Christopher Newport is a public university in Newport News, Virginia, with about 4,400 undergraduates and a campus where 93% of Fall 2025 freshmen lived in the residence halls. Getting in is not the hard part: CNU admitted 84% of freshman applicants for Fall 2025. The real competition happens one level up, in the scholarship programs, and those run on essays and an interview as much as on grades. CNU is test-optional, and only 441 of the 1,164 freshmen who enrolled in Fall 2025 reported an SAT score.
🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Christopher Newport (Read This First)
There’s no automatic merit for Virginia residents. The only no-application award is the $3,000 Out-of-State Incentive Scholarship, and even that one is holistic and handed out while funds last. For in-state families, merit money comes through the President’s Leadership Program (PLP) or the Honors Program.
The interview is part of the scholarship application. PLP and Honors both require a supplemental essay and an interview. Get both done by December 15 for priority consideration. The final deadline is February 15.
One scholarship, even if your student gets into both programs. Students admitted to PLP and Honors receive one award. The only step up is the $10,000 Presidential Scholar award, which comes with a second faculty interview.
A donor’s name on your award letter usually isn’t extra money. CNU uses nearly 70 named donor scholarships to fund PLP and Honors awards, and says plainly that they are not an additional award.
The money is tied to living on campus. PLP and Honors scholarships are applied to room and board, and CNU expects students to live on campus for their first three years. Moving off campus can cost a student most university scholarships.
File the FAFSA by March 1, even if you think you won’t qualify. CNU’s Office of Financial Aid picks recipients for more than 50 donor scholarships each summer, and many of them depend on the FAFSA.
About the “No superscore” tag above. CNU doesn’t post a score policy on its own site. Test prep sites that track College Board’s Score Choice data list CNU as using your best SAT section scores, so ask admissions if your student has more than one SAT date.

What the Table Doesn’t Show
CNU expects students to live on campus for three years, so housing is not an easy place to cut costs. Students in the first-year halls are also required to choose the unlimited dining plan.
CNU’s own full budget for 2026-2027, which adds books, transportation, and personal expenses, is $38,010 in-state and $53,830 out-of-state.
Business majors in the Luter School of Business pay an extra $50 per credit hour. CNU also lists a $500 non-refundable enrollment fee and a $275 yearly parking fee.
Out-of-state students pay $14,422 more in tuition and fees than Virginia residents. The main offset is the $3,000 Out-of-State Incentive Scholarship.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Christopher Newport University
How much does CNU cost for a Virginia student?
Tuition and fees are $17,616 for 2026-2027. A two-person suite in a first-year hall, the required unlimited meal plan, and the housing communications fee add $13,400, for $31,016 in direct costs. CNU’s full budget, including books, transportation, and personal expenses, is $38,010.
What does it cost for out-of-state students?
Tuition and fees are $32,038, which brings direct costs to $45,438 and CNU’s full budget to $53,830. The $3,000 Out-of-State Incentive Scholarship covers about a fifth of the $14,422 tuition gap.
Does CNU offer tuition reciprocity or out-of-state waivers?
Not for incoming undergraduates. We couldn’t find a regional tuition exchange or out-of-state waiver on CNU’s tuition or financial aid pages. In-state tuition depends on Virginia domicile, and students need to answer every residency question on the admission application to be considered.
Can my student live off campus to save money?
Usually not for the first three years. CNU expects first-, second-, and third-year students to live on campus. Exemptions exist for situations like living with a relative within about 25 miles, but CNU warns that living off campus affects eligibility for most university scholarships, including PLP and Honors awards. Incoming freshmen have to request an exemption by June 1.
Why does CNU’s cost of attendance page show a higher housing number?
CNU budgets $8,902 for housing as an estimate across all residence halls. Our table uses the billed rate for a two-person suite in a first-year hall, $7,470 a year plus the $360 housing communications fee. Upper-level apartments cost more, so expect housing to rise after freshman year.
Is the average net price really about $23,148?
That is the most recent federal average for full-time first-year students who received grant or scholarship aid. It’s a helpful benchmark, not a quote. CNU’s Net Price Calculator will give you an estimate based on your own family’s finances.
Will CNU negotiate our financial aid offer?
CNU says that as a public university its need-based packages are non-negotiable, and it isn’t able to discount tuition the way private colleges can. If your family’s finances have changed, ask the Office of Financial Aid about its special circumstances process.
Starting June 1 before senior year: Interviews open. Students can interview before they even apply, and the interview counts toward PLP and Honors.
December 15: Priority deadline for PLP and Honors essays and interviews. Priority decisions arrive by mail on February 1.
February: The Bonner Service Scholars application opens on CNU Engage.
February 15: Final deadline for PLP and Honors, with decisions on April 1.
March 1: FAFSA priority date for need-based aid and CNU’s donor scholarships.
Summer: The Office of Financial Aid picks donor scholarship recipients.
Parent rule of thumb: if your student wants merit money at CNU, December 15 is the date that matters, no matter which admission plan they choose.
Automatic Merit Scholarships at Christopher Newport University
CNU does not have an automatic scholarship ladder based on GPA and test scores. The only award that doesn’t require a separate application is the $3,000 Out-of-State Incentive Scholarship, and it’s based on a holistic review of high school grades, awarded while funds last. Virginia families should look at PLP and the Honors Program below.

CNU offers a renewable $3,000 scholarship to new out-of-state freshmen based on a holistic review of cumulative high school academic performance. There is no published GPA or test score cutoff, and CNU is test-optional. Students offered direct admission are notified by the Office of Admission. Other out-of-state applicants are awarded on a time- and funds-available basis after the official notification date for their application plan. CNU notes that additional out-of-state scholarships sometimes run through special campaigns such as direct admission.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Out-of-state students with solid high school transcripts. Because CNU awards it on a time- and funds-available basis, applying early is the one lever families control.
Data last verified Sep 17, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.
Note: CNU is test-optional for both admission and its scholarship programs. SAT, ACT, and CLT scores are considered if your student sends them, and students without scores are reviewed with more weight on course rigor.
Does CNU give automatic scholarships to Virginia residents?
No. CNU’s merit money for incoming freshmen runs through the President’s Leadership Program and the Honors Program, and both require essays and an interview. The only award without a separate application is for out-of-state students.
How does the Out-of-State Incentive Scholarship work?
It’s a renewable $3,000 award for new out-of-state freshmen, based on a holistic review of high school academic performance. There’s no published GPA or test score cutoff, and no separate application.
Is the out-of-state award guaranteed?
No. Students offered direct admission hear about it from the Office of Admission. Everyone else is considered after the decision date for their application plan, on a time- and funds-available basis. Applying under an earlier plan is the one thing families can control.
Do we need to send test scores?
No. CNU is test-optional. Scores are considered if you send them, and they can help a student with a lighter transcript, but students without scores are still reviewed.
Can the out-of-state award be combined with a PLP or Honors scholarship?
CNU doesn’t say. Look for it as its own line on the financial aid offer, and call the Office of Financial Aid if it’s missing.
Is it renewable?
Yes, CNU lists it as renewable. It doesn’t publish the renewal rules, so ask what GPA and enrollment status your student needs to keep it all four years.
At CNU, most merit money for incoming freshmen flows through two programs: the President’s Leadership Program (PLP) and the Honors Program. Your student applies by checking “Yes” in the Scholarships section of the Common App, writing a supplemental essay, and completing a required interview. The interview is optional for admission but required for these programs, so don’t skip it.

CNU says Army ROTC scholarships can cover full tuition and fees, with an option for room and board, plus a monthly stipend and a $600 book allowance each semester. Ask how it interacts with a residential PLP or Honors award.
Here’s the big picture. CNU won’t hand out large awards for numbers alone, and it doesn’t offer full-tuition merit scholarships to incoming freshmen. What it does reward is a student who shows up to the interview ready to talk about leadership, service, or real academic curiosity. The awards are modest, but for a Virginia family they can make CNU competitive with larger state schools.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs
When are the PLP and Honors deadlines?
Preference goes to students who finish the essays and interview by December 15, and those students are notified by mail on February 1. The final deadline is February 15, with notification on April 1.
Is the interview really required?
Yes. CNU’s application requirements say an interview is required to be considered for PLP or Honors. Interviews run 20 to 30 minutes, one-on-one, either in person or virtually, and family members can ask their own questions afterward. CNU’s newest scholarship page leaves the interview out, but its application page lists it as required, so plan on it.
How much is the PLP scholarship?
$1,000 or $5,000 a year for each year the student lives on campus. CNU says competitive applicants typically have at least a 3.5 GPA and a 1250 SAT or 26 ACT, but test-optional students are considered too.
What is the Presidential Scholar award?
The top students selected for both PLP and Honors may be invited to a second interview with a faculty member. Presidential Scholars receive $10,000 a year plus extra funding for a cohort study abroad trip.
Are there awards for engineering or pre-med students?
Yes. The Canon Virginia, Inc. Leadership Scholarship is for PLP admits in computer engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering, and it comes with eligibility for a paid Canon internship after junior year. CNU’s newest scholarship page no longer lists Canon, so confirm it’s still offered. Riverside Medical Group Scholars are chosen from admitted pre-med students, who are invited to write an extra essay. Two freshman awards are listed.
What if my student forgot to check PLP or Honors on the Common App?
They can still apply through CNU’s applicant portal after submitting the Common App. Just watch the December 15 priority date.
Can international students get these scholarships?
CNU says eligible students who apply to Honors and PLP are considered for scholarships regardless of citizenship status.
How should my student prepare?
Treat the essay and interview like the main event. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder can help your student organize leadership and service stories before the interview.
🧠 Parent Strategy: CNU’s Quiet Money Is Picked From the FAFSA
CNU’s Office of Financial Aid chooses recipients for more than 50 donor scholarships every summer. Many of these require financial need, and CNU says you need the FAFSA in by March 1 to be considered for the need-based ones.
File the FAFSA by March 1 and list CNU’s school code, 003706.
If your student plays music, acts, or makes art, contact the department about an audition or portfolio review.
When the offer arrives, check any named award against CNU’s replacement scholarship list so you know what’s truly extra.
Parent translation: skipping the FAFSA because you assume you won’t get need-based aid can quietly take your student out of the running for most of CNU’s donor money.
💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships
These awards don’t get much attention, but they can fill real gaps. Some are wide open to anyone who files the FAFSA, and others are written for very specific students: out-of-state families with need, first-generation students, commuters, arts majors, and local Newport News students from the Community Captains program. CNU doesn’t publish dollar amounts for its donor scholarships, so we don’t list them.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
Do these need a separate application?
Many don’t. The Office of Financial Aid scholarships are selected each summer from eligible students, and the FAFSA is the key. Program awards like the Bonner, study abroad, and Student Affairs scholarships run through those offices instead.
How much are they worth?
CNU doesn’t publish amounts for its donor scholarships. Treat them as extra help, not something to count on when you compare offers.
Is there anything specifically for out-of-state students?
Yes. The Mary and Maury O’Connell Endowed Scholarship is for a full-time out-of-state student with financial need, with preference for history or business majors.
We live near Newport News or Hampton. Is there anything for local students?
Several. Community Captains participants can qualify for the Alumni Achievement and W. D. Scales scholarships. Graduates of public high schools in Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County, and York County can qualify for the Union Bank and Trust Peninsula scholarships. Commuter students with need can qualify for the Doughty Family Endowed Scholarship.
Is there help for first-generation students?
The Albert and Sydnor Moberg Endowed Scholarship is for first-generation students with financial need, with preference for PLP students. The Alumni Achievement scholarship also accepts first-generation Community Captains.
A scholarship with a donor’s name showed up on our award letter. Is that extra money?
Maybe not. Check CNU’s list of Foundation-Funded PLP and Honors Replacement Scholarships. If the name is on that list, it’s the funding source for your student’s PLP or Honors award, not an additional award.
What about after freshman year?
Many academic departments offer scholarships for continuing students in business, music, theater, STEM, history, and more. Have your student check CNU’s departmental scholarship list each year.
CNU’s Honors Program is built around interdisciplinary seminars and hands-on “honors inquiries.” It is not automatic: students apply separately through the Scholarships section of the Common App, write a supplemental essay, and complete the required interview. Getting into Honors is also how most strong students earn merit money at CNU.
Published benchmarks: 3.75 high school GPA and a 1310 SAT or 28 ACT. Test-optional students are considered, with more weight on course rigor and the interview.
Scholarship: Renewable $5,000 residential scholarship applied to room and board.
Program requirements: At least two honors inquiries chosen from study abroad, independent research, civic engagement, or internships. Honors seminars satisfy CNU’s liberal learning core requirements.
Deadlines: December 15 priority (decisions February 1) and February 15 final (decisions April 1).

The award is applied to room and board each semester, so students must live on campus and stay in good academic and program standing. 🕵

*CNU’s freshman scholarship pages list the Honors award at $5,000. The Honors Program’s own page describes awards of $5,000 to $7,500, so confirm the amount on your student’s offer. CNU doesn’t publish amounts for its supplemental Honors scholarships.
Deadline Note: CNU gives preference to students who complete the Honors essay and interview by December 15. Students can still apply through February 15, but early applicants are reviewed first.
Honors Money That Adds On vs. Money That Replaces
Adds on: CNU lists the Clark, Eakes, Drucker Smith, Honors Endowment, McLoughland, and Usry scholarships as awarded in addition to the annual Honors scholarship.
Replaces: The Karl Beamer and Wallace P. Greene scholarships are on CNU’s replacement list. They fund the Honors award rather than adding to it.
Need matters: The Eakes scholarship requires financial need, and the Clark scholarship gives preference to it. File the FAFSA by March 1.
Honors Program FAQs (Christopher Newport University)
Is Honors admission automatic?
No. Your student has to say “Yes” to Honors on the Common App, submit the supplemental essay, and complete the interview. Students who already submitted the Common App can still apply through CNU’s applicant portal.
How much is the Honors scholarship?
CNU’s freshman scholarship pages list a renewable $5,000 residential scholarship. The Honors Program page mentions awards up to $7,500, so check the amount on your offer.
Can Honors students earn more than the base scholarship?
Yes. Several Honors scholarships are awarded on top of the annual Honors award, including ones for students with financial need and students interested in creative writing. Most don’t have a public application, so staying in good standing matters.
What if my student gets into Honors and PLP?
They can do both programs but receive one scholarship. The strongest students in both may be invited to interview for the $10,000 Presidential Scholar award.
Does my student have to live on campus to keep it?
Yes. Honors scholarships are applied to room and board each semester, so students must live on campus and stay in good academic and program standing.
Christopher Newport feels more like a small liberal arts college than a typical state school. Classes are small, nearly every freshman lives on campus, and leadership and service are built into how the school recruits and rewards students. Business, psychology, and biology draw the most students, but CNU also has accredited engineering and music programs that surprise families expecting a purely liberal arts campus.
Nationally Known Program: President’s Leadership Program (PLP): A four-year program that combines the academic study of leadership with service learning and personal development. It’s CNU’s signature experience, and it’s also one of the two main paths to merit scholarship money.
Luter School of Business: AACSB-accredited, and business administration was the most popular intended major for Fall 2025 freshmen.
Computer and Electrical Engineering: Both bachelor’s programs are ABET-accredited, alongside computer science. Canon Virginia has partnered with CNU on a leadership scholarship for students in these fields.
Pre-Med Scholars: Top pre-med students get focused advising, clinical exposure, and access to early admission agreements with medical schools, plus the Riverside Medical Group Scholars program with Riverside Health physicians.
Teacher Preparation: A five-year path that ends with a Master of Arts in Teaching.
Music and the Arts: CNU is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, and students perform at the Ferguson Center for the Arts on campus.
Popular Undergraduate Pathways: Psychology, biology, criminology, kinesiology, finance, and marketing all rank among the top choices for incoming freshmen.
🔗 Official Christopher Newport University Links
CNU is in the middle of redesigning its website, and some older pages are still live with slightly different details. Use the official pages below to confirm deadlines, award amounts, and costs before your student commits.
Christopher Newport rewards the student who shows up. There’s no automatic scholarship ladder for Virginia residents and no big full-tuition prize, but a student with a real leadership or academic story can turn an essay and a 30-minute conversation into a renewable PLP or Honors award. For a Virginia family paying about $31,000 a year in direct costs, that money plus on-time FAFSA filing can make a close-knit, residential campus surprisingly competitive with the bigger state schools.
Out-of-state families should run the numbers carefully. Direct costs are about $45,000 a year, and the $3,000 incentive award only covers a slice of the gap. Either way, the playbook is the same: schedule the interview early, hit December 15, file the FAFSA by March 1, and read every name on the award letter before you count it as extra.
