Wayne State is not built like the other Michigan publics your student is probably comparing it to. It sits in the middle of Detroit, it is the only public urban research university in the state, and about 6 in 10 incoming undergraduates pay no tuition or standard fees at all. That number is real, and it comes from Wayne State itself. But it does not come from one giant scholarship. It comes from four separate tuition pledge programs layered on top of a merit award, and most families only ever hear about one of them.
The other thing to know up front: Wayne State does not publish a merit grid. There is no chart that says “3.7 GPA and a 28 ACT gets you $6,500.” The awards are handed out at admission based on your GPA and your test scores if you send them, and the university simply does not say where the lines are. That is different from most schools we cover, and it changes how you should plan.

🚨 Easy-to-Miss “Gotchas” at Wayne State (Read This First)
“Automatic” here means automatically considered, not automatically qualified. Wayne State publishes no GPA or test cutoffs for any first-year merit award. You cannot look at a chart and know what your student will get. Run the Net Price Calculator instead and treat the result as an estimate.
The Anthony Wayne deadline is four months earlier than everything else. Every other first-year merit award has an August 1 final deadline. The Anthony Wayne Out-of-State Scholarship closes April 1. If your student is out of state, that is the date that matters.
Wayne State publishes two different priority dates. Its admissions and financial aid pages say December 1. The individual award pages say February 1. Go with December 1 and you cannot be wrong.
Test scores only help, they never hurt. If you send no score, Wayne State awards based on GPA alone. If you send a score later, before the deadline, they will review you for a higher award and they explicitly will not reduce an award you already have. There is no downside to sending a good score late.
Only one merit award per student, ever. Anthony Wayne, Detroit Leadership, Gold, Green, WSU Scholar, Math Corps, President’s, Wade McCree, Warrior, Wayne Med-Direct, and Athletic Excellence are mutually exclusive. Your student gets the biggest one they qualify for, not a pile.
The tuition pledges cover tuition. They do not cover housing. At Wayne State that is about $12,268 a year that is still yours to pay if your student lives on campus.
If you live in a Great Lakes state, do not price this school off the out-of-state number. Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ontario families pay the Michigan resident rate plus 10 percent. More on that in the cost section.

💰 Cost of Attendance at Wayne State University: 2026–2027 Rates
Figures verified against official sources in September 2026.
📅 Planning for 2027–2028? These are the 2026–2027 rates, the newest Wayne State University has published. Colleges usually release next year's costs in the spring, and we update this page when they do.
Budgeting tip: costs typically rise 2% to 5% a year. For 2027–2028, plan on roughly
$600 to $1,400 more than the in-state total below.$900 to $2,300 more than the out-of-state total below.
In-State: billed cost per year
$28,505
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$16,237
Housing & meals (typical)
$12,268
Total billed cost
$28,505
Out-of-State: billed cost per year
$46,814
Tuition, fees, housing, and meals for two semesters
Tuition & mandatory fees
$34,546
Housing & meals (typical)
$12,268
Total billed cost
$46,814
That is $18,309 more per year than Michigan residents pay, before any waivers or scholarships.
Average federal net price: $14,773 per year.
This is what first-time, full-time students who received grant aid paid after grants and scholarships, for in-state students only, based on the most recent federal data. It counts books and living costs, so it can run higher than the billed total above. Families who got no grants are not in this average, so many middle-income families pay more. New to Net Price & SAI? Read our guide.
Out-of-state families: this average does not include you. Run the college's own net price calculator for a number based on your situation.
📌 Regional Tuition & Waiver Options
Great Lakes Tuition Policy: undergraduates who are residents of Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, or the province of Ontario pay the Michigan resident tuition rate plus 10 percent in eligible undergraduate programs. Wayne State calls this the Great Lakes Award and there is no separate application for it. Students who do not qualify for in-state tuition or the Great Lakes Award are the target group for the Anthony Wayne Out-of-State Scholarship, worth $9,000 per year. Non-resident first-year students who file the FAFSA are also considered automatically for the WSU Out-of-State Grant, worth up to $4,000 per year. A separate Good Neighbor waiver gives in-state rates to graduate and professional students from Fulton, Lucas, Ottawa, and Williams counties in Ohio and from Ontario, but it does not apply to undergraduates.
🌊 The Great Lakes Award: the biggest cost lever at Wayne State
This is the single most valuable thing on this page for a lot of families, and almost nobody outside Michigan knows about it.
Undergraduates who live in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, or Ontario
pay the Michigan resident tuition rate plus 10 percent. There is no application. There is no essay. You qualify by having an address.
In round numbers for 2026-27, that turns roughly $34,500 in out-of-state tuition and fees into roughly $17,700.
Add housing and meals and your total direct cost lands near $30,000 instead of $46,800.
That is somewhere around $17,000 a year, or close to $68,000 across four years, for doing nothing but living where you already live.
Parent translation: if you are in one of those eight places, Wayne State is priced like an in-state school with a small surcharge. Compare it that way.
One wrinkle on the tuition number above
Wayne State charges different tuition by college, and it uses flat-rate pricing for 12 to 18 credits. Nursing and Engineering upper-division rates run higher than Liberal Arts and Sciences. The figures in the table are based on lower-division rates in the largest tuition band, which is what a first-year student in most majors will actually be billed. If your student is headed into Nursing or Engineering, budget a bit more starting junior year.
The flat rate is genuinely useful, though. A student taking 18 credits pays the same tuition as a student taking 12. If your student can carry a heavier load, they can shave a semester or two off the total bill.
FAQ — Cost of Attendance at Wayne State University
Why is Wayne State’s net price so much lower than its sticker price?
Because of the tuition pledge programs. Wayne State reports that roughly 6 in 10 incoming undergraduates pay nothing for tuition and standard fees. Those students pull the average way down. If your family does not qualify for a pledge, your cost will look more like the sticker price minus whatever merit award your student receives.
Do the tuition pledges cover housing and meals?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding about Wayne State. The Guarantee, Heart of Detroit, Wayne Access, and Born to Be a Warrior all cover tuition and standard fees only. Housing and meals run about $12,268 a year. A student with a full tuition pledge who lives on campus still has a real bill.
Can out-of-state students get in-state tuition at Wayne State?
There are three legitimate paths. You can establish Michigan residency. You can graduate from a Michigan high school after attending at least three years and enroll within 28 months, which works even if you are not a Michigan resident or a U.S. citizen. Or you can have military service status. Beyond that, the Great Lakes Award gets eight nearby states and Ontario to the resident rate plus 10 percent, which is the next best thing.
Does the Great Lakes Award stack with a merit scholarship?
Yes, but read the fine print on Anthony Wayne. The Anthony Wayne Out-of-State Scholarship is specifically for non-residents who do not qualify for in-state tuition or the Great Lakes Award. If your student qualifies for Great Lakes, they are routed there instead, which is almost always worth more than the $9,000 Anthony Wayne award anyway.
What is the Good Neighbor waiver, and does my student qualify?
Probably not. The Good Neighbor policy gives in-state rates to graduate and professional students from Fulton, Lucas, Ottawa, and Williams counties in Ohio and from Ontario. It does not apply to undergraduates. Undergraduates from those areas use the Great Lakes Award instead.
Is Wayne State a commuter school?
Increasingly less so. Nearly 2,800 undergraduates live on campus and about a third of first-year students do. But a large share of students still commute, which is part of why the average net price looks the way it does. If you are budgeting for on-campus living, build the housing number in separately rather than assuming the published net price includes it.
Will tuition go up each year?
Almost certainly, in the usual 2 to 5 percent range. Merit scholarship amounts, however, are fixed for the four years. That means the gap between your award and your bill widens a little every year. Budget for that rather than assuming year four looks like year one.
📅 Wayne State Scholarship Timeline (Simple Version)
December 1: Merit scholarship priority deadline. Application in, transcripts in, optional test scores in.
April 1: Final deadline for the Anthony Wayne Out-of-State Scholarship. This one closes early and it closes alone.
August 1: Final deadline for every other first-year merit award, and the deadline for the FAFSA plus admission application if you want the Wayne State Guarantee or Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge.
December 1 to March 1: The ScholarshipUniverse window for departmental, donor, and Honors College awards. Separate system, separate calendar.
Parent rule of thumb: treat December 1 as your real deadline for everything. The later dates are safety nets, not plans.
Automatic Merit Scholarships — Wayne State University
Read this before you read the cards below.
Wayne State does not publish GPA or test score cutoffs for any of these awards. The official language is that they go to “the strongest admissions applicants based on GPA and ACT/SAT scores.” That is all the university says. The dollar amounts on these cards are exact and confirmed for fall 2026. The thresholds to reach them are not published anywhere, by anyone, including us.
What this means practically: you cannot walk in knowing what your student will get. Use the Net Price Calculator for an estimate, apply by December 1, and treat the award letter as the first real information you will have.
✅ The one genuinely good rule at Wayne State: test scores can only help.
If your student submits no test score, Wayne State evaluates them on high school GPA alone. If they submit a score after admission but before the scholarship deadline, the university will re-review them for a higher award. And in Wayne State’s own words, they will not reduce an award because a score came in late.
So the play is simple. Apply test-optional if the score is not ready. Take the test again in the fall or winter. If the new score is strong, send it before the deadline. Worst case, nothing changes. Best case, your student moves up a tier. There is no scenario where sending a good score hurts.
Find your student's tier

One award, not a pile. Colleges apply your student's single best automatic award. Automatic scholarships almost never stack with each other, though some stack with housing, departmental, or outside money. The stacking notes on each card tell you which.

Automatic Merit — FAQs (Wayne State University)
When should we apply to qualify for merit scholarships?
By December 1. Wayne State’s admissions and financial aid deadline pages both list December 1 as the first-year merit priority date. The individual award pages say February 1. When a university contradicts itself, use the earlier date.
Which award closes first?
The Anthony Wayne Out-of-State Scholarship, on April 1. Warrior, Gold, Green, Scholar, the President’s Award, and the Detroit Leadership Award all run to August 1. Anthony Wayne does not. Out-of-state families miss this one constantly.
Does Wayne State superscore?
Yes, Wayne State superscores both the ACT and the SAT, and combined with the test-optional ratchet described above, that means retaking the test is close to pure upside.
What GPA does my student need for the Warrior Award?
Wayne State does not say, and we are not going to invent a number. The Warrior Award is $6,500 per year and it goes to the strongest applicants in the pool. The pool changes every year. Run the Net Price Calculator for an estimate.
Can my student get both the Warrior Award and the Gold Award?
No. Wayne State awards exactly one merit scholarship per student from a published list: Anthony Wayne, Athletic Excellence, Detroit Leadership, Gold, Green, WSU Scholar, Math Corps, President’s, Wade McCree, Warrior, and Wayne Med-Direct. Your student gets the largest one they qualify for.
Are these renewable?
Yes, for four consecutive years. Renewal requires a 3.0 GPA, full-time enrollment of 12 or more credits in fall and winter, and passing at least 30 credits per academic year. That last one catches people. A student who drops a class in December can fall short of 30 credits by May.
What if my student is transferring from a community college?
This is the one place Wayne State publishes actual numbers. Transfer merit awards require 24 transferable credit hours and a cumulative 3.0 GPA across every college attended. Warrior Transfer is $6,000 per year, Gold Transfer $4,000, Green Transfer $2,000, and the Pathway Award $1,000, each for up to four semesters within two consecutive years. Those are real, plannable thresholds.
My student’s award says it may be “replaced or supplemented with an endowed scholarship.” What does that mean?
It means a donor-funded scholarship may end up paying for part or all of the award instead of general university funds. The dollar amount to your family does not change. It is an accounting detail, not a reduction.
Wayne State’s competitive list is short, and that is the honest framing. There are three awards here, and one of them is in a category of its own.
Wayne Med-Direct is the only true full ride at Wayne State and one of the more unusual programs in the country. The other two are a National Merit package and a regional leadership award. If your student is chasing a wide slate of essay-and-interview scholarships, Wayne State is not that kind of school. What it has instead is a very deep bench of need-based and residency-based money, which lives in the Hidden Gems section below.
🩺 A word about Wayne Med-Direct, because it is genuinely rare
Four years of undergraduate tuition and fees. Four years of on-campus room and board. Then four years of School of Medicine tuition. Students are admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Irvin D. Reid Honors College at the same time, and they get interview consideration at the WSU School of Medicine once they meet program criteria.
Two things families should be clear-eyed about. First, medical school admission is not automatic. Students must hold a 3.5 cumulative undergraduate GPA and a 3.65 AMCAS science GPA, complete the MCAT, and finish the bachelor’s degree, and the Admissions Committee is still the final authority. Second, the program is built around a health disparities learning community and urban health care. Reviewers read for whether a student actually wants that work. The strongest applications come from students who would choose this mission without the money attached.

No
One merit award per student, from a fixed published list. Highest value wins.
Tuition pledges (Guarantee, Heart of Detroit, Wayne Access, Born to Be a Warrior)
Yes, but last-dollar
The pledge fills whatever gap is left after merit. So a bigger merit award often does not increase your total, it just changes who pays. Your out-of-pocket for tuition is zero either way.
BUILD Tuition Pledge
Takes priority
If your student qualifies for BUILD and another pledge, BUILD is the one that applies.
Departmental and donor awards (ScholarshipUniverse)
Yes
These are the real gap-fillers, and since the pledges stop at tuition, this is where housing money comes from.
Need-based grants
Yes
Pell, the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, and WSU grants all feed the pledge math. FAFSA timing is everything.
ROTC
Usually
Check the award letter for replacement language, and remember total aid cannot exceed cost of attendance.
The one counterintuitive thing on this page: if your family qualifies for a full tuition pledge, a larger merit scholarship may not put another dollar in your pocket. The pledge was already covering tuition to zero. What actually moves the needle for pledge families is money that can be applied to housing, which means departmental awards, the Corvias endowed scholarship, and outside scholarships. Chase those.

❓ Flagship / Competitive Scholarship FAQs
What does Wayne State give National Merit Finalists?
The President’s Award, worth $12,000 per year for four years for students starting in fall 2026. There is no separate WSU application, but your student has to complete the National Merit process and designate Wayne State. Renewal requires a 3.5 GPA.
Is the Detroit Leadership Award worth applying for?
If your student is eligible, yes, and here is why. It is up to $5,000 per year for four years, and it is the only first-year award at Wayne State that asks your student to write anything. A 500-word essay on service or leadership and one letter of recommendation, due August 1. Because it requires effort, the applicant pool is smaller than the eligible pool.
Who is eligible for the Detroit Leadership Award?
Graduates of a high school in Macomb, Oakland, or Wayne County, or in Flint, Saginaw, Ypsilanti, or Grand Rapids. That is a much wider net than the name suggests. A lot of suburban Detroit families assume this is a city-of-Detroit award and skip it.
Does Wayne Med-Direct guarantee admission to medical school?
No. It guarantees interview consideration once your student meets the program’s academic criteria. The School of Medicine Admissions Committee makes the final call. Treat it as a funded, structured, heavily supported pathway rather than a ticket.
Is Wayne State a Stamps or QuestBridge partner?
No to both.
My student wants a big essay-driven scholarship. Is Wayne State a fit?
Not really, and it is better to know that now. Outside of Wayne Med-Direct and the Detroit Leadership Award, Wayne State’s money is allocated by formula, residency, and financial need rather than by competition. If competitive scholarships are the goal, Wayne State should be a strong financial safety rather than the target.
🧠 Parent Strategy: Wayne State Has Four Tuition Pledges, Not One
Most families hear about the Wayne State Guarantee and stop there. If your income is above $80,000, they assume they are out and never look again. That is the single most expensive mistake you can make on this page, because Wayne State runs four separate pledges and they cover different people.
Wayne State Guarantee. Michigan residents with household income of $80,000 or less and assets of $50,000 or less, or any Pell-eligible Michigan resident regardless of income. Now covers transfer students too, starting fall 2026.
Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge. Detroit residents and graduates of any Detroit high school, public, private, charter, parochial, or homeschool. FAFSA required, but demonstrated need is not.
Wayne Access Tuition Pledge. The catch-all. Any student with FAFSA-demonstrated need, covering up to full tuition and standard fees at the in-state rate. This is the one nobody has heard of.
Born to Be a Warrior. Children and stepchildren of full-time Wayne State employees with a 3.5 high school GPA. This one needs an actual form.
Parent translation: file the FAFSA, even if you are certain you make too much. Three of these four require it, one of them does not care about need at all, and Wayne State decides your eligibility without you applying for anything. Not filing is how families leave a full tuition award on the table.
💎 Hidden Gem Scholarships
This is where the real money lives at Wayne State. The tuition pledges cover tuition. The awards below are what cover the rest, and several of them have almost no competition because nobody knows to look.
📌 After you are admitted, do this: ScholarshipUniverse
Getting admitted to Wayne State does not mean your student applied for all available money. Admitted and current students log into WSU ScholarshipUniverse, complete a general profile, and then apply to every award the system matches them to. The window runs December 1 to March 1.
This is where departmental awards, donor endowments, Honors College funds, and the Corvias housing scholarship all live. It is also the only place that money can reach a student who already has a full tuition pledge, since these awards can be applied toward housing and other costs.

Two more awards worth asking about by name
Wayne State’s official scholarship policy lists two merit awards we could not find current published terms for: the Wade McCree Incentive Scholarship and the Math Corps scholarship. Both appear on the university’s one-merit-award-per-student list, which means they are real and they are worth money. We are not going to publish amounts or criteria we could not verify.
If your student attends a Detroit-area high school or has been through the Math Corps summer program, call the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 313-577-3577 and ask about them directly. Ten minutes on the phone is worth it.
❓ Hidden Gems FAQ
We make more than $80,000. Are we shut out of the tuition pledges?
Not necessarily. The Wayne State Guarantee has the income test, but the Wayne Access Tuition Pledge does not publish one. It goes to students who demonstrate financial need on the FAFSA, and need is calculated off far more than income. Two kids in college, a business loss, high medical costs, or modest assets can all change the answer. File and let Wayne State tell you no.
What is the difference between Heart of Detroit and Detroit Promise?
They are two different programs that families constantly merge together. Heart of Detroit is a Wayne State award for Detroit residents and Detroit high school graduates. Detroit Promise is a city program that Wayne State honors, and it requires separate certification that happens while your student is still in high school, on its own calendar. If your student is Detroit-eligible, look at both.
Our student has a full tuition pledge. Should they still apply through ScholarshipUniverse?
Yes, absolutely, and this is the highest-leverage thing on the page for pledge families. The pledges stop at tuition and standard fees. Housing and meals are roughly $12,268 a year and nobody is covering that. Departmental and donor awards can be applied to it.
Is there anything specifically for out-of-state students beyond Anthony Wayne?
Yes, the WSU Out-of-State Grant, worth up to $4,000 a year for four years. It is automatic for incoming first-years who file the FAFSA and are charged non-resident rates. Students with a Student Aid Index below 17,500 get up to $2,000 and Pell recipients get up to $4,000. No application, no essay, and it stacks with Anthony Wayne.
What about transfer students?
Wayne State is unusually good here. Transfer merit awards run $1,000 to $6,000 with published thresholds. The Wayne State Guarantee now covers transfers as of fall 2026, renewable two years. And the Community College Transfer Housing Scholarship is new for fall 2026: $5,000 a year for two years, $10,000 total, for Michigan community college transfers who live on campus. That last one is brand new, which means the applicant pool has not caught up to it.
Is there money tied to research?
Two programs. BUILD Scholars is a first-year entry point, part of the NIH-funded ReBUILDetroit partnership, and its tuition pledge takes priority over the other pledges. The MARC Program is for juniors and seniors headed toward a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D., and it pays full tuition plus a research stipend. Your first-year student cannot apply to MARC yet, but sophomore year is when they should be building the faculty relationship that gets them there.
How will we know if we won something?
Merit awards arrive with the admission decision. Pledge eligibility shows up in the financial aid package after the FAFSA is processed. ScholarshipUniverse awards are notified through the system and by Wayne State email. Check the student email account, not yours.
This is the opposite of how most honors colleges work, so it is worth saying plainly. Wayne State admits first-year students to the Irvin D. Reid Honors College by direct admission, using the GPA and test scores already on the Wayne State application. There is no separate form, no separate essay, and no separate deadline. Students who qualify get a letter from the dean.
Published threshold: a minimum 3.75 high school GPA and a minimum 27 ACT or 1280 SAT if test scores are submitted
How to apply: you do not. Applying to Wayne State is applying to Honors.
Size: roughly 2,000 students across University Honors and Departmental Honors tracks
Other entry points: transfer students and currently enrolled Wayne State students can also join through separate pathways
The catch, and it is a real one: Honors admission is automatic, but Honors money is not. Every scholarship below requires a separate application through WSU ScholarshipUniverse during the December 1 to March 1 window. Your student can be an admitted Honors student and receive nothing from the Honors College simply by never logging in. The Honors College says directly that qualified applicants far outnumber available funding.

No. First-year admission is direct, based on the high school GPA and test scores submitted with the Wayne State application. If they qualify, the Honors College notifies them.
What are the actual Honors admission numbers?
A minimum 3.75 high school GPA and a minimum 27 ACT or 1280 SAT if scores are submitted. Unlike the merit scholarships, these thresholds are published.
If Honors admission is automatic, does that mean Honors scholarships are too?
No, and this is the thing families get wrong. Every Honors scholarship requires a ScholarshipUniverse application between December 1 and March 1. Admission gets your student into the college. It does not get them into the funding.
Is there an extra cost to Honors?
Yes, a small one. Wayne State charges an Honors Support Fee of $50 per semester for full-time students. Budget for it, but it is not a barrier.
Can out-of-state students join Honors?
Yes, and Honors students come from across Michigan and beyond. Honors admission is independent of residency, so it layers on top of the Great Lakes Award or the Anthony Wayne Scholarship without conflict.
Are Honors courses harder?
They are smaller and more discussion-driven rather than simply heavier. University Honors is a 28-credit interdisciplinary co-major that leads to Honors distinction at graduation, and much of it satisfies general education requirements your student would be taking anyway.
Wayne State is Michigan’s only public urban research university, and it is an R1 research institution sitting in the middle of Detroit’s Midtown, within walking distance of the Detroit Medical Center, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the hospital system that anchors the city. That location is not a footnote. It is the reason a Wayne State student can be in a working lab or a clinical setting as a sophomore rather than as a senior, and it shapes almost every strong program on campus.
Nationally Known Strength: Health sciences and the medical pipeline. The School of Medicine is one of the largest single-campus medical schools in the country, and it sits next door to the undergraduate campus. That produces things other universities cannot easily copy, like Wayne Med-Direct, which funds a student’s undergraduate degree and medical school tuition together. Add the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the College of Nursing, and a student who thinks they might want a career in health care has an unusual number of ways in.
Mike Ilitch School of Business: Housed in a purpose-built facility in the District Detroit, with direct proximity to the businesses and sports organizations that funded it. Strong pipelines in finance, accounting, and supply chain.
James and Patricia Anderson College of Engineering: Deep ties to Michigan’s automotive and mobility sector, with particular strength in mechanical, electrical, and biomedical engineering. Co-op and internship placement in the region is a real advantage here.
College of Nursing: Clinical placement inside one of the largest urban hospital systems in the Midwest, a short walk from class.
Law School: Long-established, well regarded among public law schools, with strong placement across metro Detroit.
College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts: Theatre, music, and dance programs with a long performance tradition and audition-based scholarship money attached.
Urban studies and public health: Programs that treat Detroit as the subject and the laboratory rather than as scenery. If your student is drawn to policy, community development, or health equity work, this is a genuinely distinctive place to do it.
The honest assessment for parents: Wayne State is not chasing prestige rankings, and if that is what your family is optimizing for, this is not the school. What it is extremely good at is turning a moderate cost into a credential with a working professional network attached, in a city where the employers are a bus ride away. It is consistently recognized in national social mobility rankings for exactly that reason.

Here is the honest shape of Wayne State. It is not a merit-scholarship school in the way Alabama or Arkansas are. There is no chart to aim at, no guaranteed award for a given GPA, and no big essay competition to win. What Wayne State has instead is a stack of programs that quietly zero out tuition for about six out of every ten incoming students, and a location that puts a research lab, a hospital, and a downtown employer within walking distance of a freshman dorm.
If you live in Michigan and your household income is under $80,000, or you are Pell-eligible, or you are anywhere near Detroit, the tuition line on your bill may simply go to zero. If you live in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, or Ontario, the Great Lakes Award prices this school like an in-state option with a ten percent surcharge, and that is worth roughly $17,000 a year compared to the sticker. If your student wants medicine, Wayne Med-Direct is one of the few programs in the country that funds the undergraduate degree and medical school together.
The work for you is smaller than it looks. File the FAFSA even if you are sure you earn too much, because three of the four tuition pledges run off it and one of them does not check income at all. Get the application in by December 1. Watch the April 1 Anthony Wayne deadline if you are out of state. And after your student is admitted, make them spend an hour in ScholarshipUniverse between December 1 and March 1, because the pledges stop at tuition and housing is the bill nobody is covering for you.
Your kid did everything right. That does not mean the money follows.
Most families build a college list first and think about scholarships second, which is backwards. This free four-part series shows you where the money actually comes from, and how to build a list around it.
