UNI is a mid-sized public university in Cedar Falls with about 9,400 students, and it admits most of the students who apply. It started in 1876 as the school that trained Iowa’s teachers, and it still turns out more teachers than any college in the state. It also bills itself as Iowa’s most affordable four-year public university. For families in six neighboring states, that low price now applies to them too.
One application unlocks almost all the extra money. Beyond the automatic awards, nearly every UNI scholarship runs through the UNI Scholarship Application. It opens July 1, the priority date is January 15, and your student has to be admitted before they can even open it.
Get admitted by May 1. Automatic awards give priority to students admitted by that date. Earlier is better, because admission also opens the door to the January 15 scholarship application.
Neighbor students pay Iowa tuition, with a catch. Students from Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin pay the Iowa rate. Their extra Neighbor Award only renews if they stay out-of-state residents for tuition purposes.
Budget for supplemental tuition. Nursing majors (once admitted to the program) and business juniors and seniors pay about $2,058 more per year. It does not show up in the headline cost numbers.
Test-optional students still get merit money. They are reviewed holistically and can send a higher score after admission. UNI does not publish a superscore policy for scholarships, so plan around your best single test date.
“Legacy Scholars” is not a legacy scholarship. It is a grad-school prep program for Pell-eligible and first-gen juniors. The money for families with UNI grads is the separate Out-of-State Legacy Scholar Award.
FAQ
Is this college test-optional? Yes, for admission. University of Northern Iowa is test-optional for admission.
What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 19-25; SAT: 1080-1220.
Average net price? About $14,609/year after aid.
Does this school use waivers/reciprocity?
Yes. It participates in Neighboring State Rate (IL, MN, MO, NE, SD, WI).
💰 Cost of Attendance at University of Northern Iowa: 2026–2027 Rates
Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.
📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest University of Northern Iowa has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly
$400 to $1,100 more than the in-state total below.$700 to $1,700 more than the out-of-state total below.
In-State: billed cost per year
$21,151
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$10,505
Housing & meals (typical)
$10,646
Total billed cost
$21,151
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$33,675
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$23,029
Housing & meals (typical)
$10,646
Total billed cost
$33,675
That is $12,524 more per year than Iowa residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.
Average federal net price: $14,609 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.
📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options
New undergraduates from Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin (entering Fall 2025 or later) pay the same tuition as Iowa residents through UNI's Neighboring State Rate. Students from every other state pay nonresident tuition but automatically receive a $5,000-per-year UNI Advantage Award, renewable for up to four years.
Out-of-State Savings at UNI
UNI has two big levers for non-Iowa families. If you live in Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota or Wisconsin, your student pays the Iowa resident tuition rate, so read the in-state column above as your column. Everyone else pays nonresident tuition but automatically gets a $5,000-a-year UNI Advantage Award just for enrolling.
Two other numbers to keep in mind. Signing up for the two-year Live 2 Succeed housing plan knocks money off year two. Nursing and upper-level business students pay supplemental tuition on top of these figures.
FAQ: Cost of Attendance at the University of Northern Iowa
We live in Minnesota (or Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota or Wisconsin). Do we really pay Iowa tuition?
Yes. Undergraduates from those six states who entered Fall 2025 or later are charged the same tuition as Iowa residents. In 2026-27 that is $9,054 in tuition plus $1,451 in fees, instead of $21,578 in nonresident tuition. That is about $12,500 a year in savings before any scholarship.
Does the neighbor rate last all four years?
UNI’s registrar describes it as the rate charged to undergraduates who entered in Fall 2025 or later, not as a first-year discount. Two things are worth confirming each year: your residency classification, and your Neighbor Award. That award has its own rule and only renews if your student stays an out-of-state resident for tuition purposes.
We’re from a state farther away. How much does the $5,000 Advantage Award actually help?
It brings nonresident tuition from $21,578 down to about $16,578. That still leaves a gap of roughly $7,500 a year compared with an Iowa student. Academic merit of $1,000 to $2,000, a $2,000 legacy award if a parent, grandparent or sibling went to UNI, and departmental scholarships can shrink it further.
What is supplemental tuition, and who pays it?
It is an extra $1,029 per semester for full-time students, so about $2,058 a year. It applies to students admitted to and declared in the nursing program, and to juniors and seniors in the Wilson College of Business. Pre-nursing students and freshman and sophomore business majors do not pay it yet. Plan for it in years three and four.
Why are housing and meals the same for everyone?
Room and board does not depend on where you live. The $10,646 figure is a double room with the all-access meal plan. The easiest way to trim it is Live 2 Succeed: commit to two years on campus and get a $1,000 scholarship in year two. UNI’s pages list $500 for some non-Iowa students, so confirm your amount with University Housing.
What’s not included in the table?
Books, personal expenses and travel aren’t billed by UNI, so they’re left out of the direct-cost total. UNI’s own averages are about $800 for books and supplies, $1,920 for personal expenses and $818 for transportation to and from home. Families who live close by usually spend less on travel.
Is UNI really the cheapest public university in Iowa?
UNI describes itself as Iowa’s most affordable four-year public university, and its sticker price is low. What your family actually pays depends on grants and scholarships, so run UNI’s Net Price Calculator before you compare schools. It takes about 15 minutes and uses your real income numbers.
July 1: The UNI Scholarship Application opens. Your student has to be admitted first, so apply for admission early in senior fall.
January 15: Priority date for the scholarship application. If you’re going after Bright, Noel or Wilson Student Scholars, file the FAFSA before this date too.
By March 15: Presidential Scholarship winners are notified. Most other scholarship notices arrive around March.
April 1: The scholarship application closes for the year. Late applications only get leftover funds.
May 1: Be admitted by this date for priority consideration on automatic awards.
Parent rule of thumb: treat January 15 as the real deadline for everything, even though the automatic awards technically run to May 1.
Automatic Merit Scholarships: University of Northern Iowa
These awards come straight from the admission application. There is no separate form. UNI sorts students into three groups: Iowa residents (Panther Awards), neighboring states (Neighbor Awards) and everyone else (the $5,000 Advantage Award plus more). Students admitted by May 1 get priority, and test-optional applicants are still considered.

Automatic Merit FAQs (University of Northern Iowa)
How much are Panther Awards, and what scores do you need?
Iowa freshmen coming straight from high school get $1,000 to $4,000 a year based on GPA and/or ACT. UNI does not post the cutoffs, so you won’t know the exact amount until the admission letter. Strong grades in hard classes matter here as much as a test score.
We’re from Illinois. What automatic money is there for us?
First, your student pays Iowa tuition, which is the biggest discount. On top of that, Neighbor Awards add $1,000 to $2,000 a year based on academics. Neighboring-state students with financial need can also get the $1,000 Inspire Award.
What do students from other states get?
Every nonresident freshman paying nonresident tuition automatically gets the $5,000 Advantage Award. Strong students can get another $1,000 to $2,000 a year. A $2,000 Legacy Scholar Award is added if a parent, grandparent or sibling graduated from UNI, or a sibling is enrolled now.
What is the Inspire Award, and does it stack?
It’s $1,000 a year for freshmen with a 3.5+ high school GPA who show financial need on the FAFSA. It stacks on top of Panther, Neighbor or Advantage Awards. The FAFSA is the trigger, so file it early.
My student did CAPS or Waterloo CTE Pathways. Is there money for that?
Yes, $250 a year for four years ($1,000 total) on top of everything else. Check the “CAPS completer” or “CTE Pathways completer” box on the UNI Scholarship Application by January 15. CAPS counts from any CAPS program nationally for out-of-state students. CTE Pathways is specific to Waterloo, Iowa.
We applied test-optional. Did we give up merit money?
No. UNI reviews test-optional applicants holistically for the same automatic awards. If your student later gets a score that shows their ability better, they can send it after admission and be reconsidered.
What do transfer students get automatically?
The Transfer Scholars Award is $1,000 for the first year with a 3.25+ college GPA and full-time, on-campus enrollment. Pell-eligible students who keep a 3.0 can then get the $1,000 Transfer Success Award in year two. TRIO participants can add a $1,000-a-year Inspire Award. Nonresident transfers also get a $5,000 Advantage Award.
UNI’s biggest competitive awards are built for Iowa students with financial need, not for top test scores alone. The Bright Scholars of Iowa award can cover the entire cost of attendance. The Benjamin J. Allen award covers Iowa tuition for future teachers. UNI’s top merit-only award, the Presidential Scholarship, runs through the Honors Program, and you’ll find it in the Honors section below.

Automatic admission awards
Yes
Panther, Neighbor or Advantage Awards form the base. Inspire, Legacy, CAPS and CTE all add on top.
Presidential Scholarship
Yes
$4,000 a year on top of automatic awards. UNI says a typical package lands around $30,000 over four years.
Departmental awards (Scholarship Application)
Usually
These are designed to sit on top of the automatic awards. Music, art, STEM and college-level awards live here.
Bright, Noel, Wilson Student Scholars
Last-dollar
Every other grant and scholarship is applied first, then these fill the rest of the gap. Other awards don’t add on top. They just shrink how much these pay.
Outside scholarships
Must report
You have to report them in MyUNIverse. UNI says loans are the first thing adjusted when outside money comes in.
Here’s what “last-dollar” means in real life. Say the cost of attendance is $27,000 and your student already has $12,000 in Pell, state grants and UNI scholarships. Bright Scholars covers the other $15,000. If your student wins another $1,000 scholarship, Bright drops to $14,000. Your out-of-pocket stays at zero either way. It’s still a great deal. Just don’t count those other awards as extra money.

❓ Competitive Scholarship FAQs
Who can win Bright Scholars of Iowa?
Seniors at an Iowa high school who show financial need on the FAFSA and meet any one of these: top 10% of the class, a Regents Admission Index of 299+, a 28+ ACT or a 3.7+ GPA. Priority goes to students whose parents don’t have a four-year degree. Winners agree to stay in touch with the Bright Foundation and attend a fall reception and a spring symposium each year.
What does the Bright application involve?
Complete the UNI Scholarship Application by January 15 and upload an essay (two pages max) about succeeding in the face of adversity, plus a summary of service and leadership. File the FAFSA before January 15. It renews for three more years with a 2.5 GPA and full-time enrollment.
What is the Benjamin J. Allen Teacher Education award?
It pays an amount equal to Iowa resident tuition each year for Iowa residents with a 3.75+ GPA who plan a College of Education major. Apply through the UNI Scholarship Application by January 15. UNI doesn’t publish renewal terms, so read the offer letter closely.
Can out-of-state students win these?
Not these two. Both require Iowa residency or an Iowa high school. Out-of-state students should focus on the Presidential Scholarship and departmental awards, which are open to all residencies and stack on top of the $5,000 Advantage Award.
Does applying for one competitive award cover the others?
Mostly, yes. The UNI Scholarship Application matches your student to hundreds of awards at once. What it can’t do is write the extra pieces, like the adversity essay for Bright and Noel, or an audition or portfolio. Upload those, or your student won’t be considered.
🧠 Parent Strategy: UNI’s “One Application, Many Doors” Rule
At UNI, almost every hidden gem is matched through one form: the UNI Scholarship Application. Committees can only match your student to what they write in it, so fill it out completely.
Get admitted, then open the application as soon as you can (it opens July 1).
List an intended major. Departmental money is tied to majors, and “undecided” sees less of it.
Fill out the Involvement section fully: activities, honors, jobs, leadership.
If money is tight, upload the adversity essay and file the FAFSA before January 15. That combination is what opens Noel, Bright and Wilson Student Scholars.
Music and art students: book the audition or portfolio review. Without it there’s no award.
Parent translation: skip this application and your student keeps the automatic award but misses most of the rest of UNI’s scholarship money.
💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships
These aren’t automatic, and most families never hear about them. A few are worth the full cost of college for the right Iowa student. Others are $1,000 to $6,000 a year tied to a major or talent.

Transferring In? Watch These Dates
Phi Theta Kappa awards have priority dates of April 1 for fall and November 1 for spring, and none are given after the semester starts. Your student can receive only one PTK award, so the highest one they qualify for is the one to go after.
Roy J. Carver is for rising juniors: $6,000 a year for two years for about 20 UNI students who have worked through real obstacles. The application opens October 1, and the FAFSA has to be in by April 1.
❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
What are the biggest hidden gems at UNI?
Noel Scholars and Wilson Student Scholars. Both are last-dollar awards that can cover essentially the whole bill for a few Iowa students. Noel needs a 3.0 GPA and Pell eligibility, with a preference for business majors and TRIO-eligible students. Wilson Student Scholars is for Tama County high school grads majoring in business, and recipients work or volunteer at least 8 hours a week.
Does my student have to be a music major to get music money?
They have to be admitted to the School of Music, which takes a successful audition and the online music supplement. Awards run up to $6,000 a year. Art (portfolio review, up to $5,000) and theatre (up to $2,500) work the same way.
Are there awards just for certain majors?
Yes. STEM majors can get up to $5,000 a year. Students in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences can get up to $2,000 (CSBS Scholars and Alderman). Future teachers can get up to $1,000 through COE Scholars. All of them run through the same UNI Scholarship Application.
Is Live 2 Succeed really free money?
It is if your student would have lived on campus for two years anyway. Sign up inside the housing contract by the 10th day of classes and get $1,000 in year two, split between fall and spring. UNI’s pages list $500 for some non-Iowa students, so confirm the amount. Becoming an RA in year two forfeits it.
We missed January 15. Is it too late?
Not completely. The UNI Scholarship Application stays open until April 1, and late applications are considered if money is left. The best-funded awards are usually spoken for by then, so next year, aim for January.
UNI doesn’t have a separate honors college. It has the University Honors Program, which gives students small honors sections, an honors thesis and a designation on the transcript. Freshmen don’t fill out a separate application. Students who meet the bar are invited after they’re admitted to UNI, and spots go first-come until the program is full.
Invitation bar: 3.70+ GPA and 27+ ACT (1280+ SAT), or a 3.90+ GPA for test-optional applicants
Missed the bar? Students can send a one-page request for individual review to the Honors Program
Two tracks: University Honors with Distinction (30 honors credits) or University Honors (18 credits)
To stay active: 3.30+ cumulative GPA and at least one honors course per year

Nadyne Harris Scholarships: thesis expenses, plus up to $500 for academic travel, for honors students majoring in humanities, arts, sciences or social and behavioral sciences.
Armbrecht Endowed Honors Scholar Scholarship: a need-based award for an honors student with leadership promise (preference for business majors). UNI doesn’t publish the amount.
Honors FAQs (University of Northern Iowa)
Does my student need to apply to the Honors Program?
Not as a freshman. Students who meet the GPA and test criteria get an invitation shortly after admission. Respond right away, because invitations are accepted until the program fills up.
How does the Presidential Scholarship work?
UNI picks 20 freshmen a year for $4,000 a year ($16,000 over four years), stacked on top of automatic awards. The academic bar is a 3.80 GPA plus a 29 ACT (1340 SAT), or a 3.95 GPA for test-optional students. Beyond that, the Involvement section and the essay for your major decide it. Winners take scholars-only seminars and a sophomore Think Tank project, and junior year includes a leadership series with UNI’s president.
What does it take to keep the Presidential Scholarship?
A 3.50+ cumulative GPA and active standing in the Honors Program, including progress toward an honors designation.
Can out-of-state students win it?
Yes. It stacks on top of the UNI Advantage Awards for out-of-state students, the same way it stacks on Panther Awards for Iowans.
Is there honors money for transfer students?
Yes. Transfers with a 3.30+ GPA and a professor’s recommendation can join Honors and be considered for an Honors Transfer Scholarship of up to $3,000. Submit the UNI Scholarship Application by March 1. It renews for one more year with a 3.30 GPA.
UNI isn’t a big research campus, and it doesn’t try to be. It’s a teaching-focused public university that has been very good at a few specific things for a long time. U.S. News ranks it the top public university in its Regional Universities Midwest category. Two programs stand out.
Nationally Known Program: Accounting in the Wilson College of Business. The business school is AACSB-accredited. In 2025 it also earned AACSB’s separate accounting accreditation, which fewer than 200 schools worldwide hold. Accounting students spend much of their last semester in a faculty-led CPA review built into the program, and UNI cites a #1 national ranking for CPA pass rates from AccountingToday. If your student is thinking CPA, UNI belongs on the list.
Teacher Education: UNI started in 1876 as the Iowa State Normal School, and teaching is still its core. It’s the largest teacher prep program in Iowa, graduating roughly 450 to 500 new teachers a year. Students get 725+ hours of classroom field experience before they graduate, and UNI-trained teachers work in all 99 Iowa counties.
Music and Art Education: UNI says both are the largest programs of their kind in Iowa, with near-perfect job placement in recent years. Both also come with audition- or portfolio-based scholarships.
Business Beyond Accounting: The Wilson College of Business is one of UNI’s biggest colleges, with a Professional Readiness Program that coaches the soft skills employers ask for. Remember that juniors and seniors pay supplemental tuition.
Nursing (New): UNI launched a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2024 and a 12-month accelerated BSN starting August 2026. It’s too young to have a track record, but it gives Iowa families a public-tuition nursing option. Students start as pre-nursing and apply to the program after prerequisites.
🔗 Official University of Northern Iowa Links
Use UNI’s official pages below to double-check costs, scholarship rules and deadlines. When anything on this page and UNI’s site disagree, go with UNI.
UNI is a value school that doesn’t oversell itself. The sticker price is already low, and families in six neighboring states now pay Iowa tuition. For high-need Iowa students, Bright and Noel can take the bill to essentially zero. And if your student wants to teach or become a CPA, few schools in the Midwest have a stronger track record.
The catch is that most of UNI’s money runs through one form. Get admitted early in senior fall, fill out the UNI Scholarship Application completely before January 15 (intended major, activities, essay, FAFSA), and don’t let the automatic award be the only check your family cashes. Families who do that usually find UNI costs less than they expected.

Your kid did everything right. That does not mean the money follows.
Most families build a college list first and think about scholarships second, which is backwards. This free four-part series shows you where the money actually comes from, and how to build a list around it.

I started CollegeReadyParent while working through college costs for my own kid, and quickly figured out that the number a school advertises and the number a family actually pays are two very different things. Since then I’ve gone school by school pulling apart award letters, scholarship pages, and cost sheets to find what families are supposed to just know. This site is the version of that research I wish someone had handed me.
