Our standard planning note tells families to budget 2% to 5% tuition growth each year, because that is what happens at nearly every public university in the country. SIUE is an exception. The university guarantees your base tuition rate for four continuous academic years, so the tuition figure your student is admitted under is the figure they graduate under.

Parent translation: for tuition, use the number in the table above and multiply by four. Housing, meals, and fees are not covered by the lock and can still move, so leave a little room there. But the biggest line item is fixed, and that is unusual enough to be worth real money over four years.

1. The engineering and business surcharge. Undergraduates in the School of Engineering and the School of Business are charged a 15% differential on top of base tuition. Instead of $13,299 in tuition and fees, those majors pay $7,389 per semester, or $14,778 a year. That is about $1,479 more annually, or roughly $5,900 across a four-year degree. If your student declares a business minor rather than a major, there is a separate one-time $525 fee.

2. Student health insurance at $2,583. SIUE requires health insurance for full-time domestic students taking at least one in-person class, and it bills you for the university plan by default. You can opt out by submitting proof that your student is covered under your family policy, but you have to actually do it, every year. This is one of the most common ways families accidentally overpay at SIUE.

SIUE folds basic textbook rental into the general student fees you are already paying. Most families budget $800 to $1,200 a year for books. At SIUE, that line is largely already handled through Textbook Services. Specialized course materials, studio fees, and lab fees are still charged separately, so it is not zero, but it is a genuine and unusual saving that most comparison tools miss entirely.

Cougar Pride is structured as a last-dollar tuition waiver. State aid is applied first, then private scholarships, and Cougar Pride fills whatever tuition gap is left. It cannot produce a refund check.

Parents often read that and panic, thinking an outside scholarship will cancel out their merit award. Here is the honest version: if your student wins a big outside scholarship that already covers tuition, Cougar Pride shrinks. That is real. But the same structure is what lets the SIUE Commitment and AIM HIGH stack cleanly underneath, and those two are worth far more than the $2,000 to $4,000 Cougar Pride provides. The system is built to get low and middle income families to zero tuition, not to reward stacking for high earners.

Practical takeaway: if your household is under about $113,000 and you live in Illinois or the St. Louis metro, aim your energy at the FAFSA, not at outside scholarship applications. If your household is well above that, outside scholarships that target housing and meals rather than tuition will stack better than tuition-targeted ones.

CODES stands for Community-Oriented Digital Engagement Scholars, and it is easy to misread as a technology program. It is not. It is an alternative path through SIUE’s general education requirements. Instead of taking the standard gen ed course list, CODES scholars work in small teams with a faculty mentor and an outside community partner on a real regional problem, then publish that work in digital form. Past cohorts have partnered with the Missouri Botanical Garden, the City of Alton, Heartlands Conservancy, and the YWCA of Southwest Illinois.

The scholarship covers full undergraduate tuition for up to 18 credit hours a semester across eight semesters, and one semester can go toward approved study abroad worth up to $5,000. It is funded in part by the Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Eligibility runs to students who are Pell-eligible, first in their family to attend college, or underrepresented in their intended major, and a GPA of 2.50 is enough to qualify.

What is the deadline for CODES?
March 31. It requires a supplemental application separate from the SIUE admission application, and it includes written responses. Note that the program explicitly rejects AI-generated application content.

Is a 2.50 GPA really enough for a full-tuition award?
Yes, and this is one of the most underappreciated facts about SIUE. CODES is selected on fit and commitment rather than on academic ranking. Most scholars begin as first-semester freshmen, and the program is looking for students who will actually show up for the community work, not for the highest GPA in the pile.

What is the catch with CODES?
Two things worth knowing up front. First, it replaces other SIUE scholarships of equal or lesser value rather than adding to them. Second, it is a real commitment of about three and a half years, with required courses, team projects, and a dedicated CODES advisor for the first year. Students who treat it as a scholarship rather than a program tend to struggle.

Does SIUE offer a National Merit package?
No. SIUE is not a National Merit sponsor and does not run a Finalist package. If your student is a National Merit Semifinalist, that recognition helps in the honors and Meridian review but does not trigger a separate award.

Most schools reward students who hunt down and apply to a dozen separate awards. SIUE rewards students whose parents file the FAFSA in October. Three of the biggest programs on this page, AIM HIGH, the SIUE Commitment, and SIUE GO, require no scholarship application at all. They are triggered automatically once your FAFSA is processed and your student is admitted.

1. File the FAFSA the week it opens. SIUE school code is 001759.
2. Check your income against the $113,575 threshold for the Commitment or GO.
3. Once enrolled, log into SIUE’s AcademicWorks scholarship portal and complete the general application, then search departmental awards tied to the major.
4. Talk to the department directly. Nursing, engineering, music, and business all administer money that never appears in a central search.

Parent translation: at most schools, October is early. At SIUE, October is the deadline that actually costs you money.

The two programs that can take tuition to zero

The SIUE Commitment covers tuition, mandatory fees, and course-specific fees for Illinois residents whose family income is $113,575 or less with assets under $50,000, who attended an Illinois high school and enroll full time in a bachelor’s program. It was expanded from a $63,575 ceiling, which is why a lot of families who checked a few years ago and were told no would now qualify.

SIUE Gateway Opportunity does the same thing for dependent Missouri residents from Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, St. Louis, St. Louis City, or Warren counties who attended a Missouri high school. Same income and asset thresholds.

Both are last-dollar and both run for eight semesters. Income is rechecked each year with your new FAFSA, and the award continues as long as family income does not jump by more than 3% year over year. That last detail catches people: a large one-time bonus or a home sale in your student’s sophomore year can end the award.

❓ Hidden Gems FAQ

Which of these is worth the most for the least effort?
AIM HIGH, by a wide margin. It is $2,500 a year, renewable for four years, requires zero applications beyond the FAFSA, and stacks on top of your merit award. The only way to lose it is to file late, because the money is distributed in FAFSA order until it runs out.

Can these stack with Cougar Pride?
Most can. AIM HIGH, departmental awards, music and fine arts awards, and URCA stipends all layer on top. The two that override rather than stack are Meridian and Provost, and CODES supersedes SIUE awards of equal or lesser value. Always read the award letter for the word “supersedes.”

What is URCA and is it really a scholarship?
It is a paid research and creative work program with two tracks. Assistants work 6 to 9 hours a week on a faculty member’s project and up to 90 of those positions per semester carry a $750 award. Associates design their own year-long project, and only ten are selected annually with up to $2,400 each plus department funding for materials. The GPA floor is 2.3, which is low enough that a lot more students qualify than apply. There is no tuition waiver attached, so treat it as paid experience rather than tuition relief.

Are there awards for music or art students who are not majors?
Yes. SIUE’s music and fine arts awards run from $500 up to $5,000, and there is a Fine Arts Tuition Waiver worth 25% to 50% of tuition. Auditions and applications typically run in early February through the Department of Music or Fine Arts. Non-majors who play in ensembles are often eligible, and this is one of the most commonly missed opportunities on campus.

My student is first-generation. What is available?
Beyond the Commitment and CODES, SIUE runs McNair Scholars and related federally supported programs for first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students planning graduate study. Those come with research stipends, summer experiences, and graduate school preparation rather than straight tuition dollars.

When do these deadlines hit?
Most departmental and endowed awards close around February 1 or March 1. URCA runs on its own calendar tied to the academic year. AIM HIGH and the need-based programs have no deadline in the usual sense, only the FAFSA date, which is why we keep pushing October.

Most parents hear “honors” and picture extra work piled on top of a normal schedule. SIUE inverted that. Every undergraduate takes one of two general education paths: the standard Lincoln Plan at 33 to 36 credit hours, or the Honors Program path at 19 credit hours. Honors students are not taking gen ed plus honors. They are taking honors instead of gen ed.

That frees roughly 15 credit hours across the degree. In practice, that is a minor, a semester abroad, a double major, or the breathing room to do research without adding a fifth year. Honors classes are discussion-based and small, taught by hand-picked faculty. Students do owe 50 service learning hours before graduation, so it is not free of obligation, but the credit math genuinely favors the honors student.

The Meridian Scholarship is SIUE’s highest academic honor and its only true full ride. It covers tuition, mandatory and course-related fees, on-campus housing in a standard shared room, and a traditional meal plan, for eight semesters. Recipients are automatically admitted to the Honors Program. Twenty-one were awarded in the most recent cycle, so this is a small, real competition rather than a formality.

Priority deadline: November 15. Final deadline: December 1. Both the admission application and the separate Meridian application must be complete. Applicants who advance are notified in early January, virtual interviews follow in late January, and finalists come to campus for Honors Scholarship Day, which falls on Friday, February 5, 2027 for the incoming class. Selections are made right after that event.

A 3.5 weighted GPA opens the door. What gets a student through it is the written responses and the interview, where the program is looking for evidence of leadership and civic engagement, not just grades. Renewal requires active Honors participation, full-time enrollment of 12 or more hours, and a 3.25 cumulative GPA.

Sitting directly below Meridian is the Provost Scholarship, and it is not a consolation prize. It runs eight semesters, requires Honors membership throughout, and one of those semesters can be applied toward approved study abroad worth up to $5,000. It can even be applied at the undergraduate rate toward tuition in the SIU School of Dental Medicine, the SIUE School of Pharmacy, or the Graduate School, which is unusual and valuable for students on a pre-professional track.

Two things to watch: a Provost award supersedes the AIM HIGH Grant rather than stacking with it, and recipients must accept their admission offer and register for New Student Orientation by the posted May 1 date or the award can lapse. That second one has cost families real money.
