📌 Berry College at a Glance
- Berry publishes three different aid deadlines on three different pages. The scholarship page says December 1 priority. The first-year admission page says November 1 Early Action gets you the full range of scholarships, then calls January 15 the financial aid deadline. The financial aid FAQ says the FAFSA priority date is February 15. They are not contradicting each other so much as talking about different things, and we untangle it in the timeline below. The safe play: file everything by November 1 and you are covered on all three.
- There is no automatic merit chart. Berry does not publish a “3.7 GPA and a 29 ACT gets you X dollars” grid, because one does not exist. Every admitted student is automatically considered, and the published range is $12,500 to $25,000 a year. Where your student lands depends on grades and course rigor, not a lookup table.
- Getting admitted does not enter you for the big money. The Signature Scholars programs and the leadership and talent awards live behind a separate application inside the MyBerry Portal, under a tab labeled Scholarships. Skip that tab and you have skipped the awards that actually change the price.
- Berry plays 23 sports and none of them come with athletic money. Berry is Division III, a founding member of the Southern Athletic Association. Football, equestrian, lacrosse, all of it. Athletic scholarships do not exist at this level, full stop. Recruited athletes are funded through academic and need-based aid like everybody else.
- Georgia families: HOPE and Zell do not work the same way here as at UGA. At a Georgia private college, HOPE and Zell pay a fixed tuition assistance amount capped at 12 credit hours. They do not cover full tuition. More on this in the cost section.
- Test scores are genuinely optional, including for money. Berry does not require the ACT or SAT for admission, for merit, or for Honors. You can send them if they help, and Honors specifically encourages it, but nobody is going to be shut out of a scholarship for not testing.

If you are a Georgia family, this is the paragraph to read twice. HOPE and Zell Miller do apply at Berry, and Berry reports that 93% of its entering Georgia students qualified for one of them. But the math at a private college is different. At a public school, Zell covers 100% of in-state tuition. At an eligible private college like Berry, HOPE and Zell pay a set tuition assistance amount capped at 12 credit hours, not full tuition. It is real money and worth having. It is not the same instrument.

Also worth knowing: the GTEG (Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant) exists specifically because private-college students do not get the state subsidy public students do. It is Georgia money that only Georgia students at Georgia private colleges can get. It rides on the same one-time GSFAPPS application as HOPE and Zell.
FAQ — Cost of Attendance at Berry College
Does anybody actually pay $59,545 to go to Berry?
Very few families do. The average federal net price is roughly $21,600 per year after grants and scholarships, which is about 36% of the sticker price. Berry reports that essentially all of its students receive some form of aid. The published total is the starting line, not the finish line.
Why is there no in-state versus out-of-state price?
Berry is private, so there is one tuition rate and everybody pays it. A student from Ohio and a student from Rome, Georgia see the same number on the bill. Where residency matters at Berry is on the aid side, because Georgia residents can bring HOPE, Zell Miller, and the GTEG to the table and out-of-state students cannot.
What is actually inside the $44,565 tuition and fees number?
Berry breaks it out as $44,190 in tuition, a $225 student activity fee, and a $150 technology fee. Housing and meals are a separate $14,980, and that figure assumes a traditional residence hall room with the unlimited meal plan, which is what first-year students are required to take unless they commute. Upperclass students on smaller meal plans typically pay less.
Do I have to file the FAFSA if we know we will not qualify for need-based aid?
Technically no. Berry says outright that students seeking only the Berry Academic scholarship or other merit awards do not need to file. But there is a catch worth thinking about: the FAFSA is what unlocks the Berry Scholarship from Alumni and Friends funds, the Signature Scholars programs, and federal loan eligibility. Skipping it closes doors that are hard to reopen mid-year. If you skip the FAFSA and you are a Georgia resident, you still need to file the GSFAPPS at GAfutures to get HOPE, Zell, or the GTEG.
When does Berry tell us what we will actually pay?
Earlier than most schools. First-year students admitted in the fall can see an initial financial aid offer as early as December. It is subject to revision as the FAFSA and other documents come in, but it means Early Action applicants often have a real number in hand before the holidays, while their friends applying elsewhere are still waiting until March.
Does the price go up every year?
Expect modest annual increases, the same as almost any private college. Berry’s academic scholarships are described as something you keep all four years as long as you stay in good academic standing, so the award amount tends to hold steady while the underlying costs drift upward. Budget for that gap rather than assuming year one’s net price is year four’s net price.
Our financial situation changed after we filed. Is there recourse?
Yes, and Berry is unusually specific about it. The financial aid office lists divorce, death of a parent or spouse, job loss continuing beyond four months, loss of other income or benefits, and unusual out-of-pocket medical expenses as circumstances that can trigger a professional judgment review. Contact your admission counselor if you are an incoming student. Nothing is guaranteed, but the door is explicitly open.
Is the debt picture any good?
Better than the sticker price suggests. Berry reports 46% of its graduates carry debt, averaging about $24,894, and 69% of students graduate in four years or less. That last number matters more than families expect, because a fifth year is the single most expensive thing that can happen to a college budget.

Berry lists different dates on different pages. Here is what each one is actually for.
- November 1 (Early Action): Complete your admission file by this date and Berry says you are considered for the full range of its scholarships. This is the date to circle.
- December 1 (Scholarship priority): Deadline for the applications that live inside the MyBerry Portal, meaning Signature Scholars and the leadership and talent awards. Miss it and you are into space-available territory.
- December (Offers start): Early Action admits can see an initial financial aid offer this month.
- January 15 (Regular Decision): Last date for full academic scholarship consideration. Portal applications submitted now are reviewed only if funding remains.
- February 15 (FAFSA priority): Berry’s stated FAFSA priority date, which drives the need-based Alumni and Friends funds.
Parent rule of thumb: treat November 1 as your real deadline. Every other date on this list falls in behind it, and hitting the first one means you never have to think about the rest.

🧠 What “Holistic” Means When You Are Trying to Budget
Families are used to the Alabama or Mississippi model, where you find your row on a chart and read your number. Berry does not work that way, and pretending otherwise sets you up for a bad surprise in December. Two things drive where a student lands inside the $12,500 to $25,000 band:
- Grades. The transcript itself, across four years.
- How hard the courses were. Berry says explicitly that it looks at the difficulty of your classes. A 3.8 built on AP and dual enrollment reads differently than a 3.8 built on the lightest available schedule.
Practical translation: if your student is a junior, the single highest-return move is taking the harder course next year, not chasing another test sitting. Berry does not require the test at all.

Is there a GPA or test score that guarantees a Berry scholarship?
No. Berry does not publish one and does not operate one. The published 2025 range was $12,500 to $25,000 per year, and placement inside that range comes out of a full review of grades and course rigor.
Do we have to apply separately for the academic scholarship?
No. This is the one Berry award that requires nothing beyond the admission application. Every admitted freshman and transfer is considered automatically. The awards that do need a separate application are covered in the two sections below.
Do we need to send test scores to get merit money?
No. Berry is test-optional for admission and for scholarships. If scores strengthen the picture you can send them (Berry’s SAT code is 5059 and ACT code is 0798), but no award is gated behind them.
Is the scholarship renewable for four years?
Yes. Berry describes the academic scholarship as something a student keeps all four years, or all remaining years for a transfer, as long as good academic standing is maintained. That is a lighter renewal condition than the specific GPA thresholds many schools attach.
Can the academic scholarship stack with other Berry aid?
With need-based grants and outside scholarships, generally yes. The exception is the Signature Scholars programs, which are structured as a capped family contribution and therefore absorb academic merit rather than adding to it. That is not Berry being stingy; it is a different kind of instrument, and it usually leaves families paying less overall.
Does the FAFSA affect the academic scholarship?
Not directly. Berry states that students seeking only the academic or other merit scholarships do not need to file. The FAFSA is what unlocks the need-based side, which at Berry is a large share of the total money.
What about transfer students?
Transfers are automatically considered too. Berry reviews academic performance for new freshmen and transfer students alike, and the four-year renewal language explicitly covers a transfer’s remaining years.

The first three are all Signature Scholars, and they share one application. Students answer questions and rank the three programs by interest and fit; Berry decides which one aligns best. So you are not choosing between three lottery tickets. You are buying one ticket with three ways to win. WinShape sits outside that system entirely and has its own application through WinShape, not through Berry.
⚖️ The Honest Trade-Off Nobody Puts in the Brochure
A $6,000 family contribution against a $59,545 sticker price is one of the better deals in Southern private higher education. It is also a real commitment, and families should go in clear-eyed. Gate Scholars, for example, work campus jobs through the academic year and the summer, averaging about 16 hours a week during school and up to 40 hours a week during campus breaks, with a portion of those earnings applied straight to the bill.
That is not a work-study line item. That is a schedule. For the right student it is transformative, and Berry’s own framing is that scholars graduate with little or no debt plus four years of professional experience. For a student who wants to spend spring break at home or take an unpaid internship in another city, it is a genuine constraint. Have that conversation in October, not in April.
❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs
Do I apply to Bonner, Gate, and Whitehead separately?
No. One Signature Scholars application covers all three. You rank them by interest and fit during the application and interview process, and Berry places you where the alignment is strongest.
Where do I actually find the application?
Apply for admission to Berry first. Then log in to the MyBerry Portal and open the Scholarships tab. Berry notes that this tab updates as admission decisions go out, so if it looks empty early, check back.
What is the deadline?
December 1 for maximum consideration. Applications submitted by January 15 are reviewed on a space-available basis, which for a cohort program with a fixed number of seats often means the answer is already no.
Is financial need required?
For all three Signature Scholars programs, yes. Berry describes them as competitive, need-based scholarships, and the FAFSA is part of the file. WinShape is merit-based and structured differently.
Will a Signature Scholars award stack on top of the Berry academic scholarship?
Not in the way families usually mean. Because the award is defined as a capped $6,000 family contribution rather than a dollar amount, it absorbs standard academic merit instead of adding to it. The upside is that the $6,000 is the number, and it does not move based on what else you did or did not win.
How much is the WinShape award and does it require anything unusual?
WinShape is a $16,000 per year merit-based award. It expects a real commitment to a Christian discipleship community: living on Mountain Campus, participating in a small discipleship group for the first two years, then moving into a Community Impact Team for years three and four. Apply for Berry admission first, then apply separately at college.winshape.org.
Does Berry offer any full-tuition or full-ride scholarship?
No, and we want to be direct about that. Nothing at Berry covers 100% of costs. The Signature Scholars programs come closest and still leave a $6,000 family contribution. If a full ride is the requirement, Berry is not the school that delivers it.
Is Berry a National Merit or QuestBridge partner?

The Honors Program at Berry College
That said, the Berry Honors Program is genuinely selective and genuinely worth pursuing. It welcomes roughly 10 percent of each incoming class, and members get access to honors coursework, dedicated study abroad options including Berry’s program at Glasgow, and leadership, service and cultural opportunities reserved for the group. Students who finish the requirements complete an original honors thesis and are awarded an Honors degree at commencement.
How Honors Admission Works
- You apply to Berry first. Honors is not something you apply to alongside admission. Students who are admitted and either meet certain criteria or are flagged as promising get invited to apply.
- There is an essay. A short one, reviewed by the Honors Committee, which is made up of the program directors and honors faculty from across campus.
- Review is holistic, and rigor matters. Berry says the committee values not just a strong essay but a record of challenging coursework across a variety of academic areas. Breadth, not just a high number.
- Tests are optional here too, though the committee encourages submitting them as an additional factor. For reference, students admitted to the program for fall 2020 averaged a 4.15 recalculated GPA, a 31 ACT, and a 1360 SAT. Treat those as a picture of the cohort, not a cutoff.
- The door reopens. Students who are not admitted, or who did not apply at enrollment, may apply after their first semester with a Berry GPA of 3.5 or higher. This is the detail worth remembering, because it takes the pressure off senior year.
This institution does not offer designated Honors College scholarships at this time.
Honors Program — FAQs (Berry College)
Does getting into Honors come with a scholarship?
No. Berry does not attach a dedicated award to Honors Program membership. Honors students receive the same Berry Academic Scholarship, Signature Scholars, and talent awards that any other student can receive. Honors is an academic credential, not a financial one.
Can I apply to Honors on my own?
Not initially. Berry invites admitted students who meet its criteria or who stand out in review. If you want to be in that pool, the lever is the strength and difficulty of your high school transcript.
What if my student is a late bloomer?
This is where Berry is more forgiving than most. A student who was not invited, or who was and declined, can apply after one semester at Berry with a 3.5 GPA. Very few honors programs leave that door open so plainly.
How selective is it, really?
About 10 percent of each incoming class. At Berry’s size that is a small, tightly connected group, which is largely the point.
Is there more work, or harder work?
Different work. Honors coursework emphasizes depth and discussion, and the program culminates in an original thesis. The thesis is the real commitment, and it is also the thing that shows up on graduate school and professional school applications.
Where does honors show up after graduation?

Berry organizes its academics into four schools, and the strength is spread more evenly across them than at a school with one famous department.
- Sciences and pre-health: This is where Berry’s outcomes are most striking. 86% of pre-med students accepted to medical school, 99% of pre-law students accepted to law school, and 67% of pre-vet students accepted to veterinary school. Biology is the most-awarded degree on campus. Nursing runs a CCNE-accredited BSN.
- Animal science and the working campus: Berry’s land is not scenery. Students work real agricultural and equine operations, which is what makes the animal science and pre-veterinary pipeline function the way it does. If your student has been horse-obsessed or vet-track since middle school, this campus is built for them in a way brochures cannot convey.
- Environmental science: Woodlands, meadows and streams across 27,000 acres, used as a research site rather than admired from a window. Undergraduate research is a normal expectation here, not a rare opportunity.
- Campbell School of Business: AACSB-accredited, which puts it in the top tier of business programs globally, and paired with an MBA for students who want to continue.
- Charter School of Education and Human Sciences: Georgia teacher preparation with graduate pathways through the MAT, MEd, and EdS, all approved by the GaPSC.
- Engineering, by an unusual route: Berry runs a dual-degree engineering program with Georgia Tech. Students who want a Tech engineering degree but not a 45,000-student environment for all four years have a legitimate path here that most families never know exists.
- Music and theatre: NASM-accredited music, with audition-based awards that stack on top of academic merit. Worth pursuing even for non-majors.
One more thing that shapes the experience: Berry is NCAA Division III, a founding member of the Southern Athletic Association, fielding 23 sports including football, equestrian, and lacrosse.
