📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

Trinity’s published cost of attendance for 2026-2027 is $77,846 for a student living on campus. The average family pays about $23,650 after grants and scholarships. That is roughly a third of sticker. If Trinity got crossed off your list on price alone, it deserves a second look before you decide.

Trinity states on its own cost page that direct costs have risen an average of 4.0% per year over the last five years. Trinity also fixes your scholarship at the dollar amount awarded, for up to eight semesters. Put those two facts together and a $30,000 award that covers 40% of the bill freshman year covers noticeably less by senior year. When you build your four-year budget, hold the scholarship flat and grow the cost. That is the honest version of the math.

📅 Trinity’s Two-Deadline Calendar (Simple Version)

• November 1: Early Decision I and Early Action. This is the only door to the full-tuition awards. Also the Trinity application deadline for Semmes consideration.
• November 8: Separate Semmes Scholars application, if your student is going the STEM full-tuition route.
• February 1: Early Decision II and Regular Decision. Automatic merit is still fully in play. The full-tuition awards are not.
• January 15: FAFSA priority date. The CSS Profile is required alongside it.
• April 1: Transfer application for fall enrollment (November 1 for spring).

Parent rule of thumb: if there is any chance your student is a top-of-the-pool candidate, treat November 1 as the deadline and stop thinking about February. February 1 costs nothing in merit, but it closes off roughly $29,000 a year in upside.

Trinity does not use the GPA printed on the transcript. It rebuilds it from five subject areas only: English, math, science, social science, and foreign language, stripped of weighting and put on a plain 4.0 scale. Electives, PE, and the bump from AP or IB weighting all fall out of the calculation. This helps students at schools that do not weight, and it means a 4.3 weighted GPA can land lower than a family expects. Course rigor still counts, but separately.

Trinity states that students who compete at Trinity Tower Scholars Day and do not win still qualify for the Murchison Scholarship. There is no downside to accepting the invitation. If your student gets the email, go.

How do we get invited to Trinity Tower Scholars Day?
You do not apply. Trinity invites students in the top portion of the applicant pool, drawn largely from Murchison-level admits. The one thing entirely in your control is applying Early Decision I or Early Action by November 1. Miss that and there is no invitation to receive.

How many full-tuition awards are there, really?
Up to 20 Trinity Tower Scholars a year, and just two or three Semmes Scholars. Against a first-year class of several hundred, that is a genuinely small number. Plan on the $18,000 to $30,000 automatic tier as the realistic outcome and treat full tuition as upside.

What is different about the Semmes track?
Semmes is the STEM path and it has an extra step. Apply to Trinity by November 1, then submit a separate Semmes application with an expanded resume by November 8. Finalists are invited to campus to interview on February 6, 2027. Eligible majors are biology, biochemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering science, geosciences, mathematics, neuroscience, physics and astronomy, and psychology. The award adds a $5,000 stipend for research, travel, materials, and supplies.

Does family income factor into these?
No. Trinity states that recipients of both Tower and Semmes are selected without regard to income. These are academic and research promise, full stop.

What GPA do we need to keep them?
Both require satisfactory academic progress and at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, reviewed at the end of each academic year, with full-time enrollment every semester. Renewable up to eight semesters, fall and spring only.

Is Trinity worth it for a National Merit Finalist?
It is a solid stacking play rather than a headline package. Trinity gives Finalists who name it first choice through NMSC a $2,000 annual award, and states that those recipients may also be considered for a second $2,000 National Merit Corporate Trinity Scholarship. Layered on a $30,000 Murchison, that is meaningful money, but Trinity does not run a full-ride National Merit package the way some public universities do.

How should our student prepare for an in-person competition?

🧠 Parent Strategy: Trinity Has a Scholarship Search Tool and Almost Nobody Uses It

Trinity publishes a searchable directory of 58 scholarships that you can filter by aid type and by area of interest. Most families read the eight featured awards on the main page and stop. The awards below the fold are where the overlooked money is.

1. Open Trinity’s scholarship directory and filter by your student’s intended area of interest.
2. Filter again by Community & Service. This is where the local San Antonio awards hide.
3. Write down anything that needs a separate step, an audition, a portfolio, or a nomination, and put it on a calendar now.
4. Email Student Financial Services about anything without a posted deadline. Several of these awards have no published date.

Parent translation: automatic merit arrives whether you do anything or not. Everything on this list requires you to notice it exists.

Trinity funds several awards that are effectively local-only: a need-based award for Bexar County high school seniors, a $2,500 award routed through San Antonio-area high school nominations, and a $2,000 award tied to winning the Alamo regional science and engineering fair. None of these are advertised to a national audience. If your student is local, the counseling office at their high school may be the actual gatekeeper, not Trinity.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Which of these actually stack with automatic merit?
The talent awards are the reliable ones. Trinity states that music scholarships, including departmental awards, are offered in addition to the university’s academic and financial aid awards. The Baker Duncan theatre, art, and debate awards work the same way in practice, though we would still confirm it in writing on your award letter. The full-tuition Tuition Exchange awards are the opposite: they replace all other Trinity institutional aid.

My student is not a music major. Can they still get a music scholarship?
Yes, and this is one of the most overlooked opportunities at Trinity. The award is based on musical ability alone, regardless of major, and covers voice, composition, and a range of instruments from $1,500 to $10,000 a year. A student who played trumpet seriously in high school and plans to major in business can audition and collect. The trade is that you have to keep playing in a Trinity ensemble.

What does a Baker Duncan award require?
An audition or a portfolio, depending on the discipline, plus ongoing participation. Theatre awards go up to $10,000 a year for students interested in performance, directing, design, theatre management, or theatre scholarship, and renewal is tied to staying involved in mainstage productions. Art awards go up to $10,000 for students pursuing a studio art major, judged on portfolio. Debate awards go up to $10,000 for students who join and stay active in Trinity’s debate program. All three are competitive and renewable.

Several of these have no deadline listed. What do we do?
Call. Trinity’s directory shows amounts and descriptions but leaves timing off a number of entries. Student Financial Services is at 210-999-8898 and Northrup Hall. For anything audition or portfolio based, the department itself sets the calendar, so contact the music, theatre, art, or human communication department directly and ask for their dates.

What is Tuition Exchange and would we qualify?
If a parent works at a participating college or university, a dependent child can be considered for a full-tuition scholarship at Trinity. Trinity runs three versions: the general Tuition Exchange program, a track for Associated Colleges of the South member schools, and a dedicated arrangement with Rice University. All are limited by space availability, and the nomination goes through your employer, not through Trinity. Start with your HR office in the summer before senior year. Recipients keep the award for up to eight semesters with at least a 2.0 GPA, but are not eligible for other Trinity institutional scholarships.

Is there anything here for military families?
Yes, and it is the largest award on this list. Veterans and dependents with Yellow Ribbon status receive a full-tuition scholarship, with the VA covering half and Trinity matching the other half. It does not depend on GPA or test scores. Establish eligibility with the VA first, then work with the certifying official in Student Financial Services.

Can current Trinity students apply for these?
Some, yes. Trinity’s directory includes a number of departmental and endowed awards aimed at sophomores through seniors in specific majors, from geosciences to religion to sociology. If your student is already enrolled, it is worth filtering the directory again each spring rather than assuming the money was all decided at admission.

There is no separate honors college, no honors application, and no honors dorm. The things an honors college exists to provide at a large university are simply the default here.

• Trinity Tower Scholars: The closest thing to an honors cohort. Up to 20 students a year, selected in person at Trinity Tower Scholars Day, receiving full tuition. Requires an Early Decision I or Early Action application by November 1.
• Semmes Distinguished Scholars in Science: Two or three STEM students a year, full tuition plus a $5,000 research and travel stipend, with a named program director and a finalist event on campus.
• Undergraduate research: Trinity’s D.R. Semmes School of Science is built around it, and students work in labs at a stage when they would still be waiting their turn at a research university.
• Study abroad: Roughly half of Trinity students study abroad, across more than 35 countries. No honors designation required.
• Departmental awards: Trinity’s scholarship directory carries a long list of endowed departmental awards for sophomores through seniors, in everything from geosciences to religion to sociology.
