🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Vanderbilt (Read This First)
- Early Decision means committing before you know about merit. This is the big one. Merit scholarship recipients are not notified until late March. If your student is admitted Early Decision in December or February, they must commit to Vanderbilt without knowing whether a scholarship is coming. Applying early is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage for merit, so ED buys you nothing on the scholarship side while costing you the ability to compare offers.
- Merit here does not care about test scores. Every applicant who meets the December 1 merit deadline is considered whether or not they submitted an ACT or SAT. That is the opposite of how big public universities handle merit, and families coming from that world often assume wrongly.
- Which undergraduate school you apply to matters. No merit award is tied to a specific major, but most are attached to a particular undergraduate school, and each of the four schools awards a number of scholarships proportionate to its enrollment. Blair, the smallest by far, is a much narrower pool.
- Transfer students get nothing. All of Vanderbilt’s merit scholarships are designated for entering first-year students. International applicants, on the other hand, are fully eligible for every one of them.
- Testing becomes required for fall 2029 applicants. Vanderbilt announced in July 2026 that it will return to requiring ACT or SAT scores beginning with students entering in fall 2029. Test-optional holds for fall 2027 and fall 2028. If you have a younger student, plan accordingly.

The one people get wrong: Ingram is not equivalent to the other two. Cornelius Vanderbilt and Chancellor’s cover full tuition. Ingram covers full tuition plus required fees plus the value of on-campus housing, which is roughly $18,500 more per year in real money. Vanderbilt does not have an honors college. There is no separate application, no honors dorm, and no honors admission track running alongside regular admission.
