💰 Cost of Attendance at Western Kentucky University 2026-2027
📅 2026–2027 Planning Note: The costs below reflect the most recently published figures (2025–2026). Universities typically finalize the next year’s rates in the spring, and we’ll update this page once the university releases official 2026–2027 numbers.
Planning tip: At large public universities, tuition, fees, and housing usually increase modestly each year (often in the 2–5% range). For early budgeting, families may want to plan for roughly $1,000–$1,500 more in-state or $2,000–$3,000 more out-of-state in total direct costs once new rates are published.
| Expense | In-State | Out-of-State |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition & Mandatory Fees (12–18 credits) | $12,072/year | $27,000/year |
| Housing & Meals (median on-campus) | $13,300/year | $13,300/year |
| Estimated Total Before Aid | ≈ $25,372/year | ≈ $40,300/year |
Figures reflect the 2025–2026 academic year and assume full-time enrollment (12–18 credits per semester). The totals above include only direct costs billed by WKU. Other estimated expenses—such as books, supplies, transportation, and personal costs—are not billed by the university and vary by student.
Regional Tuition Breaks:
- Border State Scholarship: Residents of any state bordering Kentucky (IN, IL, OH, WV, VA, TN, MO) qualify for in-state tuition.
- Tuition Incentive Program (TIP): Nonresidents with a 3.0 GPA or any WKU scholarship pay a capped tuition rate of $14,136/year.
- WKU Family Scholarship: Children or grandchildren of WKU alumni receive in-state tuition (not stackable with Border State or TIP).
- Academic Common Market (ACM): Students from SREB states can access in-state rates for approved majors if certified by their home state. See our guide to understanding ACM.
Who qualifies? Border State covers seven nearby states, TIP applies to nonresidents with a 3.0 GPA or any WKU scholarship, and ACM depends on your state and major.
How much can families save? Savings range from about $12,800 (TIP) to nearly $15,000 (Border State) per year compared to full out-of-state tuition.
Do you need to apply? Border State, TIP, and Family awards are automatic with admission by the December 31 deadline. ACM requires a separate application and state certification.

🏆 Competitive Scholarships
Some of WKU’s most generous scholarships aren’t automatic — they’re competitive. That means students need strong grades, test scores, leadership, and sometimes an interview to win. The flagship award here is the Cherry Presidential Scholarship, which covers a large portion of tuition for a small group of top applicants.
| Scholarship | Award Amount | Eligibility | Separate App? | Renewable? | Who Actually Wins? | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cherry Presidential Scholarship | Up to $16,000/yr (≈$64,000 over 4 years) | 3.8+ unweighted GPA & ACT ≥30 or SAT ≥1360; full application/admission by Dec 1 (no superscoring) | Yes — invitation to Cherry Interview Day | Yes — 3.0 GPA, up to 8 semesters | High achievers with rigorous coursework, top scores, leadership/service, and outstanding interview performance | Dec 1 (admission & complete file); award notifications by Jan 30 |
What makes these scholarships competitive? They’re limited in number and require an extra step — like essays or an interview. For the Cherry Presidential, only a small pool of top applicants are invited to interview.
Are there deadlines? Yes — to be considered for Cherry Presidential, you must be admitted by December 1 with transcripts and test scores submitted. Interview invitations go out soon after, and awards are announced by January 30.
Can they stack with other aid? Yes — recipients may also receive merit or supplemental awards, but the total package is capped at the cost of attendance.
Who should apply? Students with near-perfect GPAs, top test scores, leadership roles, and community service who are comfortable in an interview setting.
