Purdue Fort Wayne is the Purdue University campus in northeast Indiana, and the diploma your student walks away with is a Purdue degree. PFW admits most students who apply. It looks for a 2.3 or higher GPA and a Core 40 diploma or similar college-prep track, and test scores are optional (though strongly encouraged for engineering). Getting in is rarely the hard part here. The real planning happens on the money side, where a handful of dates and one campus quirk decide what your family actually pays.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Purdue Fort Wayne (Read This First)

  • The deposit date locks in the scholarship. The automatic Purdue Fort Wayne Scholarship requires the enrollment deposit by June 1 and final transcripts by August 1 for fall entry. One table on PFW’s scholarship page shows August 18 for both, but the admissions page and the scholarship rules say June 1. Plan around the earlier dates.
  • Senior-year grades count. The award tier is set by the GPA on the final high school transcript, the one with the graduation date on it. A rough spring semester can drop your student a full tier.
  • Nursing is not a PFW major. Nursing, dental, and medical imaging programs on the Fort Wayne campus belong to Indiana University Fort Wayne, a separate school that shares the grounds. Apply to the wrong one and none of PFW’s scholarships apply.
  • 21st Century Scholars, read the fine print. If another award already pays tuition, the PFW Scholarship moves over to eligible fees, and it can shrink if there are no fees left to cover.
  • The full-ride deadline is earlier than it looks. The Summit Scholars page says apply by January 6, but PFW’s business school page still lists December 1 for both the application and the FAFSA. Filing both by December 1 covers every date PFW has published.

What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 22; SAT: 1060.

Average net price? About $13,150/year after aid.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Purdue University Fort Wayne: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in September 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Purdue University Fort Wayne has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $500 to $1,100 more than the in-state total below. $700 to $1,900 more than the out-of-state total below.

In-State: billed cost per year
$22,640
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $9,532
Housing & meals (typical) $13,108
Total billed cost $22,640
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$37,389
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $24,281
Housing & meals (typical) $13,108
Total billed cost $37,389

That is $14,749 more per year than Indiana residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.

Average federal net price: $13,150 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.

📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options

Ohio Reciprocity: Students from 14 Ohio counties (Allen, Auglaize, Butler, Darke, Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Mercer, Paulding, Preble, Putnam, Shelby, Van Wert, and Williams) pay the full Indiana resident rate.

MSEP and Contiguous States: Students from Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wisconsin pay 150% of in-state tuition, roughly $10,000 a year below the standard nonresident rate.

None of the three programs requires an application. If your student qualifies, the reduced rate is applied automatically.

Out of State? Check Which Rate You Actually Pay

The table above shows two columns, but PFW actually charges three different rates to U.S. students. Where you live decides which one you get, and none of the discounts require an application.

Rate Who Qualifies Tuition & Fees With Housing & Food
Indiana Resident / Ohio Reciprocity Indiana, plus 14 Ohio counties $9,532 $22,640
MSEP / Contiguous States IL, MI, OH, KY, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, WI $14,298 $27,406
Nonresident All other U.S. states $24,281 $37,389

PFW’s published 2026-2027 rates for full-time students. Housing and food use PFW’s on-campus estimate of $13,108, and PFW notes the food portion is still a preliminary figure.

💡 The “Take 15” Rule

PFW uses banded tuition, which means 12 credits and 18 credits cost exactly the same each semester. That matters more than it sounds. The PFW Scholarship only renews if your student earns 24 PFW credits a year, and Indiana’s state grants pay the most to students who finish 30 credits a year. Fifteen credits a semester hits both targets without adding a dollar to the tuition bill. One catch: summer classes are billed per credit, so banded pricing does not help there.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at Purdue Fort Wayne

Do Ohio students pay in-state tuition at Purdue Fort Wayne?
Students from 14 Ohio counties do: Allen, Auglaize, Butler, Darke, Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Mercer, Paulding, Preble, Putnam, Shelby, Van Wert, and Williams. They pay the full Indiana resident rate through the Ohio Reciprocity Program. The rest of Ohio still qualifies for the MSEP and contiguous-state rate, which is 150% of in-state tuition.

Is Purdue Fort Wayne part of the Midwest Student Exchange Program?
Yes. Students from Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and Wisconsin pay 150% of in-state tuition instead of the full nonresident rate. There is no separate application. If your student is eligible, the discount shows up automatically.

Do Michigan, Illinois, and Kentucky students get a discount?
Yes. As states bordering Indiana, they fall under PFW’s Contiguous States Program, which is the same 150% rate. For 2026-2027 that works out to about $14,298 in tuition and fees instead of $24,281.

What is not included in the tuition figure?
Course-specific charges such as lab fees, program differentials, and course materials are billed separately. PFW also budgets about $3,180 a year for books and supplies, $1,586 for transportation, and $2,430 for personal expenses. Those do not show up on the bill, but they are real money.

What kind of housing does the cost estimate assume?
PFW’s student housing is apartment-style, and the published estimate is based on an on-campus apartment. There are several floor plans at different prices, so your actual cost can land above or below the estimate.

Does tuition stay the same all four years?
No. PFW sets rates each year, so plan for modest increases. The automatic PFW Scholarship stays at a fixed dollar amount as long as your student meets the renewal rules, so it covers a slightly smaller share each year.

📅 PFW Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)

  • December 1: File the PFW application and FAFSA if your student is aiming for a Summit Scholars full ride.
  • January 6 and 15: PFW application, then the invitation-only Summit Scholars application.
  • Late February: Virtual Summit Scholars competition.
  • April 15: FAFSA deadline for Indiana state aid, including the Frank O’Bannon Grant and 21st Century Scholarship.
  • June 1: Enrollment deposit. This is what secures the automatic PFW Scholarship.
  • August 1: Final transcripts in. The GPA on this transcript sets the award.

Parent rule of thumb: PFW admits on a rolling basis, but the money does not wait. Treat June 1 as a hard stop, even if your student is still comparing offers.

Data last verified Jun 5, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Note: The award is split evenly between fall and spring and is never paid in summer. Spring admits receive half the annual amount for their first term, then the full amount after that.

Automatic Merit FAQs (Purdue Fort Wayne)

Should my student apply through the Common App or directly?
Purdue Fort Wayne accepts both, and neither one requires a personal essay or a letter of recommendation. Apply directly at pfw.edu, though. PFW runs fee-waiver promotions, including one during Indiana’s College GO! Week in late September, and those waivers apply only to applications submitted through PFW’s own site. Common App submissions are excluded, so the convenience costs you the $30 application fee. If your student is chasing a Summit Scholars invitation, applying directly also keeps everything in the PFW admissions checklist, which is where the Summit invitation link shows up.

Does my student need test scores for the Purdue Fort Wayne Scholarship?
PFW’s published award grid uses GPA only. PFW’s application page, however, says test scores help determine eligibility and calculate the award. If your student has a solid ACT or SAT, send it. It costs nothing to include, and the Summit Scholars and Honors Program benchmarks use test scores anyway.

Which GPA does PFW use?
The cumulative GPA on the official final high school transcript, the one showing the graduation date. That means senior-year grades still count. A student sitting at 3.52 in the fall can land in the lower tier after a rough spring. For transfer students, PFW uses the GPA from the most recent college attended.

Why do out-of-state students get larger awards?
Because they pay more in tuition, so the award is sized to match. Ohio Reciprocity students are treated as in-state for scholarship purposes. MSEP, contiguous-state, and international students fall into the out-of-state column.

How does the scholarship renew?
Your student must stay full time every semester, earn 24 PFW credits each academic year, stay in good academic standing, and be working toward a first bachelor’s degree. Dropping below full time for a semester removes that semester’s award.

We have a 21st Century Scholar. Does the PFW Scholarship still help?
Sometimes less than you would expect. The 21st Century Scholarship can pay full tuition, and when that happens, PFW shifts its own scholarship to eligible fees instead. If there are not enough eligible fees to cover, the PFW award can be reduced. Ask the Office of Financial Aid for a line-by-line breakdown before you count on the full amount.

What happened to Don Dollars?
That program expired in summer 2025, and the international PFW Scholarship Plus ended in summer 2026. Older guides still list both, but neither is available going forward.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

Purdue Fort Wayne’s big awards all run through one door: the Summit Scholars competition. Every invited student competes for the Chapman Scholarship (six per year, any major). Students majoring in business, hospitality management, or leadership and talent development are also considered for the Doermer Distinguished Scholarship (one per year). Both are true full rides: tuition and fees up to 18 credits a semester, on-campus housing, textbooks, and a food stipend for four years.

Who Gets Invited

A current high school senior on a Core 40 or college-prep track needs to meet one of these:

  • A 3.95 GPA together with a top-10% class rank
  • An SAT of 1380 or higher
  • An ACT of 29 or higher

Read that first line carefully. The GPA route needs the class rank as well. If your student’s high school does not rank, the test-score route is the cleaner path in.

📊 The Honest Odds

PFW received 80 applications in 2025 and 70 in 2024 for seven awards. That works out to roughly one winner for every eleven applicants, and every one of those applicants already cleared the academic bar. Grades get your student invited. What separates winners is leadership, genuine community service, and how well they come across in the interview.

Stacking & Combining
As PFW's most prestigious business scholarship, this award generally replaces other institutional aid rather than stacking. Note that if a candidate wins both Chapman and Doermer, they may only accept one. Recipients must maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA and reside in on-campus housing to keep the award.

📄
How to Apply
Step 1: Apply to PFW by January 6 (December 1 is safer) and declare a business, hospitality management, or leadership and talent development major. Step 2: If invited, submit the Summit Scholars application by January 15. Step 3: Compete in the virtual Summit Scholars competition in late February; eligible majors are considered for Doermer and Chapman at the same time. Step 4: The Doermer Scholar is notified about a month later.
Selection criteria: Holistic review with emphasis on academic excellence, business leadership potential, application quality, essay strength, and interview performance.

Renewal requires full-time enrollment, a 3.5 cumulative GPA, meeting program expectations, and living on campus.

❓ Summit Scholars FAQs

When are the Summit Scholars deadlines?
The Summit page lists January 6 for the PFW application and January 15 for the invitation-only Summit application. The Doermer School of Business page, however, still lists December 1 for both the PFW application and the FAFSA. PFW’s pages disagree, so file both by December 1 and your student is covered no matter which date turns out to be enforced.

Does my student have to travel to Fort Wayne for the competition?
No. The competition is virtual and held on a Saturday in late February. Students interview, meet faculty from their intended major, and families can join an information session. PFW recommends business casual or business formal attire, even on camera.

Which majors can compete for the Doermer Scholarship?
Business, hospitality management, and leadership and talent development. Older PFW pages still say business only, but the current Summit Scholars page includes all three. Doermer Scholars also get a faculty mentor, a mentor from the local business community, and an all-expenses-paid international business trip course.

What if my student wins both Chapman and Doermer?
They can accept only one. The packages are the same size, so the choice comes down to the program: Chapman centers on civic engagement, and Doermer centers on business mentoring and networking.

Can my student keep the automatic PFW Scholarship too?
Plan on no. A full ride already covers tuition and fees, and PFW’s rule is that its scholarship shifts to eligible fees when tuition is covered by other aid. With nothing left to cover, it is effectively absorbed. Confirm the details with financial aid once the offer arrives.

What does it take to keep the scholarship?
Full-time enrollment every fall and spring, a 3.5 cumulative GPA, meeting program expectations, and living in on-campus housing. That housing rule means commuting from home is not an option for Summit Scholars.

What should my student prepare?
The Summit application includes an essay, and the competition centers on an interview. Our Essay Toolkit and Brag Sheet Builder help organize leadership and service stories before interview day.

🧠 Parent Strategy: ScholarshipUniverse Hides PFW’s Own Money

PFW’s department and donor scholarships live in ScholarshipUniverse, and admitted students can log in before they ever set foot on campus. The portal has a few quirks that trip families up:

  1. It opens on outside scholarships. Click filter and choose “School Scholarships First” to see PFW awards.
  2. Each application can be submitted only once, with no edits afterward. Save drafts and submit when they are final.
  3. It works in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, but not Safari.
  4. PFW posts new awards throughout the year, so check back at least once a month.

Parent translation: the automatic scholarship finds your student. Everything in this section, your student has to go find.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These awards mostly go to students once they have declared a major, so think of them as money for years two through four. Some are packaged in place of part of the automatic PFW Scholarship rather than on top of it, so always read the award letter to see how they fit together.

Local Money Worth Knowing About
  • Questa Education Foundation: low-interest loans that can be up to 75% forgiven for students from Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Whitley, Wabash, and Wells counties.
  • Community foundations: nearly every Indiana county has one, and PFW lists them by county on its financial aid page, along with several in western Ohio. These awards are small but have far less competition than national scholarships.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Who can get the Business Education Fund Scholarship?
Accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing majors taking at least 6 credits who live in Allen, Adams, DeKalb, Huntington, Noble, Wells, or Whitley County. The business school also offers a Merit Scholarship for full-time economics, finance, management, and marketing majors with a 3.0 GPA, plus named awards for economics majors with need and for junior and senior business majors.

Do department scholarships stack with the PFW Scholarship?
Not always. Some donor awards in business and engineering are used to fund part of the PFW Scholarship line rather than add a new line on top. The award letter shows which way it went. If the total did not go up, that is why.

What happens if my student wins an outside scholarship?
Report it to PFW. If total aid ends up $300 or more above what your student needs, PFW is required to reduce something, and the school decides what gets cut. Asking early gives you a chance to request that loans get reduced before grants do.

Are there scholarships for engineering and computer science students?
Yes. The College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science has donor scholarships, including a BAE Systems award, and it lists a long set of outside industry scholarships on its scholarship page. Most go to continuing students with solid grades.

Is there anything for liberal arts majors?
The College of Liberal Arts runs departmental awards, and one student each year receives the Thomas A. Herr Scholarship, which covers tuition, room, and board for a spring semester studying in Athens, Greece.

The H-Option: Honors Without Extra Classes

An H-Option is an agreement between your student and the instructor of a regular course. The instructor adjusts the assignments, and your student earns honors credit for a class they already needed to take. Many honors sections also count toward general education. The end result is that honors fits inside a normal degree plan instead of stacking extra courses on top of it.

Honors Program FAQs (Purdue Fort Wayne)

Does the Honors Program come with a scholarship?
Not an automatic one. What it offers is access to honors experiential awards, typically up to about $1,000, for research, conference travel, internships, and study abroad. These pay for experiences rather than tuition, and they do not affect the automatic PFW Scholarship.

My student does not have a 27 ACT. Is honors off the table?
No. There is a second way in. After completing 12 credits at PFW with a 3.3 GPA, any student can apply. Plenty of strong students join in their second semester or sophomore year.

Is the Honors Program the same as graduating with honors in a major?
No. Departmental honors is a distinction noted on the diploma for a specific major. The Honors Program is a separate, university-wide certificate that adds an honors notation to the transcript, along with an Honors Medal at graduation.

Does my student have to take a set number of honors credits each semester?
No. There is no per-semester minimum. The goal is simply 18 honors credits by graduation, and PFW recommends spreading them out.

What counts as an honors project?
It is flexible. Many students extend a senior capstone or thesis their major already requires, or build on work started in an H-Option course.

⭐ College Specialty

Purdue Fort Wayne is a hands-on regional university with more than 200 programs across six colleges, and every graduate earns a Purdue degree. It is especially strong in fields tied to northeast Indiana’s employers: engineering, computer science, and business. It also has a music program with a genuinely unusual twist.

Heads Up: Two Universities, One Campus
Until 2018, this campus was a joint Indiana University and Purdue school called IPFW. When it split, Purdue kept most programs, but nursing, dental education, medical imaging, medicine, and social work moved to Indiana University Fort Wayne, which still operates on the same grounds. If your student wants one of those programs, they apply to IU Fort Wayne, and the PFW scholarships on this page do not apply. PFW does offer pre-health advising for students heading to medical, dental, or other professional schools after a bachelor’s degree, as well as a Human Services degree.
Nationally Unusual Program:
Music Therapy and Music Industry: PFW offers a bachelor’s in music therapy and the only Master of Music Therapy in northern Indiana. Students train in an on-campus Music Therapy Clinic with four treatment rooms. The popular music and music industry programs are based in the Sweetwater Music Center, which has a recording studio and editing suites and is tied to Sweetwater, the music retailer headquartered in Fort Wayne.
  • Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science: The largest pipeline into regional manufacturing, defense, and tech employers. PFW strongly encourages test scores for engineering applicants.
  • Doermer School of Business: Accounting, finance, management, marketing, and hospitality management, with strong ties to the Fort Wayne business community through mentoring and the Business Advisory Council.
  • Summit Scholars outcomes: PFW reports that about 90% of its Summit Scholars complete internships and all of them move on to jobs or graduate school.
  • Visual and Performing Arts: Art, design, music, and theatre, with close ties to the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Purdue Fort Wayne is a Purdue degree at a regional price, and for a lot of Midwest families that is the whole pitch. Indiana students pay one of the lower sticker prices in the Purdue system. Families from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, and the other MSEP states can knock about $10,000 a year off the out-of-state bill without filling out a single form. The automatic scholarship is modest, but it only asks for a GPA and a deposit on time.

For the top of the class, the Summit Scholars competition puts seven genuine full rides on the table every year, judged on who your student is as much as their numbers. And if your student is set on nursing or another health career, do the most important thing on this page first: make sure you are applying to the right university.

The families who get the most out of PFW do three simple things. They file early, they pay the deposit by June 1, and they keep checking ScholarshipUniverse long after move-in day.
