Here’s the number that stopped me. In fall 2025, Cal Poly Pomona enrolled 4,004 first-year students. Only 44 of them got a merit scholarship that had nothing to do with financial need, and the average award was about $1,012. In that same class, 2,300 freshmen received need-based grant money averaging $13,064.
So a 4.0 helps your student get in, but it won’t trigger a discount here. CPP is a value school because the price starts low and California’s need-based aid does most of the heavy lifting. For the typical family, the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application matters more to the final bill than the transcript does.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Cal Poly Pomona (Read This First)
Test-blind, not test-optional. Like every CSU campus, CPP does not look at SAT or ACT scores for admission or for scholarships. Don’t pay to send them.
March 2 is the date that matters. The Bronco Scholarship Portal closes March 2, and that’s also the Cal Grant and Middle Class Scholarship deadline (FAFSA or CADAA plus a verified GPA). Miss it and you wait a full year for the next scholarship cycle.
You don’t have to wait for the admission letter. The portal opens October 1, and new students can apply as soon as they have a Cal State Apply application to CPP and a student ID. Applications only count if the student is admitted.
The CSU application window moved up. For fall 2027, the priority filing period is August 1 to November 30, earlier than many families remember.
Getting into CPP isn’t getting into your major. Nineteen programs are impacted, including all five big engineering majors, architecture, computer science, accounting, biology, and psychology.
WUE is not automatic. Out-of-state students from Western states are considered without a separate form, but only about the top 10 to 15 percent of those admits get it. No email by April 6 means no WUE.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Cal Poly Pomona: 2026–2027 Rates
Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.
📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Cal Poly Pomona has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly
$500 to $1,300 more than the in-state total below.$800 to $2,000 more than the out-of-state total below.
In-State: billed cost per year
$25,476
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$8,566
Housing & meals (typical)
$16,910
Total billed cost
$25,476
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$39,606
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$22,696
Housing & meals (typical)
$16,910
Total billed cost
$39,606
That is $14,130 more per year than California residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.
Average federal net price: $11,940 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.
📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options
Cal Poly Pomona participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE). Selected students from WICHE states pay 150% of the California resident tuition rate instead of full nonresident tuition. There is no separate WUE application: every admitted applicant from an eligible state is considered automatically, but CPP awards WUE only to roughly the top 10 to 15 percent of WUE-state admits. Recipients are notified in early April, and if you have not heard by April 6, your student did not receive it and cannot petition. For 2026-2027, CPP's published on-campus budget is $34,751 with WUE versus $45,462 for a standard nonresident, a difference of about $10,700 a year. Freshmen keep WUE for four years with satisfactory academic progress.
The Full Budget (What Financial Aid Actually Uses)
The table above shows what CPP bills you. Financial aid is built on the full cost of attendance, which adds books, transportation, and personal expenses. Here’s CPP’s official 2026-2027 budget by living situation:
Student Type
Living at Home
On Campus
Off Campus
California resident
$25,824
$31,332
$37,002
WUE recipient
$29,243
$34,751
$40,421
Nonresident (no WUE)
$39,954
$45,462
$51,132
Parent translation: off-campus living is the most expensive option on paper. CPP budgets about $1,396 a month for rent with a roommate, and that’s before food.
💡 California families: the big money is state aid.
Cal Grant A can cover CSU systemwide tuition for eligible residents, and the Middle Class Scholarship helps families who earn too much for a Cal Grant. Both run on the same March 2 deadline. See our California State Grants & Scholarships guide.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Cal Poly Pomona
How much does Cal Poly Pomona cost per year for a California resident?
For 2026-2027, tuition and mandatory fees are $8,566 ($6,838 systemwide tuition plus $1,728 in campus fees). Add a double room and the unlimited meal plan at $16,910 and the bill is about $25,476. CPP’s full budget for an on-campus resident, including books, transportation, and personal costs, is $31,332.
How much is out-of-state tuition at Cal Poly Pomona?
Nonresidents pay everything a California student pays, plus $471 per unit. At a normal 15-unit load each semester, that’s $14,130 extra a year, which brings tuition and fees to $22,696 and the on-campus budget to $45,462.
Does Cal Poly Pomona participate in WUE?
Yes. WUE students pay 150% of resident tuition ($10,257 instead of $20,968 in combined tuition), which cuts about $10,700 off the year. There’s no separate application, but CPP only gives WUE to about the top 10 to 15 percent of admitted students from WUE states. Recipients hear in early April, and if you haven’t heard by April 6, you didn’t get it. Freshmen keep it for four years with satisfactory progress. More on how WUE works in our WUE guide.
What do families actually pay at Cal Poly Pomona after aid?
The federal average net price is about $11,940 a year for in-state freshmen who receive aid. By family income, it breaks down to roughly $7,851 under $30,000, $8,433 at $30,001 to $48,000, $10,734 at $48,001 to $75,000, $13,894 at $75,001 to $110,000, and $20,716 above $110,000 (2023-2024 federal data). Run CPP’s net price calculator for your own number.
Is commuting to Cal Poly Pomona really cheaper?
Yes, by about $5,500 a year for a California resident ($25,824 living at home versus $31,332 on campus). The savings are smaller than most people expect because CPP’s commuter budget still counts $10,670 for food and higher transportation costs. If your student can live at home, it’s still the biggest lever you control.
Will tuition go up while my student is at Cal Poly Pomona?
Plan on it. The CSU Board of Trustees approved 6% annual tuition increases running through 2028-2029. You can see it in CPP’s numbers: systemwide tuition went from $6,450 in 2025-2026 to $6,838 in 2026-2027.
Can a Cal Grant cover tuition at Cal Poly Pomona?
For eligible California residents, Cal Grant A can cover CSU systemwide tuition. Your student needs the FAFSA or CADAA filed and a verified Cal Grant GPA submitted by March 2, 2027 for the 2027-2028 year. Campus fees, housing, and food are separate.
📅 Cal Poly Pomona Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)
October 1: The FAFSA, the CADAA, and the Bronco Scholarship Portal all open on the same day.
March 2: The portal closes for next year’s CPP scholarships, and it’s the Cal Grant and Middle Class Scholarship deadline too.
Early April: WUE decisions go out to out-of-state admits (no word by April 6 means no WUE).
May through summer: Scholarship winners are notified by CPP email, and money hits the account starting 10 days before classes.
Parent rule of thumb: put March 2 on the fridge. At CPP, it’s the scholarship deadline and the state grant deadline at the same time.
Automatic Merit Scholarships at Cal Poly Pomona
Cal Poly Pomona does not offer automatic merit scholarships. There’s no GPA chart that says “3.8 gets you $5,000.” Instead, CPP runs more than 400 donor-funded scholarships through one place, the Bronco Scholarship Portal. Your student fills out one general application with a personal statement (750 words or less), and the portal matches them to every scholarship they appear to qualify for. Committees from each college and department pick the winners.

🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Families between roughly $100,000 and $262,000 at a UC or CSU, the group that gets nothing from Cal Grant. The award changes every year with the state budget, so a sophomore's letter can be smaller than freshman year's for reasons that have nothing to do with the student.
This institution does not offer designated Automatic Merit scholarships at this time.
Note: “Auto-match” in the portal means your student gets considered without hunting for each award. It doesn’t mean they get paid. Some matched scholarships also ask for a short extra statement, so check the recommended list after submitting.
Automatic Merit FAQs (Cal Poly Pomona)
Does Cal Poly Pomona give automatic merit scholarships?
No. In fall 2025, only 44 of 4,004 new freshmen received merit aid that wasn’t based on need, averaging about $1,012. Almost all scholarship money at CPP comes through the Bronco Scholarship Portal and is chosen by committees.
Can my student apply for Cal Poly Pomona scholarships before being admitted?
Yes, and they should. The portal opens October 1. New students can apply once they’ve submitted a Cal State Apply application to CPP and have a student ID. The application only counts if they’re admitted, but waiting for the admission letter eats into the window.
What’s the deadline for Cal Poly Pomona scholarships?
March 2 for the following school year. Some individual scholarships close earlier, and new ones get posted during the cycle, so it’s worth checking the portal every week or two.
Are SAT or ACT scores used for CPP scholarships?
No. CPP is test-blind for admission, and the portal looks at things like GPA, major, involvement, goals, and financial need instead.
Is there any money an out-of-state student gets without applying?
WUE is the closest thing. Students from WUE states are considered automatically when they apply, but only about the top 10 to 15 percent of those admits receive it.
Should we file the FAFSA even if we don’t think we qualify for aid?
Yes. Some portal scholarships use financial need from the FAFSA or CADAA, and California’s Middle Class Scholarship reaches families with higher incomes than most people assume.
Cal Poly Pomona doesn’t have a presidential scholarship or a big-ticket award for incoming freshmen. The two largest competitive awards on this page are a department scholarship worth $7,780 a year and a CSU-wide award that only continuing students can enter. If you’re hoping for a full-tuition offer, that isn’t how CPP works. The value here is the low starting price plus state and federal grants.

What should my student prepare?
A strong personal statement covering academic goals, career plans, and why the money matters. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help organize that story before October 1.
Is Cal Poly Pomona a National Merit or QuestBridge school?
No. CPP doesn’t sponsor National Merit scholarships and isn’t a QuestBridge partner.
🧠 Parent Strategy: One Application, Then Go Department Hunting
At CPP, the money lives inside the colleges: engineering, agriculture, hospitality, science, communication. The general application gets your student matched, but the extra statements are where most students drop off. Here’s the routine:
Open the “recommended” list and finish every short statement your student qualifies for.
Check the portal every couple of weeks. CPP says not every scholarship posts at the same time.
Hospitality majors: also join the Collins College scholarship course in Canvas. Those postings don’t all show up in the portal.
Parent translation: the students who win at CPP aren’t always the ones with the best GPA. They’re the ones who answered every extra question.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
What engineering scholarships does Cal Poly Pomona offer?
The College of Engineering lists named scholarships from $500 to $10,000. Some are open to any engineering major, some belong to one department, and six are reserved for students in the Maximizing Engineering Potential (MEP) program. All of them run through the Bronco Scholarship Portal.
How do hospitality students find Collins College scholarships?
The Collins College says it awards more than $300,000 a year, and 70% of its students get financial help. The catch is that Collins posts opportunities in a Canvas course called CCHM Scholarship Opportunities, so students who only check the portal can miss them.
Are there scholarships for agriculture and equine students at CPP?
Yes. The Huntley College of Agriculture has more than 40 named funds, and the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center adds a handful more, including the Norm K. Dunn Scholarship for incoming freshmen and transfers. The center’s scholarship page hasn’t been updated in years, so confirm each fund in the portal.
What scholarships are there for Communication majors?
The Department of Communication lists eight awards from $500 to $7,780. Most go to current majors, and several aren’t open to graduating seniors, so sophomore and junior years are the sweet spot.
Is there scholarship money for computer science at Cal Poly Pomona?
Yes. The College of Science lists named funds for Computer Science, including Boeing and Alvarez/Microsoft scholarships, plus more in biology, chemistry, math, physics, geology, and kinesiology.
Can incoming freshmen win these, or are they only for current students?
Both, depending on the fund. Incoming students can apply through the portal from October 1, but many department awards favor students who already have CPP grades and involvement. Apply every year.
The Kellogg Honors College (KHC) is CPP’s honors community. It’s free to join, the classes are small, and honors students in good standing get priority registration when they’re taking honors courses, which at a campus with impacted majors can matter as much as money. You apply after your student is admitted to CPP, and getting into KHC has no effect on getting into CPP.
Who can apply: Admitted incoming freshmen (no minimum GPA to apply), first-year CPP students heading into sophomore year, and incoming transfers
To stay in: Keep a 3.30 GPA, take honors courses, do yearly community service, and finish a research capstone
Application rounds (most recent cycle): Round 1 ran January 2 to March 2, and Round 2 ran March 21 to May 4

Most of these fellowships (Rhodes, Marshall, Gates Cambridge, Mitchell, Fulbright, Soros, Madison) fund graduate study after CPP, so they do not interact with undergraduate aid. Goldwater, Hollings, EPP/MSI, and Udall pay during undergrad and can layer on top of institutional and state aid, subject to the cost-of-attendance cap.
📄
How to Apply
Join the Kellogg Honors College, then meet with KHC's fellowship advisors early. Each national award has its own application, deadline, and nomination process, and KHC handles the campus nomination step for the awards that require one.
Selection criteria: Each fellowship has its own external selection committee; KHC's role is advising, nomination, and endorsement rather than direct selection.

Strategic Detail
This is not a single scholarship. It is the Kellogg Honors College's advising hub for nationally competitive awards, including Goldwater, Truman, Udall (up to $7,000), Hollings (up to $9,500 a year), EPP/MSI, Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Gates Cambridge, Soros, and Madison. Several of these, including Goldwater, Truman, Udall, and Madison, require a campus nomination, so students cannot apply on their own. KHC also points students to the CSU Pre-Doctoral Program ($3,000 toward graduate research). KHC's own scholarships for honors students run through the regular Bronco Scholarship Portal.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
KHC members who start early. Gates Cambridge, Rhodes, Marshall, and Soros recipients typically built research, public service, or international experience by sophomore year. Goldwater finalists are STEM students with serious research portfolios by junior year. Truman applicants are public service-oriented juniors with clear graduate-school-to-career narratives. The common thread: students who treat fellowship advising as a multi-year relationship, not a senior-year scramble.
Data last verified Oct 5, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.
KHC doesn’t have its own scholarship application. Honors scholarships run through the same Bronco Scholarship Portal as everything else, with eligibility limited to honors students.
Timing Note: KHC’s Round 1 closed on March 2 last cycle, the same day as the scholarship portal and the Cal Grant deadline. Apply in Round 1 if you can. Round 2 decisions came out around June 1, after most families have already committed.
What Honors Actually Gets You at CPP
Small classes: Honors sections cap at 15 to 20 students, and most count toward general education.
Priority registration: A real advantage when popular classes fill fast.
Research money: KHC gives enrichment grants to students presenting research or studying abroad.
Fellowship coaching: Help with Goldwater, Truman, Udall, Fulbright, and similar awards, including the campus nomination some of them require.
Kellogg Honors College FAQs (Cal Poly Pomona)
How do you get into the Kellogg Honors College?
Get admitted to CPP first, then submit KHC’s application with a cover letter, essay, and resume. There’s no minimum GPA to apply as an incoming freshman.
Does the Kellogg Honors College come with a scholarship?
Not automatically. Honors students get access to honors-only scholarships in the Bronco Scholarship Portal, but they still have to apply and win them.
What GPA do you need to stay in KHC?
A 3.30. KHC checks it each semester.
How many honors classes does my student have to take?
It depends on when they join. KHC’s main page says entering freshmen take seven honors courses, while its FAQ mentions five courses including the capstone. Confirm the current requirement with KHC when your student is admitted.
Does it cost anything?
No. Applying and being a member are both free.
Can transfer students join?
Yes, but only before their first semester at CPP. Students coming from a community college honors program in the Honors Transfer Council of California may qualify for direct admission.
Cal Poly Pomona is one of the CSU’s polytechnic universities, and “learn by doing” isn’t a slogan here, it’s how classes are built. Students spend a lot of time in labs, studios, barns, and kitchens instead of lecture halls. It doesn’t have the name recognition of a UC, but employers in Southern California know it well, and for the price, few schools can match what it delivers in engineering and applied fields.
Nationally Known Program: College of Engineering: U.S. News ranks CPP’s undergraduate engineering #12 among schools that don’t offer a doctorate, with computer engineering at #2 (tie), aerospace at #4, civil at #5, electrical at #6 (tie), and mechanical at #8. All five of those majors are impacted, so admission is tougher than CPP’s overall 74% acceptance rate suggests.
Hospitality Management: The Collins College is one of the best-known hospitality programs anywhere and runs its own scholarship pipeline worth more than $300,000 a year.
Agriculture & Animal Science: The Huntley College of Agriculture and the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center give students hands-on work with livestock and horses that’s rare inside a major metro area.
Architecture & Environmental Design: A studio-heavy program and one of the impacted majors. CPP ranks #1 nationally for architecture bachelor’s degrees earned by Latino students.
Business: A large, practical business college where accounting and the finance, real estate, and law program are both impacted.
Computer Science: Also impacted, and backed by industry-funded department scholarships.
Economic Mobility: CPP has been named the top polytechnic university for diversity and economic mobility, and U.S. News ranks it #2 for in-state value among Western regional universities.
🔗 Official Cal Poly Pomona Links
Use Cal Poly Pomona’s official pages below to double-check deadlines, costs, and scholarship rules. When something on this page and CPP’s site disagree, trust CPP.
Cal Poly Pomona is the rare school where the sticker price is the deal. A California student can live on campus for about $25,500 in billed costs, and families who qualify for Cal Grant and Pell often pay far less than that. What CPP won’t do is hand out merit money for grades. Fewer than 1 in 90 freshmen get a merit award, and those average about a thousand dollars.
So the playbook is simple and a little unusual. File the FAFSA or CADAA and the Bronco Scholarship Portal application in October, treat March 2 as the deadline for everything, and have your student chase the department scholarships tied to their major. For out-of-state families, WUE is the one discount that changes the math, and only the strongest admits get it. If your student wants engineering, hospitality, agriculture, or architecture with real hands-on work, CPP delivers a lot of school for the money.
Your kid did everything right. That does not mean the money follows.
Most families build a college list first and think about scholarships second, which is backwards. This free four-part series shows you where the money actually comes from, and how to build a list around it.
