OU admits a little over three out of four applicants (22,660 of 29,195 for fall 2025), and just over half of the freshman class comes from outside Oklahoma. That out-of-state crowd is no accident. OU’s merit awards are built to knock out-of-state tuition way down, and they’re mostly automatic. Getting in is rarely the hard part here. Getting every dollar you qualify for is.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at the University of Oklahoma (Read This First)
Skip the scholarship essays and you skip the money. The OU application has a short scholarship section. If your student leaves those questions blank, OU says they won’t be considered for leadership, community service or major-based scholarships. That includes President’s Community Scholars, Henderson Scholars and every departmental award.
December 15 is the real deadline. OU will take applications until February 1, but scholarship consideration closes December 15. (The November 1 Early Action date is for admission decisions, not money.)
One merit award, period. OU gives the single highest grid award your student qualifies for. Valedictorian doesn’t stack on top, and RaiseMe micro-scholarships are a guaranteed floor, not extra cash.
Test-optional has a price tag out of state. A test-optional non-resident tops out at $12,000 a year. A 31 ACT unlocks $17,500. OU superscores, accepts self-reported scores, and counts retakes through April 30.
Oklahoma families: watch two dates. Crimson Commitment needs the OU application in by February 1 and the FAFSA by March 1. OU Onward also needs the FAFSA by March 1.

💰 Cost of Attendance at University of Oklahoma: 2026–2027 Rates
Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.
📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest University of Oklahoma has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly
$600 to $1,600 more than the in-state total below.$1,000 to $2,500 more than the out-of-state total below.
In-State: billed cost per year
$31,884
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$15,503
Housing & meals (typical)
$16,381
Total billed cost
$31,884
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$50,562
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$34,181
Housing & meals (typical)
$16,381
Total billed cost
$50,562
That is $18,678 more per year than Oklahoma residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.
Average federal net price: $18,574 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.
📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options
Academic Common Market (ACM): OU waives non-resident tuition for a short list of programs, and the list depends on your home state. Undergraduate examples include aerospace engineering (Arkansas, Delaware, Kentucky), ballet performance or pedagogy (Arkansas, Delaware, Kentucky, Louisiana, Tennessee, West Virginia), musical theatre (Arkansas, Delaware, Louisiana, South Carolina), architecture (Delaware, West Virginia) and paleontology (Arkansas). Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland and Mississippi residents currently have no OU programs on the list. Your home state's ACM coordinator certifies you after OU admits you.
Nebraska meteorology waiver: Nebraska residents who graduate from a Nebraska high school can have non-resident tuition waived for up to eight consecutive semesters if they major in meteorology.
Merit works like a waiver: OU's out-of-state merit awards are applied as non-resident tuition waivers of $12,000 to $17,500 a year, and children or grandchildren of OU graduates get a one-time legacy waiver of up to $1,000.
Kitchen-Table Math for Out-of-State Families
Out-of-state tuition at OU is $24,210 a year, on top of the same $9,971 in fees everyone pays. OU’s top automatic out-of-state award is $17,500 a year, applied straight to that tuition. A student with a 31 ACT and a 3.5 scholarship GPA is looking at roughly $6,710 in tuition before fees and housing. That’s why so many families from Texas and beyond end up comparing OU to their own state flagship.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at the University of Oklahoma
Why is out-of-state so much more expensive?
It’s all in the tuition line. Residents pay $5,532 in tuition and non-residents pay $24,210. Fees ($9,971) and on-campus housing and food ($16,381) are the same for everyone. OU’s out-of-state merit awards go directly at that tuition gap.
What is flat-rate tuition?
Full-time undergraduates pay the tuition and hourly fees for 15 credit hours whether they take 12 or 21. Taking 18 hours a semester costs no more in tuition than 15, which can shave a semester off the degree. Some course fees still vary.
Are there costs the sticker price doesn’t show?
Yes. OU estimates a one-time $2,000 laptop cost for architecture, art, engineering, computer science and petroleum engineering majors. Professional pilot majors add an estimated $15,000 a year in flight costs. Books, transportation and personal expenses add about $8,200 a year on OU’s own estimate.
Can Oklahoma families go to OU tuition-free?
Many can. If your student qualifies for Oklahoma’s Promise, Crimson Commitment covers tuition and up to $10,000 a year in fees. If your family’s adjusted gross income is between $60,000 and $75,000 and you don’t qualify for Oklahoma’s Promise, OU Onward covers tuition and average fees starting fall 2027. Neither one covers housing.
Can out-of-state students pay in-state tuition?
Only in narrow cases. The Academic Common Market covers a handful of OU majors, and which ones depends on your home state. Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Maryland residents currently have none. Nebraska residents majoring in meteorology can get non-resident tuition waived. For everyone else, merit awards do the heavy lifting.
What do families actually pay?
The federal average net price is about $18,574 a year. That’s what families paid after grants and scholarships, before loans. Your number depends heavily on residency, test scores and income, so run OU’s net price calculator.
December 15: Automatic merit, scholarship essays, Henderson, President’s Community Scholars and all major-based awards. This is the big one.
January 15: Honors Medical Humanities Scholars and Pre-Law Scholars applications.
February 1: Last day to apply to OU and still qualify for Crimson Commitment.
March 1: FAFSA deadline for Crimson Commitment and OU Onward.
April 30: Last day for a new ACT or SAT score to bump your student up a tier, and the deadline for National Merit Finalists to name OU.
Parent rule of thumb: if it involves money, assume December 15.
Automatic Merit Scholarships: University of Oklahoma
Apply by December 15 and OU automatically matches your student to the highest award on its grid. There’s no separate form. OU superscores the ACT and SAT, accepts self-reported scores, and recalculates every applicant’s GPA on its own weighted scale (called the “scholarship GPA”) that gives extra credit for AP, IB, honors and dual-credit classes.

Residency
Based on published cutoffs for entering freshmen. Always verify with the college before finalizing plans.
Start with your state. The awards in this first group come from the state, not the college. They are decided by residency and the FAFSA, and they stack on top of whatever automatic merit award the college gives below. If you live out of state, use the toggle above and these will step aside.

How to Apply

Strategic Detail
OU lists the total value at $124,850 for residents. The State Regents award is $24,000 a year at OU for automatic qualifiers, and students at Oklahoma public universities also receive a tuition waiver. Data last verified Oct 22, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.
Note: Students receive one merit award, the highest they qualify for. Test-optional applicants are considered holistically: $1,000 to $2,000 a year for Oklahoma residents and $6,000 to $12,000 a year out of state. If your student earned RaiseMe micro-scholarships in high school, that total is the minimum OU guarantees. It is not added on top of a larger award.
Automatic Merit FAQs (University of Oklahoma)
When is the deadline for automatic merit?
Apply by December 15. OU still accepts new ACT or SAT scores and your seventh-semester transcript through April 30 for a possible upgrade.
Does OU superscore?
Yes, for both the ACT and SAT, and self-reported scores count until enrollment, when they must be verified.
How much does a higher score actually matter out of state?
A lot. Going from a 28 ACT (University Scholarship, $14,500 a year) to a 29 (Distinguished Scholar, $16,500) is worth $8,000 over four years. Reaching a 31 (Award of Excellence, $17,500) adds another $4,000.
Can my student stack the Valedictorian award with grid merit?
No. Oklahoma residents ranked 1 or 2 in their class are considered for $2,500 a year, but they get either that or their grid award, whichever is higher.
What does the National Merit Finalist package include?
For residents it totals $147,660: full tuition for up to five years, the $24,000-a-year Rising Scholars award, stipends, a $6,000 first-year housing scholarship and a $2,000 research or study-abroad stipend. Out-of-state Finalists get $157,050, led by a full non-resident tuition waiver. Leftover tuition funds can carry into an OU graduate program. Your student must name OU as their first choice by April 30.
What is the Oklahoma Rising Scholars Award?
It’s the state’s top academic award (formerly Academic Scholars). Oklahoma residents who score at the 99.5th percentile, which was an ACT sum score of 103 or a 1560 SAT in the most recent cycle, get $24,000 a year at OU plus a tuition waiver. A test score on file is required.
Do transfer students get automatic awards?
Yes. Apply by March 1 for fall. Awards run two years, from $1,000 to $4,000 a year for residents and $2,000 to $10,000 for non-residents, based on transfer GPA.
OU doesn’t run one big invitation-only full-ride competition. Its biggest awards are automatic (National Merit, Rising Scholars) or need-based guarantees (Crimson Commitment, OU Onward). The competitive money here is decided mostly by the short scholarship essays on the admission application, so treat those like a real assignment.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs
What is President’s Community Scholars?
OU’s most selective service-based program. Roughly 100 students are picked from more than 10,000 applicants, based on the two leadership and community service essays in the application’s scholarship section.
How does the Henderson Scholars Program work?
It’s $10,000 over four years ($2,500 a year) plus a cohort with a first-year living-learning community. OU picks 20 to 25 freshmen a year. Your student needs at least a 3.25 GPA and strong essays by December 15; semifinalists then record a short video interview.
Who wins the National Award Scholarship?
Forty students a year (15 residents and 25 non-residents) with College Board recognition or AP Scholar status, a 29+ ACT (or SAT equivalent) and a 3.5 GPA. Consideration is automatic with the freshman application.
What are Community Enrichment and Sooner Traditions?
Community Enrichment recognizes cultural and heritage involvement and adds a stackable $2,500 a year for residents or $3,500 for non-residents. Sooner Traditions adds $2,000 a year for graduates of 26 partner high schools, mostly in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa areas.
Who qualifies for OU Onward?
Oklahoma families with a federal AGI between $60,000 and $75,000 who don’t qualify for Oklahoma’s Promise. It starts fall 2027, covers tuition and average fees, and requires the FAFSA by March 1.
Does OU have a competitive full ride?
Not on its published scholarship pages. The closest thing is the National Merit Finalist package for Oklahoma residents, which roughly covers the full published direct cost of the first year.
🧠 Parent Strategy: Pick the Major Before December 15
At OU, most departmental money is tied to the major your student lists on the application. OU automatically considers them for that college’s freshman scholarships, and some majors trigger an extra short essay. “Undecided” can quietly cost money.
List the most likely major on the OU application.
Answer every scholarship and major-based essay by December 15.
File the FAFSA by December 15 if you want the Financial Aid Scholarships.
After year one, apply in CASH (October 1 to February 1) every single year.
Parent translation: the grid award is automatic. Everything else is “you had to ask.”
💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships
These awards sit outside OU’s one-award-per-student merit grid, so they can make a real dent. Several are tied to a specific major, home state or audition.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
What is the Rath Foundation Scholarship?
It’s $20,000 a year ($80,000 total) from Price College for incoming freshmen committed to a business major. Your student needs top-10% class rank or a 27 ACT / 1320 SAT, plus leadership and activities. Renewal requires a 3.25 GPA.
Is there money specifically for accounting majors?
Yes. The John T. Steed Memorial Scholarship pays $7,500 a year to one standout incoming accounting major, renewable with strong performance.
We live in Nebraska. Is the meteorology waiver real?
Yes. Nebraska residents who graduate from a Nebraska high school and major in meteorology can have non-resident tuition waived for up to eight consecutive semesters. At 2026-27 rates that’s worth about $18,678 a year. Email scholarships@ou.edu to confirm eligibility.
Can a non-music major get a band scholarship?
Yes. OU Bands offers non-major scholarships to top players who march in the Pride of Oklahoma in the fall and play in a concert ensemble in the spring. It takes an audition, a resume and two letters.
Do OU graduates’ kids get anything?
Out-of-state freshmen whose parent, step-parent, grandparent or step-grandparent graduated from OU get a one-time waiver of up to $1,000. Children of OU employees can get resident tuition waived through the Dependent Child Tuition Waiver.
The Joe C. and Carole Kerr McClendon Honors College gives high-achieving students smaller classes, research opportunities and preparation for national scholarships, without changing their major. Admission is a separate application filed after your student is admitted to OU. The curriculum is 18 honors credit hours plus a thesis.
Minimums for incoming freshmen: 3.75 GPA or top 10% of class, and a 30 ACT or 1360 SAT (superscores count), plus an essay.
Test-optional or below the score line: Students with a 3.75+ GPA get a holistic review, especially with a heavy AP, IB or dual-credit load.
Deadlines: January 15 for Medical Humanities Scholars and Pre-Law Scholars; April 1 is the priority Honors College deadline.

Most Honors awards are for current students and are applied for in CASH between October 1 and February 1. The Vision Scholarship is the main one aimed at incoming freshmen.
The quiet perk: guaranteed paths to med and law school. Medical Humanities Scholars receive provisional acceptance to the OU College of Medicine, and Pre-Law Scholars to the OU College of Law, contingent on GPA and MCAT or LSAT scores. Both require an ACT or SAT score and close January 15.
What Honors Students Get Beyond Money
Honors at Oxford: A summer program at Brasenose College, Oxford, with its own scholarships (Boren, Melanie L. Wright, McClendon).
First-Year Research Experience: A competitive spring lab research course open to freshmen in any major.
Living-learning community: Honors floors in Dunham College with dedicated mentors.
National scholarship coaching: Advising for Rhodes, Goldwater, Truman and similar awards.
Honors College FAQs (University of Oklahoma)
Is Honors admission automatic for high scorers?
No. Your student must be admitted to OU first, then submit the Honors application and essay. Applications can take up to four weeks to process.
Can test-optional students get into Honors?
Yes, through holistic review if they have at least a 3.75 GPA and the most rigorous coursework available. They can’t apply to Medical Humanities or Pre-Law Scholars, which require test scores.
What is the Vision Scholarship?
Ten incoming Honors freshmen with financial need and a 3.4+ GPA receive $2,500 a semester for up to two years. They must take the Honors Perspectives course in their first year.
Does Honors add a big scholarship on top of merit?
Not by itself. Honors money is mostly smaller, need-based and study-abroad awards for current students. The large awards still come from the merit grid and National Merit.
OU is Oklahoma’s flagship research university, now playing in the SEC. Families tend to know it for football, but the academic side has a few programs that draw students from all over the country, and some of them are hard to find anywhere else.
Nationally Known Program: School of Meteorology: OU calls it the largest meteorology program in the nation, with about 400 undergraduates. Classes are held inside the National Weather Center, which also houses the National Severe Storms Laboratory, the Storm Prediction Center and the local National Weather Service office. If your kid has been chasing storms on radar since middle school, this is the place.
Business (Price College): The most popular path at OU, about 30% of bachelor’s degrees. Strong in finance, accounting, energy management and entrepreneurship.
Petroleum and energy engineering: The Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy has deep ties to the oil and gas industry. Aerospace engineering in the Gallogly College of Engineering is notable enough to be on several states’ Academic Common Market lists.
Performing arts: The Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre and the ballet programs pull talent from across the region; both are ACM-eligible for several states.
Journalism and international studies: The Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication and the David L. Boren College of International Studies are both well known.
Architecture, political science and health sciences: The Gibbs College of Architecture offers professional degrees; health professions programs run through OU’s Harold Hamm Health Campus in Oklahoma City.
National scholars: OU says it’s the only university whose students have won the Goldwater, Mitchell, Truman, Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright and NSEP scholarships in the same year.

Here’s the honest picture of OU. For out-of-state families with solid test scores, it’s one of the better deals in the country: a 31 ACT turns a $24,210 tuition bill into something closer to in-state prices, automatically. For Oklahoma families, the story is need, not stats. Between Oklahoma’s Promise, Crimson Commitment and the new OU Onward, a lot of in-state students can get tuition covered entirely.
Where families lose money at OU is the paperwork. The scholarship essays, the major your student picks, a retake before April 30, the FAFSA by March 1. None of it is hard, but every piece has a date. If your student is a weather kid, a future accountant, a dancer or a Nebraska meteorology major, take a second look at the hidden gems. Those are the awards most families never hear about.
Your kid did everything right. That does not mean the money follows.
Most families build a college list first and think about scholarships second, which is backwards. This free four-part series shows you where the money actually comes from, and how to build a list around it.
After the series, about once a month, sometimes twice during application season. No drip funnels, no affiliate pitches, and we never sell your information. Unsubscribe anytime.
