Both. Incoming freshmen can go after awards like the Eva G. Farris Business Scholarship, the CINSAM STEM Scholarship, the Iler Endowed Scholarship, and the two first-generation awards. What is a Haile Scholar?
About five business students a year win full in-state tuition through the Haile Foundation Undergraduate Full Tuition Scholarship. Students need junior standing, a 3.5 GPA, and a strong service record, and they reapply each year.
Who qualifies for the River City Promise?
Pell-eligible graduates of Bellevue, Dayton, Holmes, Lloyd, Ludlow, or Newport High School who start at Gateway Community & Technical College right after high school, finish an associate degree, and transfer straight to NKU full time. Tuition is covered at both schools for up to 12 semesters or six years.
My student is first-generation. Is there money just for us?
Yes. The Boehne Family First Generation Scholarship and the Mearns/Proud Family Endowed Scholarship both look for first-gen students with a 3.0 GPA and a 23 ACT or 1050 SAT. One central application puts your student in the running for both.
When will we hear back?
Offers roll out as each college’s committee decides. NKU aims to send them before March 1. If your student hears nothing by then, they can still be named later if money goes unclaimed.
Can current NKU students apply?
Yes. Continuing and transfer students use the same mid-January application, and many named funds are only for sophomores and up.
The NKU Honors College is a separate application that comes after your student is admitted to NKU. NKU does not publish a GPA or test cutoff. Instead, the committee leans on the required essay and on whether the student shows a real desire to contribute to the Honors College, NKU, and the local community. That makes it a good fit for curious students whose numbers are strong but not flashy.

Where the Honors Money Really Is: Most of it shows up after freshman year. NKU is a regional public university in Highland Heights, a few minutes from downtown Cincinnati, and that location shapes almost everything about it. The strongest programs are the ones plugged into the Greater Cincinnati job market: business, technology, health, and teaching. Students can intern across the river during the school year and often get hired by the same companies after graduation.
Nationally Recognized Program: Cybersecurity in the College of Informatics: The National Security Agency has designated NKU a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education for more than a decade. The designation was renewed for a third five-year term in 2024, and cybersecurity enrollment passed 500 students in early 2025. Informatics lives in Griffin Hall, and the college hosts the long-running Northern Kentucky Cybersecurity Symposium each October with NKU’s law school.
Haile College of Business: Built on a $15 million gift from the Haile Foundation in 2008, the largest in NKU’s history. Finance students can manage real money in the Haile Student Investment Fund, a live portfolio that has grown past $1 million. The college also funds full-tuition Haile Scholars and gives out about $300,000 in scholarships a year.
Health Sciences & Nursing: The College of Health and Human Services offers nursing, health science, respiratory care, social work, and exercise science, which feed directly into the region’s hospital systems.
Education: NKU is working hard on the teacher shortage. Its Haile Foundation Future Educator Fellows program starts in 2026-27, offering selected students a tuition discount, summer camp jobs, and support once they are certified and teaching.
Chase College of Law: NKU has its own law school on campus. Undergraduates cannot major in law, but pre-law students get a law school right down the path.

The bigger dollars take a little more hustle.
