How USD Actually Decides Who Gets In (and Who Gets Money)

USD admitted about 54% of first-year applicants last cycle (9,359 of 17,468), and the average enrolled student had a 4.02 GPA. The big difference from most schools: USD is test-free. SAT and ACT scores are not considered, even if you send them, and that policy runs through Fall 2028. So the transcript, the course rigor, the essays, and the activities carry the whole file, for admission and for merit money.

USD also says applying Early Decision does not raise your odds of admission. Early Action is non-binding and gets you an answer (and a financial aid offer) sooner, which is usually the smarter play for families who need to compare prices.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at the University of San Diego (Read This First)

  • Your FAFSA deadline depends on which admission round you pick. Early Action and Early Decision I applicants need the FAFSA in by Nov 15, just two weeks after the Nov 1 application. Regular Decision gets until Feb 1. The 2027-28 FAFSA opened Oct 1, so start now.
  • Test scores will not help, period. USD is test-free, not test-optional. A great ACT will not raise a merit award here, so don’t pay for a retake with USD in mind.
  • There is no merit chart. USD does not publish GPA cutoffs or award tiers. The only way to see a number before admission is USD’s Net Price Calculator.
  • Need-based aid is the bigger lever. First-years with financial need averaged a $55,710 need-based grant last year, and USD met about 85% of their need. Families who skip the FAFSA because they assume they “won’t qualify” can leave real money behind.
  • Students live on campus for two years. The only common exception is commuting from a parent’s primary home in San Diego County. Budget housing and meals for both years.

💰 Cost of Attendance at University of San Diego: 2026–2027 Rates

Figures verified against official sources in October 2026.

📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest University of San Diego has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.

Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly $1,700 to $4,200 more than the total below.

✔ Same price for every student, no matter which state you live in.

All students: billed cost per year
$84,399
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees $65,199
Housing & meals (typical) $19,200
Total billed cost $84,399

Average federal net price: $37,918 per year. This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.

One Price for Everyone (and One Extra Line to Watch)

USD is private, so there is no in-state discount. A California family and a Texas family see the same sticker price, and about 40% of USD undergrads come from out of state. One thing the table above leaves out: USD’s own billing sheet adds $4,158 for student health insurance, which pushes the bill to $88,397. If your student is already covered on your plan, ask the Torero Hub whether it can be waived.

FAQ: Cost of Attendance at the University of San Diego

How much does USD cost per year in 2026-27?
Tuition is $64,100 and required fees are $1,099. On-campus housing runs $13,450 and the meal plan $5,750. That’s $84,399 in direct costs before health insurance, books, travel, and personal spending.

What do families actually pay after aid?
The federal average net price for first-years was $37,918 in 2023-24. It moves a lot with income. Families under $30,000 paid about $15,586. Families earning $48,001 to $75,000 paid about $19,557, and $75,001 to $110,000 paid about $27,012. Families over $110,000 paid about $46,989. Run USD’s Net Price Calculator for your own number.

Does USD require the CSS Profile?
No. USD uses the FAFSA. Students who can’t file the FAFSA can use the California Dream Act Application or USD’s own Dream Act application.

How much financial need does USD meet?
According to USD’s 2025-26 Common Data Set, first-years with need had about 85% of it met on average. Their average need-based grant was $55,710, with an average total package of $61,010. That’s a big reason the net price is so far below the sticker price.

Can California students use a Cal Grant at USD?
Yes. Cal Grants work at private nonprofits like USD, up to $9,358 a year for new students in 2026-27 under the state budget. The deadline is March 2 (FAFSA or California Dream Act plus a verified GPA from the high school).

Do students have to live on campus?
Yes, for the first two years, if they are unmarried and under 20 when they start. The main exception is students who commute from a parent’s primary home in San Diego County.

Automatic Merit Scholarships: University of San Diego

Every admitted first-year is reviewed for merit automatically. There’s no separate form. USD looks at grades and course rigor plus leadership, service, and what it calls “Changemaker” qualities. Test scores play no role, and financial need does not factor into merit.

Renewable for up to four years (five years for Engineering students) with a 3.0 cumulative USD GPA. USD says merit can be combined with other USD aid and outside aid. If your student wins an outside scholarship, ask the Office of Financial Aid in writing which part of the package it reduces first.

💡
Strategic Detail
USD awards first-year merit automatically during the admission read. There is no public GPA or award grid, and test scores are not considered because USD is test-free. USD does not publish a dollar range; outside scholarship listings show roughly $18,000 to $28,000 per year, and USD's 2025-26 Common Data Set reports an average non-need award of $23,164 for first-years who received one. Treat the range as an estimate and use USD's Net Price Calculator for a personal number.
🕵
Who Actually Wins
Most winners: Admitted first-years with strong grades in a demanding college-prep schedule plus real leadership, service, or Changemaker qualities. Financial need plays no role in the merit decision, and SAT or ACT scores are not looked at.
Data last verified Oct 5, 2026.* GPA/test bands are estimates based on official selectivity and prior cohort profiles. "Who Actually Wins" insights are pulled from external peer-sourced data where students and parents have reported real-world award results. Because colleges can change funding thresholds and deadlines at any time, always verify these details with the institution before finalizing your application strategy.

Note: USD does not publish its merit amounts. The range shown comes from outside scholarship listings, and USD’s own data shows the average no-need merit award for first-years was $23,164 in 2025-26. Your award letter is the only number that counts.

Automatic Merit: FAQs (University of San Diego)

Is there a separate scholarship application?
No. The Common App you send USD is the merit application. Admitted first-years are reviewed automatically.

Will a high SAT or ACT score earn more merit at USD?
No. USD is test-free through Fall 2028, so scores are not considered for admission or merit, even if you send them.

How much merit money does USD give?
USD doesn’t publish amounts or tiers. Outside listings show roughly $18,000 to $28,000 a year. USD’s Common Data Set shows 312 first-years without financial need received merit last year, averaging $23,164. The Net Price Calculator is the best preview.

Does applying early mean more money?
USD doesn’t say early rounds get bigger awards. They get answers sooner: ED I awards arrive in late December and Early Action awards in early February, compared with early April for Regular Decision.

Is USD merit renewable?
Yes, for up to four years with a 3.0 cumulative USD GPA. Engineering students get a fifth year, since many engineering degrees at USD take longer. One older USD page says four and a half years, so confirm on your award letter.

Can merit be combined with need-based aid and outside scholarships?
USD says merit can be combined with other USD aid and outside aid. If your student wins an outside scholarship, ask the financial aid office in writing which part of the package it reduces first.

🏆 Flagship Scholarships (Competitive Scholarships)

USD doesn’t run a big full-ride competition with finalist weekends and interviews. The large money here comes from two places: automatic merit and need-based aid. The competitive scholarships that do exist are talent-based, mostly music auditions. If your student sings or plays seriously, this is where extra dollars live.

✅ Can You Stack Scholarships at USD?

Aid Type Stacks with Merit? USD Parent Translation
Automatic Merit N/A One merit award, set at admission and renewed with a 3.0 USD GPA.
Music and Choral Scholars Generally yes Audition money that sits on top of merit. Confirm the final mix on the award letter.
USD Need-Based Grants Yes This is USD’s biggest aid pool. Merit and need grants work together to cover need.
Cal Grant (CA residents) Yes State money that counts toward the package. Miss March 2 and it’s gone for the year.
Outside Scholarships Ask first USD says they can be combined, but ask which part of the package an outside award reduces before you count on it.

Bottom line: if your student is hunting for a “win it in an interview” full ride, USD isn’t that school. If they bring solid grades, real involvement, and an honest FAFSA, the combination of merit and need aid is where USD gets affordable.

🧠 Parent Strategy: USD Money Comes in Layers

Most USD aid isn’t something you “apply for” in one place. It shows up in layers over four years, and each layer has its own trigger.

  1. Before admission: File the FAFSA by your round’s date. This unlocks need-based aid, Cal Grant, and the University Ministry invitation.
  2. Senior spring: Audition for music scholarships if your student performs.
  3. After depositing: Log into MySanDiego and use ScholarshipUniverse, USD’s matching tool for internal and outside scholarships.
  4. Junior and senior year: Watch for research money (Beckman, McNair), leadership awards (Bob Hope), and study abroad funding.

Parent translation: the first year sets the base package, but the extras come later. Keep the FAFSA current every year.

💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships

These awards are easy to miss because they live outside the admissions office: in University Ministry, the Music Department, the research office, and Student Affairs. Some are for incoming students and many are for students already at USD.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

What is the University Ministry Scholarship?
It’s a $5,000-a-year, four-year scholarship for Catholic students with a track record of parish, school, and community service who also have financial need. About 20 incoming students are eligible each year. It’s invitation-only after admission, so get the FAFSA in early and watch your email.

Are these scholarships for incoming first-years?
Some are: University Ministry, music awards, and ROTC. Others, like Beckman, McNair, Bob Hope, and study abroad money, are for students already at USD. They’re still worth knowing about, since they lower the cost of later years.

What is ScholarshipUniverse?
It’s USD’s scholarship-matching tool for deposited and current students. It’s at the bottom of the My Financial Aid page in MySanDiego and pulls together internal and outside scholarships in one place.

Is there help for military families?
Yes. USD lists unlimited Yellow Ribbon funding for undergraduates in 2026-27 for students at the 100% Post-9/11 GI Bill level. Naval ROTC is headquartered on USD’s campus. Army ROTC is available, and Air Force ROTC runs through San Diego State.

Can USD students get help paying for study abroad?
Yes. Need-based awards for faculty-led programs typically cover about 40% of the program’s tuition and fees, with no separate application. There are also $400 to $800 merit awards and $1,000 to $3,000 Chapman awards for Arts and Sciences students with need.

Honors Program at the University of San Diego

USD has an Honors Program (not a separate Honors College). The big thing to know: you apply after you’re admitted to USD, not with the Common App. Accepted high school seniors email honors@sandiego.edu to request the application, and reviews happen on a rolling basis, so sooner is better.

  • Priority deadline: March 20 last cycle (2026). The 2027 date hasn’t been posted yet.
  • Decisions: Typically by early April.
  • Missed it? Students can apply again in the fall of their first year.
  • What you get: Team-taught classes, priority registration, a mentored Honors thesis, the Illuminate living-learning community, and an Honors lounge.

Honors at USD is about the experience, not a scholarship. There’s no separate Honors merit award; the money here is research funding for juniors and seniors.

Timing Note: Admission decisions for Early Action arrive in mid-December, so EA students have weeks of runway before the spring Honors priority date. Regular Decision students hear in mid-March, which leaves very little time. Request the Honors application the day the acceptance arrives.

Honors Program: FAQs (University of San Diego)

Is Honors admission automatic?
No. Students apply separately after being accepted to USD. USD says it encourages everyone to apply and looks for curiosity, creativity, engagement, and a love of learning rather than a test-score cutoff.

Does the Honors Program come with a scholarship?
No dedicated Honors scholarship. Honors students keep whatever merit and need aid they earned at admission. Upperclassmen can apply for the Lawrence Hinman Honors Research Grant, up to $1,000 for thesis research or conference travel.

What if my student isn’t accepted, or misses the deadline?
They can apply again in the fall of their first year at USD.

What does the application look like?
It’s built to show who the student is, with a one-word prompt, a short response, and a video prompt. USD advises not repeating what’s already in the admission essay.

Is there an Honors dorm?
Yes. Illuminate is the Honors living-learning community for first-years.

⭐ College Specialty

The University of San Diego is a Catholic university of about 6,000 undergrads on a hilltop overlooking Mission Bay. It’s the kind of place where the average class has about 23 students and professors know your name. The Princeton Review has ranked it #1 for most beautiful campus, and 92% of first-years come back for sophomore year. Academically, though, USD’s reputation is built mostly on one thing: business.

Nationally Known Program:
Knauss School of Business: About 4 in 10 USD bachelor’s degrees go to business students, and finance is the single most popular major on campus. Knauss is especially known for real estate. It’s one of the few schools with a real estate undergraduate major, backed by the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate, and USD cites a Top 20 national ranking for it. Big accounting and real estate firms recruit here regularly.
  • Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering: A smaller engineering school that mixes engineering with liberal arts, including an unusual Integrated Engineering major. USD’s newsroom cites a No. 20 national ranking for undergraduate engineering. Engineering merit renews for five years because these degrees often take longer.
  • Biology and Neuroscience: Neuroscience has quietly become one of USD’s larger science majors, and research programs like Beckman Scholars give pre-med and pre-PhD students paid lab time.
  • Psychology and Communication: Two of the most popular majors outside business, with steady paths into health, media, and marketing careers.
  • Changemaker Campus and Study Abroad: USD is one of 23 Ashoka Changemaker Campuses worldwide, and study abroad is a big part of student life, with the USD Madrid Center and faculty-led trips.

✅ Wrapping It Up

Here’s the honest picture of USD. The $84,399 sticker price scares a lot of families off, but almost nobody pays it. The money comes from two places that work together: a merit award decided quietly with the application (no test scores, no chart), and a need-based aid program that met about 85% of need for last year’s first-years. That’s why the average family paid closer to $38,000, and families earning under $75,000 often paid less than $20,000.

So the strategy is simple. Apply Early Action if you want to compare offers. Put the FAFSA in by Nov 15, which comes up fast. Run the Net Price Calculator before you fall in love with the view. If your student is Catholic and active in their parish, watch for the University Ministry invitation. If they sing or play, book the audition. And if your student is drawn to business, especially finance or real estate, USD is one of the strongest small-school options on the West Coast.
