UT Rio Grande Valley at a Glance
Last verified: October 18, 2025
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley offers one of the state’s most affordable four-year experiences—especially for Texas residents who qualify for UTRGV Tuition Advantage, which covers full tuition and mandatory fees for families earning up to $125,000 (after other grants are applied).
Combined with automatic merit awards and state/federal aid, many UTRGV students graduate with minimal debt. Out-of-state students can also receive the in-state rate through the Competitive Scholarship Waiver.
FAQ
Is this college test-optional? Yes — UTRGV is test-optional and accepts superscores; however, ACT/SAT are required for Tuition Advantage eligibility and considered for some scholarships/programs.
What is the middle 50% ACT/SAT? ACT: 15–21; SAT: 880–1090 (for students who submitted scores).
What’s the average net price? About $6,500/year after aid. See our Net Price & SAI guide.

Reciprocity & Waivers:
- Competitive Scholarship Waiver: Nonresidents who earn a competitive scholarship of $1,000+ pay in-state tuition (saves about $12,150/year). Automatic once you qualify.
- Academic Common Market (ACM): Texas participates only at the graduate level. Undergrads should see our Academic Common Market guide for details.
- No WUE/Flagship Match: Texas does not offer WUE or regional reciprocity programs for undergraduates.
Reciprocity & Waiver FAQs
Who qualifies? Nonresident students who receive at least a $1,000 competitive scholarship automatically qualify for in-state tuition at UTRGV. Graduate students may also qualify through the Academic Common Market (ACM) if their program is approved and not offered in their home state.
How much can you save? The competitive scholarship waiver reduces costs by about $12,150 per year. Graduate ACM savings vary by program and home state approval, but typically equal the full difference between out-of-state and in-state tuition.
Is it automatic? The scholarship waiver is applied automatically once you’re awarded an eligible scholarship. ACM is not automatic — students must apply through their state’s higher education office and be certified before UTRGV will grant the in-state rate.

Automatic Scholarship FAQs
Do I need a separate application? No. If you apply to UTRGV by December 1, you’ll automatically be considered.
Does test-optional affect my chances? You can still qualify test-optional. UTRGV also looks at your GPA, class rank, and course rigor.
Does UTRGV superscore? Yes. UTRGV uses the highest section scores across multiple ACT or SAT attempts when awarding scholarships, so sending all your scores can only help.
Can I stack with waivers? Yes. If you’re a nonresident and your scholarship is $1,000 or more, you may also get the in-state tuition waiver.
Do I need to be in the Honors College? No. Automatic scholarships are open to all freshmen. Honors offers separate competitive programs like Luminary.

🏆 Competitive Scholarships
UTRGV has a small number of selective scholarships that require a separate application and are not guaranteed like the automatic awards. These are competitive because of limited funding, extra requirements, and a focus on leadership or community service.
| Scholarship | Award Amount | Eligibility | Separate App? | Renewable? | Who Actually Wins? | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VAMOS/UTRGV Endowed | Up to $10,000 over 4 years | Incoming freshmen from Hidalgo, Starr, or Cameron County; top 25% of HS class; Pell-eligible; service and leadership preferred | Yes — apply online | Yes | Valley students with strong academics, financial need, and community or leadership background | February 15 |
Competitive Scholarship FAQs
How competitive are these? Very. VAMOS has limited slots and requires strong academics and community involvement.
Is Honors College required? No. VAMOS is independent of Honors—any eligible Valley student can apply.
What extra steps? Requires its own application (and often essays and recommendations).
Can these stack with automatic awards? Yes, but always check your award package letter for final stacking policy.

🎖 Honors College
UTRGV’s Honors College gives high-achieving students a smaller community inside a large public university. For first-gen families, think of it as an “academic home base” with extra mentoring, smaller classes, and research opportunities that set students apart for grad school or medical school applications. Admission is by application, not invitation-only, so motivated students can put themselves forward.
High school GPA ~3.7–4.0; often AP/IB or dual-credit coursework; leadership in service or extracurriculars; strong writing skills. *UTRGV does not publish fixed GPA/test cutoffs. These ranges are based on past profiles and should be treated as estimates.
- Priority registration and smaller, discussion-based classes
- Dedicated Honors housing options and peer community
- Faculty mentoring, research support, and thesis/project opportunities
- Direct pathways to selective programs like Vaqueros MD (early assurance for med school)
