One thing to sort out before anything else: UNG is five campuses operating as one university, and the money rules are not the same at all five. Dahlonega is the residential campus and the home of the Corps of Cadets. Gainesville has housing and its own out-of-state waiver. Oconee, Cumming, and Blue Ridge are commuter campuses. Where your student is admitted changes which awards they can even apply for, so pick the campus first and then read the scholarship pages.
The other thing worth knowing early: UNG does not publish a merit grid. There is no chart where a 3.7 and a 27 gets you a set dollar amount. 🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at UNG (Read This First)
Out-of-state cadets pay in-state tuition. UNG says every out-of-state cadet receives the Cadet Grant on acceptance, which drops tuition and fees to the resident rate. It is the largest discount at UNG and it never appears on a scholarship list, because it is not technically a scholarship.
UNG is on the Common App, but you would never know it from their website. UNG is a Common App member and accepts first-year applications there with no essay and no recommendation letter required. Every “Apply Now” button on ung.edu instead points to GAfutures, the Georgia state application. Either route works for a bachelor’s applicant, and the Common App version is usually the lighter lift for out-of-state students already using it. Georgia residents should still create a GAfutures account regardless, because that is where HOPE and Zell Miller live.
You can be admitted to UNG without being admitted to a bachelor’s program. Applicants who miss the four-year requirements are automatically considered for the associate pathway instead. The acceptance letter still says congratulations. Read which program it names.
Deadlines depend on the campus. Fall applications close Mar. 1 for Dahlonega and July 1 for Blue Ridge, Cumming, Gainesville, Oconee, and online. UNG also warns it may hit capacity and stop accepting students before the posted date.

If your student is a Georgia resident, the closest thing to automatic merit at UNG is not a UNG program at all. UNG puts it at about $85,000 or more over four years, covering tuition, fees, housing, meals, books, and uniforms. The state funds 42 of them a year for Georgia high school seniors.
What is the catch on GMSS?
It is not a scholarship with a service bonus. It is a service commitment with a scholarship attached. The student needs a 3.0 GPA, a nomination from their Georgia state representative or senator, acceptance as a regular freshman cadet, and the ability to meet Georgia Army National Guard enlistment standards. After graduation they commission as an officer and carry an eight-year total obligation. Families should treat that as the headline, not the money.
When is the GMSS deadline?

UNG’s waiver menu. Beyond the border waivers, UNG lists nonresident tuition waivers for active-duty military stationed in Georgia and their families, Georgia National Guard and Reserve members, separated service members within 36 months, University System of Georgia employees and their dependents, Georgia public school and technical college employees and their dependents, students who relocated to Georgia for full-time employment, and nonresident students whose parent is domiciled in Georgia.
