What is the deadline for the Cherry Presidential Scholarship?
Your student must be admitted to WKU by December 1 of senior year, with the official transcript and ACT or SAT scores received by that date. Winners are notified by January 30.
Is there an essay or interview?
Every qualifier is invited to a Cherry Presidential Interview Day on campus, which includes interviews and information sessions. Our Brag Sheet Builder is a good way to get your student’s story organized before that day.
What happens if my student is invited but does not win?
Nothing is lost. Students who are not selected keep their original Academic Scholarship offer, so interviewing is all upside.
Can a superscored 30 get my student in?
No. WKU requires a 30 composite ACT or 1360 SAT from a single test date. A student who is close may want one more sitting before fall of senior year.
How does Cherry renew?
It renews automatically for up to eight semesters with a 3.0 cumulative GPA and full-time enrollment. Gatton and Craft Academy graduates who win are limited to four semesters, since they arrive with two years of college credit.
Does WKU have a National Merit Finalist package?
Not a full-ride one. National Merit Semifinalists receive a $1,500 Supplemental Scholarship, and high scorers usually also qualify to compete for Cherry.

Is Honors admission automatic?
No. Your student must be admitted to WKU first, then complete the separate Honors application in the same portal. Reviewers look at writing quality, activities, and course rigor rather than test scores.
Does my student need an ACT or SAT to apply?
No. Honors dropped the test requirement in 2021. Test scores still matter for the top Academic Scholarship tier and Cherry, just not for Honors admission.
What if my student is not admitted to Honors?
Freshmen with a 3.5 high school GPA can still take Honors courses in their first semester and reapply as an internal transfer for the following year.
Who can apply for Honors grants?
Current Mahurin Honors scholars in good standing. The study abroad grant has fixed deadlines of October 1, October 15, February 15, and March 15 depending on the term. Lifetime Experience Grants are open to all WKU students and are reviewed monthly.
Is there Honors money for students with financial need?
Some. The Gower Endowed Scholarship supports Honors students with financial need, especially in chemistry, and it is applied for through TOPDollar by January 1.
WKU sits on a hill in Bowling Green and started life in 1906 as a school for training teachers. Today it is a mid-size public university with about 16,000 students, and it punches well above its size in a handful of areas. If your student already knows they love writing, weather, or arguing a point, WKU deserves a closer look.
Nationally Known Program: Journalism and Student Media: WKU’s student newspaper and magazine, the College Heights Herald and Talisman, have won more than 50 national Pacemaker awards, the top honor in college media. Thirty-eight former staffers have shared in a Pulitzer Prize. Photojournalism and broadcasting are the programs families from other states most often travel for, and both are on WKU’s Academic Common Market list.
Meteorology: WKU’s program was the first in Kentucky or Tennessee built to meet National Weather Service hiring requirements. Students work alongside the Kentucky Mesonet, the statewide weather network run out of WKU.
Business: The Gordon Ford College of Business awards more bachelor’s degrees than any other area at WKU, with marketing, accounting, finance, and management leading the way.

A Kentucky student with Pell and CAP can walk in with tuition fully covered, and a strong tester can turn one good test date into $16,000 over four years.
What WKU asks in return is timing. Get admitted by December 1 if Cherry is in play and by December 31 no matter what, file TOPDollar by January 1, and send the FAFSA early. Do those four things and WKU, with nationally known journalism, meteorology, and a debate team that just keeps winning, can be one of the best values in the South.
