Realistically, no. UNC Asheville allows for “very limited exceptions” but does not define them. Plan on these being sophomore-year opportunities and treat anything earlier as a bonus.

What if my student has not declared a major yet?
Complete the General Application anyway. It connects students to opportunities based on major code, so declaring earlier widens the pool. For the Woodward Scholarship specifically, the major must be declared before the end of March.
Are there awards that are not tied to a major?
Yes. The Michael Armstrong Memorial Scholarship supports first-generation students. The TRIO Student Support Services scholarship is open to TRIO participants. Undergraduate Research grants and Study Abroad scholarships are open across majors and fund projects and programs rather than tuition.
What if we miss the late-March deadline?
You wait a year. These are firm cycle deadlines, not priority dates. Contact the specific department if there is a genuine extenuating circumstance, but do not plan on it.
Note the name. UNC Asheville runs a University Honors Program, not an Honors College. Founded in 1985, it is a program layered on top of a university that is already small and already liberal arts, which changes what it is for. At a 30,000-student flagship, an honors college exists to manufacture small classes. At a school with a 13 to 1 ratio, the honors program is about depth, research, and faculty mentorship rather than class size.
Straight answer for families comparing schools: there is currently no Honors scholarship an incoming freshman can apply for at UNC Asheville. We would rather say that plainly than pad this section.
The McRae Scholarship, historically $50,000 over four years, is closed. The final cohort came from the class of 2026.
The Robin Woodward ’69 Distinguished Scholars award is active and substantial, but it is for rising sophomores who are declared STEM majors already in the Honors Program.
If your student is chasing a named full-ride honors package as a high school senior, this is not the school for that. If they are looking for a place to do real research early and get into competitive national fellowships later, keep reading.

The Woodward timeline, step by step

The part that is genuinely competitive: national fellowships
This is where UNC Asheville punches above its size. The Honors Program director serves as the campus representative for the Goldwater and Marshall Scholarships, and the university has produced five Goldwater Scholars in the last five years. For a school of roughly 3,000 students, that is a real track record, and Goldwater winners have come from chemistry, biology, atmospheric sciences, and computer science.
Goldwater: for sophomores and juniors in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Covers eligible expenses up to $7,500 per year. UNC Asheville typically nominates only one or two students a year, so internal competition is real. Applications are due the last day of January.
Marshall: funds graduate study in the United Kingdom. UNC Asheville submits a nominee every few years rather than annually. Typically due mid-September.
How nomination works: students talk to their department chair, who contacts the Honors Program director. This is not a form you fill out. It is a relationship you build with faculty starting sophomore year.

Does joining Honors come with money?
Not automatically, and not for first-year students right now. Honors membership makes a student eligible for the Woodward Scholarship from sophomore year and gives them access to national fellowship advising. Those are the financial benefits.
Can out-of-state students participate?
Yes. Nothing about the Honors Program is residency-restricted.
Is the McRae Scholarship really gone?
Yes. The Honors Program states that the final cohort was selected from the class of 2026 and that the scholarship is not currently accepting applications. We have left it on this page because it still appears in older college guides and news coverage, and families deserve to know why they cannot find an application.
Does the Honors Program add time to graduation?
No. Honors coursework is designed to fit inside standard degree requirements.
Are there other Honors awards worth knowing about?
There are several graduation awards, including the Phyllis Betts Founders Award, the Arnold Wengrow Founders Award, the Merritt Moseley Community Award, and the Joseph Walston ’23 Undergraduate Research Award. These are recognitions given at the end of a student’s time, not aid you can plan around. The Manly E. Wright Award goes to the graduate ranking first in scholarship, who receives their degree on a silver platter.
UNC Asheville is North Carolina’s designated public liberal arts university and the national headquarters of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. That designation is not a marketing line. It shapes what the school is good at. There is no business school arms race here and no engineering campus. What there is instead is a small set of programs that are unusually strong for a school this size, mostly clustered around the environment, the sciences, and writing.
Signature Program: Atmospheric Sciences — This is the program that genuinely could not exist anywhere else. NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, one of the largest weather and climate data archives in the country, sits in Asheville. UNC Asheville’s own National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center sits on campus and has spent twenty years turning climate data into tools communities actually use. The major offers three concentrations: weather forecasting, climatology, and broadcast meteorology. The forecasting and climatology tracks meet federal civil service requirements for employment as a meteorologist, and students intern at National Weather Service forecast offices. Broadcast meteorology is a rare undergraduate offering anywhere.
Environmental Studies: one of the largest majors on campus and one of the most distinctive nationally. Faculty work on real regional problems, including urban heat mapping with the City of Asheville and landslide hazard work with the North Carolina Geological Survey. Students end up on those projects rather than reading about them.
Psychology: the single largest major by degrees awarded, with undergraduate research woven in early. Students routinely start working with faculty in their first year and present at the campus research symposium.
Biology and Chemistry: small departments with an outsized record. Most of UNC Asheville’s recent Goldwater Scholars have come out of chemistry and biology, and student work gets published in peer-reviewed journals with the student as co-author.
Mechatronics Engineering: a joint Bachelor of Science with NC State, accredited by ABET. Students get an engineering degree with NC State’s curriculum behind it while attending a school of 3,000. There is also a 2+2 pathway. Note that engineering carries its own enhancement fee, and its scholarships run through NC State.
Creative Writing and the literary scene: UNC Asheville runs the Great Smokies Writing Program and a Writer-in-Residence program, in a city with a deep literary culture. For a student who writes, the community extends well past campus.
One honest caveat for families building a college list. If your student wants a large, nationally ranked undergraduate business program, a law school pipeline, or Division I football Saturdays, this is not that school. UNC Asheville competes in Division I in the Big South, but the identity here is small classes, faculty who know your student’s name, and research access that students at much bigger schools usually wait until graduate school to get.

Here is the honest read on UNC Asheville. This is not a merit school. If you came looking for a published scholarship grid where a 3.9 and a 32 buys a specific dollar amount, you will not find one, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What UNC Asheville has done instead is bet everything on one number: $90,000 of household income. Get under it, live in one of five states, and your tuition and fees problem is largely solved before you ever fill out a scholarship application.
So the decision splits cleanly. If your family is under that threshold, this may be the least expensive good education on your list, and the move is simple: apply by February 1, file the FAFSA by March 1, get North Carolina residency determination done early and carefully, and then go win every outside scholarship you can find, because those stack on top of Access Asheville rather than reducing it. If your family is above the threshold, be realistic. Merit here is a modest discount of an amount nobody will quote you in advance, and you should compare the real number against schools that publish their grids.
Either way, do not skip the year-two step. Nearly all of the department money at this school lives behind a student login your incoming freshman does not have yet. The families who get the most out of UNC Asheville are the ones who set a reminder for October of freshman year, get the General Application done in the Scholarship Portal, and keep reapplying every March. That is where a small school with close to 400 scholarship funds turns into real money, and it is the part almost everyone misses.
And for the right student, the academics justify the whole exercise. Atmospheric sciences next door to NOAA’s climate archive, an ABET-accredited engineering degree through NC State at a school of 3,000, five Goldwater Scholars in five years. Small does not mean small opportunity here.
