How Cal Poly Admission Really Works

Cal Poly admits students by major, not by school. Your student only competes against other people applying to the same program, and every major is crowded. Engineering is the toughest door: more than 21,000 applicants went after roughly 1,400 first-year seats in fall 2025. There are no essays, no interviews, and no test scores. Cal Poly looks at the 9th through 11th grade weighted GPA, the college-prep classes your student took, and what they did outside the classroom, including jobs and leadership.

  • Test scores don’t count for anything. Like every Cal State campus, Cal Poly is test-free. Sending an SAT or ACT will not help admission or scholarships.
  • “Automatically considered” is not “automatically awarded.” There is no merit chart and no guaranteed dollar amount. Scholarship offers trickle in from April through August.

Two Things That Change Your Tuition Number

First, the college your student is admitted to. For students starting in 2026-27, Engineering, Architecture, and Agriculture charge $15,720 a year in tuition and fees, while Science and Math, Business, and Liberal Arts charge $14,682. The table above uses the higher number so you are not caught short. Second, the year your student starts. Cal Poly sets tuition by entering class, so each new freshman class pays its own rate and keeps it. That is why you will see older classes paying less on Cal Poly’s cost sheet.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Cal Poly

Why is out-of-state so much more expensive?
Non-residents pay two charges on top of the in-state price. One is nonresident tuition of $471 per unit, which works out to about $14,130 for a normal year. The other is a Cal Poly Non-Resident Opportunity Fee of $8,804. Together that takes tuition and fees from $15,720 to about $38,654 for an engineering, architecture, or agriculture student.

Is there a WUE discount or out-of-state waiver?
No. Cal Poly does not take part in WUE or any other regional tuition exchange, and there is no broad waiver. Most out-of-state students pay non-resident rates for all four years, so plan your budget that way.

What does housing really cost?
A first-year residence hall runs $12,682 plus $7,656 for meals, or $20,338 for the year. Nearly every freshman lives on campus. After that, San Luis Obispo rents are steep. Cal Poly estimates about $2,160 a month for a one-bedroom apartment, which is why most upperclassmen split multi-bedroom places.

Is the average net price really about $17,450?
Yes. That is the federal average for students who received grant or scholarship aid. Freshmen with financial need received an average need-based grant of about $21,900 in the latest Common Data Set. Families with no need and no outside scholarships usually pay close to the full sticker price.

Can a middle-income California family get help?
Often, yes. The state’s Middle Class Scholarship is open to California families with income and assets up to $234,000 on Cal Poly’s current page. You only need to file the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application by March 2 to be considered.

Did the switch to semesters change the cost?
The yearly total is about the same. Cal Poly moved from quarters to semesters in fall 2026, so bills and aid now come in two terms instead of three. Non-resident tuition is still charged per unit, based on about 15 units a semester.

We make too much for a Cal Grant. Is there anything for us?
Check the Middle Class Scholarship. California families with income and assets up to $234,000 on Cal Poly’s current page can qualify, and filing the FAFSA or Dream Act Application by March 2 is all it takes to be considered.

What is the Castagna Architectural Scholarship?
It awards $15,000 to multiple architecture and architectural engineering students who have finished their first year. Students need a personal statement and a faculty recommendation, and low-income students get preference.

What is EOP, and how does my student get in?
The Educational Opportunity Program supports low-income, first-generation students with counseling, a summer program, and a grant of up to $1,000 a year. Your student applies in the EOP section of Cal State Apply by November 30.

Do outside scholarships hurt our Cal Poly aid?
They can change the package, so report them to the Financial Aid Office. Total aid cannot exceed the cost of attendance.

Can freshmen apply for department scholarships?

The University Honors Program at Cal Poly

Cal Poly has a University Honors Program, not a separate Honors College. Freshmen cannot apply on their own. After admission, Cal Poly invites newly admitted students to apply. The program is about smaller classes, community, and service, and it does not come with scholarship money.

  • How competitive: Over 2,000 applications for about 100 to 125 freshman spots.
  • When you hear back: By the last week of April, before the May 1 decision deadline.
  • Second chance: Students who don’t get in can apply after one semester at Cal Poly with at least a 3.4 GPA.

Honors Scholarships

This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.

Cal Poly does not attach dedicated scholarships to Honors admission. Honors students are considered for the same university and department awards as everyone else.

GPA Note: Honors students need a 3.3 Cal Poly GPA by the end of their first year, a 3.4 after the second, and a 3.5 after that. Cal Poly grading is tough, so take this seriously.

No. The invitation comes from Cal Poly Admissions after your student is admitted.

Does applying to Honors commit my student to Cal Poly?
No. Decisions come out before May 1 so families can compare offers.

Is there an Honors program inside each major?
No. It is one university-wide program focused mostly on general education. Students from all six colleges take part.

Will lots of AP credit get in the way?
Possibly. AP credit cannot count toward Honors course requirements, so students with heavy AP loads may need a few extra courses.

Is Honors worth it without scholarship money?
For the right student, yes. The small classes and built-in community can make a large campus feel smaller. Your student should apply for the experience, not for money.

⭐ College Specialty

Cal Poly’s whole identity is “Learn by Doing.” Students get into labs, studios, farms, and real client projects from their first year instead of waiting until senior year. That hands-on approach is why employers recruit here heavily, and it is also why admission is so competitive in the applied majors.

Signature Program:
Engineering: Engineering is Cal Poly’s largest area. It accounts for about 23 percent of all bachelor’s degrees, and it is the hardest major group to get into. Majors run from aerospace and mechanical to computer, software, and biomedical engineering, all built around project work.
  • Architecture and Environmental Design: Architecture, architectural engineering, landscape architecture, city and regional planning, and construction management. It is one of the strongest design and construction colleges in the West, with its own scholarship pool.
  • Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences: About 1 in 10 Cal Poly graduates comes from this college. Programs include agricultural business, animal science, and wine and viticulture, with a working farm, vineyard, and creamery on campus.
  • Business: The Orfalea College of Business produces about 17 percent of graduates, with strong pipelines into accounting, finance, and industry.
  • Computer Science: One of the most applied-to majors on campus, and a big draw for tech employers.
  • Cal Poly Maritime Academy: Cal Maritime is now part of Cal Poly at its Solano campus in Vallejo. It is the West Coast’s only degree-granting maritime academy, offering marine transportation, marine engineering technology, and international strategy and security.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Cal Poly is a great deal for the right California family and a hard one for most out-of-state families. It does not win students with big merit checks. In-state, it wins on hands-on programs, strong job outcomes, and a price that state grants can shrink a lot, especially through the Cal Grant, the Middle Class Scholarship, and Cal Poly Scholars.

Out of state, the math changes fast. The two non-resident charges push tuition and fees close to $39,000 a year, with no WUE discount to soften it. Compare that against other offers before May 1.

If your student lands a spot, the playbook is simple: pick the major carefully, file the FAFSA or Dream Act Application by March 2 every year, and never skip the spring scholarship application. That is how Cal Poly families turn a good price into a great one.
