- The merit grid is for Kentucky residents. EKU’s 2026–2027 automatic awards are for in-state, on-campus, first-time freshmen. Out-of-state families should get any merit offer confirmed in writing before counting on it.
- It’s your unweighted GPA that counts. A 4.1 weighted GPA might be a 3.6 unweighted, and that’s the difference between $7,000 and $5,000 a year.

Starting Fall 2026, EKU’s BookSmart program bills required textbooks and course materials at $26 per credit hour. At 15 hours a semester, that’s about $780 a year. It isn’t in the table above, but it will show up on the bill. The upside is that it’s predictable and usually cheaper than buying books class by class.

Why is out-of-state tuition barely higher than in-state?
EKU prices out-of-state tuition very close to the Kentucky rate. For 2026–2027 it’s a $6,120 flat rate per semester versus $5,325 for residents, and the fees are the same. Over a full year, that’s only about a $1,590 difference in tuition and fees. For families outside Kentucky, that makes EKU one of the more affordable out-of-state options in the region even before any aid.
How many credit hours does the flat rate cover?
The flat rate covers 12 to 15 credit hours a semester. Every hour above 15 costs extra ($355 per hour in-state, $408 out-of-state). Fifteen hours is the sweet spot. It keeps your student on a four-year track without paying more per semester.
Why do EKU’s own pages show two different housing numbers?
EKU’s in-state cost table lists $5,766 per semester for housing and food, while its out-of-state, graduate, and military tables list $6,331. Since it’s the same dorms and the same meal plans, we use the higher $6,331 figure for everyone so you don’t under-budget. Actual room rates run $3,016 to $4,719 per semester depending on the residence hall.
Can out-of-state students pay in-state tuition through the Academic Common Market?
Sometimes. The Academic Common Market (ACM) can cover approved majors your home state doesn’t offer. But EKU’s policy says ACM students are not eligible for merit scholarships. With the out-of-state gap already this small, ask EKU whether your student would get any merit before choosing ACM. You can’t have both.
Is anyone else charged the in-state rate?
Yes. EKU says non-Kentucky military veterans living on campus pay the same undergraduate tuition as in-state students. Online programs and some special programs are billed at their own rates.
Is the average net price of about $10,852 realistic?
It’s the federal average of what families actually paid after grants and scholarships. Kentucky families who stack an EKU merit award with Pell or state aid often land lower. Families who don’t qualify for grants will usually land higher, closer to the direct cost minus their merit award.

🧮 Is the ACT or SAT Worth It at EKU?
Only if your student has a 3.8+ unweighted GPA. At that level, a 28 ACT or 1310 SAT moves them from the $7,000 President’s Award to the $9,000 Regent’s Award. That’s $2,000 a year, or $8,000 over four years. Below 3.8, the score doesn’t change the award at all. EKU uses the composite from a single ACT sitting (no superscore), but it accepts new scores through June 30. A spring retest in senior year can still pay off.

What’s the biggest automatic scholarship at EKU?
The Regent’s Award: $9,000 a year for Kentucky students with a 3.8+ unweighted GPA and a 28+ ACT or 1310+ SAT.
Can my student get merit without test scores?
Yes. The President’s Award ($7,000 for 3.8+), One Eastern Award ($5,000 for 3.4 to 3.79), Excellence Award ($3,000 for 3.0 to 3.39), and Promise Award ($1,000 for 2.0 to 2.99) need no test scores at all.
Does EKU superscore the ACT?
No. EKU uses your student’s composite score, not a superscore built from different test dates.
What does it take to keep the award?
Full-time enrollment, 24 earned EKU hours each year, and a minimum EKU GPA: 3.2 for the Regent’s and President’s Awards, 3.0 for the One Eastern, Excellence, and Promise Awards. Promise Award students also sign a learning contract. Awards last up to 8 continuous semesters.
Is there a deadline for automatic merit?
Your student must be admitted by March 1 and accept the award by June 1. EKU awards merit until funds run out, so earlier is safer.
What can cancel an award?
Switching to a 100% online program, receiving a tuition waiver, joining the Academic Common Market, or transferring in more than 24 college credits after the award is made. Dual credit is fine as long as it stays under that line.
Will this grid still be around for current juniors?
EKU has published the same merit grid for both 2026–2027 and 2027–2028, so today’s juniors can plan around these numbers. It’s still worth rechecking each fall.

Honors Program at Eastern Kentucky University
The EKU Honors Program gives students small, discussion-based classes that can replace some general education requirements, plus an Honors living community, travel grants, and a senior thesis. Students from every major can join. Admission is not automatic. Your student applies separately after being admitted to EKU.

Honors Program Scholarships
The President’s Award renews with a 3.2 EKU GPA, 24 earned EKU hours per year, and full-time enrollment. For a student coming in below a 3.4, that 3.2 is a real bar, so plan the first-semester schedule with it in mind.

⭐ College Specialty
Eastern Kentucky University, in Richmond, is a career-focused regional university that trains a lot of the people who keep communities running: nurses, police officers, firefighters, pilots, therapists, and teachers. Nearly half of its students are the first in their family to go to college. It’s the kind of place where the major your student picks often lines up directly with a job.
College of Justice, Safety and Military Science: One of the largest colleges of its kind in the country, and a state-designated Program of Distinction. It’s home to criminal justice, homeland security, emergency management, fire and safety programs, aviation, and Army ROTC. Students come to Richmond from across the country for these majors specifically.
- Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology: One of only a handful of degrees like it in the country, and ABET-accredited, which matters for engineering licensure down the road.

If you live in Kentucky, EKU is about as easy to plan around as college money gets. Look at your student’s unweighted GPA and you’ll know the scholarship before the acceptance letter shows up, and every admitted on-campus freshman gets something. The bigger wins are small, specific moves. An Honors application by November 10 can turn a $3,000 or $5,000 award into $7,000. A spring retest can move a 3.8 student from $7,000 to $9,000.
