🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Saint Peter’s University (Read This First)
The merit award is locked at admission. Saint Peter’s says scholarship decisions are final once made. If your student’s GPA sits near a band edge (3.0, 3.25, 3.5), get senior-year grades to admissions before the decision comes out.
Test scores don’t change the merit tier. The freshman grid runs on GPA only. Scores matter for the Honors Program invitation, nursing and 5-year programs, and the top international awards, not for the main grid.
Named awards don’t stack, but add-ons do. Your student gets one grid award (Arrupe through Academic Excellence). The Legacy and Jesuit/Catholic add-ons sit on top of it. Total gift aid can’t exceed your direct cost.
Gateway’s real gate is Pell. The headline says family income of $100,000 or less, but the fine print requires eligibility for both a Pell Grant and NJ TAG. Plenty of families under $100,000 won’t qualify.

How do you apply for the Presidential Scholarship?
You don’t apply separately. Every admitted freshman is considered, and the admissions committee picks a small group from the top of the pool. If Saint Peter’s asks for more information, such as test scores or an extra essay, respond quickly.
Can a test-optional student win the Presidential?
Yes. Saint Peter’s says test-optional applicants are still considered, but the Presidential gets an additional holistic review, and more documents may be requested.
Is there a deadline for the Presidential?
No date is published. Because winners are picked from the admitted pool on a rolling basis, applying early in senior year is the safest bet.
What is APEX and who should look at it?

🧠 Parent Strategy: At Saint Peter’s, the Paperwork Is the Scholarship
The biggest money at Saint Peter’s beyond merit (Gateway, EOF, TAG, and donor scholarships) doesn’t come from essays. It comes from getting the financial aid steps right, on time, every year.
File the FAFSA early (Saint Peter’s code 002638).
Answer New Jersey’s HESAA follow-up questions. If you leave a field blank, TAG stalls, and Gateway depends on TAG.
If your family is lower income, submit the EOF interest form right after acceptance and book the interview.
Email financial aid and ask whether any endowed or annual donor fund matches your student’s major, hometown, or background.
Parent translation: miss the FAFSA or the HESAA items and your student still keeps merit, but can lose thousands in state aid and Gateway eligibility.

What is EOF and is it worth the summer program?
EOF is New Jersey’s Educational Opportunity Fund for students from lower-income and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. At Saint Peter’s it adds a state grant (listed at about $2,600 a year), tutoring, advising, and a free summer program in August. The summer program is required, and it also earns 3 college credits.
Can transfer students get EOF?
Yes. Transfers can submit the EOF interest form after acceptance, and students who were in EOF at their last college get priority.
How do endowed scholarships work if there’s no application?
Saint Peter’s awards more than 100 endowed scholarships a year, and financial aid matches students to donor criteria. Filing the FAFSA on time and asking financial aid directly is the best way to get on the radar.
My daughter volunteers with GlamourGals. Does that matter?
It can. Saint Peter’s will review GlamourGals volunteers with a 4.0 or higher GPA for a full-tuition Presidential Scholarship. Make the GlamourGals involvement obvious on the application. It’s a review, not a guarantee.
Can my student use Saint Peter’s money to study abroad?
Not institutional scholarships (ISEP exchange is the exception). AIFS programs come with an automatic $400 semester or $200 summer grant, and the Center for Global Learning runs two $500 scholarships.
Saint Peter’s has an Honors Program, not a separate honors college. It’s a community of 200+ students who take smaller, discussion-heavy classes and finish with a senior thesis. The good news: there’s no separate application. Saint Peter’s automatically reviews every freshman applicant and invites the ones who fit.
Typical invite: GPA of 3.5 or higher with rigorous classes, plus a competitive SAT or ACT score

The One Place Test Scores Matter
Saint Peter’s merit grid ignores test scores, but the Honors invitation doesn’t. If your student is honors-caliber and has a solid SAT or ACT, send it. Saint Peter’s notes it may still invite students with lower scores who show academic excellence in other ways.

Does my student need to apply to the Honors Program?
No. Saint Peter’s automatically reviews all freshman applicants and sends invitations. Students can also decline the invitation and still enroll.
Do I need SAT or ACT scores for Honors?
Saint Peter’s lists a competitive test score as part of the invite criteria, so submitting one helps. Students below the minimum can still be invited based on other academic strengths.
Can my student join Honors after freshman year?
Yes. With 15 or more credits and a 3.5 cumulative GPA at Saint Peter’s, students can apply for delayed entry. Any student with a 3.5 can also take individual honors classes as an “Honors Associate.”
Does Honors come with extra scholarship money?
Not that Saint Peter’s publishes. The value is smaller classes, priority registration, dedicated advising, and a senior thesis that helps with grad school applications.
What GPA do honors students need to keep?
A 3.5. Students who dip below get a one-semester grace period to get back on track.
Saint Peter’s is a small Jesuit university in Jersey City built around career-ready majors and personal attention. Its location does a lot of the heavy lifting: New York City is right across the river, so internships in finance, healthcare, tech, and media are a train ride away instead of a plane ride. U.S. News named it the top school in New Jersey for social mobility among Regional Universities North in 2025, which tells you it is good at moving first-generation and working-class students into solid careers.
Nationally Known Program: Data Science and Computer Science: Saint Peter’s says it was the first college in New Jersey to offer computer science as an undergraduate major, back in 1977. Today its Data Science Institute offers a bachelor’s in data science (added in 2022) alongside master’s programs in data science, business analytics, and cybersecurity. Students can finish a bachelor’s and master’s in five years through accelerated pathways.
Business (Frank J. Guarini School of Business): Accounting, finance, management, marketing, and international business, with IACBE accreditation for its business degrees and easy access to Jersey City and Manhattan employers.
Nursing: A BSN through the School of Nursing & Health Professions. Freshmen enter a selective pre-nursing year and need a 3.0 and strong entrance-test results to move on. Students who aren’t admitted to pre-nursing as freshmen can’t transfer in later, so choose it on day one.
Criminal Justice: A popular major with a graduate path into the MA in Criminal Justice.
Education (Caulfield School of Education): Teacher certification programs for elementary and secondary schools, plus accelerated paths into a master’s.
Accelerated degrees: Multiple 5-year bachelor’s-plus-master’s programs, plus the APEX track for students who start college with an associate degree.

Here’s the big picture on Saint Peter’s. It’s one of the few private universities where the sticker price is almost beside the point. Every admitted freshman gets at least $20,000 a year, GPA alone decides how much, and the award shows up with the acceptance letter. For New Jersey families who qualify for a Pell Grant, Gateway can take tuition to zero, and EOF adds a grant plus real academic support.
The catch is timing and paperwork, not essays. Get your student’s best transcript in before the decision, because the merit award is final once it’s made.
