Eastern is Connecticut’s designated public liberal arts university, and that label does real work here. It is small on purpose, around 4,000 undergraduates, with most students living on campus in Willimantic. Admission is not the hard part: roughly 83 percent of applicants get in, and there is no strict GPA cutoff. The money is where the actual strategy lives.

🧭 The Rest of New England: NERSP Without the Major Restriction
Eastern participates in the New England Board of Higher Education Tuition Break through the New England Regional Student Program. At most schools in this program there is a catch: you only qualify if your major is on an approved list, and switching majors can cost you the rate mid-degree.
Eastern runs a flexibility version. Students from Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont are eligible regardless of chosen major. That removes the single biggest trap in regional reciprocity programs.

Why is Eastern’s out-of-state price so much closer to in-state than at other public universities?

The Connecticut Automatic Admission Program is the most underused thing on this page. If your student graduates from a Connecticut high school with either a 3.0 weighted or 2.75 unweighted GPA, CAAP guarantees admission and a merit scholarship. No essay. No application fee.
- Create a Common Application account and enter an accurate GPA and permanent address.
- Opt in to let Common App contact you. Within about a week you get an automatic admission offer.
- Select Eastern from the list and complete the shortened application.
- Ask your counselor to send the official transcript. The scholarship is not awarded until it arrives.
Two catches worth knowing. CAAP guarantees admission to the university, not to a specific program: Nursing and the Honors Program both require additional applications. And that transcript step is where families stall out. The offer sits unfinished, and so does the money.
Note: Eastern does not publish a public tier chart tying specific GPA and test bands to specific dollar amounts the way some large public universities do. Award sizes are set during admission review based on the strength of the academic record. Do I have to apply separately for merit scholarships?

This is the most important section on the page. The University Honors Program was founded in 1973 and is one of the more established honors programs in New England. Admission is separate from admission to the university, it is competitive, and the deadline is January 15 of senior year, which is well before most families are thinking about financial aid at all.
What makes it matter financially: for a student living on campus, the Honors scholarship is a waiver of full tuition and fees, renewable for four years. For an out-of-state student that is $17,508 a year. It is by a wide margin the largest award Eastern gives.
- Typical admit profile: top 10 percent of the high school class, roughly a 3.8 cumulative GPA, a 1200 or better SAT, and a record that includes Honors or AP coursework

For a Connecticut family within driving distance, that is worth sitting down with. Living on campus costs about $16,392 but the waiver grows by about $7,010. Commuting is still cheaper on paper. Is Honors admission automatic if my stats are strong?
No. There is a separate application with an essay and two teacher recommendations, and it is competitive. Strong stats get you considered, not admitted.
What if we miss January 15?
You miss the largest award Eastern offers for that cycle. This is the single most expensive deadline on the page, and it lands in the middle of senior-year application season when families are least likely to be watching for it. Put it on the calendar in September.

Eastern is Connecticut’s designated public liberal arts university, and it is a member of COPLAC, the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. That is a small national group, and Eastern is the only one in Connecticut. The nearest COPLAC comparisons are SUNY Geneseo in New York and Ramapo College in New Jersey, which tells you what kind of school this is: small classes, close faculty contact, undergraduate research as a normal expectation rather than a special program.
