🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Mercer (Read This First)
December 1 is the real money deadline, not February 1. February 1 is Regular Decision. But Five Star, Macon Impact, Mercer REACH, Middle Georgia Innovation, Tuition Exchange, FIRST Robotics, and Lettie Pate Whitehead all close on December 1. A family that treats February 1 as “the deadline” has already lost access to almost every named award.
November 1 is even earlier for the two biggest ones. Stamps and the Bessie Willingham Tift Scholarship both use a November 1 deadline. Missing it does not just cost you a shot at the money, it costs you the invitation you would have needed to compete for it.
Premier awards replace merit. Weekend awards stack on it. Mercer states plainly that a premier full-tuition scholarship replaces all other merit awards. But scholarships won at Presidential Scholars Weekend or Heritage Scholars Weekend stack on top of the initial merit offer unless noted otherwise. Those are two different rules and they matter to your bottom line.
Common App is accepted, but consider the Mercer Application anyway. Mercer takes either one and says it has no preference. However, Mercer’s own scholarship language repeatedly references submitting materials “as part of the Mercer Application,” including the Stamps portfolio. If your student is competing for Mercer’s top awards, either apply through Mercer’s own portal or confirm with an admissions counselor that the Common App route surfaces the same scholarship steps.
Automatic merit is tuition-only. University Merit Scholarships must be applied to tuition. They do not touch the roughly $15,900 in housing and food.
You cannot apply to Presidential Scholars Weekend. It is invitation-only, and invitations follow from applying early. The only lever you control is submitting the application and the scholarship materials by November 1.

The $65,380 adds roughly $4,184 in indirect costs that Mercer estimates but does not charge you, including about $1,200 for books and course materials, $1,206 for travel, $1,710 in personal expenses, and $68 in average federal loan fees. Is there any in-state discount at Mercer?

How much will tuition go up each year?
Mercer publishes this openly, which is unusual and helpful. The Board of Trustees sets the annual rate and it typically increases 2% to 3% each academic year. Your scholarship amount, however, is generally fixed in dollars for up to eight semesters. So budget for the gap to widen a little each year rather than assuming a flat four-year cost.
What costs are optional and how do I avoid them?
Two auto-enroll programs get added to your bill unless you opt out. The Bear Book Bundle adds $26 per credit hour, though that money comes out of the books allowance rather than adding to your total. Student health insurance adds $1,402 per semester and only applies if you do not file the waiver documenting private coverage. If you have family insurance, file that waiver. What GPA or test score do I need for automatic merit?
Mercer does not publish one. Unlike the big public universities with a printed grid, Mercer runs a holistic academic review looking at GPA, curriculum rigor, and test scores if you submit them. That means there is no number you can point to and say “we qualify,” which is frustrating, but it also means a strong transcript with a modest test score is not automatically capped.
Should we submit test scores if Mercer is test-optional?
Mercer is test-optional for admission and superscores both the ACT and SAT. Since Mercer superscores, a student who tested more than once is presenting their best combined result, so there is usually little downside to submitting if the superscore is at or above Mercer’s middle range of roughly 28 ACT or 1250 SAT. Below that, the transcript is likely doing more work for you than the score would.
Is the merit award guaranteed once we get it?
It is renewable for four years or eight semesters as long as the student stays enrolled full time, which Mercer defines as at least 12 credit hours per term, and keeps a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0. That 2.0 threshold is unusually forgiving for an award of this size. Mercer also has a safety net: if a student falls below 2.0 at the end of a provisional term, they meet with the Office for Student Success to build a plan and become eligible for 50% of the original award while working the plan.

Is Stamps a separate application?
No, and this trips people up. Students must submit a portfolio as part of the Mercer Application, and Mercer states you must be invited to and attend Presidential Scholars Weekend to be considered for Stamps. Eligible accepted students interview at the weekend, a select group advances to interview with additional committees, and Stamps recipients are named from there. We live in Middle Georgia. What should we know?
Two awards are aimed squarely at you and both close December 1. The Five Star Scholarship covers full tuition and fees for seniors in Baldwin, Bibb, Butts, Crawford, Houston, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Peach, Twiggs, Upson, or Wilkinson counties. Macon Impact covers full tuition with housing and food for students with demonstrated need who live in the Bibb County school district and have attended an accredited Bibb County public school since ninth grade. Does Mercer offer a National Merit scholarship?
No. Mercer does not publish a National Merit Finalist award. National Merit Finalists at Mercer compete through the same channels as everyone else, which in practice means Presidential Scholars Weekend.

The one thing to understand about Honors and money at Mercer
Honors admission and scholarship consideration run through the same gate. Mercer states that students who apply for admission before the priority scholarship deadline are considered for both the university honors program and the engineering honors program, that eligible admitted students answer an additional application question indicating interest in Mercer Honors, and that a select number showing exceptional merit are invited to interview for competitive scholarships during Presidential Scholars Weekend. In other words: applying early is simultaneously your honors application and your scholarship application. There is no second chance later.
How you get in: Apply for admission before the priority scholarship deadline, then answer the Honors interest question if it appears in your application.
Practical deadline: November 1 (Early Action I).

We are not going to invent awards to fill a box. Mercer does not publish a separate set of Honors-only scholarships, and that is a deliberate design rather than an oversight. At schools with an honors college, the honors money and the university money are two different pools with two different applications. At Mercer they are the same pool. Honors consideration and competitive scholarship consideration both come out of applying early, and the scholarship dollars are awarded at Presidential Scholars Weekend, which you will find in the Flagship Scholarships section above.
The takeaway for a family budgeting: do not go looking for an “honors scholarship” line item at Mercer. Go win at Presidential Scholars Weekend, and Honors comes with the same early application that gets you there.
Where the Honors track actually pays off
National fellowships: Mercer’s Office of Fellowships and Scholarships advises students on Goldwater, Marshall, Truman, Gates Cambridge, Udall, NSF, Boren, Gilman, and Rhodes, with dozens of Mercer students earning awards each year.
Research funding: The MURS summer program pairs students with faculty mentors and pays a stipend. Honors students are heavy users of it.

What makes it unusual for its size, roughly 4,600 undergraduates, is the sheer breadth of professional schools sitting on top of a small residential campus. A student at a college this size does not normally share a university with a law school, a medical school, a pharmacy school, and a nationally regarded strings conservatory. At Mercer they do, and that changes what is available to an undergraduate.

Mercer Law School runs an Accelerated Special Consideration Program that lets qualified students finish an undergraduate degree and a law degree a full year faster than the usual seven. The School of Engineering offers a 4+1 that starts graduate coursework senior year and finishes a Master of Science in Engineering in a fifth year. The accounting program pairs a BBA and a Master of Accountancy in five years. For a family doing four-year math, these change the total cost of a professional credential, not just the undergraduate bill.
Business: Mercer’s business program feeds the Atlanta and Middle Georgia corridors, with an unusually direct path into a Master of Accountancy or an MBA through combined-degree tracks.
Engineering: A full School of Engineering at a university this small, with its own invitation-only Engineering Honors Program, a 4+1 master’s track, and a Regents’ Engineering Pathway that lets students complete early coursework at Georgia public institutions and transfer in.
Music: The Townsend School of Music houses the McDuffie Center for Strings and the Fabian Distinguished Music Scholars Program, which is the largest audition-based award at the university. If your student plays seriously, Mercer is a genuinely different proposition than a comparable liberal arts college.
Pharmacy and Health Professions: A College of Pharmacy, a College of Nursing, and a College of Health Professions offering physician assistant, physical therapy, athletic training, and public health credentials, all under the same institution an undergraduate is already enrolled in.
Law: Mercer Law School has a long-standing regional reputation and a defined accelerated pathway for Mercer undergraduates.
Education: The Tift College of Education carries the name of the women’s college that merged into Mercer in 1986, and is one of the more established teacher preparation programs in the state.
Undergraduate research: Students work directly with faculty rather than graduate students, and the MURS summer program funds ten-week research placements across liberal arts and sciences, engineering, health professions, pharmacy, and the medical school. Mercer has produced Goldwater Scholars out of this pipeline.
Mercer On Mission: A service and travel program pairing students and faculty on projects abroad, and one of the reasons Mercer’s study abroad numbers punch well above its size.
Something worth knowing about Macon.
Mercer’s community engagement is not decorative. The university’s signature scholarship for local students, Macon Impact, is a full ride restricted to Bibb County public school graduates with need. Whatever else you make of a university, an institution that spends full-ride money on the school district outside its own gates is telling you something about how it sees its place. For families elsewhere in Georgia, it is also a useful signal about the culture your student would be joining.

Here is the honest read on Mercer. The automatic merit is generous and easy: more than 90% of admitted students get something, it runs $18,000 to $27,000 a year, and the renewal bar of a 2.0 GPA is about as forgiving as it gets. That part takes care of itself.
The competitive layer is where Mercer gets genuinely interesting and genuinely unforgiving. Four separate paths lead to a full ride, which is remarkable for a university with 4,600 undergraduates. But two of them are gated behind an invitation you cannot request, one requires a music audition by March 1, and the rest cluster on a December 1 deadline that most families never see because they are focused on the February 1 Regular Decision date. That is the whole story: Mercer’s money is not hard to qualify for, it is hard to still be eligible for by the time most people start looking.
So the plan is short. Apply by November 1, not because you have decided, but because November 1 is the only date that leaves every door open. File the FAFSA by February 1 even if you are certain you will not qualify for need-based aid, because Mercer requires it for scholarships that have nothing to do with need. Check your county against the Five Star and Middle Georgia lists, and check them separately, because they are different lists. If your student plays an instrument or ran robotics, claim it. Then watch your mailbox in December and January, because the invitation, if it comes, arrives on paper.
Mercer is a school where a family that moves early can end up paying very little for a university that has a law school, a pharmacy school, and a strings conservatory attached to it. A family that moves late pays close to sticker for the same education. The gap between those two outcomes is mostly a calendar.
