The Most Overlooked Money on This Page
McNeese offers audition and portfolio awards in ten areas, and two of them are the student newspaper and the yearbook. There is no GPA requirement published and no requirement to major in the activity. A nursing student can march in the band. A business student can compete on the rodeo team. The university does not publish dollar amounts for any of it, which is precisely why so few applicants ask. Contact the department directly, because the aid office does not administer these.

What if my student’s GPA is under 3.25 and they missed the grid entirely?
Then this section is your section. The Distinguished Achievement Award and the McNeese Foundation Freshman Honor Award both start at a 2.50 GPA and weigh leadership rather than test scores. The Louisiana Lagniappe Scholarship starts at 3.0.
We live in Southwest Louisiana. Anything specific for us?
The H.C. Drew Scholarship. It requires local residency, a 2.50 GPA, and enrollment in one of about a dozen approved majors including nursing, engineering, business, education, computer science, and criminal justice. If that describes your family, apply. Local awards routinely go under-subscribed.
What is the deadline?

The area is one of the densest industrial corridors in the country, and McNeese graduates tend to walk into it.
Where McNeese Punches Above Its Weight: College of Nursing and Health Professions — Nursing is the program McNeese leads with, and the NCLEX-RN pass rate is the number the university puts on its own homepage. For a family looking at a direct path from a 22 ACT to a licensed profession with a regional job market waiting, this is the strongest case on campus.
College of Engineering and Sciences: Chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering feeding a Gulf Coast industrial corridor that hires locally. Also home to the agriculture department and the rodeo team.
College of Business: The practical business degrees, accounting, finance, management, with regional employer relationships rather than national recruiting.
Burton College of Education: Teacher preparation with placement across Southwest Louisiana school districts. Louisiana teacher shortages make this a reliable pipeline.
Creative writing: Worth knowing even though it is a graduate program. The McNeese MFA in Creative Writing is the one thing on this campus with a genuinely national reputation, which tells you something about the strength of the English faculty an undergraduate would learn from.
Class size: A 20-to-1 student to instructor ratio. At a school this size, a student who shows up to office hours will be known by name, which is not nothing for a first-generation student figuring it out as they go.
One piece of context worth having: McNeese spent well over a decade losing enrollment before reversing the trend in 2024. The Louisiana Legislature formally commended the turnaround. That matters to a family in a practical way, because a school that is growing again is a school investing in programs rather than cutting them.

Here is the honest version. McNeese is not going to hand your student a full ride, and there is no headline scholarship to chase. What it offers instead is something a lot of families need more: a published price, a published grid, and a thousand dollar gap between what a Louisiana kid pays and what everybody else pays. You can sit down in October of senior year, look at a six-semester GPA and an ACT score, and know the number.
The students who do best here are the ones who understand that the grid award is the floor and not the ceiling. Get the scores in even though McNeese is test-optional, because the money is not test-optional. Apply in October when the funding is full rather than in December when it is thinning out. File the separate scholarship application for the Foundation awards. Call the department. If your student plays an instrument, argues on a debate team, rides, cheers, or writes for the school paper, call that department too, because McNeese pays for all of it and publishes an amount for none of it.
And if you are in Louisiana, the whole calculation changes again once TOPS is layered on. That is the combination that turns a modest school in Lake Charles into one of the least expensive four-year degrees in the region.
