compete for?
Yes, through the FLC Foundation. One general application on AcademicWorks (open December 1, priority deadline February 15) puts your student in front of hundreds of donor and department funds. Some ask for an essay or a letter of recommendation.

If my student wins a Foundation scholarship, will FLC cut their merit award?
No. Merit stays the same. The only interaction is with the Tuition Promise: Foundation money is applied to tuition first, so it reduces how much the Promise has to cover.

Does FLC offer National Merit or QuestBridge scholarships?
No. FLC does not take part in National Merit sponsorship or QuestBridge.

How should my student prepare for the Foundation application?
Have a short activity list and a couple of reusable essay paragraphs ready by December. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help organize that.

🧠 Parent Strategy: One Application, Hundreds of Funds

Getting admitted and getting merit happens automatically at FLC. The Foundation money does not. Your student has to log into AcademicWorks and fill out the general scholarship application, and the profile answers match them to funds.

  1. Mark December 1 on the calendar. That’s when the application opens.
  2. Answer every profile question honestly: hometown county, first-gen status, major, tribal enrollment, music ensemble, and so on. Each answer unlocks funds.
  3. Upload any supplemental essays or recommendation letters before February 15.
  4. If your student won a scholarship from a Southwest Colorado civic group, upload proof for the Civic Match.

Parent translation: skip this step and your student still gets merit, but walks past the $500 to $2,000 awards that cover books, fees, and housing.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These are the awards most families miss. Some are tuition-free paths, some are need-based, and some are small donor funds that add up. Most stack with merit, though the Native American Tuition Waiver replaces it.

Money the college does not control. Federal programs, city promise funds, foundations, and employers. The college may help you apply, but someone else writes the check, and these almost always stack with the college's own awards.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Who qualifies for the Native American Tuition Waiver?
Enrolled citizens of a federally recognized American Indian Tribal Nation or Alaska Native Village qualify, and so do children of an enrolled citizen. Students upload enrollment documentation to the Admission Portal. Descendants use the Affirmation of Descendancy form with a parent’s documentation. It covers tuition in full, from any state, but not fees or housing.

Is the FLC Tuition Promise really free tuition?
For Colorado residents with family income of $70,000 or less on the FAFSA, yes. FLC covers whatever tuition is left after other gift aid. Your student must be full-time, seeking a first bachelor’s degree, and have a complete aid file by the Census Date.

What is COSI Achieve?
A state-funded award of $2,000 a year for up to four years. It goes to first-year Colorado students who are Pell-eligible or have an SAI of 14,790 or lower, with priority to first-generation students. There’s no application, but it’s first-come, first-served, so an early FAFSA matters.

What is the Reisher Scholars Program?
A need-based award for Colorado residents, plus out-of-state students on the waiver or the New Mexico Reciprocal. It’s for rising sophomores and incoming junior transfers with a 3.0+ GPA. It fills unmet need, and it’s unlocked by first completing the Foundation application.

Are there awards for Native American students beyond the waiver?
Yes. The American Indian Supplemental Existence Fund pays up to $1,000 a year to waiver recipients in qualifying majors with a 2.80+ GPA. Tribal agency scholarships also help, and FLC’s Financial Aid Office completes the Financial Need Analysis form many tribes require. The Native American Center lists more.

We’re FLC alumni. Does that help?
Children and grandchildren of FLC alumni can apply for Alumni Scholarships of $500 to $1,000. They need a 2.70+ GPA and full-time enrollment, and must reapply each year by February 15.

John F. Reed Honors Program at Fort Lewis College

FLC doesn’t have a separate Honors College. It has the John F. Reed Honors Program, a small, interdisciplinary community open to students in any major. Students apply separately, and admission is selective but holistic. The honors council looks at motivation and fit, not just numbers.

  • Who should apply: Students with a 3.5+ unweighted high school GPA (or a 3.0+ college GPA)
  • Deadlines: Priority March 1, regular August 1
  • What you earn: An Honors minor or Honors concentration on the transcript, finishing with a capstone project
  • Perks: Small honors-only classes, individual advising, an honors lounge and computer lab, and undergraduate research support

Honors Scholarships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

Money Note: The Reed Honors Program does not come with its own scholarship. Your student’s merit award is set by GPA either way. Honors is about the classes, the mentoring, and a transcript credential that stands out for grad school and jobs.

Honors Program FAQs (Fort Lewis College)

Is Honors admission automatic for high-GPA students?
No. Students fill out a separate application with a short statement of interest. A 3.5 unweighted GPA is the floor, and the council also weighs curiosity and motivation.

Can my student join after starting at FLC?
Yes. Current FLC students with a 3.0+ college GPA can apply during the year, which is a good option for late bloomers.

Does Honors pay for anything?
Not directly. There’s no honors scholarship. The value is small classes, advising, and research support.

Does Honors add extra classes?
It replaces some general education courses with honors seminars and adds a capstone. Students finish with either an Honors minor or an Honors concentration.

⭐ College Specialty

Fort Lewis is a public liberal arts college, so classes are small and professors know students by name. What really sets it apart is location. Durango sits between the San Juan Mountains and the desert of the Four Corners, and a lot of FLC’s best programs use that backyard as the classroom.

Signature Program:
Adventure Education. Few colleges offer a full major built around outdoor leadership, and FLC adds certificates in Snow & Avalanche Studies and Wilderness & Adventure Therapy. Students learn climbing, paddling, mountaineering, and avalanche safety for credit. It’s a direct pipeline into guiding, outdoor education, and wilderness therapy careers.
  • Katz School of Business: AACSB-accredited, a standard only a small share of business schools worldwide meet. It offers accounting, business administration, marketing, entrepreneurship, and a Ski Resort Operations certificate that fits the mountain economy.
  • Engineering: The B.S. in Engineering is ABET-accredited, and students get hands-on design work in small lab sections.
  • Native American and Indigenous Studies: A natural strength at a college where more than 248 tribes and Alaska Native villages have been represented.
  • Environment & Earth Sciences: Environmental Conservation & Management and Geology take full advantage of the Four Corners for field work, with certificates in GIS, water studies, and river leadership.
  • Health & Behavior: Exercise Physiology and Psychology are popular paths toward health careers and graduate school.
  • Also accredited: Music (NASM) and Chemistry (ACS-approved).

✅ Wrapping It Up

Fort Lewis is one of the most honest deals in Western higher ed. There are no essay contests for merit and no test-score games. Look up your student’s GPA on the grid and you know the number. Then check whether one of the bigger doors applies: WUE if you live in the West, the New Mexico Reciprocal if you’re next door, the Tuition Promise if you’re a Colorado family earning $70,000 or less, or the Native American Tuition Waiver, a promise more than a century old that still lets Native students attend tuition-free.

The work is in the timing. File the FAFSA by November 15, fill out the Foundation application between December 1 and February 15, and budget for the fees, housing, and books that “tuition-free” doesn’t cover. Do those three things and a small college in the mountains can cost a lot less than most families expect.
